Hey guys! Sorry I've been lagging so much on updating. We've had a terrible heat wave here in California and it's been miserable. I live coastal, 15 minutes from the beach maybe and we do not have AC. So it's been about 90 degrees in my home. Writing was literally the last thing I wanted to do. It's slowly cooling down, so I decided to finish this one up. It's short but hopefully a good ending to this story. Enjoy!
Chapter 19
Epilogue
Three Months Later
The air is cool and crisp and Dylan drinks it in. Fall around the bend. A light gust of air shakes the branches of the old sycamore tree, bringing with it the faint smell of fires from chimneys, of dusty dirt road. He listens, savoring the silence, savoring the absence of camera flashes and chaos. The media craze that descended after that night at the Bridgestone has finally died off. The photo Marshall released did damage, but it meant nothing, not when Brandon sent the texts between Marshall and Jasper to the tabloids, and Kelly stood beside Dylan at a press conference, admitting to her part in the scandal.
If anyone lost their reputation that night it was Marshall.
Journal in hand, Dylan sits on the front porch steps, scanning the horizon for the glow of headlights. Erica is coming over to pick a new tune. As always, the music is her way of rebuilding.
Days after Brenda was released from the hospital, Dylan put pen to paper. It was how he dealt with his grief, his anger at what he and Brenda had endured. He filled page after page of his notebook with songs telling his and Brenda's story.
Brenda has rebuilt too. She was adamant they stay in their home, no matter how much blood was spilled there. She's getting stronger, healthier every day. And though her memory has returned for the most part, there are still holes here and there but she's content. She will take it as it comes, and Dylan will be beside her every step of the way.
The clatter of the screen door has him smiling. Familiar, light footsteps. He twists around to see Brenda coming to join him. Joy lights him up inside. He'll never stop loving the sight of her. Never stop being grateful that Brenda graces his life, when he thought she was lost to him forever.
Sitting beside him, Brenda slides an arm around his waist.
"Hey, country boy."
He kisses her temple, burying his face in her long, dark hair.
"Hey, yourself." She knocks her shoulders to his, her scent surrounding him in a swirl of magnolia and honeysuckle.
"Whatcha working on?" He shifts, setting his journal aside so he can wrap an arm around her. "A new song."
Brenda peers up at his face. Her blue grey eyes gleam.
"For the album?" Dylan nods. A snap of excitement hits him hard.
For the last month Erica and David have been immersed in the chaos of a new record and everything that comes with it: recordings, interviews, photoshoots, and soon, a tour. He is so excited for his sister and best friend, it's all happening for them. He loves being apart of it.
She hugs him to her. "I can't wait to hear it."
He can't help but feel a pang of sorrow. Even now, months after her attack, Brenda's voice is still a soft rasp. But she's tough and Dylan knows she wouldn't want his sympathy for a damn second. It's why she survived everything she has to be the person she is today.
For a heartbeat, Dylan's silent as he relishes this perfect moment in time. If he never gets another moment, this is it. Brenda and him and their life together. He's nothing short of thankful for this second chance.
Brenda's soft-serious voice floats through the night. "What are you thinking about?"
He clutches her closer. "Thinking that I love you," he says, sweeping his lips across hers. "Thinking that I don't know where I'd be without you."
"Mmm." Brenda smiles. "You'd be here. On this porch. Writing these songs. Speaking of which . . ."
She leans in to nip at his throat. "I better leave you to it. I don't want to distract you."
Though her eyes are solemn, her smile is teasing. Dylan gives her a wolfish grin.
"I think I might allow for a distraction, baby. And a mighty fine one at that."
A look of innocence. A raise of her eyebrows. "I mean, I don't want to interfere with your work, but I do think the distraction could be worth it."
"Oh you do, do you?"
Brenda laughs as Dylan hauls her against his chest. They tangle heartbeats, tangle bodies, tangle breaths. She kisses him again, winding her arms around his neck.
"How is the script?" He asks breathlessly when they finally come up for air.
It took Brenda one week to find a new agent. This time it's a woman named Suzanna Hastings. She is fiery, bossy, fierce and Brenda loves her! She has set up an audition already for a play in Nashville. It was important for Brenda to start small. Suzanna gets it.
"It's okay…but I think I'm going to wait a little longer."
Dylan pulls back, concern written over his handsome face. "Why?"
Brenda smiles, she rests her forehead against his. She closes her eyes. Against his lips, she whispers, "I want to try for a baby again, Dylan."
He pulls back, his breath, his heart stalling. But his lips kick up at the corners. "Are you sure?" "So sure."
Dylan lets out a bright burst of joyful laughter, then sweeps the woman he loves into his arms.
Brenda laughs out loud, "What are you doing?" She giggles.
"We're going to make a baby." He says excitedly as he carries Brenda up the stairs and, stepping through the threshold of their warm home.
"What about Brandon and Erica? Aren't they coming over?"
Dylan shushes her with his lips on hers, his tongue moves effortlessly around hers in a slow yet feral passionate kiss.
"They can wait. God knows they made us wait at dinner the other night."
Brenda laughs, knowing that was true. Brandon and Erica invited them to dinner, only for them to show up thirty minutes late, with broad smiles and freshly fucked hair.
It doesn't take long for clothes to disappear between them. As Dylan lays over her he takes her beautiful face in between his hands.
He just stares at her, he has never felt a connection like this, not with anyone. She's the only girl that has made Dylan feel things deeply. The only girl that no matter their differences, just got him. She was also the only girl that really truly wanted to know him, all of him, all the rough edges, demons, insecurities. And even with Brenda's memory loss that hadn't changed. Dylan inhales her scent, and continues to look at her face, committing it to memory.
She smiles at him, like she knows exactly what he's thinking. He slips inside her effortlessly not needing time to warm up. His lips attach to hers in a slow delicious kiss. Dylan brings his lips to her ear and whispers, "God I love you." He breathes.
Brenda tightens her arms around his neck, "I love you too." She whispers back.
A whimper tumbles from Brenda, her core clenching as he pulls out, running the tip over her glistening folds one more time before surging forward again.
Brenda's breath returned on a strangled cry as he rocked into her, disappearing inside her body until he fills her completely.
Their heads lifted, eyes locking and hearts beating in sync as the room pulses with the charge of emotion traveling between them.
Brenda wraps her arms around his neck and folds her body around his as he takes hold of her face once again and starts pumping his hips, claiming her lips in a feverish kiss that steals away any sense of reason.
Clashing teeth and lips, clammy skin, grasping hands, breathless pants; they were nothing but a mess of lust and raw feelings as Dylan thrusts into her and they work together to reach a climax that leaves them both shuddering, sweaty and panting for breath.
Dylan moves to his back, taking Brenda with him. Heart pounding and body spent, Brenda clings to Dylan's neck with her head draped over his shoulder and face buried in the soft strands of his brown hair, inhaling him like a junkie.
"Feel pregnant yet?" Dylan chuckles finally interrupting the silent bliss that surrounds them.
Brenda laughs, "Maybe…but maybe we should do it one more time to make sure." She jokes.
Dylan laughs louder, "Gimme 10 minutes." He said before kissing her face. He gently touches her wrist, bringing their tattoos side by side. His thumb caressing the words.
All the roads, lead to us.
It had been a hell of a road to get back to each other. Maybe they made a baby tonight, maybe it would be tomorrow or next week or six months from now. That road was unknown to them. But Brenda and Dylan knew that any road that came about, they'd happily walk.
Together.
Always together.
The End
I hope you all enjoyed remember me and this ending. Hit review and let me know! I have an adorable chapter planned for Last Night in London, remember that one?
