I awoke when my mother shook me. Her voice was urgent so when I blinked my eyes open and looked up at her I knew immediately that something was wrong. "What's happened?" Quickly I was climbing to my feet with my mom holding my arms gently.
"Take it easy sweetie, Korra is fine but Jinora…Jinora's spirit has been trapped in the Spirit World by Unalaq." She informed me and I felt my entire body suddenly rush with a cold dread as I looked over her shoulder to see Tenzin cradling her motionless body. "We're going to do everything we can, so don't panic."
"I'm fine. I'm…just tell me everything that's going on. Korra! Korra what happened?!" Pushing past my mom I ran to Korra and instantly she flung herself into my arms and buried herself there, hiding away as a few tears of shame and worry escaped so I brushed them away before anybody could notice. "Korra? Korra talk to me, what has Unalaq done?"
"He tricked me. He tricked me Kanna, he's used Jinora to make me open the northern portal and…and…" Korra could barely get the words out so I made her calm down before going things over from the very beginning, filling in all the details as we flew back to the temple. This was not looking good. Why don't these bad guys ever just give it a rest? I mean seriously, there were enough problems in the world already without other people causing huge inconveniences for others. I could barely look up as Pema cried over Jinora and it was even harder to leave her behind as the rest of us travelled back to Republic City in order to ask the President for his help. If Unalaq really did intend to take over the world and destroy it as we knew it then we were going to need all the help and allies that we could get.
All the way to Republic City my stomach was a bundle of anxiety as I worried over Jinora. I wasn't sure how her body was going to hold up being separated from her spirit for such a long duration of time, especially considering that this was the first time that she has ever spirit travelled. Korra looked worse, constantly gnawing on her lower lip so I reached out and grasped her hand, giving her a reassuring smile to try and comfort her. "We'll get Jinora back safe and sound. Don't worry Korra. We'll fix this." I told her and her eyes travelled to lock onto mine, filled with worry and concern.
"I'm the Avatar, I'm supposed to make things better but all I seem to do is make things worse. What if I can't find a way to stop Unalaq and save Jinora? I don't think I would ever be able to lift my head again." She told me in a tone of despair so I inched closer to her and placed my arm around her shoulders to comfort her.
"We'll work this out Korra so don't worry so much. Worrying won't help anyone and right now, you need a clear head. I'm right here beside you and I'm going to help you take back our home, kick Unalaq's butt and bring Jinora safely home. You're still pretty new at this whole 'Avatar saving the world thing', so don't worry if you mess up a little. I'm here to pick up the pieces and make sure you stay on track, so just leave it all to me." I told her mostly just to fill the silence and my babbling seemed to help as I felt her relax and give me a little smile of gratitude so I grinned at her, nuzzling her head to lift her spirits before we heard Tenzin announce that we were nearly there.
I had to admit, it was good to see Republic City again, I'd kind of missed the smell of fumes in the air, the cool evenings, huge buildings and glittering light shimmering like golden stars. That being said, it looks like something has happened at the stadium, there are reporters and police everywhere. Korra and I looked quickly at one another before jumping down the moment we landed, Korra racing over to the president whilst I hurried over to where Bolin and Asami were standing. "Guys! What happened?! Are you both alright?" Launching myself forwards I caught onto Asami so that I could give her a bear tight hug, Bolin letting go of the beautiful red head he had previously been kissing and flung out his hands.
"Kanna! I can't believe you're here you'll never guess what just happened!" He declared and suddenly his strong hands were gripping onto my arms rather tightly. "It was insane, these guys came out of nowhere and I slipped on a doughnut and then they tried to kidnap the president but I managed to stop them and Varrick turned out to be a bad guy!" Frowning in confusion I twisted my head back towards Asami as Bolin continued gripping on and hugging me until I could barely breathe.
"Clarification please."
"Bolin rescued the president from being kidnapped by water benders hired by Varrick who was going to frame it all on the Northern Water Tribe so that Republic City would have no choice but to go to war against Unalaq." Asami explained and I exhaled as I finally caught onto what was going on. Looks like everybody was having a rough day and it wasn't even over yet. "But what are you and Korra doing here? Has something happened?"
"Only the coming of the end of the-Bolin would you please let go?! I can barely breathe here!"
"Oh, sorry." Bolin politely put me back down with a bashful grin towards the rather irritated looking redhead as I breathed deeply and freely before continuing.
"Korra kind of got tricked by Unalaq into opening the Northern portal to the spirit world and now he's planning all this super villainous stuff and he's got Jinora trapped in the spirit world. Basically." Asami blinked, both she and Bolin staring at me so I lifted my hands in a shrug. "Hey, I'm just repeating everything that I understand out of everything that's happened in this crazy venture." Waving my hand I gestured for both of them to turn their attention towards Korra who had finally gotten President Raiko's attention from the press.
"President Raiko. Sir, I know I've asked for your help before but things have changed. Unalaq doesn't just want to take over the South anymore, he wants to destroy the whole world." A little blunt but that's just Korra for you. Standing with my hands on my hips I glanced across to Bolin who had his jaw hanging wide open so I clicked it shut with a flick of my hand, snapping him awake.
"Unalaq is gonna destroy the world? He really does have a doomsday device?"
"He's trying to release a powerful dark spirit during Harmonic Convergence, which is only a few days away. If he succeeds, the world as we know it is over. Sir, we desperately need your help." Korra implored, once more turning to Raiko who considered for only a brief moment before turning his severe gaze back to Korra.
"I'm sorry, Korra, but my answer is still no." I felt my own stomach drop for a second, mouth gaping open as Bolin did the same. No? Just like that?
"There are lives on the line! And my daughter is one of them. Raiko, you must reconsider!" Tenzin sounded as angry as I felt and I barely kept my mouth shut. In fact it was Asami who clamped her hand over my mouth to stop me from giving this idiot president a piece of my mind. Who does he think he is? I mean sure he's some kind of big shot, but that doesn't mean he's right!
"I am aware that lives are on the line and that's precisely why my troops are staying here. If the world is going to be thrown into chaos, like you claim, I need to protect my citizens. I'm sorry."
"That is ridiculous!" I yelled as I finally tugged myself free from Asami. "You're going to let my people die just so you can hole yourself up here in your nice, safe city? We can take Unalaq down right now if you just get your head out of your butt and do something about it!" Asami clapped a hand over her face in despair as my mother grabbed onto my arm and pulled me back, trying to calm me down. "But mom! He's being a total jerk!" As I seethed in anger I felt her arms wrap around me and I suddenly found myself trapped against her chest.
"I know honey but you need to calm down, this isn't going to help anybody, least of all Jinora." That got my attention so begrudgingly I clamped my mouth shut, going stiff against her as she tried to comfort me however I felt weird, standing in her arms with her being all affectionate so I pushed her away after a few moments. I just couldn't stand it, it was like there was a thousand miles between us even though we were standing right next to one another. It was cold, cold like the snow of the south and it only made me want to get as far away from her as possible. "Honey please, just talk to me."
"I don't want to talk and neither do you. You're just saying that because it's what you're supposed to say." I dismissed coldly, turning my back and stalking over to my friends to stand with them, however when Asami gave me a worrying and questioning look I simply folded my arms and glowered harder at the ground. "I don't want to talk about it." Her eyes lingered on me a few moments longer before I felt her hand touch my shoulder so I relaxed a little, returning to the conversation where Raiko was brushing Bolin off his shoulder.
"Son, I appreciate you saving my life, and I'm a big fan of your work, but my decision is final." We all watched in dismay as the president walked away from us, leaving a rather sombre mood hanging over us all as Bolin pouted.
"I never should have saved that guy."
"If you guys need help, I'm here for you." Asami stated proudly, her smile gleaming with her eyes as Korra and I perked up a little, reassured by her words as Bolin sprung around to face us as well with his usual boundless energy.
"Yeah, me too!"
"Thank you. It's so good to see you guys again." Korra said and I nodded in agreement, giving a grin to Asami who chuckled softly in return. "Wait, where's Mako?" That's a point. I don't see the hothead anywhere and he's usually stuck to Bolin like glue.
"Oh, he got thrown in jail." Bolin stated nonchalantly but both Korra and I looked at one another sharply, eyes going wide before we both yelled loudly.
"WHAT?!"
