Chapter 2: Strange Scent
Lisa
I hesitated. I had been days since I left the den. The pack had been bringing me food on a daily basis but it wasn't enough. I always hungry because the pups nursed constantly. I was also extremely thirsty as I hadn't had water in days.
I debated whether or not I should leave the den to go hunt. I was alone right now. A rarity indeed. Greyson had said he wouldn't be gone for long.
I needed to get out and go hunt. But I hesitated in leaving my pups alone and unprotected. What if something happened to them while I was gone?
I sighed. I was being slightly irrational. They were safely hidden away in the den. Although the pups were a bit rambunctious they wouldn't leave. They were far too happy playing with one another to venture away from the home I'd created for them.
It would be just for a little while. Thats what I decided. There was a river that was not too far away from where I was. I could smell the water from where I stood.
I ran and boy did it feel good to run again. The speed was probably my favorite part of this whole werewolf mess. I skidded to a halt as I reached the very edge of the river. I stood there drinking water for minutes on end. The coolness of the water soothed my dry throat.
A deer had just come over for a drink and I chased after the animal. It took all but two seconds to pounce on him. I went straight for his jugular and delivered a quick painless death.
I tore a chunk out of his flesh and savored the taste of the raw meat mixed in with fresh blood. I hadn't realized exactly how hungry I was until that very moment.
I sniffed. I could smell more deer close by. I followed the scent away from the river. I stopped in my tracks when I picked up an odor so rancid, so sickly sweet that it very nearly made me vomit.
Curious as to know what creature left such an awful smell behind I decided to track it down. The disgusting scent began to intermix with the scent of deer.
I froze when I saw what at first appeared to be a woman biting into the deer's throat. Then more of them came out of nowhere.
I could feel every single strand of fur on m body raising. My heart hammered hard in my chest. My instincts were telling me that I was outnumbered and that I should run right now..
I shook my head. It was a silly thought. These women were only human. I was a werewolf. An extremely fast and strong werewolf.
One of the women suddenly, and unexpectedly looked at me. Her gold eyes and pale skin took me by surprise. She was beautiful.
The other women turned around and .stared at me. All of them had the same gold eyes and pale skin. "What is a wolf doing here? I thought they all lived in Washington in Forks? Has Carlisle misinformed us?"
"I don't think he would intentionally do that Tanya," one of the other women replied. "It doesn't matter. We can handle one lone wolf,"
I bared my teeth and growled when the threat reached my ears. "Oh try it wolf. See where that lands you. I can promise you that we are a lot stronger than you are,"
I didn't doubt her words. Without the pack I was seriously outnumbered. If the rest of the pack we'd be evenly matched in turns of numbers. These creatures, whatever they were, obviously not human. I didn't want to miss with them.
I rushed back to the den where my pups were eagerly waiting for me. I was more than relieved to be back here with them. I fell asleep with my babies snuggled up close to me.
I woke up a little while later when I heard voices nearby. Every bone in my body tensed ready for a fight. My urge to protect my pups stronger than anything else.
"It was just a lone wolf. He won't be a problem for us. The wolves don't have any claim on this land. This is neutral territory. If he attacks us then we will attack him,"
I stood up. If they came any closer I was going to attack.
"I just wonder why Carlisle wouldn't wadn us that a wolf had moved out here when we told him where we were moving,"
"Kate I don't think he knew,"
The voices were getting close. I was ready to fight if I had to.
"What's going on?" Greyson asked. He and the others had just shifted.
"Danger," was the only word on my mind.
I ran out of the den growling and snarling. Greyson, Delilah, Edgar, Jeremy, and Henry had joined me. Together we chased these strange creatures away from our den ready to defend the pups at all costs.
They were fast. They were fast. For the first time we were testing the limits of our own speed. They evaded us by climbing up trees so fast that we barely saw them. They were just out of reach so no matter how high we jumped we couldn't get to them.
"Lisa let's get out of here and get back to the pups. Now. We can't leave them unprotected,"
"You're right,"
We couldn't leave our pups unprotected. Not with these dangerous creatures around. I growled at them. It was meant to be a warning. If they came near my pups again I would rip them apart. I would defend my pups at all costs. They were my babies and I loved them more than life itself. I wouldn't hesitate to kill in order to keep them safe.
