A Bloody Welcome

Yes, he remembered now. Ethan Crane, Supreme, born in August 1937, son to Joseph and Joanne Crane, was exposed to a strange mineral when he was only a child, giving him powers beyond those of any man, or possibly any superhero. He began his superheroics before even coming to high school and all the way to his adulthood.

Then came meeting the already existing heroes, such as the Immortal, and slowly establishing one of the second generation superhero teams after The Allied Supermen of America from the World War II era, the Guardians of the Globe, which was formed after they teamed up to repel the invasion of the mighty Helspont. After that, the Guardians of the Globe operated around the Earth as its most powerful and effective superhero team, with Supreme considered as their unofficial leader.

Supreme blinked before rubbing his head, such a great rush of information could make even him dizzy.

'Earth. I… I need to get back to Earth,' he thought as his dizziness faded.

Then a realization dawned on him. He had no idea where he was.

Looking around, he tried to get a general sense of where he was. He had plenty of adventures in space before and made sure to memorize the stars and their formations, but looking around he saw nothing around that seemed familiar. It was good luck he didn't actually need air for sustenance otherwise he would have probably suffocated after everything that happened.

Frowning, he activated his Sight Supreme, giving him incredible sight across light-years. He tried looking in several directions, noticing many vibrant colors, nebulas, and an occasional supernova, yet still, nothing seemed familiar.

Then he thought of something. The people that captured him may know where Earth was. He could at least take one of them and interrogate him.

Supreme looked back to see if there were any of his previous pursuers, but even with Sight Supreme, he couldn't find them, showing that he had indeed flown quite a distance. And since he was very disoriented while he was flying, he couldn't retrace his steps so his plan was a no-go.

With no other option, he began flying. In which direction, he wasn't sure, but he made sure to keep a mental map of his current location. Now that he was focused that task was pretty easy.

He flew for some time, his Sight Supreme focused on looking for any familiar formations or any possible space travelers.

As he flew through the endless void, his mind went back to the time just before he left Earth, when he was saying his farewells to his friends.

Supreme stood outside, right on top of the Guardians Headquarters. He was looking up towards the Sun, the wind making his red cape flutter, his white hair bristled.

He was considering it for a while now, and after some thought and debate in his head, he decided to go through with it.

"So you're really going away," a voice behind him said.

Ethan looked back to see all of the other Guardians. The Immortal, War Woman, Red Rush, Aquarus, Martian Man, and Darkwing, people who have been by his side for a long time.

"I am," Ethan answered. "I think it's time for me to go to the stars, maybe broaden my horizons, and find a purpose."

"A purpose?" Immortal said with an arched eyebrow. "You are a protector of Earth, a Guardian of the Globe, for Christ sakes! How can you say you have no purpose?"

Supreme sighed, knowing how Immortal would react. "It's… well… how do I explain it?" he said, struggling to find the proper words. "Ever since I received my powers, I knew that I would use them to protect people, to inspire them, be an ideal for them to strive towards, that it was my duty to guide them to a better tomorrow.

"And yet, as time goes by, I feel like I'm not needed. At least… not anymore."

Every member of the Guardians was shocked to hear that. Here he was, their unofficial leader, one of the greatest superheroes of any era, saying that he wasn't needed in the world. It was simply unbelievable.

"Whoa, whoa, hold up!" Red Rush exclaimed. "What do you mean by that?"

"I'm shocked as well," Martian Man said. "I'm not even from this planet, yet even I feel the need to continue my work on Earth, to protect my new home."

"Supreme, how can you be saying such things?" Aquarus said. "You're the greatest man I've ever known, that any of us has ever known! Your power and heroics are unmatched! How can you say the world doesn't need you?"

War Woman and Darkwing only stared at Supreme, though with different expressions, with War Woman's being softer, and Darkwing's sterner.

"It's just that…" Supreme paused before bringing his hands up and staring at them for a bit. "I thought that I would have to bear the weight of the world, even if… when I found other people who could ease that burden, I would have to be one of the pillars that held the world.

"But after so many years, and after so many superheroes appearing, and taking their part in defending the weak and helpless, I feel like I'm barely holding any weight at all. Like I could just disappear and the world would not change."

The Guardians still looked at him in shock. When Supreme usually gave some sort of speech, it was inspiring, uplifting, supposed to make you feel filled with hope and motivation. This just felt… wrong.

"I'm sorry if what I'm planning seems selfish to you, and I completely understand if you don't agree," Supreme said before looking back at them. "But I feel that this is something I have to do. I just… hope that you understand."

War Woman closed her eyes for a moment before taking off her golden helmet and walking past her teammates and in front of Supreme.

"Listen, Ethan," she said, using his real name. "I cannot judge you. There comes a time when someone questions their place in the world, and even if it took a while for such a thing to have happened for you, you are still a human like everyone else. It is up to you to find it, and nobody else."

Supreme stared at her for a moment, his blue eyes meeting her own. "Holly…"

She put up her hand, signaling that he let her continue. "But know this, if you truly disappeared from this world, everyone would feel it. Your humble nature affects your opinion of yourself, making you think you are less important than you actually are. If you were gone, the world's heart would bear an emptiness that can never be filled.

"Don't be mistaken, this isn't me trying to convince you to stay. I'm only telling you how I see things. If you feel that you need to go and have some time to think, then you have my full support."

Red Rush smiled before blitzing over to Supreme and putting a hand on his shoulder. "You know what, big guy? I understand that you need this. You have my support as well."

Aquarus and Martian Man looked at each other and smiled before walking over to their friend, telling him that they would support his decision too. Immortal, while more reluctant than the others, also accepted this decision.

Darkwing stood, his arms crossed as he looked at the rest of the Guardians. Red Rush looked at him with a frown before zipping over to him.

"Hey, mister Dark and Broody," Red Rush said while rapidly poking his teammate in the shoulder, much to the ladder's annoyance. "We all had our say, now it's your turn."

Darkwing saw his teammates look at him as if they were also expecting him to say something.

The dark-clad hero gave a small sigh. "I have dedicated all my life to the prevention of crime, so I can't say that I completely understand why you would want to stop," Darkwing said. "But I won't stop you. Your decision is your own."

Supreme gave his friend a smile, one that Darkwing just couldn't help but return as well.

"My friends," Supreme said. "You have no idea how much this means to me. You are far more than I deserve."

"Okay, okay, no need to get sappy with us," Red Rush jested.

Aquarus gave the speedster a slight push on the shoulder. "Oh, you be quiet."

"And don't you worry, I won't be gone forever," Supreme said. "Earth is still my home, and I definitely plan to return."

"Well, when you do, you owe me a race," Red Rush said.

Supreme chuckled. "Of course."

"You know, with you gone we will need a replacement," Immortal said. "And you are pretty much one of the irreplaceable ones."

"It's not all about statistics, Immortal," Supreme said. "And think of it as giving someone else a shot."

War Woman gave Supreme a kiss on the cheek. "I hope you won't be gone for too long."

Supreme smiled at her as he softly touched the place where she kissed him. "Hopefully, I won't," he said before slowly lifting himself off the ground with his power of flight. "Until later, my friends! May fortune favor you all!"

And with that, he flew up, with the Guardians waving at him and saying their goodbyes. Supreme flew through the clouds, ready to make his journey across the cosmos. He had to admit he would miss the feeling of Earth's wind on his face, as he can speak from experience that other planets didn't feel the same.

But as he flew he was greeted by yet another person flying close by. He saw that it was Omni-Man, dressed in his usual red and white costume.

Supreme made a stop as Omni-Man flew over to him.

"Nolan," Supreme greeted. "What brings you here? I'm just about to leave, and I'm pretty sure I've already said goodbye to you and your family."

"Yes, I know that," Omni-Man said as he crossed his arms. "But I still wanted to be certain. Is this journey something you really want?"

"Yes, it is," Supreme answered. "The world will manage fine without me. They have plenty of other heroes to protect it, The Guardians of the Globe, many other superhero teams, my sister Suprema, and even you."

"I'm glad you hold me in such a high regard," Omni-Man said. "But I've only been on this planet for a decade, and you've been superheroing for far longer than I did. I don't think I deserve such trust."

"Nolan," Supreme said as he put a hand on Omni-Man's shoulder. "In these ten years, you've more than proven yourself to be a real hero, a true protector of the Earth. You are a hero as much as I am, and I trust you."

Omni-Man smiled and extended his hand. "I'm grateful to hear you say that," he said as the two shook hands. "But you know that Mark is probably going to miss you the most. Ethan Crane is the artist on Séance Dog after all."

"I'm not the only artist at Dazzle Comics," Supreme said. "There are plenty more who can take over after me as the series goes on."

"True, but none are as talented as you," Omni-Man retorted. "Trust me, my Mark has an eye for quality, and every other artist will seem subpar."

Supreme shook his head with a smile. "Then I suppose he will just have to wait a little while. Besides, a different art is needed to change the feeling every now and then," he said before flying slowly upwards. "Goodbye, Nolan! Keep this planet safe for me, and tell Debbie and Mark I said 'hi'!"

"Goodbye, Ethan!"

Supreme nodded and sped off upwards, breaking the sound barrier easily and soon finding himself. His journey has begun.

Supreme was snapped out of his trip down memory lane as his eyes saw a single spaceship moving a light-year away from him. He smiled and flew over to ask for some directions.

Invincible just couldn't believe what was happening. He had a nasty break-up with his girlfriend, Amber, and when he went to his friend Eve for help, he saw his father fighting some giant monster and seemed to have great trouble with it.

Mark wasted no time in going to help his father fight the monster, but then out of nowhere the Immortal appeared and began attacking Omni-Man, forcing Invincible to take out the tentacled creature by himself.

Then he saw his father slice the Immortal in half, making his body fall on the floor spraying blood. His father then told him that he lied, that Viltrumites were a conquering race, and that he killed the Guardians of the Globe to weaken the Earth so they can take over.

Mark refused, which made Omni-Man fight him. And Mark was currently getting the greatest beating he had ever endured.

Cecil cursed under his breath as he looked at what was going on. Omni-Man delivered another punch to Invincible's face, making spray blood and fly across a greater distance.

The entire fight was observed from the base of the Global Defense Agency, with Debbie also there, looking in shock as she saw her husband pummeling their son.

"Sir, our sensors have detected an object moving towards Earth from outer space," a woman overlooking one of the monitors said as it began beeping.

Cecil grumbled. "For God's sake can't we catch a break?" he said, not wanting to deal with any other potential threat. But he still had a job to do. "Do we have a visual?"

The woman shook her head. "No, sir. The object is moving too fast for our satellites to get a clear picture. But the calculated trajectory does make it seem as if it's headed to the general location where Invincible and Omni-Man currently are."

Invincible was slammed into the ground, creating shockwaves that could be felt in a several-mile radius. Omni-Man flew down, his bloody fists clenched.

"Why did you make me do this?!" Omni-Man exclaimed as he punched his son into the gut, making him gasp and spit blood. "Why are you so insistent on defending these humans?! They are nothing without us!" Omni-Man then continued striking Invincible in the areas such as his head and chest, each punch emitting a shockwave. "Nothing but ants that we can squash! We'll be here long after they are gone!"

Just as Omni-Man was about to deliver another punch, he suddenly found out that he couldn't as he felt his arm being held in a vice grip. Turning his head around, his eyes widened as they landed on the visage of an angry Supreme.

Supreme wasted no time and used his hold on Omni-Man's arm to throw the man away from Invincible, but Omni-Man didn't go far as he stopped himself with his power of flight.

The white-haired hero looked at the downed Invincible, who seemed to be barely alive. Supreme immediately took on a worried expression as, despite the fact that the young hero's face was somewhat mangled, he recognized him as Mark Grayson.

"Dear God," Supreme muttered before turning back to Omni-Man, who looked shocked to see that Supreme has returned. "Nolan... what have you done?"

AN: And that's the second chapter. Supreme has returned to Earth right at the end of the now-iconic fight in the Invincible series. So if any of you thought that Omni-Man at least deserved some sort of beating after what has happened, then you better wait for the next chapter because that one will be a whole lot of action. I hoped you liked how I characterized the Guardians and their interactions. And before you ask where the Green Ghost is, well from what I've seen she seems to be the youngest of the Guardians so in my story, she got a spot on the team after Supreme left.

I implore you to check out my other stories, they are worth your time. And leave a comment so I know what exactly you think, and they can be pretty motivating.

See you next time!
