Chapter 20: Wildflowers in the Wind

"Come on Pru!" Nathaniel declared from the doorway of Martin's bedroom. His foot tapping against the floorboards at the same pace as his palm against the door frame. It was just past three in the afternoon and it had not only been an extremely hot day but grueling as well. The day before their lazy bones had done nothing but eat, drink and be merry, leaving quite a bit of work around the farm for them all to complete just after waking this morning. Though now, with almost every single chore done and the sun blazing down upon them, they were all intent to swim at the lake. Though it seemed to Nathaniel that Pru was taking her sweet time finishing up the final hurdle between them and the feel of cool crisp water refreshing their weary bodies.

Pru snapped her head back at her brother, glaring at him, "You do have hands brother. You could be helping me finish with the bedding. Instead of staring at me impatiently!" She spat back at him.

Nathaniel rolled his eyes at her, though quickly entered the room and began helping to finish making up the bed with fresh linens. A tuck here and a fold there and the task was completed. He exaggeratedly smoothed the blankets on top and gave them an obnoxious pat. Then with his eyebrows raised in jest, his sister said, "Now let's go."

Despite wanting to appear annoyed at him, Pru giggled and quickly tore past him through the bedroom doorway, down the dimly lit hall and out the cabin's wide open front door. Where she came to an abrupt halt hearing her father's voice.

"Not you," he calmly spoke from the rocking chair he was swaying back and forth in, his rifle splayed across his lap half dismantled.

"Huh?" Pru questioned as Nathaniel came crashing into her back, knocking her several steps forward before grabbing ahold of her arms steadying her.

"I said...not you," Chingachgook calmly repeated.

"What? Why?" Nathaniel asked in an exasperated tone before Pru even had the chance to respond.

Chingachgook slowly raised his head away from his task and peered over at his two oldest children. The piercing blue of their eyes, inquisitively boring into him. Why? It was a fair question, one which he had no answer to. And so said the only thing that made logical sense. "Pru has chores inside the cabin today."

"They're finished," She said with a wide toothy smile.

"Nothing was completed yesterday. I am certain that they are not," Chingachgook said, eyeing her intently. While his face remained calm and impassive, his eyes shone a different gleam. Pru's smile slowly faded. The strange look in his eye was not one she had ever seen before and immediately she tore through her mind desperate to isolate whatever indiscretion she could have done that could have possibly upset him.

While this look may have been foreign to Pru, Nathaniel knew it well, being the little devil that he often was as a young child. Though what he could not identify was what Pru could have possibly done in the span of the morning and afternoon to garner such a response from him. He had seemed a bit out of sorts since they all awoke in the glade that morning, but he had assumed that their father was simply weary from all of the endless travel he had been enduring over the past six months and did not question it any further. Though Chingachgook's manner now suggested something deeper and Nathaniel quickly found himself draping his arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer towards him. "I just helped her with the last chore. She's done," Nathaniel said, eyes slightly narrowed at his father in question as to where this was coming from.

Chingachgook shifted his gaze between them, silently contemplating his thoughts. Then shifted his eyes out into the glade where the other three stood restlessly waiting. Each of them staring wide eyed up at him in question. Chingachgook's eyes lingered on Martin for the briefest of moments before turning his attention back to Nathaniel. "You'll be there?"

Nathaniel chuckled despite his furrowed brows, wondering exactly what type of question that was. "Yes...we all will be."

"Alright. Go. But be back for supper," Chingachgook softly stated. His usual calm demeanor returned and he went back to cleaning his rifle.

"Yes father." Brother and sister said in unison.

Nathaniel placed his palms on Pru's shoulders and gently ushered her forward. Each step forced her to crane her neck just a little bit more as her eyes continued to stay locked on their father. "Face forward and move," Nathaniel whispered into her ear.

Pru nodded her head and swiveled it towards the glade, Martin's eyes already upon her and before she knew it she was smiling again.

Uncas stepped forward, gripped onto Pru's hand and lightly whispered, "What was that all about?"

Pru shrugged her shoulders, "What was that all about?"

"Leave it," Nathaniel said from behind them. Then smacked Martin and Jack both across the chests and said, "Race ya!"

And just like that, Martin, Jack and Nathaniel took off at a breakneck pace down the path towards the lake. Martin quickly twisting his head backwards giving Pru an adorable wink, before overtaking the other two. Pru giggled to herself watching him as he sped past them. His shaggy blonde hair whipping around like a wild horse's mane. It was the first time all day that he had acted free. The first time all day that he was unguarded with his affections, no matter how small. And suddenly she stopped, just as she and Uncas were about to cross the tree line onto the lake's winding path. A light breeze blows at her from behind, her long loose locks blowing over both her shoulders as if beckoning her turn towards it. She sucked in a breath and swiveled her head back towards the cabin. Back towards her father, where all she saw was the rocking chair swaying empty on the porch. She gazed at the open cabin door, waiting and watching. Though for what, she did not know.

Uncas squeezed her hand in his and gently placed his left palm on her forearm. "Are you alright?"

Pru turned her head back to face him. A soft reassuring smile creeping across her lips. "Mmmhmm," she mumbled and nodded her head for good measure, in an effort to swallow down the uneasy feeling that had begun brewing in the pit of her stomach.

"Good! Now let's go catch up to those heathens!" Uncas exclaimed and swiftly began yanking her forward.

Chingachgook crossed through the cabin's doorway, meandering this way and that throughout the sweltering cabin opening window after window as he carefully inspected every single one of Pru's chores to be certain they had been completed properly. As he was unable to shake his lingering desire for her to have stayed behind with him. He weaved in and out of bedrooms, opening and closing each bedroom door until he arrived at Martin's bedroom or Pru's depending on the season. He strode in, his eyes drifting between each well dusted piece of furniture then along the perfectly made bed to the small pile of neatly folded laundry that rested just beside the pillows. The pile is a tiny mishmash of both Martin and Pru's clothing, his and hers intermingled sporadically throughout. Chingachgook sighed, sat down on the bed and placed his dark weathered palm atop the pile, lightly strumming his thumb and forefinger along the seam of one of Pru's flowered skirts. Then gently lifted the fabric as he peered down just below it to Martin's dark green linen shirt. A heavy sigh escaping his lips.

Years of observing their behavior had made the sight of them curled up next to each other in the grass much less shocking than he would have thought. Though not less upsetting. He had chosen for the better part of three years to blatantly ignore every smile, every eye twinkle, every laugh and every loving gesture both small and large that he had seen shared between them, all to convince himself that it was not happening. That the blooming love that had swelled between them was not actually happening. It had been nothing when Chaska sought him out to court Pru as he knew, without needing to be told, that she had no affection for him beyond friendship. And while it hurt him to think of Chaska's sadness, it was also relieving. Then Jack's decision to return with them to the cabin, no doubt influenced by the presence of a certain dark haired daughter. The boy had become instantly taken with her, always trying to be near her or talk to her. Desperate to share every moment possible with her. Chingachgook chuckled to himself at Jack's lovesick gift of droopy wildflower that sat wilting atop the supper table. He could just picture Pru's sweet face and gracious acceptance of them, while his sons laughed mercilessly in the background. Whilst Pru was always polite, it was extremely clear to him and everyone else, other than Jack, that she was uninterested in his advances. Though not Martin. Martin was a different animal altogether. Matin she silently adored, even loved and Chingachgook knew it. He knew it all the way deep into his bones and that silent and pure love terrified him. He was not ready for it, not ready to let go of a daughter that only just came into his life three short years ago. Not ready for her to be absent on a daily basis from his life. Then as thoughts of his emptiness swarmed his mind, so did his tears stream unguarded down his cheeks.

Chingachgook removed his hand from atop the neatly folded laundry and slowly hunched forward. His waiting palms cradling his dangling head as he sighed deeply to himself. "Great Spirit…what am I to do?" He softly murmured into his palms as he patiently waited for a sign, any sign of guidance. Though sadly, there was none and once more silently thought, What am I to do without my Little Warrior?

"Come on! Hurry up, you two!" Nathaniel shouted from the top of the waterfall as Uncas and Pru finally materialized from trees. "We are waiting for you!" He added annoyingly.

Pru released Uncas's hand and watched as he charged forward, immediately tearing off his shirt and tossing it aimlessly to the ground. Then quickly began scaling the rock cover earth that led up to the waterfall drop off. The heat was sweltering and she could feel the sopping wetness that was pooling along her hairline and under her arms, as well as an unflattering stream of sweat running down between both of her heavily covered thighs. It was cruel that society forced her to wear such heavy fabric when the boys could practically strip naked and no one considered that slightest bit improper. Pru grazed her cheeks with her palms, wiping the sweat from the small corners of her face and with Nathaniel's irritated voice still ringing in her ear, reached behind her back and began tugging furiously at the messy knot she had made in her skirt. "Ugh!" She whispered and pinched her eyes tightly shut in concentration as she continued to twist and yank at the horribly tangled string.

"Pru! Come on!" Nathaniel shouted down once more.

Pru flung her eyes open and yelled, "Just jump without me!"

"No," Martin whispered into her ear, startling her with his sweet drawl and gently he moved her fingers aside from the knot. "I don't do anything without you anymore." He added and leaned down kissing the nape of her neck while he carefully began kneading at the knot with his fingertips. Pru took a deep breath, swallowing down the hot sticky air and laid her head back against his bare shoulder as she peered up at the blazing sun. Its luminous rays bearing down atop the lake's blueish green water, dancing gingerly atop its lightly rippling waves and making it look like a thousand twinkling stars in the night sky.

"Beautiful," she whispered.

"Yes…you are," Martin breathed behind her.

Pru giggled, lifted her head and said, "I was speaking about the lake and the way the sun hits it."

"I wasn't," Martin said as he was finally able to loosen the tangled knot and her skirt billowed elegantly down to the dirt.

Pru turned first her head, then her whole body towards him, watching as he dropped into a squat in front of her. His bare chest glistens with sweat as he scooped up her shift in his palms and tied it into a tight knot just between her knees. Just as she always did when she swam with them. Martin dragged his fingertips up her clothed thigh and gripped onto her hips as he pulled himself up to his feet. "I'd really like to take this off of you too, but Jack may faint and I am not certain what kind of swimmer he is," he said as he lightly fingered the top portion of her dress.

Pru giggled, wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face in his chest. The feel and smell of him relaxing away any nerves that might have lingered from earlier and then once more the annoyed voice of her brother filled her ears.

"Any time now!"

"Alright!" Martin shouted back at him. Then tilted his head down to Pru and softly said, "Shall we?" He stretched out his arm towards the waterfall. Pro nodded her head and quickly the two began climbing the rough landscape up the side of the waterfall. Pru first and Martin followed at her heels, all the way until they both lightly splashed into the flowing water above.

"Finally," Nathaniel said exasperatedly.

Martin strode over to his friend and smacked him hard across his chest. "Don't you know not to rush a woman!"

"A woman perhaps...but Pru, being my little sister, doesn't really count," Nathaniel chuckled through his smirk, though quickly found his sight obscured by his own dark brown locks as his head swiftly jerked forward. "Ahh!" He yelped and turned his head to the right expecting to see Pru though instead saw Uncas, wide eyed and shaking his head back and forth. "What?" Nathaniel asked as he rubbed the back of his head.

"Do you ever behave?" Uncas mockingly questioned.

"Never!" Nathaniel happily replied, a devilish grin dancing across his lips.

"Are we gonna jump or what?" Jack asked, shifting his weight back and forth, his voice laced with uncertainty and giving it that slight edge that implied it was now or never.

"Nervous?" Nathaniel snickered, eyebrows raised high into his forehead.

"Leave him be, Natty," Pru said, crossing over to Jack and snaking her arm through his. "It's not too far down. I promise."

Jack's eyes shifted between the basin of the waterfall and Pru's hopelessly blue eyes. Her long dark locks falling loosely down her back with the exception of a few unruly strands that were caught in the breeze and tickling his neck and chin. The pink in her cheeks made the blue of her eyes shine even brighter. While he accepted his defeat of the pursuit of her, his heart he was not quite over her just yet and so gaily dipped his head down to hers, pointing over towards Martin with his thumb and softly murmured into her ear, "You certain you're set on him?"

Pru giggled, "I'm certain."

Jack nodded his head in resignation for the second time in two days, shrugged his shoulders and said. "Thought I'd give it one more go."

"I expected no less," Pru said and gave his arm a gentle squeeze before moving between Nathaniel and Martin, who she laced her fingers with.

"Ready?" Martin asked, drawing their joined hands up to his lips and sweeping them lightly across her knuckles.

"Ready," Pru said as she slowly tore her eyes from Martin and gazed over towards her suddenly silent smart mouthed brother. His eyes squinting like a hawk against the sun's bright golden rays and his lips pursed tightly shut. Vanished from his face was his devilish grin and the wickedly mischievous twinkle in his eyes, replaced now with a soft and distant look of loneliness and gently she reached down grasping Nathaniel's palm in hers as she knew that expression on his face all too well.

Nathaniel felt Pru's warm sweaty hand encircle his own and peered down into her knowing eyes. Somehow, some way, she always knew. He squeezed her soft palm in his own, quietly forcing the lightest wisp of a smile along his lips and shifted his eyes back out to the sun. He peered past the lake and the uneven tree tops, out into the vast cloudless blue sky. Bearing witness to Martin and Pru's blooming love had proved occasionally difficult for him. Watching the tenderest acts shared between them brought about a quiet internal pain. A pain that was no more their fault than his own and while he longed to be rid of it, he also could not bear to part with it. Believing that as soon as he released himself from his heartache, he in turn would release himself from her and that was simply not something he was prepared to do just yet or perhaps ever. Nathaniel pinched his eyes shut, blocking the beauty of the day from his vision and said, "It's almost a perfect moment." Then without even realizing what he was doing, grasped onto Uncas's hand, squeezing it tightly within his own. The feel of both of his siblings anchoring him to the here and now.

"Almost," Pru whispered as she dropped her head onto his left shoulder.

Uncas swiveled his body towards his brother, squeezing his hand even tighter around Nathaniel's as he did so. "Don't worry brother. We are always here to stand beside you, in happiness and in grief," Uncas whispered in Mohican. While he knew it was impolite to use a language that Martin only slightly understood and Jack did not at all, he thought it best as his comment was only meant his sibling's ears.

Jack peered around Uncas, eyeing Nathaniel's unusual demeanor, especially since only a moment ago he seemed as wild as ever and asked, "Is everything alright?"

"Yes," Nathaniel quickly answered, flinging his eyes wide open and turning to face his friend. Jack had no idea about Tanda and he was in no mood to regale his tale of woe and so snapped himself from his reverie and loudly bellowed, "Let's jump!"

Uncas turned his head towards Jack and seeing the shaky look in his eyes and quickly grabbed onto his hand as Nathaniel, at the center of them all and with hands still entwined with his siblings, leapt feet first off the top of the waterfall. His tight grasp on the others yanked them toppling past the waterfall's slippery edge, into its flowing current and further down as they broke the water's cool foamy surface.

"Ha!" Nathaniel exclaimed as he resurfaced to the sight of Uncas already bobbing his head up and down in the water.

"Whoa!" Jack roared before even taking his first breath. "That was amazing!"

"I told you...it's not too far of a drop!" Pru giggled as she climbed onto Martin's slick back.

"Well done Jack," Martin said, gripping tighter to Pru's legs around his waist.

"Let's do it again!" Uncas proclaimed and instantly began swimming towards the shore, Nathaniel and Jack following closely at his heels.

Martin swiveled his head to the side, "Want to go again?"

"No. I'm happy right where I am." And releasing her legs from around his waistline, swiveled her body through the water until they could be face to beautiful face. "Hello," she breathed into his face.

"Hello…" Martin whispered as he brushed the tip of his nose against hers. Then bent his head backwards, partially dunking it in the cool water and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling Pru flush against him. Their chests bumping as he made his head level again. The feel of her soft warm body made him tingle all over. It was only yesterday that he first felt the sweetness of her engulfing him and already he wondered how people did not strive for that glorious sensation every moment of the day. "Do you want to pick wildflowers with me?"

"Wildflowers?" Pru questioned, her eyebrows lifted in curiosity.

Martin's lips spread in a wide wicked grin. The sight of which threw Pru into a fit of wild giggles and he said once more in a low soft drawl, "Mmmhmm...wildflowers." Unable to speak even one small word, she merely nodded her head, spun around in the water and dived deep into the lake's crystal depths. Her long thin body gliding just below the surface, further and further away.

Martin swam over to the shore, popping up on the rocks just as the other boys breached the water for the second time. He swiped both sets of their discarded clothes from the ground and casually hollered out to the others as they all three came up for air, "We are going to pick wildflowers." Then, without waiting for a response, swiveled on his heel and began sprinting in the same direction Pru had swam off into only a moment ago.

"Wildflowers?" Jack questioned.

"Yea…wildflowers," Nathaniel mockingly repeated and began playfully shoving Uncas deeper into the depths of the lake.

"Sunlight comes creepin' in

Illuminates our skin

We watch the day go by

Stories of what we did

It made me think of you

Under a million stars

We danced on top of cars

Took pictures of the stage

So far from where we are

They made me think of you

They made me think of you

Oh, lights go down

In the moment, we're lost and found

I just wanna be by your side

If these wings could fly

For the rest of our lives

I'm in a foreign state

My thoughts, they slip away

My words are leavin' me

They caught an aeroplane

Because I though of you

just for the thought of you

Oh, lights go down

In the moment, we're lost and found

I just wanna be by your side

if these wings could fly

Oh, damn these walls

In the moment, we're ten feet tall

And how you told me after it all

We'd remember tonight

For the rest of our lives

If these wings could fly

Oh, lights go down

In the moment we're lost and found

I just wanna be by your side

if these wings could fly

Oh, damn these walls

In the moment, we're ten feet tall

And how you told me after it all

We'd remember tonight

For the rest of our lives"

"Wings" - Birdy

(For all of them in this, almost perfect, moment)

Pru sat nestled between Martin's slightly spread thighs, hunched forward and in deep concentration. The cool water that had once glazed her skin long evaporated and was replaced by the damp stickiness their lovemaking had so beautifully produced as she plucked flower after flower from the garden that was now her lap. Dozens of tiny violets laid skewed across her legs and belly. Vivid shades of plum and periwinkle smiling back up at her as she intricately wove the delicate flowers seamlessly together in pursuit of her desired creation. She could feel Martin's hands as they moved gingerly through her hair. His fingertips gently massaged along her scalp, slow and smooth, before taking small individual pieces of her mane between them and weaving her hair into a loose sloppy sort of braid.

"You know…I have never actually braided hair before. Mine has never been long enough," Martin said, his tongue hanging out of the corner of his mouth in concentration.

"You mean you never sat up at night entwining your fingers in my brother's long locks?" Pru mockingly said with a giggle.

"Ha…ha…ha…," he whispered into her ear, releasing her half finished braid and tickling her sides mercilessly. Pru yelped loudly and began squirming violently in his lap. A wave of purple suddenly took flight into the air as hordes of little blossoms flung this way and that. Their glistening sweat covered bare skin made her slid right off his lap into the dirt beside his legs. "Concede, Pru!" Martin teased as he twisted his fingers lightly underneath her armpits.

"Noooo!" She seethed between gritted teeth and raised her fingers up to his neck, kneading them delicately around his nape.

Martin instantly pressed the side of his face down against her hand, desperately hoping to cease any further assault on him. After years of the two of them torturing each other this way, they knew all too well the other's weak spots and both went right for the kill. "Oh no you don't!" Martin exclaimed and quickly shifted his weight on top of her, lightly pressing her to the ground with his pelvis. Pru giggled loudly and wiggled her hands free of his neck, slowly gliding them down his bare sweaty chest. Delicately tracing every light curve or protruding muscle with her fingertips until she settled her palms on either side of his hips.

"Now…I really am going to need a bath. Since you've gone and laid me down in the dirt...again," she breathed, her hips wiggling unconsciously beneath him.

"You want me to bathe you?" Martin said, leaning further down until their noses were almost touching. His eyes fluttered slow and seductively between open and closed. "I will if you want me too...," he whispered into her mouth just before seizing her lips in his.

A slow, passionate kiss erupted between them, tongues leisurely gliding along each other. A soft moan escaping Pru's lips. The enticing sound encouraged Martin to drift his right palm down her slick chest and between her thighs, where he gently caressed the soft moist folds of her body. His gesture was reciprocated with Pru quickly arching her hips into his palm. He remembered the other day, how breathless and pink cheeked she became when she glided herself along him. The image of her then was so stunningly beautiful that all he desired was to see her face like that once more. Martin slid his left hand under hair and cradled her head in his palm. He could feel her fingertips dig into the skin along his upper arms. The light prick as her nails scratched him made him softly wince. He watched and listened as her lips fell into an O shape and a tantalizing moan filtered into the air. "Maaaartin…," she breathed into his face. Martin squirmed slightly, his own body begging for more. Then suddenly found himself laying on his back with Pru shifting herself atop him.

"Pru…," he whispered. Then groaned as the warmth of her body engulfed him. He trailed his palms all along her thighs, bottom and hips, helping to move her weakened body atop him. Martin knew it would not take him long to succumb to her, just the sight of her beneath him had driven him wild with passion and without even feeling her touch upon his skin. He gazed up at her, their eyes met as their naked bodies pressed tenderly together. He could feel her brace herself on his body. Her palms wrapped tightly around his forearms as she swayed her hips around him. He was spellbound at this moment, watching her like this as she pleasured them both from atop him. Then slowly her face contorted from that of a young innocent girl to that of a woman on the brink of zeal and he gripped tightly to her hips, lifting his bottom up off the earth and deeper inside her. Pru's overcome wail was all he needed to hear to let himself go inside her. That now familiar feeling of euphoria flooded his system and his spent body sagged peacefully back into the ground. Not a moment later Pru fell listlessly atop him. Their sweaty chests pressed together as their limbs laid weak beside them.

Martin gently caressed her head, the sloppy braid he had tried so desperately to create completely disheveled now and embedded with the earth's dirty soil. He raised his head up, kissed the top of her crown and breathed, "I really will bathe you…if you like."

Pru giggled faintly atop his chest and raised her head upward as she traced the line of his jaw with her fingertips. She stared into his eyes, greener now as they always were after they made love and said, "I love you so very deeply and have no wish to ever leave you." She paused as she lightly dragged her thumb across his soft lips, trapped for a moment in his beauty, then added, "It is imperative that we speak with my father. Tonight or perhaps tomorrow morning. The sooner we address us with him…the sooner we are able to truly live."

"We?" Martin questioned with raised eyebrows. "You want to speak to him with me?"

Pru brushed away a singular unruly golden lock from his face and said, "He was different this morning and I don't know why. Neither did Nathaniel."

"Different?" A growing wave of nausea enveloping his insides.

"At first he told me I couldn't go with you all to the lake. Then Natty whipped his tongue a bit and I went. But I don't know why he did not want me to go. Perhaps because Jack was there...I just don't know," she finished with a shrug.

Martin furrowed his brows. He saw the interaction between the three of them, more so then heard it. Chingachgook's already soft voice became even softer in that moment as though he deliberately wanted the conversation quieted from the other's ears. And while Pru made a good point about thinking it being about Jack, there was something in the way Chingachgook looked briefly into his eyes that raised questions in him. It was the briefest of moments but something was definitely there, behind her father's dark brown eyes. Though not wanting to worry Pru anymore then she already was, wrapped his arms around her waist, smiled softly at her and said, "Alright...together then. When would you like to do it?"

"Tomorrow morning," she said then added. "Tomorrow morning everything will be different."

Martin nodded his head in agreement and raised his body into a seated position, nestling her once again in his lap and nuzzled his face into her hair. While silently he fought back the ominous feeling that plagued him more and more with each passing moment. Tomorrow morning, he thought, tomorrow morning it will all be different.

Author's Note: This is very much a transitional chapter, my best effort to prepare you for what is to come next. And boy will it come. It was actually a very long chapter but I thought it best to split it. Chingachgook is clearly on the verge of a break down...though how big is yet to be seen. Chingachgook is one of my favorite original characters and as such I wanted to portray him in as real a way as possible. Parents, after all, aren't perfect. But you'll see more of that in the next chapter.

I also wanted to say that I feel Tanda's lingering presence for Nathaniel to be very real. Just because we lose someone physically does not mean that we ever lose them emotionally. Our loved ones stay with us through our lives, always influencing us from a distance. And while he is happy for Pru and Martin, their shows of affection will occasionally set off his emotions for Tanda. I mean how can they not? It has only been seven months since she died in his arms. And I can tell you...that is emotionally traumatic...no matter what sex you are or what century you live in.
