Chapter 4: Talk
Lisa
Every muscle in my body was tense and ready for a fight. I could feel the rest of the pack's tension as well. Greyson stood right next to me. I could feel his tense body pressed up against my own.
The beautiful strangers were poised as if they were ready for a fight as well. It became evident very quickly that no was going to back down should it come to a fight.
Would we win a fight though? I didn't like how even the odds were. But if they dared to make one move I wouldn't hesitate to attack. Protecting our pups. That was all that mattered at this point.
Then two more of them appeared. Another blond guy and a guy with bronze hair color. I growled in warning. My hackles raised. Then a wave of calm washed over us simultaneously. I could feel the rippling affects of this sudden calmness over the entire pack.
The tension began to evaporate from my body. My muscles unlocked from their stiffened position. It was strange. Unnatural even. I wanted to be angry but it was physically impossible to do so. We never did want to fight anyway. The pups was our only concern.
"Their calm now," the blond newcomer said.
"Thank you Jasper,"
Their calm now. How could he possibly know that? Well perhaps our relaxed body postures was enough of a hint.
Greyson and I growled in warning when they took a step closer. Our pups remained in the den but I could sense their eagerness to come out and see what all the commotion was about.
"We don't want to fight you but we will if you keep acting aggressively," the blonde leader said.
"They don't want to fight either," the bronze haired boy answered.
"Then why are they acting hostile toward us,"
"It's fascinating really. They're not acting aggressively for no reason. They have a reason alright,"
"Son we haven't done anything to them,"
"But they sense the danger of our kind all the same. They don't want to fight but they will if they have to to protect something far more precious,"
"What are they protecting?"
"Just when I thought we'd learned everything about the wolves. I don't think even the Quileute elders could've predicted something like this happening,"
"Son I'm not following,"
"Carlisle in the history of their tribe only males have shifted until Leah and there haven't been anymore females until now,"
"I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at Edward,"
"They rely on their stories so much. But with there having only been male wolves until quite recently no of them have ever considered what would happen if a male wolf had sexual relations with a female wolf since there never were female wolves,"
"What does that mean?"
I thought of my seven pups down there in the den. Four eager little boys and three eager little girls.
"There's a litter of pups down there in that den. That's why they're acting aggressively. It's to protect their pups. They don't want to attack but they will defend if feel they have to.
I was a bit stumped by how he could possibly know that. The pups were safely hidden away in the den. I wondered why they were so shocked that we could reproduce.
Oh we could reproduce alright. We enjoyed every minute of it also. Well maybe not every minute. It was very pleasurable at first. Just us wolves in the woods. I remembered the thrill I felt when he mounted me. But there was a moment if panic afterwards when we were unable to separate. We were literally stuck together. It wasn't until about thirty minutes later that we were able to uncouple. That did that stop us from doing the deed again though? Definitely not but at least we knew what to expect.
"Edward which one is the alpha?" the named Carlisle asked.
"They both are," the mysterious bronze haired boy said as he pointed at Greyson and I. Again I was left to wonder how he knew this.
"Two alphas?" someone questioned. "That's not possible. They've always said their could only be one alpha,"
"I don't understand it either but both of them are alphas. They both lead the pack,"
To my surprise Carlisle looked at us both and said "I'd like to speak to you both but it would be much easier if I could understand you as well. I promise your pups are in no danger from my family,"
No. I didn't feel comfortable with this and I didn't feel comfortable leaving the pups.
"They don't feel comfortable with us,"
"I understand. Perhaps they'll be more comfortable with their own kind. When did Nessie say they were coming?"
"They were landing in a few hours. The whole pack is coming also,"
I didn't understand anything that they were talking about and I was honestly too tired to figure it out.
More of their own kind. The words echoed throughout the pack mind. The strange creatures left us to ponder what they'd said. I rushed back to attend to my pups.
We didn't emerge from the den until hours later. It was just before sunset. The forest was quiet and then a second later howling erupted somewhere in the forest. We all looked at one another quizzically.
I couldn't resist the urge to howl back. Then Greyson started howling also. In just a matter of seconds we were all howling. Even our pups were attempting to howl.
Then we saw them emerge from the distance one by one. Huge, massive wolves like ourselves. We stood there frozen in shock. This pack was led by only one wolf. I was awestruck by his reddish brown fur that matched mine to a tee.
Curious about these newcomers I managed to unfreeze myself from my current position and I began to walk to walk in their direction. The other wolves watched me with curiosity.
It was strange that I couldn't hear their thoughts. Maybe hearing thoughts was limited to only members of your own pack.
The leader, the other reddish brown wolf, walked forward to meet me. I let him sniff me. I wondered what I smelled like him. My scent had apparently been altered after I'd given birth. I smelled like a lactating wolf to the rest of my pack. The scent of the milk I was constantly producing was strong enough to alter my scent for now.
There was something oddly familiar about this wold and his scent. It was comforting and I was drawn to it. I had the strangest feeling that we met before as crazy as that sounded.
He nuzzled me gently and I nuzzled him back. He was a head taller than me so I just nuzzled into his chest. Then he started licking my face. His tail wagged so fast that I could barely see it.
The other wolves from his pack began to approach me. The huge black one stood out to me the most. The sandy colored one was kind of cute also. But perhaps what stood out to me the most is that their was only one female in this pack. She was much smaller than her male counterparts. But she was exceptionally beautiful like my Greyson. Her fur color matched his exactly. If I didn't know any better I'd say they were related.
I looked back to see what my pack was doing. Only Greyson had moved. He was lifting up his leg and peeing on a tree and marking it. I shook my head. Males.
