Anne spoke to Gilbert through the cave until Marshall Elliott told her that she had to let Gilbert conserve his strength. Gilbert was cut off from access to food, water, and anything that he could use to try to stay warm.

Anne sat vigil outside the cave all night. She hoped that the children were all still asleep. However, if when the children woke up, they would have Susan with them for now. Her place was here at the cave where Gilbert was trapped.

The sun rose. Miss Cordelia told Anne that she needed to return to Ingleside. Anne refused.

Anne fell asleep outside the cave. When she woke up, she was in her bed at Ingleside. Anne dressed. She called Miss Cordelia and demanded that Marshall Elliott take her back down to the Four Winds Cave.

How long did Anne sleep while Gilbert was trapped? From the look of the sun, it was late afternoon now.

Anne knew from being Gilbert's wife that a man could go about three days without water, give or take. Gilbert had now been trapped in the cave for roughly a day. Time was running out.

As Anne came down to the cave to speak with Gilbert, it seemed to her that there were many more men in the rescue crew than there were last night. So many more. Where had all of these men come from? Anne had never seen any of these men before. These were not local men.

Marshall Elliott had explained that the cave entrapment was now big news all over North America. Newspapers from Montreal to Toronto to Boston to Chicago to Vancouver carried the story now of the cave explorer and the brave doctor who were trapped together in a sandstone cave on Prince Edward Island. Several experts in mine engineering had travelled out to Prince Edward Island to offer their expertise.

Anne spoke to Gilbert until Marshall Elliott once again told her to let Gilbert conserve his strength.

Just like the night before, Anne fell asleep outside the cave.

Anne woke in the middle of the night to cheering.

Marshall Elliott said, "They're out of the cave, Anne! The doctor and Mr. Collins are out of the cave."

The rescuers wrapped Gilbert in blankets. They have him a generous helping of water to drink. Then, they brought him back to Ingleside.

Dr. Parker checked Gilbert over. He told Anne to get Gilbert warm and get him some food and water and that he, Dr. Parker, would be back in the morning. Dr. Parker hurried off to check on Floyd Collins.

Gilbert said, "Parker should have checked on Collins first. The man's in worst shape than I am. I'm fine."

Anne said, "Gilbert, just relax and let me take care of you."

Anne got Gilbert into a nice hot bath while Susan warmed his dinner for him. Anne tucked him into bed. Susan brought Gilbert's dinner on a tray to his bed.

Anne said, "I have a surprise for you. Dr. Parker told me that several doctors from Boston and Toronto came out to the island when they read about your entrapment to offer their services. After your rescue tonight, they offered to take care of your patients for the next week while you recovered. So, Gilbert, you can finally get some nice rest."

Gilbert said, "It's a shame that I need to almost die in order to catch a break."

Miss Cornelia came over the next morning to check on everyone.

Anne said, "I just keep thanking the Powers that be that all of those mining experts came out to Four Winds to free Gilbert. I keep thanking the Higher Power that this accident made it into the international news."

Miss Cornelia said, "You keep thanking the Higher Power, dearie, for bringing Owen Ford to Four Winds. Owen Ford is the man who got all of the big newspapers to carry news about the Four Winds Cave collapse."
