I wake up to my alarm beeping. I turn it off and stretch. I get out of bed and take a shower. I dress in black skinny jeans and a dark blue long sleeve t-shirt. I dry my dark brown hair and straighten it. I put on a floral headband and smile to myself in the mirror. I go downstairs for breakfast and eat some cereal and drink a cup of coffee. I go to my bathroom to brush my teeth and apply some makeup. I wear a pair of socks and put on my black sketchers. I wear my grey hoodie over my shirt, and I grab my phone, charger, and keys and put it in my purse. Mom has already left for the day because she has an early class. I lock the door behind me and walk across the street to Swan's residence. I ring the doorbell and Bella answers the door. I can hear Charlie asking who it is.
"It's Diana, dad. We're going to hang out today."
I walk into the house and wave at Chief Swan.
"Oh?" Charlie asks.
I nod and answer. "Hello sir. How are you doing?"
"Good. It's good to see you, Diana. It's been a while, how is your mom doing?"
"She is well. Thank you! And it's good to see you too." I reply.
"Okay dad, we'll be in my room." Bella says and indicates for me to follow her upstairs. I follow her to her room, and she has her laptop open on her bed. She is researching local junk yards that have motorcycles. She closes the door and sits on her bed.
"Hey, so what is the surprise?" I ask as I take a sit on the chair at her desk.
"This." Bella says and she shows me her laptop.
"Umm…I'm confused." I say as I tilt my head to the side.
Bella rolls her eyes and says. "I want to get a used motorcycle. I have a friend who is a great mechanic…he built my truck. I think he'll be willing to fix the bike too."
"What?" I gasp and my eyes grow big as saucers. "Are you crazy? Do you even know how to ride a motorcycle? Do you have a license for that? And what about insurance and registration?"
"Well, it's going to take a while for the bike to get fixed. I do have a driver's license and that's the minimum required to operate a motorcycle. Insurance isn't required in Washington. As long as I don't take it out of state, I'm good. Registration fees came up to $31.62 and I can pay that." Bella explains confidently and I believe every word of it. Her dad is the Chief of Police after all.
I sigh and say. "I don't like this…but you are an adult Bella. I see that you have done your research and it seems I can't stop you. But where do I come in?"
"I'm hoping you'll come to the junk yard with me today."
I'm stunned and it takes me a minute to respond. "Um...sure, I guess. When do we leave?"
"We can go right now. It's in Port Angeles." Bella says and she grabs her jacket, wallet, phone, and keys. We get into her truck, and she drives to the junk yard she found online.
After an hour we get to the place and it's not as shabby as I thought it would be. A middle aged, bearded man comes up to us and asks what we need. Bella explains she is looking for a motorcycle and he waves to us to follow him. He shows us about five different ones and Bella can't choose between them. She looks at me for help and I shrug my shoulders. I'm not a mechanic! Maybe she should've came in with her mechanic friend. She asks for the price and the guy says we can take them. He has no use for them, and they are taking up space. We thank him and he offers to load them up onto the truck. Bella drives us back to Forks and continues driving to La Push.
"Hey, where are you going?" I ask as we pass Forks.
"We are going to my friend's house. I hope that's okay. You don't have to go home, do you?" Bella asks in concern.
I shake my head. "No…I don't have to be back yet. I'm actually free all day. So, your friend lives in La Push?"
Bella nods her head. "Yeah. He is great! His name is Jacob Black, and he is about your age."
Once Bella says his name, I gasp loudly and start to cough. Bella turns to me and starts to pat my back softly.
"Jacob Black?" I ask her to make sure I heard her right.
Bella nods and then frowns. "Yes…why? Do you know him?"
I snort and tell her about the night she went missing. By the end, I'm scowling at the way Jacob acted that night.
"I don't actually have to spend the whole day there, do I?" I plead.
Bella looks at me and offers to take me back. I shake my head no and tell her I'll be fine. I'll take a walk on the beach or something. Last time I went to La Push, it was two summers ago when my cousin visited. We reach a small wooden house with narrow windows, the dull red paint making it resemble a tiny barn. I assume this is the Black residence. Bella and I get out of the truck, and I stand back while Jacob comes out from the back of the house. He is so tall and muscular. He looks so different from the last time I saw him.
"Bella! Where the hell have you been, loca?" Jacob says as he lifts Bella from the ground and gives her a bear hug. He puts her down and sees me by the truck. A frown forms on his face.
"Hello." I say and wave to him. He doesn't wave back, and his frown deepens.
"I didn't know you were bringing her."
"Jake! Don't be mean. Diana is pretty cool. Why don't you give her another chance?" Bella says and I roll my eyes. Give me a second chance? He was the one who was rude to me. I should give HIM a second chance. I think to myself with a huff.
"Actually, Bella I'm just going to take a walk on the beach. Call or text me once you are done." I start to walk towards the dirt road.
"Wait! It's about to rain. If you can't stand my presence you can stay in the house." Jacob says while crossing his arms over his chest.
I look up at the sky and see the grey clouds rolling in. I sigh and walk back towards the pair. I wait for Jacob to lead the way to his house, but he doesn't move. I stare at him expectantly and he stares back.
"Well? What are you waiting for? A tour?" Jacob says with a smirk. I glare and walk over to the front door. I hear Bella telling Jacob about the bikes.
"I get it if you think this is really stupid and reckless." Bella says and I can't help but agree. Jacob's response shocks me.
"Yeah, it's completely stupid and reckless. When do we start?" I sigh sadly and shake my head. I expected that Jacob will try to talk her out of it, but I was wrong to think that.
I don't see a doorbell, so I just knock. Jacob sees that I'm still outside and rolls his eyes.
"Just go in." he says and lifts the bikes from the back of the truck easily. I knock once more and turn the doorknob. I enter the house and see Billy wheeling himself forward when he sees me.
I wave to him and say. "Hello Mr. Black. How are you? I hope I'm not bothering you."
"Not at all Diana. And please call me Billy. Mr. Black was my father. Are you here to see Jacob?" He asks with a smile. It starts raining as I close the door behind me.
I shake my head. "No, I came here with Bella and Jacob said I could come in."
"Ah, I see. Well, don't just stand there. Take a seat! Do you want something to drink?"
"Thank you." I sit down on the coach and look around the room. It is small but very homey. There are Native American décor around the living room, and I'm fascinated by them all. I get up to look closer at a hand-painted art on the wall. It's First Beach right before sunset and it is very pretty.
"My wife drew that. It is one of her last paintings. My daughters have most of her collection." Billy says suddenly and I jump and turn around to look at him.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to startle you. Do you paint?"
I laugh and shake my head. "I wish! My cousin is the painter in the family. Along with my Aunt Mel and Nana."
I then realize he said her last painting. I'm suddenly uncomfortable and look around me. Billy notices my uneasiness and changes the subject.
"Would you like some tea or coffee?"
"Coffee please. Thank you!" I say with a small smile and sit down again. I take out my phone for messages and Bella has texted me.
Don't tell Billy what we are doing! He'll tell Charlie.
I roll my eyes and type. OK
Billy calls me into the kitchen, and I reluctantly go there. I'm not comfortable walking around people's homes without them in the lead.
"Yes sir?" I ask and I see him preparing the coffee maker.
He chuckles at my polite tone of voice. "I wasn't sure if you take sugar or creamer. Or both?"
"Both please." I say and take a sit at the kitchen table. He wheels himself to the table and fold his hands on top of it.
"What are they doing in the garage?" he asks suddenly, and my head turns sharply to him. Does he know? Did he see the bikes? I think to myself and try to come up with a believable lie.
"Bella wanted to hang out with Jacob but also asked me to come too. She didn't know we met before today. Jacob and I don't get along." Not a lie but not the whole truth. I try to keep my composure and Billy is analyzing my face for a hint of a lie. After a minute or two he nods his head.
"I'm sorry to hear that. Did Jacob say anything to you?" Billy seems sincere and I'm shocked at his apology.
"Not really…we are just too different." I say and he sighs.
"I tried my best with him, but I'm worried about him." Billy looks distraught.
"What do you mean?" I ask and mentally kick myself. It's rude to probe into people's lives!
"His mom passed when he was nine years old, and I became wheelchair-bound shortly after that. His sisters helped but they left for college and marriage life two years ago. He's been taking care of me, but I want him to have a normal life. Go out with friends and do the things teenagers do." Billy explains.
"I'm sorry for your loss. My dad passed two years ago. Car crash with a drunk driver." I empathize with Billy. "But isn't Jacob doing what you want him to do right now?"
Billy nods his head with a small smile. "I guess you're right. I'm sorry for your loss too Diana."
I give him a small smile and look around the kitchen. Suddenly the coffee maker beeps, and Billy says. "Coffee is ready! Feel free to grab a cup. They're in the top cabinet next to the sink. Sugar and creamer is next to the coffee maker. If you want some cookies, they're in the pantry." He instructs me and I get up to make a cup for myself.
After I pour the coffee, creamer, and sugar into a mug, I look around for a spoon to stir it. Billy points to the dish rack and I grab a spoon. "Can you do me a favor Diana?"
I nod my head as I sit back down at the table. I began to stir my coffee and take a sip. It's really good and it warms me all over.
"Can you take some coffee and cookies to Jake and Bella? I'm going to prepare lunch soon. Do you prefer ham or turkey sandwich?" He asks me as he puts a tray with two mugs, sugar packets, creamer, spoons, and Oreo cookies in front of me. I finish my coffee and get up to take the tray to the garage. The rain stopped as we were talking.
"Either one is fine by me. Do you want me to ask Bella and Jacob what they like?" I ask as I pick up the tray.
"Yes, if you don't mind." Billy says as he wheels himself to the fridge.
I nod and make my way to the garage.
"Guys are you in here?" I ask as I'm outside the door. His garage is no more than a couple of big, preformed sheds that are bolted together with their interior walls knocked out.
"Yeah." I hear Jacob's reply and I enter with the tray. Both of them stand up as I enter.
"Your dad wanted me to bring you guys coffee and cookies." I explain as I hold out the tray to Jacob. He grabs it from me and sets it on a stool.
"Thank you!" Bella says and she grabs an Oreo to eat.
I nod to her with a smile and say. "Also, Billy is making sandwiches for lunch. Do you want ham or turkey?"
Bella shakes her head and says. "He doesn't have to do that. Tell him we are leaving soon."
"Don't you want to start on the bikes today? I'm free and I can take them apart. We can get the parts tomorrow." Jacob asks as he stirs his coffee.
Bella looks at me, silently asking if I want to stay. I shrug my shoulders at her. Jacob sees our interaction and says. "Dad can take Diana home if she has other plans. Dad is probably going to your house tonight anyways to watch the game."
I can't believe him. He is trying to get rid of me. I think to myself as I glare at Jacob. Two can play this game.
"Bella, as I said before, I'm free all day. We can stay here, and you can work on the bikes. Don't worry about me! If I get bored, I'll get a ride from Billy later." I say while smirking at Jacob. He glares at me, and my smirk widens.
"Alright! If you are sure." Bella says reluctantly.
"So, ham or turkey?" I ask after a moment of silent. Bella chooses turkey and Jacob asks for ham. I nod and turn around to go back to the house.
"By the way, Billy is suspicious of what you're doing. I told him you guys are hanging out. I suggest you come up with a better lie." I say and exit the garage not waiting to hear their response.
Half hour later, Bella and Jacob come in with the tray. We eat lunch and Billy asks Jacob what they are working on. I look between him and Billy, hoping he and Bella have a plan. Jacob says he is working on the rabbit and showing it to Bella. I have no idea what a "rabbit" is supposed to be, but I assume it's a car of some sort.
After lunch, Bella and Jacob go back to the garage and I help Billy clean up. Billy and I are watching TV, when my phone rings. It's Bella and she tells me to come to the garage.
I excuse myself and make my way to the garage for the second time today. I'm surprised at what I see. Or should I say who I see.
AN: Thank you to those who followed/favorited this fic. I would also like to thank kpop2012 for your review. I'm still looking for a Beta! The registration fee I wrote is completely made up. I have no idea what it would've cost in 2006. I know Bella got the bikes from the Markses' front yard but in the movie, she mentions to Jake, she saved them from a junk yard. Story will be AU/cannon divergent from time to time; I hope that doesn't stop you from reading it.
