Chapter Two
Jordan watched as his father anxiously paced the floors of The Department of Defense, in a chair on the opposite side of the room, his mother bit at the pad of her thumb.
Jon was kidnapped.
Jordan looked down at his hands, then to the bracelet around his wrist. He had grabbed it as they left the house. Jon had made it for him years ago when the two of them had been in boy scouts. Jordan had never been able to figure out how to make them, so Jon had made him multiple. Only the aggressively bright orange one had survived their childhood and early teens.
Wearing it made him feel closer to his twin, something he desperately needed right now.
"So you're telling me that you couldn't pinpoint the kidnapper's location?" General Lane asked, and Jordan looked over at him even though he knew the question was aimed at his father.
"That's exactly what I'm telling you," Clark said. "As hard as I tried, I couldn't tell where it was coming from."
Jordan glanced over at his mother, but she didn't look over at him. She was instead invested in the conversation between her father and her husband.
Jordan fidgeted with the bracelet around his wrist as his grandfather spoke. "You're Superman," General Lane said. "Why weren't you able to locate it? That's what you do every day."
Clark sighed. "I don't know…" He said, his voice just barely above a whisper. "I don't know."
General Lane looked over at Jordan, and the two of them locked eyes for a moment. For just a second, he felt like his grandfather was looking directly into his soul. He sat as straight and still as possible.
Finally, General Lane looked back at Clark and Lois, and the piercing gaze was off of Jordan.
"What about him?" General Lane asked.
Lois stood up. "Dad, no. Absolutely not," she told him. Her voice was firm, and Jordan recognized it as the same one she used when she scolded him and Jon. "He doesn't have control over it the way Clark does. He had a seizure because of it!"
"It's been awhile since then," he said. "He has better control over it now. What's the harm?"
"The harm," Clark began as Jordan kept his eyes cast down at the floor. "Is the brain damage that can happen if it can't be fixed at The Fortress. Jordan isn't as invincible as you think he is. He's still human, even with the powers."
They continued to fight, but Jordan tuned them out. Instead, he opened his ears to the rest of the world, to the universe. To Jon.
If he could find him and figure out where he was, then everything would be okay. If he could hear his twin, then he could be of some help.
He had to do something. Anything.
Instantly though, the sound was unbearable. Cars sounded like tornadoes, people who whispered now sounded like they were screaming. The sounds of life sent a rush of pain like a knife into his head.
He tried not to cry out, he tried not to burst into sobs, he tried not to throw up. He had to find Jon. He had to try.
As hard as he tried though, he couldn't hear him. Not his voice, or his breathing. Not even his heartbeat.
"Jord!" He heard Clark call, but his voice was so loud it felt like it was going to burst his eardrums and split his brain. "Jordan, stop."
Jordan opened his eyes as the sounds of the world faded away and all he could hear was the sounds in the room.
Before he could stop them, the tears cascaded from his eyes. Within seconds, he could feel his father's strong arms around him.
"I… I couldn't hear him…" Jordan said as he sobbed. "I couldn't even.. even hear his heart… heartbeat!"
"I know," Clark said, though his voice was just barely above a whisper and filled with the sound of his own tears. "I know."
When the door opened, Jon couldn't help the way his heartbeat spiked.
"Hello, Jonathan," Jex said as he walked in.
Jon pressed himself against the wall. It was cold, hard, and unforgiving against his back. "Please, let me go…" He begged.
"Now, now," Jex said as he sat on the floor next to Jon. "I just want to talk to you."
Jon wanted to cry. He didn't want to talk to Jex. He wanted to go home. He wanted his dad to come save him. Why hadn't he been saved yet?
"Why don't you have any powers, Jonathan Kent?" Jex asked, and Jon felt like a rock had been dropped into his stomach.
"Why do you want to kill Superman?" Jon asked. Maybe he could distract him from the powers conversation.
Jex smiled his twisted smile at Jon. "So now you wanna talk about Superman?" He said, then reached over and pinched Jon's cheek. "I already gave you your chance for that conversation."
Jon flinched at the pain in his cheek. Jex was anything but gentle, and Jon wasn't invincible like his father and brother. He stayed quiet though. He wasn't going to give Jex any sort of information.
"Maybe your powers just haven't come in yet," Jex said. "Maybe you need a little bit of a kickstart to be like your Daddy Dearest. Which by the way, shouldn't he have saved you by now? I'm quite surprised that he hasn't come in here with guns blazing and an entire army behind him."
Jon swallowed. He had wondered that too. Did they no longer care about him? Did they forget about him? He knew it had been awhile since the last time they had hugged him or had a meaningful conversation with him, but surely they were out there looking for him.
Maybe though…
Maybe they weren't.
They had Jordan after all. The better son these days, the Kryptonian son. He was their pride and joy now. Jon was nothing but the spare twin, the child who got in the way. The one who was stupid and reckless.
No.
They would find him. He knew it. They would save him. They wouldn't let some creep with a space name keep him hostage.
Right?
"Superman is going to rescue me," he finally said, though even he had to admit that it took some effort.
"I'll tell you what," he said. "I'll give your Daddy twenty four hours to come in here and save you. After that though… Well, we'll just have to hope that your Kryptonian abilities kick in before that."
Jon swallowed. They would find him in the next twenty four hours, right? His Dad was Superman, his Mom solved this sort of thing all of the time, and his brother had powers. Surely they would find him before Jex could do anything.
"Well, I'll leave you to it," Jex said before ruffling Jon's hair and leaving the room.
Jon pulled his legs to his chest and began to cry. "Please," he begged, though he wasn't sure if his family could hear him. "Save me.
So, there's chapter two! Things are starting to get a bit scary for both groups! Please follow, fave, and review! I would love to know what you thought!
