Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.
John 13:14
Jesus is saying something very important here. He called himself Lord and Teacher. In Jewish society a teacher or master was a very important figure. Jesus was more important than any teacher, as he is our Lord as well, and yet he humbled himself. In Jewish society the lowest of the servants would wash the feet of the guests, never the teacher, and Jesus broke these rules to teach his disciples and his followers today a very important lesson.
He humbled himself to do the dirtiest work, the most undesirable work of all. He set an example for us. He is our master and we follow in his footsteps. If he humbled himself, so should we. We should give everything we've got to serve him and others, whether serving in a big way or small way. If that means doing the dishes every night, let's do it. If that means serving overseas telling people about Him, let's do it. If that means giving up everything and living in a mud hut, we should put aside our pride and do it. Following him will never be easy, but it is always worth it.
