Chapter 15

In front of LUX, Klaus and his group watched Rebekah, Danny and Linda walk to a stretch limousine; they got in and then drove off.

"Looks like Danny has more style and is richer than I thought", Klaus said with amusement. "In any case, Rebekah will be happy that she can ride in a limousine."

"Where do you want to go first?" asked Lucifer. He was curious what Klaus had planned with the werewolves on the list.

"Does anyone of you know a bar that is only frequented by werewolves?" Klaus asked.

Lucifer frowned worried. "Aren't you a little outnumbered if you go into such a bar alone?"

Klaus snickered. "A little, but only initially, should the werewolves actually want to fight. I won't go after the list with the werewolves. Firstly, it would take too long and I'm way too impatient for it. And secondly, they would hardly invite me into their homes."

He grimaced in disgust. "A small weakness of vampires. We have to be invited in before we can enter the homes of the living. But if it's a bar, library, etc., the invitation isn't necessary, since these places are open for anyone to enter."

"Oh, Danny didn't tell me that", Maze said in surprise.

"The good Danny has an excellent instinct for what he can and cannot tell. I'm honestly impressed." Klaus grinned in amusement. "A little tip. Always be careful who you invite into your home. Places inhabited and owned by vampires can be entered by other vampires without an invitation because we are dead and so cannot own property." He frowned. "However, I don't know to what extent this rule applies to you or Lucifer because I wouldn't necessarily call you living or human either." He shrugged. "No offense!"

"None taken", Lucifer said calmly. He tried to remember whether he had invited Elijah or Danny to his apartment.

"There's the Blue Moon, it's in a pretty rough area. That's where the biggest pack in Los Angeles has its headquarters", Maze replied. "By the way, the alpha of this pack was also at LUX yesterday evening."

"He was there? How interesting. His name?" Klaus asked lazily.

"Martin Sargon", Maze replied.

"He's not on the list Danny gave you", Lucifer said thoughtfully.

Klaus waved it off. "The list is irrelevant; it's good for ticking off the names of minions so we don't overlook anyone. In any case, it is unlikely that the real masterminds of this little plan were careless enough to leave traces of their involvement.

I just want to introduce myself to the werewolves and cause them a bit of trouble. We shake some trees and let's see, who gets rattled and afraid. The real hunt for the culprits won't begin until Elijah is out on bail. My brother no doubt has some pent up anger that he would like to get rid of. And who am I to deny him a little fun after the day he had."

Lucifer grinned slightly. He had to admit that he found Klaus' undisguised delight in creating and spreading mayhem and chaos quite entertaining. "We have to take a taxi." He pointed to his black Chevrolet Corvette. "Unfortunately, my car is only a two-seater."

Klaus admired the car. "Year of manufacture 1961 or 1962, a real beauty. The sixties were hideous but the cars built in this decade were something else. And you can take the car, I'll just follow you on foot."

"You are that fast?" Maze asked, impressed.

"Love, I'm even faster." Klaus smirked conspiratorially at her.

Maze chuckled.

Lucifer and Maze got in and then drove off. While Lucifer had to concentrate on driving, he noticed Maze glancing back from time to time. "Can you see if he's still behind us?"

"No, I can't see him", Maze replied, clearly confused, and turned back to the front.

Lucifer stopped at a red light and idly watched the pedestrians crossing the street. Among them was Klaus, who cheekily waved at them.

"How did he do that?" Maze asked intrigued.

"I don't know, but we'll definitely ask him that when we get the chance", Lucifer replied, equally intrigued.

Eventually they stopped in front of the Blue Moon and just a second later Klaus was standing next to them.

"I have to say I'm a little disappointed. For the devil, you adhere remarkably strict to traffic rules." Klaus pouted exaggeratedly

Lucifer smirked. "The detective always looks so upset and disappointed in me when I break the law. And in the bright light of day it's always difficult to get away with these things, it isn't worth the hassle. I much prefer the night."

Klaus returned the grin openly and honestly. "Me too! I don't mind the sun because I'm a hybrid, but as a vampire, the night is my natural domain."

"What will you do now?" Maze asked.

"I'm going in." Klaus looked at them seriously. "You can follow me, but I will make no guarantees for your safety."

"Don't worry, Maze can't be hurt by normal means and neither can I unless the detective is close by", Lucifer explained reassuringly.

"You're only invulnerable when the detective isn't around?" Klaus asked confused.

Lucifer looked embarrassed now. "It's too difficult to explain. Let's put that off for later!"

"All right", Klaus agreed with a shrug and entered the bar. Lucifer and Maze followed him.

The first thing Lucifer noticed was the complete silence and the utterly flabbergasted looks everyone was giving Klaus.

Klaus grinned brazenly. "Hello. I hope I do not bother you. Although, that's not true! I want to bother you. Some of you mutts are involved in a conspiracy that put my brother in jail." He looked deadly serious now. "Nobody touches my family."

Lucifer saw Martin Sargon, the alpha of the pack, push forward through the group. He looked angry but also quite confused.

"Who are you? This is a werewolf bar, no vampires allowed. And how dumb are you to challenge us the day before the full moon?" Sargon asked belligerently.

"My bad. I thought it was already common knowledge that my family and I are in Los Angeles." Klaus grinned maliciously. "I'm Klaus Mikaelson. You heard of me?"

Lucifer had expected many reactions from the werewolves present but not the utter horror and fear now on their faces. Many werewolves had jumped up and backed into a corner. Only Sargon and five or six other werewolves held their ground and stayed where they were, to form the first line of defence for the others.

Sargon swallowed. "No, I hadn't heard that. However, I don't understand what you mean about putting your brother in jail. Which brother and when should this have happened?" The confusion on his face was clear.

Lucifer felt that it was genuine. He pushed himself next to Klaus. "I think he's telling the truth."

Klaus hummed thoughtfully and now looked at the faces of the other werewolves who hadn't fled to the corners. "According to my information, you met my brother last night at LUX."

"There was only one vampire I didn't know at LUX last night", Sargon said quietly. "A special guest of Lucifer's." His gaze lingered on Lucifer and Maze. "So I didn't pay much attention to him or wanted to bother him either. Which brother of yours was it?"

"Elijah", Klaus replied, his grin spreading.

Sargon swallowed. "Oh", he whispered weakly.

It reminded Lucifer very strongly of Danny's reaction to this revelation.

"Yes, oh", said Klaus and looked at him thoughtfully. "I have information that strangers have contacted some of your werewolves. They wanted help with setting a trap for my brother. Did I mention that Elijah spent the last night in jail?"

Had Lucifer thought that Sargon couldn't look more horrified, he was now taught otherwise.

Maze had also told him that while Sargon loved to posture and be rude, he still cared about his pack and only had their best interest at heart. There was a reason the werewolves had appointed him as the leader of the largest pack in Los Angeles.

Sargon didn't react at all for a few moments, as he thought about all he had just learned, and to Lucifer's surprise, Klaus allowed him this time to think. Finally, Sargon turned around slowly and eyed a specific werewolf, who stood back in the protected group, and who now looked decidedly nervous.

Faster than Lucifer could follow, Klaus suddenly stood in front of the werewolf, clutched his throat with one hand and lifted him up effortlessly. He didn't even look at the other werewolves, who seemed quite displeased with the treatment of one of their own.

"If you want a relatively painless death, you better start talking", Klaus snarled, squeezing the throat a little more.

The werewolf clawed helplessly at Klaus' hands, his face turning blue, but it was obvious that he was completely outmatched.

One of the werewolves tried to come to his friend's aid, but suddenly Maze was standing behind him, holding a wicked-looking blade to his throat.

"I'd think twice about interfering", she hissed into the werewolf's ear while pulling his head back by his hair.

Lucifer was now in the, for him, very rare position, to be the voice of reason. "Uh, Klaus, I think he needs some oxygen to answer you."

Klaus snarled but loosened his grip and allowed the werewolf's feet to touch the ground again.

As his complexion returned to normal, the werewolf began to speak immediately. "It was a witch and a vampire, totally unknown to me and they didn't give names. They said there is a strange vampire in town that they wanted to see in prison. He should stay there without his family having access to him."

"Were you told why?" Klaus continued to ask.

"No, only that he would be used as leverage. Do what we want or he will be starved or otherwise abused", the werewolf replied fearfully. "He was to be taken to a prison where special measures were already in place to keep him helpless and weak. We were told he was a fairly patient vampire, who would play along at first, and by the time he realized what was really going on it would be too late for him."

Klaus snarled and the look in his eyes sent a shiver down Lucifer's spine. "Tell me more!"

"We were supposed to wait for a call ordering us to a specific location. We should observe but not intervene. They emphasized that we should keep a safe distance from the vampire so that he doesn't notice us", the werewolf babbled on. "Two contract killers were hired to severely injure a third man. The probability was high that the vampire would try to save the man with his blood."

"How was the victim chosen?" Lucifer asked in between.

"No idea." The werewolf shrugged disinterested. "Not that it matters, after all, it was only a human."

This time it was Lucifer, who quietly growled.

"The vampire should be found near the dead human with enough evidence that he would be denied any bail. They said the vampire knew nothing about the local practice of keeping supernatural beings out of prison." The werewolf had composed himself now and looked quite proud how his allies had considered every eventuality.

"What would you have done if the victim had survived?" Klaus asked calmly.

Somehow, this sudden calmness was more disturbing to Lucifer than the previous outburst of violence.

"A vampire was ready just in case. He would have compelled the victim to identify the vampire as the perpetrator", the werewolf readily replied.

"What were you promised for your help in this conspiracy?" Maze asked curiously.

For the first time, the werewolf looked uncertain and he stole a furtive look at Sargon.

Klaus squeezed again and Lucifer watched as his eyes turned yellow and black lines appeared around them. The threat was clear.

"They wanted to help me take over the pack", the werewolf confessed anxiously.

So far, the other werewolves had seemed scared but still ready to defend their pack member, but now they muttered quietly to each other and they seemed less combative. They aimed their angry looks no longer at Klaus and his companions but at their traitorous pack member.

Klaus tilted his head and seemed to listen to them. "It looks like your friends aren't thrilled with your chosen method of becoming their new Alpha." He grinned maliciously. "Is there anything else you would like to tell me?"

The werewolf shook his head almost imperceptibly. "Will you now kill me quickly like you promised?"

To Lucifer's bewilderment, he seemed almost hopeful about the prospect.

Klaus laughed humourlessly and let him go before turning to Sargon. "I'll make you a unique and, for me, very unusual offer, Alpha. You command your pack not to interfere in any way in the plans of my family, including when we target the werewolves involved in this plot. In return, you get this traitor and I'll let the werewolves of your pack, who are innocent, live." Klaus looked at his watch. "My offer is valid for exactly 10 seconds!"

"I accept it", Sargon answered without hesitation.

"A very good decision", Klaus praised ironically. "You can let go of that one now, Maze!"

Maze looked at Lucifer and he nodded. With a disappointed look on her face, she released the werewolf. "But someone promised me bloodshed", she grumbled unhappily.

Klaus chuckled. "Oh, Maze, I promise you'll get your bloodshed once my brother is free. But he'd give me hell if I antagonized all the werewolves in Los Angeles unnecessarily." He winked at Lucifer. "You don't want the detective be upset with you and for me it's Elijah. Nobody can look as disappointed as he and nowadays I try not to hurt or annoy him too much." Klaus looked at his watch again. "If we hurry, we'll get to the courthouse in time to join and support Elijah at his bail hearing."

Lucifer knew Klaus would never admit it, but that was probably the main reason for being so conspicuously generous to Sargon. From what he had heard about Klaus so far, this approach was extremely unusual for him.

Klaus left the bar, Lucifer followed him and Maze had his back as always. The last thing Lucifer saw before leaving the bar was the werewolves surrounding the traitor to their pack. If what Lucifer knew about werewolf customs was true, his death would be neither quick nor painless.

Guest = He will have a bigger role but you will have to wait a bit. I hope you like this chapter nonetheless.
