For The World

Supreme watched as Invincible was quickly brought to the operating room, with Cecil standing beside him. The hero still had a hard time believing that this was the young boy he knew from before and in such a horrid state as well.

He remembered Mark as a child, always playing around, asking him if he could make some Séance Dog drawings just for him, or that he and Nolan pick him up to fly.

Debbie quickly ran over and looked through the glass that showed what was happening in the room, with the doctors gathering around Invincible.

She turned to Cecil. "Please, tell me he will be alright."

"He will, Debbie. I promise," Cecil said as he put a hand on her shoulder. "We are better prepared this time, and the damage he sustained is big, but if he could recover from what Battle Beast dealt then he can recover from this. Your son will make a speedy recovery."

"Oh, thank god," Debbie said as a huge weight seemed to fall off her chest, making let out a huge breath she was holding in. She didn't want to see her son in a critical condition again, especially not so soon after the first time.

Debbie then turned to the white-haired hero. "Ethan? So you're finally back," she said, her mouth once again forming into a smile.

"I'm here, Debbie," Supreme said, returning the smile.

"Thank you for helping my son," Debbie said, her eyes slowly tearing up. "I don't think I could have watched what was happening anymore."

Supreme sighed. "I only wish I had-"

"Look, I'm sorry if I have to cut this reunion short," Cecil interrupted getting an annoyed look from Ethan. "Call me an asshole later if you wish, but you need to come with me, Supreme. I need to debrief you on the situation." Cecil then turned to Debbie. "Look, I don't want to cause any more worry, but with the way things are now, we will need Ethan as quickly as we can."

Debbie wiped her tears and nodded. "I understand, Cecil."

"I'm glad, Debbie," he said. "Now come with me, Supreme."

The two then began to walk away, with Supreme giving one last glance at Debbie who looked into the operating room where Invincible was.

The two then passed to another hallway before Cecil began speaking.

"Listen, I'm sorry that I already bother you with all this, but you need to know in just how big of a mess we are," Cecil said as the two walked side by side.

"Yes, Nolan is gone and he told me he killed the Guardians of the Globe," Supreme said.

Cecil let out a dry chuckle. "I wish that was the only thing but there is more. Right now, you are probably the only one of the top superheroes from before."

That made Supreme flinch a little. "What do you mean, Cecil? What about Captain Dynamo?"

"Dead. He was killed a little while ago, by a poison of some kind."

"But… where's Suprema? Where is my sister?"

"Gone."

That actually made Supreme stop before he grabbed Cecil by the shoulder. "What do you mean gone?!"

"I mean that she disappeared!" Cecil answered. "Around five years ago, she for some reason stopped showing up. We tried contacting her, even using the special frequency that both of you can hear, but she never responded."

"Oh, God." Supreme put a hand on his face, not believing what he was hearing. "Wait, what about Kid Supreme?"

"Yeah, well, that's where I was leading you," Cecil said before resuming the walk with Supreme in two. The two stopped in front of one of the doors, with no windows to show what was in the room. Cecil typed a password on the keyboard near the door and it slid open.

Supreme looked inside and his eyes widened. Inside, laying on the bed and dressed in a hospital gown, was a young boy, seemingly in his late teens, muscularly built and with long wavy black hair. He lay with his eyes closed and completely unmoving, the only sound inside coming from the heart monitor.

"Danny!" Supreme exclaimed as he quickly found himself at the teen's side, he quickly looked over him with his Sight Supreme to determine his condition but didn't find any huge physical damage. "What happened to him, Cecil?"

Cecil put a hand in his pocket. "Do you remember your old enemy, Khrome?"

Supreme's eyes widened. "Don't tell me-"

"No, he is still dead," Cecil interrupted. "But as it turns out, the bastard had a son, who wasn't too happy to hear that his father was buried six feet under. Two years after you left, Khrome II showed up to conquer Earth and challenge you personally, but of course, you weren't there. The Guardians were able to stop him, but unfortunately during the battle, Kid Supreme took the full front of Khrome II's rage, finding him the best substitute for you. Suprema stopped Khrome before he could deliver the final blow, but Kid Supreme has been in a coma since. We weren't able to wake him up."

Supreme just stood there with his mouth slightly open and then once again turned his gaze to the unconscious Danny. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. How on Earth could all of it have gotten so wrong? His friends and allies were dead, Omni-Man betrayed the people he had sworn to protect and left Earth, his sister had disappeared, and Danny was in a coma.

And all of that happened because he wasn't here to stop it.

Ethan put his hands on the sides of his head, feeling like he is going to have a mother of all headaches because of all the information he had learned. It was too much even for his own mind. He never should have left. He never should have been so selfish and gone into space. He left it all behind to find himself, and look at what happened.

Cecil walked up and put a hand on Supreme's shoulder. "Look, I know this is a lot to take in, but the world needs you right now. They need to see their greatest protector has returned. They need The Man of Majesty."

Supreme slowly put his hands down and took a deep breath, a new look of determination on his face. "Very well, Cecil. After what has happened, that's the very least I can do."

Cecil smiled. "Good. And there is one thing I need to ask," he said. "Where exactly have you been, and what made you come back."

"I… Well, I…" Supreme stammered, trying to remember what exactly happened but his mind was cloudy. "I don't remember."

That response surprised Cecil. "You don't remember?"

"No, I don't. You see, I woke up in some sort of prison, but who kept me prisoner I'm not sure. I was able to hear that they were using some sort of drugs to keep me inactive, and I had amnesia for a little while before everything came back to me, but everything else after I left for space is still blurry. It seems that the effects of those drugs still didn't wear off, since my more recent memories are still completely blocked.

"When I made my escape, they tried to restrain me, they were pretty strong but I managed to give them the slip. However, I flew very far and even I couldn't tell for how long. When I completely came to, I was already far away from whatever planet that was, and I couldn't retrace my steps. I don't know who captured me and why."

Cecil grumbled under his breath. "I'm really starting to hate mysteries. So, someone was able to capture you, but you still escaped, and we have no idea who. Well, whoever they are, let's hope they don't come after you any time soon.

"Still, you better get your Ass Supreme back into gear and get out there. The people need you."

Supreme nodded and with a burst of Speed Supreme, he disappeared, leaving only a slight breeze in his tracks that ruffled Cecil's hair.

Cecil then returned to his duties, knowing that in the next couple of days people will make an uproar across the entire world, with their greatest hero betraying them, and their previous greatest hero returning.

Mark slowly woke up with a groan, his vision blurry from all the bright lights in his room. Once his vision was clear, he looked around to see a familiar sight of a white hospital room.

He sighed. So he was back here again. And this time it wasn't by some supervillain, but by his own father. Mark honestly thought that was some cruel joke that the universe was playing on him.

"Mark!"

Mark then turned to see his mother quickly running up to his bedside and wrapping him in a hug, one which he gladly returned.

"I'm so glad to see you awake," she said as she hugged her boy.

"I'm happy to see you too, mom," Mark said before they broke the hug. "I… guess what happened wasn't a dream."

His mother's look dropped, making him regret saying that. "No, it wasn't. I wish it was but…" Debbie then shook her head before smiling at her son. "But it's over. And you're alright. That's all that matters."

"I hope I'm not intruding."

Another voice was heard coming from the entrance to the room, and the two of them saw a white-haired man with rounded glasses on his face. He was dressed in a brown coat over a white shirt, blue jeans, and black shoes.

Mark blinked as he recognized the man from his childhood. "Wait. Ethan? Uncle Ethan? Is that really you?"

The man smiled. "Yes, it is, Mark. I'm glad you remember me. And I'm even more glad to see you are okay," Ethan said as he walked up to Mark and also gave him a hug. "Look at you. You're pretty much a man in your own right."

"Oh, uh, thanks for that," Mark said but then remembered something. "Wait, you were also there, weren't you? When I… I fought my dad?"

"Yes, I was there," Ethan said. "I'm truly sorry about what happened. If only I arrived sooner."

"Don't sweat it, uncle Ethan," Mark said with a smile. "I'm just glad you're here after all this time. And thanks for helping me against my dad."

Ethan gave him a small nod before putting up his arm, showing that he was carrying a shopping bag. "Well, this isn't much of a gift, but it's something," he said before pulling out two issues of the Séance Dog comic, making Mark's eyes go wide. "I was going to the comic shop to buy them, and they told me that Séance Dog was one of the titles that this month came out on a weekly basis. And since you missed them out these two weeks I thought I'd have you caught up."

Mark gladly took the comics and examined them. "Thanks! This is more than enough," he said.

Debbie smiled as she saw the two interact. It brought back old memories from before when Ethan would visit their house and how Mark would be very happy when he did.

Mark then blinked as he realized something. "Wait a minute. I've been out for two weeks."

"Yeah, your injuries needed some proper time to heal," Ethan answered. "But you're awake now, and you'll soon be out. That's all that matters."

"Yeah, I suppose."

Debbie then checked her phone and turned to her long-time friend. "Ethan, it's almost half past noon."

"Oh, right," Ethan said. "I'd better get going. It was nice to see you again, Mark. Have a good reading."

"Going where?" Mark asked before Debbie walked up to him and showed him her phone. It displayed a news broadcast, where the President was standing at a podium in front of the Guardians of the Globe memorial, with many camera flashes on him.

"We have all suffered a great loss these past two weeks, and a betrayal like no other," the President said. "Omni-Man, one of the greatest heroes in history has betrayed us, destroyed one of our cities, and killed many, many people. The damage was so big, we still aren't certain of its true extent.

"But there is a bright spot in all of this. The day when Omni-Man betrayed us, a miracle happened. One of our greatest heroes, greater than Omni-Man himself has returned to us! For the past two weeks, he has been helping the people who suffered Omni-Man's attack, and the one who chased Omni-Man away from our planet!"

As he spoke they showed images of Supreme helping people get out of the rubble as well as fighting some villains like the Elephant or the Lizard League.

"And now, he is here to address you all."

"Uncle Ethan, that's-" Mark looked up only to see that Ethan was long gone.

"And now, my good people. I give you… SUPREME!"

Supreme, back in his costume, slowly descended down from the sky near the podium, with the crowd cheering as he landed. The camera flashes intensified as he gave the people a wave before shaking the President's hand and standing at the podium.

"People of the world, as many of you may remember, for decades I've been defending this world, my world, from many threats. But ten years ago, I left the planet. Many may not be aware of the reason, but I thought that the world didn't need me. There were many superheroes, crimes were stopped by the time I even heard of them, crises were averted before I could even come to solve them. It made me feel like I was unnecessary, that the new age of heroes had everything sorted out, so I left the planet so I could probably find a different purpose."

Supreme then closed his eyes and slightly hung his head. "But only after coming back did I realize that the world is not that simple, it's unpredictable, and anything could happen. After hearing about how my friends have been killed, how many other superheroes were out of commission, only then did I realize how bad of a mistake I made."

His head then rose, his eyes filled with determination. "But now I'm back, and I'm not going anywhere anymore! This planet is my home, and I'm not turning my back on it! People of the world, I may have failed you before, but no more! Omni-Man may have broken your trust, but I will do my best to compensate! I will stay right here, and defend the world we all call home!"

Mark and Debbie smiled as they listened to the speech, beginning to actually feel hope despite the situation.

"I will defend the legacy that the Guardians of the Globe left, I will fight for the better future that we all deserve! I, Supreme, give you all my word!"

The crowd cheered again, even louder than before as Supreme thanked everyone for their attention. He then moved away from the podium, crouching down and then flying upwards at great speed.

He was going to make sure to keep his promise no matter what. He was the Earth's protector, and he will protect it as long as he drew breath.
