Chapter 2
Brennan sits in the couch in her office with Andy in her arms, the baby is looking at her with the cutest blue eyes and she can't help the smile of adoration that grazes her face.
"I hope there's someone out there that can take you in, I wouldn't want you to go to foster care." said Brennan. Why am I talking to an infant? He can't possibly understand what I'm saying, she asked herself with a shake of her head.
Earlier that day the partners solved the case, the man responsible for killing Meg Taylor was behind bars. After they finished with the paperwork regarding the case a problem surfaced: Andy didn't have family. Booth had read the boy's birth certificate but there was only his mother's name there and yes, they talked to the father earlier and probably with a DNA test he could file for custody, but after contacting him he said he didn't want anything to do with the child. Probably for the best, that man wasn't father material.
Booth quietly walks into his partner's office in case Andy is sleeping, and a big smile presents in his face at the sight of Brennan gently rocking the baby to sleep while softly humming a song he doesn't recognize. God, I love her.
"Bones?"
Brennan turns after hearing her nickname, "Oh, hi Booth." she said with an embarrassed smile, having been caught doing something Angela would refer to as un-Brennan like.
"He asleep?" he asked, Brennan nods and gently places the baby in the carrier. The partners sit side by side for a few minutes just watching him sleep. After a few minutes Booth breaks the silence.
"He doesn't have anyone Bones, I've looked into Meg's files and she doesn't have any family. She was an only child and her parents died 3 years ago in a car accident. No cousins, friends… Nothing." Booth said with a sad look directed at the carrier.
"What will happen to him?" she asked, although she already knew the answer.
"Foster care," he said simply, "I called social services and a social worker is on its way."
I can't let him go into foster care. Brennan knows the system has improved since the time she was a ward of the state, but she fears for the child nonetheless. "I'll take him."
Booth looks at Brennan with surprise in his face, "Are you sure Bones? This is a big commitment."
"I'm sure Booth, I've been thinking about it since you talked to his biological father... I'm financially secure, I have space in my apartment and It would be no problem if I take him, I'm a registered foster parent."
But he could see through her rational reasons, "And you like him Bones." He said with a raised eyebrow. Brennan looks at her partner in the eye and knows she can't lie, so with a shy smile she nods but her verbal response is cut off by a knock in the glass door. A woman who they assume is the social worker is there and the two of them stand so they could talk to her and not disturb the infants' sleep.
"Good evening my name is Karen Walters, I'm here for the minor you have in custody. Agent Booth, right?" The social worker extended her hand as a greet.
"Yes. This is my partner, Dr. Temperance Brennan."
After shaking hands, the woman proceeds to inform them of her intensions of taking Andy to a group home, "We couldn't find any emergency foster homes so far so until we find one he will have to stay in a group home."
"Actually, I'm a registered foster parent. I was thinking if Andy didn't have anyone, I could take him." Brennan said.
"Okay then. If you could accompany me to my office, you can sign a few papers and then you can take…" the woman not so discreetly checks in her folder, "Andy home."
Brennan agrees and turns to take the carrier but Booth already has it and it's heading towards the exit. She was contemplating asking him to accompany her, but it seems that he already decided and honestly, she feels better if he's with her. But she isn't admitting that out loud of course.
After going to Karen Walters' office and signing some papers, Brennan heads home for her 1rst night with a baby.
Brennan closes the door of her apartment and gets the now awake baby from his carrier. Walking to the kitchen to get some water, she mixes the formula with it and gives it a little shake for it to blend. At this, Andy sees his meal and gets a little impatient. "It's almost ready, just wait!" Brennan said with a light chuckle. She places the nipple in his mouth and the baby calms immediately.
The clock reads 9:13 pm, and after releasing a yawn she decides to go to bed. I've read babies awake multiple times at night, I better get as much sleep as possible. After locking up she heads to her room where she faces a problem. Since she didn't know Andy would be staying with her, she only bought formula and clothes and know he didn't have a place to sleep. Brennan thought for a minute and finally decided he would sleep with her, "At least for tonight sweetie" she said. Wait, where did that moniker come from?
She pulls down the cover of her bed and places Andy in the left side with a couple of pillows so he doesn't fall. Then, she puts on a tank top and flannel pants and goes to the bathroom to remove her makeup and brush her teeth.
Brennan slides into bed and gets on her side facing the sleeping baby, he stirs a bit so she puts a hand on his stomach and gently coos him until he goes back to sleep. She then just stays awake watching the rise and fall of his little chest until she herself falls sleep. She's had a long day too.
