Luz woke up the next morning and went downstairs, where she saw Lilith was awake.
"Luz, I'm glad I was able to catch up with you." Lilith said, "I wanted to speak to you last night, but... well, seeing as I woke up with a blanket, I can only assume that I feel asleep before you got back."
"Yeah, I noticed that you were here." Luz said, "Is there a reason you visited?"
"Well, Edalyn always told me that if something happened to her, I should always check the vase on the shelf. I checked and found two envelopes. One addressed to me and the other one addressed to you." Lilith handed Luz the envelope, "I already opened mine, so here's yours."
Luz took it and looked at it. She was very tempted to just put it down and forget about it. The fear of what might be in this is horrifying, but she pushed those thoughts aside and opened the envelope. She pulled out the letter, the first of several papers in there.
Dear Lu- oh fuck it, I'm not being formal two times in a row. Hey Kid.
Well, if you're reading this, then I done bit the dust. Now, I know you'll probably start to get a little cold and distant, let me tell you right now... stop that. Don't get sad over my death, it was bound to happen, no matter how powerful magic is, it can't extend a life. Now sit down and be quiet because I have a lot to tell you. To start, congratulations, you own a house now. I had the Owl House transferred over to you for when, well this. I also included my life savings, that should last you a few years. Damn, I was rich. Anyway, there was something important I wanted you to know. I never believed in prophecies or chosen ones or anything like that. That all happened because of an ancestor of mine, named Horace, who tried to save the Isles by trying find the people that the "Prophecy" talks about. It killed him. So yeah, I don't believe in that stuff, but then I met you. The prophecy talks about people who can control the Elements, but also have the ability to do natural magic. I mean, you're the only person I know that can bend all four, and I guess your glyphs count as natural magic... listen kid, I don't know how this stuff is supposed to work, but I'm confident that you're the person that this prophecy is talking about. I know you'll do great things Kid, and I know you'll be a better witch than I am. Keep being wild Kid, I love ya.
Sincerely,
A Proud mentor and even prouder, adoptive, parent.
Luz felt tears run down her face as she reached into the envelope and pulled out the deed to the Owl House, signed over to her, as well as a key to an old trunk in Eda's room. Luz felt the tears get wiped away and looked up to see Lilith, with her hands on Luz's cheeks and using her thumbs to wipe the tears away.
"I know you miss Edalyn, but I also know she wouldn't want you to feel responsible." Lilith said, "So why don't we get to the Castle and do whatever it takes to bring the true people responsible to justice?"
"I... I would like that." Luz said.
Lilith brought Luz outside and they got on her staff, where they took off towards the castle.
'I'll avenge you, Eda, I promise.' Luz thought, 'They will pay.'
In another part of the Isles, several members of the Red Lotus were looking at a cage that was mostly covered in shadows.
"You're positive that this... experiment of yours will work?" One said.
"I am more sure about her than anything else." Caine said, "I put her through all the proper tests and she passed every one of them."
"I refuse to believe that something like this... beast could be of use." Another one said.
Caine put an arm around the man's shoulder.
"Well, if you want a demonstration of her ferocity, I will give you a demonstration." Caine said.
He opened the cage and threw the man in there. He slammed the cage door closed and locked it. The man started to panic as he heard growling. He looked up and saw glowing eyes looking at him. The beast fell from the top of the cage and sunk her claws into him, causing him to scream. She started to bite his throat and didn't stop until his screams stopped. She started to rip flesh from him and Caine smiled.
"Good job, Amity." Caine said, "Now, anyone else want to question my pet?"
None of them said a thing, afraid they would end the same as their friend.
"Good. Now, let's talk to get to business."
