Chapter Two: Dealing with the Matchmaker

The doors to the Matchmaker's office opened up was pushed open by the Matchmaker herself. Matchmaker Wendy, a Chow Chow, was wearing a purple dress with a red belt. In her paws she held a checklist. She removed a brush from her ear and cast a quick glance over the girls before calling out, "Chili Redler."

"Present, ma'am." Chili said as she stood back up. Seeing this as incorrect, Wendy turned and wrote down, "Speaking without permission."

"Oops." Chili face palmed at how she messed up so soon. Without another word she followed after Wendy the Matchmaker into the building. Back over in the crowd, Grandma Lucy leaned towards Grace and asked, "Who spit in her brekky this morning?"

Grace looked to her mother-in-law before they turned their gazes back to the building. Matchmaker Wendy allowed Chili to walk inside before closing the double doors with a slam.

Chili stood absolutely as Matchmaker Wendy started her inspection. Wendy looked over her dress for a moment. Chili tensed up when Wendy placed two fingers on her left shoulder before using a paw to twist her around. When she finished, Wendy shook her head, "A little too skinny." Looking to Chili she said, "Not good for bearing sons."

Wendy cast one more glance behind Chili before taking notice of something. She jotted something down on her pad, "Lack of discipline for tail."

Chili's eyes widened before glancing to see her tail slightly wagging. With one paw she reached behind her and forcefully stopped her tail. Her movement caused the latch on the cricket's cage to come loose. Seeing an opportunity, the cricket pushed the cage door, looked to see if the coast was clear and hopped out. Chili happened to see the cricket land on Matchmaker Wendy's shoulder before reaching out and silently grabbing it. She tried to put it back in the cage, but the cricket was able to slip from her grasp. Chili tried to silently grab it again but it kept hopping out of the way. When it tried to jump away from her, Chili was able to grab it with both hands. She looked to see Wendy turning to her again and did the only thing she could do with cricket; she popped it into her mouth. She quickly stood at attention as Wendy came to her and said, "Recite the final admonition."

"Mmm-hmm." Chili nodded to cover up the muffled chirping coming from her mouth. She whipped out her fan and opened it just as Wendy questioned, "Well?"

When she was sure that the Matchmaker wasn't looking, Chili secretly spat the cricket out of her mouth. She silently gagged from having it in her mouth before taking a deep breath. She tried to remember as she started, "Fulfill your duties calmly and…" When she had trouble she took a quick glance at her arm, "respectfully."

Chili noticed that her ink was starting to rub off but she could make it out, "Reflect before snack…" She froze up a little before quickly correcting while casting a worrying glance to a passing Wendy, "Act! This shall bring you honor and glory."

She fanned herself and took a deep breath. Wendy came back over and grabbed the Red Heeler's wrist. The Chow Chow grabbed the fan from Chili's paw and looked it over to see if there were any notes on it. Chili was a little nervous when she saw that Wendy's paw was over the wet ink of her notes. When she didn't see anything, Wendy placed the fan back into Chili's paw and led her to a table, "This way."

Matchmaker Wendy released her grip on Chili's arm, but the ink from Chili's notes had stained her paw. But Wendy didn't seem to notice as she grabbed a readied pot of tea from a heater. Placing the pot on the table she instructed while still not noticing her paw, "Now, pour the tea."

Chili knelt down next to the table as she was slightly distracted by the ink on Wendy's paw. The Red Heeler slowly grabbed the tea pot as Matchmaker Wendy said, "In order to please your future in-laws, you must demonstrate a sense of dignity," With her left paw, the Chow Chow painted on her face without knowing, "and refinement."

Chili was so distracted by what she was seeing that she didn't notice that she wasn't pouring the tea into the cup. She quickly fixed her mistake and paid attention when Wendy then said, "You must also be poised."

Chili heard a soft chirp coming from the cup and her eyes widened from what she saw. The cricket had at some point had snuck into the cup and was not treating the hot tea as a miniature hot tub. Chili was shocked when Wendy grabbed the cup and started to say something, "Um, pardon me, ma'am."

"And silent!" Wendy sternly added, causing Chili to close her mouth. Matchmaker Wendy took a deep breath as she smelled the tea. Though she enjoyed the smell of the tea, she made the cricket nervous as he quietly chirped. Chili had quietly snuck onto the table and reached for the cup. She nervously asked when she grabbed it, "Could I just take that back for a moment?" Chili and Matchmaker Wendy entered a tug of war and Chili stated, "Just for a moment."

The cup was pulled back and forth as they struggled with it. But both Dogs ended up losing their grip on the cup and fell backwards. Chili fell against the table while Matchmaker Wendy landed on the floor and the cricket hid itself within Wendy's dress. Chili sat up just as Wendy rose back on her feet. The ticked off Chow Chow raised her paws and looked as if she were about to teach Chili some manners, "Why, you clumsy…"

But she was stopped when something started moving around in her dress. Wendy started screaming as she tried to get the cricket out. Chili gasped when Wendy backed into the heater and knocked the coals onto the floor. Wendy stumbled before falling bum first onto the coals. The heat from the coals sizzled for a moment and Wendy started to smell something burning. Looking to Chili she asked, "Is something burning?"

"Uh…" Chili started to say before Wendy started screaming in pain from the intense heat. She jumped back onto her feet and ran and jumped around while trying to put out the burning feeling. Chili looked about for something to put it out, her eyes fell on the fan and she picked it up. Running over to Wendy who was still trying to put it out, Chili waved her fan once. But it had the opposite effect by causing a small fire to erupt on the dress. Wendy's screaming intensified as she fell on the table to try and smother the flames. But when it didn't work, she got back up and started running around again.

Outside the Matchmaker's building, everyone could hear the commotion happening. The majority of the people winced when they heard a loud clattering coming from inside. Grandma Lucy looked Grace and asked, "I think it's going very well, don't you?"

"I don't think so, Miss Lucy." The Blue Heeler from earlier whispered while Grace could only imagine what was happening.

Everyone was really shocked when Matchmaker Wendy came bursting out of the building with smoke from the fire on her bum billowing out. She was still screaming in pain and fear, "Put it out! Put it out! Put it out!"

Chili came running out of the building with the tea pot in her paws before throwing the contents onto the Chow Chow. He tea hit Matchmaker Wendy in the face but did the trick as the fire was put out. Though she was no longer in danger, the Chow Chow didn't have a happy look on her face. While most of the group and the other girls to see Wendy were very shocked by this, the Red and Blue Heelers giggled a little from the scene, only to be lightly shushed by Grace. Deciding to quickly leave, Chili handed Wendy the tea pot back before walking down the stairs with a paw covering her face. The cricket came frantically hopping out before jumping back into its cage and closing the door behind it.

When she rejoined her family and the two little girls, they looked back to see a huffing Wendy rushing right up to them. In a fit of rage, the Chow Chow threw the tea pot to the ground and it shattered into pieces as she shouted, "You are a disgrace!" Her makeup was really running when she said, "You may look like a bride, but you will never ever bring your family honor!"

Matchmaker Wendy took a deep breath before turning to go back into the building. While most of the townspeople started murmuring to each other, Grace, the Blue and Red Heeler looked to Chili with sympathy while Lucy cast a glare in the Chow Chow's direction. The little Blue Heeler patted Chili's hand and said, "I'm sorry that she was so mean to you."

"You going to be okay, Miss Chili?" The Red Heeler asked her. Though she didn't look it, Chili nodded, "Yeah."

"Come on, let's go home." Grace said and led Chili away. The two little dogs wanted to go with them, but they knew that they were needed to head home as well.

TheWriterForGod42: Well, that was a comical and intense moment.

Walking into the room, Wendy: I'll say, I have a lot more to lose than her.

Matchmaker: (Scoffs) But I didn't exactly see that touching moment, Mr. Writer.

TheWriterForGod42: That's because you weren't looking hard enough, Miss Matchmaker. Right Wendy?

Wendy: I didn't exactly see it either.

TheWriterForGod42: Uh! It was at the end.

Author's Note: I know that it was a humorous chapter with a little addition to it, and I do apologize for the small touching seen of family and friends trying to comfort Chili. But hey, at least it shows that we can all care. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
