New York 1812
Young Buzz looks in a store window where a top hat, dress coat and slacks are displayed on a mannequin. He is dreaming yet again of a life filled with song, dance, lights and amazement. In the distance, a train horn blows and someone grabs him by the arm.
"Come on!" Someone snaps. Buzz looks up and sees his father, Taylor Lightyear, dragging him away from the window. "Come along, Barnabas, our train is about to leave." They were traveling uptown to the home of the Peep family. Taylor was their personal tailor. Once there, they walked up the long stretch of road to the bright white house. While his father worked on a new suit for Master Peep, Buzz watched young Boadicea learn proper etiquette. The two have become best friends since his father had started working for Mr. Peep. He watched as her instructor taught her how to lift a cup, making sure to keep her pinky extended and not to slurp. Buzz grabbed a few things and made his own makeshift cup and copied her. Except when he pretended to take a sip, he slurped a piece of fabric between his lips, making Boadicea spit her tea everywhere. She and Buzz laughed out loud.
"Bodicia!" Her father yelled. He waved her over and saw stains on her dress. "Your dress. Is this the way we taught you to behave?"
"It's my fault, sir. Buzz spoke up. I'm the one that made her laugh." Bo smiled at him, but Mr. Peep was unamused. He walked over to the boy.
"Thank you for that noble apology, but you still interrupted her lesson and made her stain her dress." He raised his hand and slapped him. "Insolent boy." Mr. Peep turned back to Taylor who continued to add pins to his suit jacket. Buzz went out the back to the shore and sat on the sand. A few moments later, Bo came and sat beside him.
"How did you get out?" Buzz asked.
"The window. Are you okay?" She asked. He nodded. "Father didn't mean it. He's just hard on me about my lessons. Which is why he's sending me to finishing school."
"When do you leave?" Buzz asked.
"Tomorrow. I don't want to go. I'd rather be here, listening to your stories."
"You mean my silly dreams? Not so much stories, are they?"
"To me they are. They are things you want most, things you want to see and do." She looked out at the water. "I don't know what my future will be."
"I do. I plan to make a wonderful life for you, Bo, filled with all the amazing wonders in the world." She looks at him and he smiles, and begins to sing.
I close my eyes and I can see
A world that's waiting up for me
That I call my own
Through the dark, through the door
Through where no one's before
And it feels like home
They begin to walk down the road to an abandoned house. Climbing over the vine covered fence, they begin to explore it. Buzz walks through an opening in the vines, but Bo hesitates. Buzz holds out his hand for her and she takes it. They walk into a huge room and Buzz sings again.
Cause every night I lie in bed, the brightest colors fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake.
I think of what the world will be, a vision of the one I see.
A million dreams is all it's gonna take.
A million dreams for the world we're gonna make.
They see old toys and furniture and they sit and Buzz tells her more about what he wants and what he would give to her when they're older. When they walk back to the house, Buzz's father is waiting on the steps for him. He hugs Bo tight.
"Write to me as much as you can." She sighed.
"I promise I will." He said. They said their goodbyes and the next morning, Bo was off to school. As the years passed, they wrote to each other constantly. She told him tales from her school days, he told her about his father taking a turn for the worst and eventually his death. Buzz had no other living relatives, so he had to survive on the streets and would take food that he needed. Almost always he got away with it, but one time he got caught by the baker. Frustrated that he lost his meal for the day, he was shocked and amazed when a woman with a deformed face held out an apple for him. From then, he tried to make a living while still writing to Bo. He sold newspapers and took a job building the all-American railroad. Several years later, a full grown nineteen-year-old man, he walked proudly up the road towards Bo's house. She had finished her schooling at the age of twenty-one and he wanted to start the life he dreamed about with her. Her father was already at the door when he came up the steps.
"Sir, I promise I will take care of your daughter and give her the life she deserves." Buzz said, taking his hat off. They heard footsteps on the stairs and saw Bo coming down with a suitcase. Buzz thought she looked radiant. Her father turned back to him, leaned in and spoke softly to him.
"She'll be back. He said. She will get tired of your lifestyle, and she'll come back home." Bo came to the door and kissed her father goodbye and the two love birds were off to the streets of New York. There, they walked along the busy roads, finally free to start creating the world they dreamed of, and Buzz knew exactly where to begin.
"Bo, I love you so much, and when I'm with you, I know I can do anything, that we can do anything. He said, holding her. But for us to begin our life together, I want to start with this." He gets down on one knee and opens a little box with the tiniest little ring inside. "I'm sorry it's not much…"
"It's fine, just ask me." Bo said, quickly and excitedly.
"Bodicia Victoria Peep, will you…"
"Yes, of course!" She jumped into his arms, kissing him. They quickly ran off to a man Buzz knew with a great price on an apartment and they stepped into their new home. Bo looked around and back at him.
However big, however small
Let me be part of it all,
Share your dreams with me.
They ate dinner in their small apartment and then went up to the roof, dancing under the moonlight.
You may be right, you may be wrong,
But say that you'll bring me along
To the world you see,
To the world I close my eyes to see.
They dance together across the buildings, keeping in time together. At the end of the song, Buzz holds her in his arms and whisperers in her ear.
"A million dreams, for the world we're gonna make." He said. He kissed her lightly before leading her into the bedroom.
