Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for it suddenly sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven.
Proverbs 23:4-5

When a hunter sets a trap, he put a piece of food out as bait. When an animal steps forward to eat the food the trap snaps shut and the animal is captured. Satan uses this same strategy to ensnare us. He tempts us with wealth and when we go after it he draws us in and ensnares us. We are trapped in the never ending loop of earning more and more money. And when that wealth disappears, when the stock market crashes, when we lose a bet, everything we've worked for is gone. We've wasted months, maybe years, chasing after a fortune that is gone. Even if you were a millionaire until the day you died, what good will that money do you in front of the Judgement Seat?

The lure of wealth and prosperity is one of the enemy's most common traps, and yet we fall for it so often. It's important to be aware of his tricks so we can prepare for them. We will be tempted, but with the power of the Holy Spirit we will be able to resist.
