Interlude 3: Once Upon the ∞ Time
My consciousness appeared out of nothing. Seeping out from within the ceaseless void of eternity, I became "me" again.
Once I returned, my first thought was "where am I?" I could still recall the fire, the sounds of terror, and the burning eyes of that indomitable being staring me down. I desperately looked around the room.
It looked familiar. Stone walls and wooden floors surrounded a warm, inviting room, with a large bed in the center. It was then that I saw something else.
I saw me.
My hands moved, but not as I told them to. My feet kicked around uncontrollably. Once I comprehended it all, my mind almost shattered.
That's because my hands and feet were those of a newborn child.
No, this can't be possible!
I had just fled the town square, bringing the prince to safety. How could I be a child? Did… did I die? Was this the afterlife?
I looked up at my mother, who hadn't looked that young in years. She held me tenderly in her arms, smiling at me with joy.
But in response, I opened my tiny mouth, and screamed from the bottom of my soul.
NO! I don't want to do this again! Please, just let me disappear! Don't make me relive that horrific ending again! God, someone, PLEASE HELP!
But my words were never heard.
"Aww, it's okay Dainsleif. Don't cry. Mommy is here, everything is fine."
Huh? Mommy… that's my mom? But why is she here? What is this?
"Just go to sleep now, you've had a hard day."
Sleep… sounds good. But wait, something just happened, didn't it? I was somewhere else… and…
The woman whispered a heartfelt lullaby, surrounding the baby with unconditional love.
I… I need to… eh? Who… …am…
As the woman smiled, the tiny newborn fell asleep in the safety of his mother's arms.
