Waking up, she picked herself up off the ground and looked around.
Why does it feel like I got hit by a truck? What was that place and why can't I remember any details about it? Weird. Maybe it was a dream?
She seemed to be in a forest, she shivered, a chilly one at that.
Alright, no idea where I am? Check. Weird dream that may or may not have happened? Check. A really annoying headache and the feeling of being run over? Check. That settles it. I must be turning into Uncle Qrow and gotten very drunk last night.
Suddenly, she heard a loud roar in the distance. After a quick glance around, she decided to climb a tree to get a better view around and she saw what had made the noise.
Is that a wyvern? Huh, less black stuff falling off it and more boney plates. Maybe it's not an evil grimm wyvern of death and despair? She followed its flight path back to where it was leaving and saw a large pillar of smoke rising into the air. Or maybe it is still evil and of death and despair. Alright, step one, hunt down the wyvern or search for survivors? Probably best to go see if anyone needs help, maybe they have more information on it too.
With that, she started running towards the smoke using her aura to go far faster than normal. Occasionally she would stop to get back above the tree line to confirm she was going in the right direction. When she finally got there about an hour later she decided to look for survivors in the burning and collapsing ruins. That wyvern did a number on this place, makes me glad grimm can't breathe fire. She kept walking through the streets checking any bodies she found for signs of life until she heard a groan. Running towards the sound she saw an armored man laying on the ground trapped under a long thick wooden beam.
"Hey! Let's get you out of there." She said running over to the man to start lifting the large beam.
"What? What are you still doing here? Run! Didn't you see the dragon? It could be back any moment!"
"Well someone's gotta save you and I don't see anyone else alive to do it."
"Save me? I'm already dead, there's no way you can move that beam on your own and even if you do I'll bleed to death before we can get anywhere with a healer. So unless you're a lot stronger than you look and know healing magic I'm not getting saved."
While he was talking she started looking around for some cloth to use as a bandage, after a short search she decided to use some of the other dead soldiers' clothing.
"Well I don't know about healing magic but I can tie a pretty decent bandage. and as to moving the beam? It shouldn't be a problem." As she was talking she walked over and using her aura to boost her strength she lifted the beam off him and threw it to the side and quickly got down to look at his injuries. "How far is it to the nearest town with a healer?" She pulled a flask off his side and started cleaning the affected area and started bandaging it up.
He looked at her in astonishment."Whiterun is probably the closest, six hours on foot or three by horse, maybe two if you're quick about it. How did you do that?"
Finishing up her bandaging she thought about it. Yeah, I think he can make that, might not be awake the whole time but he should be alive when we get to the doctor at least. Voicing her thoughts "We should be able to make that, which way is that from here?"
"Through that gate and down the road. There's a smaller village on the way but as far as I know, there isn't anyone there known for their healing. I've seen injuries similar to this and I'm not convinced I'm gonna make it six hours."
"No, you probably wouldn't at this rate, I plan on getting there well before six hours though. Help me take off your armor, I don't need you being heavier than you already are, we can come back for it later when you aren't bleeding everywhere."
He started undoing various straps and buckles to remove his armor. "You have a horse then?"
"Nope, gonna have to carry you."
He looked up at her in confusion as he took off his helmet. "Who are you?"
She got her arms under him in a bridal carry and stood up. "Ruby Rose, Huntress extraordinaire at your service."
"A hunter? I don't think I've ever seen a hunter wear so much red, or really anything other than brown before, from what I understand bright colors make it a lot harder to blend in." He winced in pain as she started running.
"I'm more of a run up and start cutting off body parts kinda huntress than a sneaky stealthy one, it usually doesn't work on grimm anyway, they always sense me coming." As she made it through the gate she started using her aura to pick up speed.
He looked up as the trees started blurring by. "What in the world? How are you so fast?
"I told you, I'm a huntress, how do you think we hunt down grimm? Walk there? It would be so much harder to save people that way." 'I'm gonna have to stagger these runs though, I probably won't be able to make it there in one go and I'd hate to get caught out mid-journey with nothing left.' After about five minutes they came across some dead wolves that looked like they had been stabbed. "These don't look like they've been dead long, there must have been some other survivors that came through here. Weird that wolves would attack people though they usually leave that to their cousins."
"Wolf attacks are actually fairly common in these parts, honestly it's more common to get attacked by wolves on a journey here than not. What cousins were you talking about though?"
She resumed her run but kept the conversation going."Beowolves, y'know, the grimm. Wolf attacks are that common here? Doesn't anyone hunt them down to stop the attacks?" If there were that many attacks then they were at least as much a problem as the grimm.
"No money in it, and most people don't feel like getting themselves killed without a decent reward to look forward to. You've mentioned grimm a few times now, what are they and what's a beowulf?"
She looked up in astonishment. "You don't know what grimm are?"
He raised an eyebrow. "Should I?"
"You guys don't have grimm here? Like at all?"
"Not that I'm aware of?"
"Huh, that's…. really weird. Must be nice, they are quite common where I'm from."
"What are they like then?"
"One of the most common varieties are beowolves, they are kinda like regular wolves but a lot more forward heavy in their build, they're all black except where they're covered in white boney plates and glowing red eyes. They've been hunting humanity where I'm from for at least as long as we've recorded history."
"Well, I'm glad we don't have that particular variety here then. Where were you from anyway? If only so I can avoid it. " He joked, going to laugh and then wincing in pain.
"Vale."
"Never heard of it, that in Tamriel?"
She frowned, looking down. I really am in a different world aren't I? "No, it's a bit further away than that I think, in a land called Remnant."
"Huh, sounds like you're a long way out then. What are you doing out this way anyway? Other than saving my sorry hide that is?"
"Yeah, I suppose I am, and I guess I don't know. Saving people I guess, it's what I did before." With that, they fell silent as Ruby ran along until they made Riverwood about twenty minutes later.
She called out. "Is there a doctor or a healer here? This man is hurt!"
A woman called back. "Not here, your best bet is up the road towards Whiterun."
"Dang, is there anywhere I can get a drink and something quick to eat then for the road? I gotta get this guy to help quick and don't really have any money to pay you with, I'll come back and find a way to pay for it though."
A tall blonde man came out of a building holding a piece of bread and a bottle. "Here, you can repay us by coming back and telling us the story of what happened."
She sat down to eat and drink. "Yeah, I can do that, thank you." She took a bite of bread and went to swallow it down with the drink and ended up coughing in surprise. "That's not water!"
The man looked surprised, "Well no, mead's way better than water. why would you want that?"
Frowning, she took another drink, "It's fine, just not what I was expecting I guess, thank you." She finished up her quick meal and picked the man back up. "Thank you again, I'll be sure to get you that story, although if you want the interesting part I better bring this guy back with me, I only found him after the fact." With that, she started running again occasionally slowing down to let her aura recharge, the rest of the journey was mostly uneventful, about another half-hour in they left the forest and mountains behind and came into some rocky plains, an hour and a half after that she saw the walls of a town in the distance.
"You still awake down there?"
"Yeah? Barely," he whispered out.
"Is that Whiterun over there?" she asked, shifting to give him a better view.
"Yeah I reckon that's it, less I'm going nuts and I've hallucinated all this, probably make more sense that way," he mumbled out, his head falling after he looked up.
Alright nearly there then, good I don't think this guy's got much time left. She resumed her run towards the gate until a guard called out "Halt! Who goes there?"
She called out a response."Ruby Rose, this man needs help! He's been bleeding for at least three hours now."
"Alright, in ya go. You'll wanna head up to the keep, the Court Wizard can probably help ya." He then opened the door for her and she ran by.
"Thank you!" she called out.
Navigating the mess of streets she eventually made her way up to the only building that could qualify as a keep in her opinion. Guards again stopped her. "This man is bleeding out! I heard the Court Wizard could help him? Is he here?"
"Yeah he should be in there, head on in, don't cause any trouble, you know the deal." He said, looking almost bored he opened the door for her.
She hurried in and looked around her eyes adjusting to the lighting. She went and asked the nearest person, "Where is the Court Wizard?" They pointed off to a side room and she hurried over there and saw a man inside. "Are you the Court Wizard?"
"Yes?",
"This man needs help," she said, setting him on the nearest table. "Alright, that's done I'm gonna go take a nap now." She lay down on the floor and promptly fell asleep.
