Thank you to Senema for her beta, all remaining mistakes are my own. Enjoy and tell me, how you like it.

I think I will take a break from writing for a few weeks. There are a few things, I have to take care off, just that you know you will have to wait for the next update.

Chapter 9

The lights in the cell turned on at 8 a.m. and woke the prisoners.

Elijah blinked in confusion in the too bright light as he straightened up. Really, what a rude awakening!

His three cellmates got up too and started stretching.

"What happens next?" Elijah asked curiously, sitting on the edge of the bed and watching them.

"The guards will open the cell doors one by one and take us to the mess hall for breakfast", the leader answered willingly. "After that, it depends which further plans the cops have for you."

"Thanks very much." Elijah looked in their eyes and compelled them. "When we leave the cell, the same rules I gave you for inside apply for outside as well." It was better that way; otherwise, they could get the idea of attacking him after all.

Shortly afterwards the cell door opened and Sergeant Daviss stepped in with a grin, clearly expecting to find a battered and terrified Elijah. "Out with you, gentlemen!"

Elijah grinned mockingly at him as he marched completely unharmed past Daviss. He profoundly enjoyed the disappointment and surprise clearly written on Daviss's face.

The young police officer was standing outside as well but his face showed relief, although he shared Daviss's surprise about Elijah's uninjured appearance.

Apparently, the guards always released prisoners from four cells simultaneously and took them to the mess hall, where it was quite noisy. There was a long counter with several stations, where the prisoners could get their meals relatively quickly.

Elijah got in line to get his breakfast, which consisted of scrambled eggs and a slice of toast. He shared the table with the Russians, which ensured that the other prisoners avoided this table prudently and Elijah had peace.

Unfortunately, the scrambled eggs tasted as bland as they looked, not that Elijah had expected anything else. He took a sip from the plastic cup of coffee, which belonged to the breakfast as well and grimaced. Maybe he should have asked Charlotte to bring good coffee too.

While Elijah was eating his breakfast without much enthusiasm, he let his gaze wander around the room. There were probably witches here, but Elijah wouldn't recognise them without them displaying their powers. However, he identified a few werewolves who looked slightly surprised to see him here.

Elijah suspected that they rarely encountered vampires in prison thanks to their ability to compel. However, he wondered uncomfortably, what would happen to all the humans in this prison if these werewolves were still locked up tomorrow night.

Six police officers picked up the three Russians and led them away. Elijah was barely alone when one of the werewolves cautiously approached him.

Elijah, curious about what he wanted, smiled invitingly at him. "Take a seat!"

The werewolf accepted the invitation. "How does a vampire end up in jail? I mean, why didn't you compel the cops?"

"Miserable timing on my part", Elijah replied laconically. "I know tomorrow is a full moon. For curiosity's sake, what will you do? Will you still be here by then?"

"No, of course not, that would be very bad for everyone involved. I have my bail hearing later today." The werewolf looked around furtively. "Does your lawyer know what you are?" Elijah nodded tersely. "Then he should contact Judge Sharon Cosby. The people in the know have no interest to leave supernatural beings like us in the hands of the human law enforcement."

"Thank you for this useful information." Elijah smiled kindly. "However, I can't help but wonder why you are so helpful to me, a vampire?"

The werewolf gazed away nervously before he looked Elijah in the eyes again. "Maybe we'll see each other again and then you will owe me a favour."

"Maybe", Elijah agreed. He added in his thoughts, but only if you have nothing to do with my stay here.

The werewolf then withdrew, clearly uncomfortable about remaining around a vampire any longer than necessary.

The young police officer came for him. "Back to your cell but you will have it for yourself now." He hesitated. "Are you alright?"

"I am fine, thank you. My cellmates were extremely pleasant and considerate", Elijah replied.

"Okay, if you say so", said the police officer sceptically, clearly not believing a single word. He took Elijah back to his cell without asking any further questions. "You will be taken from the cell at 1:30 p.m. and brought to the interrogation room."

When the cell door closed behind Elijah, he sighed. He would definitely ask Charlotte about this judge. He could do without another day in prison because he could feel his natural aggression slowly increasing and his patience rapidly dwindling.

After Lucifer returned to his penthouse, he organized, as he had promised his mother, the delivery of Elijah's blood bags.

Next, he gave Maze the job of checking in with her contacts in the vampire, werewolf and witch communities to see if any of them had heard anything.

With a grim face, Maze nodded and set off while Lucifer lay down for a few hours.

Linda woke him quite roughly when she pulled the covers from him. "How can you sleep right now? Why aren't you with Chloe helping her prove Elijah's innocence?"

Lucifer blinked sleepily. "I've already started Maze on it. I can't solve this case by working with Chloe and the use of normal human police methods. I am convinced that this case has to do with Elijah's past as a vampire."

Linda sank discouraged on the bed. "If only I had accepted his offer to take me home."

"It's not your fault, you couldn't know." Lucifer comforted her. "If he had gone with you, then then they would have simply sprung the trap later. Someone put a lot of time and effort into this trap." His voice turned grim. "And if I find them, I'll punish them for it."

Linda looked at him sideways. "I thought they were out of your dominion."

"They may not come into my kingdom." Lucifer grinned maliciously. "But there are so many ways to punish someone, I will find a way."

"Can I stay here and help you?" Linda asked quietly.

"Of course, but it could be dangerous. Apparently, Elijah's brother is coming to Los Angeles and he seems to be the ferocious type." Lucifer looked at her seriously.

"I will take the risk." Linda's voice was determined.

"As you wish." Lucifer shrugged and glanced at the clock; it was almost two pm. "Come on, let's go downstairs, maybe Maze found someone with information he or she wants to share."

Linda chuckled softly. "If anyone can do that, it's Maze. But I doubt she will give this someone much choice in the matter."

When they came downstairs, Maze was actually waiting for them with a man who appeared young, at least on the outside.

Lucifer recognized him; it was Danny, the vampire, who had initially told Maze about the Original. He had to ask Maze if she'd found him by now. "Danny", he greeted the young vampire jovially. "How nice to see you!"

"Maze told me you wanted to talk to me about a certain subject." Danny's gaze wandered to Linda, unsure of how freely he could talk in her presence.

"You can talk without concerns", said Lucifer cheerful. "Linda knows about everything."

"It's not exactly a safe knowledge for humans to have", Danny said uncomfortably.

"This is not your problem to think about", Maze cut in brittle. "Tell Lucifer what you told me, Danny."

Danny shrugged and started talking. "I work for a council that tries to keep some peace between the three races in Los Angeles." He laughed bitterly. "In my opinion, they are not always particularly successful.

You need to know, the council usually gets alerted when the police arrests a supernatural being. We have someone for this at every police station. The council informs me and I get in touch with the arrested person to help him with the human bureaucracy. But this time everything went differently.

A werewolf I know called me this morning and told me that he ran into a vampire in prison, which is extremely unusual. I called the council and got the answer that they already knew about it and then I got the order not to do anything and that this vampire is completely on his own." Danny looked upset. "I don't need to tell you what an incredibly bad and very risky idea this is but there was nothing I could do."

Lucifer and Maze exchanged worried looks, this sounded like a real big conspiracy with many people involved in it.

"Unable to go against the council's orders in this regard, I decided to do a little bit of research about the last few days and got lucky. Strangers have apparently been in the city since a few days but I have not been able to find out what species they belong to, their names or what they plan. They have made contact with the more radical members of the witch and werewolf factions. And be it through promises or threats, they managed to get their help." Danny looked quite baffled about this.

"Well, I find this incredibly fascinating", came a mocking male voice from behind them. Everyone whirled around to see a young, blond man walk slowly down the stairs. He had a sneering grin on his lips and ice-cold eyes as he looked at one after the other. When his gaze stopped on Linda, his gaze softened for a brief moment before hardening again. "I want the names and addresses of those more radical members."

Lucifer moved in front of Linda and Maze stood next to him, both ready to protect Linda. "Who are you?"

"My name is Klaus", the man introduced himself and waited for their reaction.

Lucifer heard Danny gasp audibly and when he then looked to Klaus again, he looked very satisfied.

Danny stood now next to Maze and his voice trembled slightly when he spoke to Klaus. "What is your last name?"

Maze saw that her friend looked incredibly tense and distraught.

Klaus grinned viciously at Danny. "Mikaelson."

Danny swallowed hard. "Which one of your siblings is in jail?"

This time the looks that went back and forth between Maze and Lucifer were quite confused. This had to be Elijah's brother but how could Danny know that Klaus had siblings? Moreover, Danny's fearful reaction, and it was fear, to Klaus was peculiar anyway.

"My older brother Elijah", Klaus replied, watching Danny carefully.

Danny went pale and for a moment looked like the only thing he wanted to do was to flee. "Sir, I didn't know the identity of the arrested vampire. If I had, I would have helped him regardless of the orders of the council."

This time Lucifer and Maze could clearly see that Danny was shaking with fear. What did Danny know that they did not?

"Are you taking Vervain?" Klaus asked, staring at the young vampire with interest.

Lucifer's confusion grew. What was Vervain and why did Klaus ask about it? Judging by the look on Maze's face, he wasn't alone in this confusion.

"No, sir", Danny replied immediately and obediently. "It was never needed."

Lucifer frowned. Why this reverence? He'd never thought about Danny as easily intimidated, after all, he'd gone to bed with Maze more than once.

Klaus stepped up to Danny and gazed intently in his eyes. "Did you know the name of the vampire, who got arrested?"

"No", Danny replied, his face completely blank.

"Did you tell the truth about everything you said before I made myself known?" Klaus asked next.

"Yes, I did", Danny replied monotonously.

"Do you hide anything that has to do with my brother or that could help him?" Klaus investigated.

"No, I've told you everything I know", Danny replied.

By now, Lucifer had recognized the look in Danny's eyes. People, he had used his ability against to discover their most secret desires, reacted almost the same hypnotized way. Klaus had just compelled another vampire, something that Lucifer had always thought impossible.

"Well, it looks like I'll let you live for the moment", Klaus said calmly and took a step back.

Danny bowed his head and seemed to wake up again. "Thank you for your generosity, sir." His relief was obvious and sincere.

"What, no murder yet, only death threats? Are you getting soft in your old age?" A woman's mocking voice rang out.

Lucifer looked to the top of the stairs, which a stunning blonde-haired woman with a bag in her right hand now descended, her resemblance to Klaus clearly recognizable. She stopped next to him and dropped the bag on the floor.

"You're back very quickly", said Klaus, frowning.

"I just picked out a dark suit with a white shirt, clean underwear and a blue tie; it should be serious enough for the hearing." The woman shrugged. "I wanted to be with you when you investigate the crime scene."

Klaus sighed in resignation. "May I introduce my younger sister Rebekah to you? My older sister Freya is accompanying Charlotte Richards to my brother, so that he knows, we are in town and he is not alone anymore."

"May God have mercy on us", said Danny, shocked. "Four of you together in Los Angeles? What's going on here?"

"That's a good question." Klaus now looked at Lucifer. "Are you Morningstar? Charlotte Richards said that you became friends with Elijah."

"That's right, I want to help him. But I have a question, who are you that Danny reacts to you like that?" Lucifer asked curiously.

Klaus laughed in amusement. "You don't know? Well, I don't want to be like that. Tell him about us, Danny!"

"He's Klaus Mikaelson, one of the Originals", Danny said quietly. "And he is a Hybrid, a vampire and a werewolf at the same time."

"Is that even possible?" Maze asked curiously.

"I am quite unique, love", said Klaus mockingly. Rebekah snorted contemptuously.

"Like I told Maze, they are the ones each vampire is descended from, the oldest of our kind", Danny went on to explain. "Each of them is over 1000 years old."

Linda gasped audibly. "Elijah is over a thousand years old? I mean he said he was old, but that old?"

Rebekah looked at Linda and for a moment, a strange expression crossed her face. She looked at Klaus, who ignored her conspicuously.

"Wow, no wonder, he is so good at deceiving me", murmured Lucifer.

Klaus snickered. "My brother is very talented at playing a human, if he puts his mind to it. Speaking of smelling human, you and her smell as interesting as Charlotte." He looked at Maze.

"Yes, and it is definitely not the smell of a human", agreed Rebekah softly. "What are you?"

"We all have our secrets", said Lucifer and smirked at them.

Klaus chuckled darkly. "They are granted to you, at least for the moment. Very luckily for you, my brother wants me to behave, at least to our allies." He got serious. "Show us the crime scene!"

"Follow me", said Lucifer. He took them to the alley while Linda, Maze and Danny stayed behind.

He watched curiously as Klaus and Rebekah visibly sniffed the air and slowly walked the alley up and down. At the entrance to a smaller alley, almost ten metres past the crime scene, they stopped.

Rebekah snarled. "Werewolves, judging by the smell two! They hid here and watched everything."

"Yes, but you can't smell anything of them at the crime scene", said Klaus thoughtfully. "Elijah only smelled three humans, so of course he wasn't as suspicious and prepared as he could have been. Me on the other hand…"

"Oh, spare me, Nik, I know that paranoia is your natural state", replied Rebekah and rolled her eyes.

"It was definitely a trap for Elijah", said Klaus grimly. "The only question is, what do they want, what is their goal? Did they want him arrested and sent to jail? Or did they expect that Elijah would kill or compel the arresting officers."

"No, Elijah is much too unpredictable in his reactions for a stranger", argued Rebekah. "You and I know that Elijah doesn't like to kill humans if he doesn't necessarily have to. Either they have contingency plans for every possibility or …" Rebekah broke up.

"Or they have someone on their side, who knows Elijah good enough to predict his reactions at least a little." Klaus looked pensive.

Rebekah nodded.

Lucifer had the feeling that the two Originals both thought of a very specific person, who this could be.

Guest = Thank you for your comments. Sorry that I forgot last time to answer your question. I hope you liked their first meeting and it will be more off a team effort 'lol They will find out, who Lucifer, Maze and Charlotte are, just not yet.
