Hi people, So just a heads up this is a really long chapter but a really important one so if you don't like long chapters then I don't really know what to tell you because this is basically the start of all the drama that's going to come out of this book. Another thing is updating days will vary from Fridays to Saturdays. Either because I'll be busy or because I already have a chapter to publish so if you are keeping up with this story just check on either one of those days. Other than that enjoy.
Working for Alexander Hamilton was more like babysitting than it was an actual job and just like babysitting there was a strict list of mental rules that you did not break under any circumstances because if you did there would be extreme consequences, meaning the child, Alexander would make sure everything would go to hell. That list of rules consisted of patience, understanding, punctuality, and the most important being a mediator. Playing the role of mediator was so important because when you were dealing with a man or more accurately a large child like Alexander you had to be there to stop and break up fights that often occurred when Alexander was dealing with individuals such as Charles Lee who had very conflicting ideas. Ideas that were practically begging to challenge Alexander. Charles was somewhat of a loyalist which in Angelica's opinion pretty fucking stupid for two very obvious reasons. Number one being they lived in New York and second they had almost nothing to do with England. The reason behind Lee's dedication to the British Monarchy probably had something to do with his very close relationship with George King who was an English businessman that the Schuyler Law Firm had a few contracts with. Not that Angelica had any real idea what they were but that didn't mean she was any less suspicious about King and his intentions.
Now today Angelica was breaking multiple rules on her babysitting list. For one she was extremely late. She should be sitting at her desk drinking cheap coffee by 6:30 and the time was getting dangerously close to 8o clock. Angelica didn't know how or what happened but one alarm was ignored and another didn't go off which led her to wake up late and being forced to take the subway because Thomas had an early meeting and Angelica had no other ride. Second, she had lost her patience the minute she stepped onto the subway train and a fellow commuter decided to pack his un-showered body right next to hers even though there were several open seats far away from her. But Angelica couldn't really complain. That was just the price you paid when you traveled on New York City's subway station. And lastly, Angelica didn't know how well she would be able to fulfill her mediator duties. You see being a mediator for anyone was tiring but having to be one for the sake of Alexander Hamilton was beyond exhausting. Out of the three languages, Angelica did know she still wasn't sure if there was a word that could accurately convey just how fatigued she was at the end of each debating round that Alexander was sure to participate in and most likely start.
But like most things in her life, there was more drama and responsibilities for Angelica to deal with. On any regular day, Angelica would've been very stressed, and rightfully so but if you wanted to add insult to injury then it would be helpful to know that the very day everything that could go wrong in Angelica's life did was the same day Benjamin Franklin would be paying everyone at the Schuyler Law firm a visit.
Benjamin Franklin was exactly what you'd expect if Charles Lee, Margarita Schuyler, and Aaron Burr had a love child. Making that child extremely arrogant, self-centered, and overall pain in the ass. Franklin was a political ally to both Angelica's and Alexander's fathers or whatever Washington was to Hamilton. Angelica had heard several rumors that they didn't have the ideal father and son relationship. But that was beside the point. The real problem was how the hell was Angelica going to prevent murder by 8:45
Angelica was currently sitting on the train impatiently tapping her foot on the dirty public floor. Thankfully the odd-smelling commuter that had previously been sitting had left to go to another seat that was closer to the door. Angelica wasn't sure if he did it to be considerate or if he made that decision so it would be easier to hop out of the train and visit the Chinese cuisine shop that she knew was coming up. Based on the manners of this guy she wasn't going to go with the latter. After a few minutes of checking her messages from Dolly, who was keeping her updated on the chaos that was going on in the office, the subway finally stopped. As soon as the train stopped Angelica bolted out of the underground tunnels and into the busy streets of New York City. It took Angelica all of two seconds to fall into the rhythm of the crowded sidewalks. Angelica looked around and saw people with the same goal in mind. GET TO WORK. Everyone had a briefcase, cup of coffee either for them or their bosses, a watch they were constantly checking, and an expression similar to Angelica's. The expression of a working-class adult. Something Angelica was still getting accustomed to. She had maybe been walking for about 15 minutes when her cell started going off like crazy. Not that it was a big deal anyway. The sounds of the city were drowning it out easily. Angelica groaned and dug her hand around her purse in a frantic attempt to answer the phone before it was registered as a missed call and by the grace of God, she found it with .5 seconds to spare.
"Hello?"
"Angelica! Where are you!?"
There was something else to know about Dolly. She was extremely anxious. Always worrying and thinking about what was or could go wrong. She reminded Angelica of Eliza, too distressed for her own good.
"I'm coming. Give me like 5 minutes."
"5 minutes! Angelica, I don't even know if I have 2, he's going crazy!"
"Who is sweetheart? Who's going crazy"
"Both of them. Alexander's climbed over the table twice and Franklin's throwing staples. I don't know what to do!"
Men. No matter how big and mature they claimed to be, they were still boys at heart and boys were loud, sensitive, and immature.
Angelica sighed and rubbed the space in between her eyes.
"Okay, just buy me some time. I'll be there."
"But-"
Angelica hung up before Dolly could get deeper into detail about the mess Angelica would have to deal with and clean up later.
Angelica shoved her phone back into her purse and started running a little faster than she should've in heels. When the Schuyler Law Firm came into view the first thing Angelica did was pray but that lasted less than 15 seconds because she had disappointed God too many times in her life for him to take her request seriously. After Angelica's failed attempt at praying she collected herself and walked into the office. Angelica acknowledged the chaos the office was in but before Angelica even had time to take off her coat Dolly came rushing up to her with her clipboard that always seemed to be glued to her hand and red eyes that hinted at the fact that she may have been crying. All in all, she looked like shit.
B Her usually short, straight, perfect hair was frizzy and sticking to her face. Her makeup was smeared due to the crying she had been previously subjected to and her fingers were shaking as if she had just been through a traumatic experience. Alexander sometimes had that effect on people. The only put-together thing about her was her beloved clipboard that she clung to like a lifeline. The pages were still perfectly clipped together, maybe a little damp but Angelica didn't get a close enough look. Angelica felt an immense sense of empathy for the woman in front of her but she had to push that aside for now. There were bigger problems to deal with. Problems Angelica didn't know if she could solve.
Angelica ripped off her coat and threw it into Dolly's waiting arms. Angelica started walking at a strong, fast past with Dolly following close behind.
"So what's the issue?"
"Franklin said something that caused some controversy in the conference room."
Of course. Alexander was a ticking time bomb, always ready to blow. All he needed was a small fire, a match and Benjamin Franklin was that match. All Angelica knew was that he better be ready for one hell of an explosion.
Angelica continued her pace.
"What'd he say?"
Dolly started fumbling over her words again. She did that when she was uncomfortable."
"I'm not sure. I didn't quite catch it."
Angelica stopped dead in her tracks and spun around with enough force to break the heel of her shoe.
"Don't lie to me, Dolly. What did he say?"
Dolly looked down at the floor and took a shaky breath.
"He called him a bastard."
Angelica's breathing hitched.
"What?"
Dolly looked like she was on the verge of tears. She was a very sensitive individual.
"A bastard."
Angelica bit down on her lip hard enough to make it bleed.
"Good to know."
Dolly looked up at her co-worker in masked confusion. It wasn't masked very well but she tried her best.
Angelica spun back around and began walking. Dolly once again followed close behind.
"Hey, Dolly."
'Yes."
"Have you ever witnessed a murder?"
"No."
"Me neither."
Dolly tensed up but Angelica paid no attention to it. She didn't have the time. The pair continued to walk until they came up to the glass conference room where the "war" was being fought and a crowd was held. Angelica didn't really need to push through the crowd of people because a path was already made for her. Once at the door of the conference room Angelica took a small breath and prepared herself for the whirlwind known as Alexander Hamilton. Angelica pushed open the door with an expression that screamed mess with me. I dare you. The room went dead silent. The phrase "you could hear a pin drop." was made for scenarios like this one. Angelica nodded and smiled at the room.
"Hello, Gentleman⦠and lady."
Angelica noticed that in the corner of the room a fellow co-worker was sitting in a chair with a notebook. Angelica guessed that her job was to take notes.
"I'll start this meeting by saying to anyone who doesn't want to be a part of this shitshow this is your opportunity to leave."
And as soon as those freeing words left her lips half of the staff fought to get out of the room first. Once every distraction as she liked to call them was gone she turned her attention to the rest of the room.
"Now let's get down to business."
Angelica took a seat right next to Alexander who had a mischievous smile playing on his lips, and a look of wonder in his eyes.
Alexander leaned in a little closer than what would be considered platonic and whispered.
"You really are something, Schuyler."
Angelica Bit the inside of her mouth to try and hold off her smile but they both knew that it was useless. He could see right through it.
"What can I say, I'm amazing."
Alexander laughed and Angelica stood up to once again regain the attention of everyone in the room.
"Dolly, would you do me a favor and write a summary of today's meeting?"
Dolly nodded and looked down at her clipboard in an attempt to get the attention off of her. Dolly was so much like Elizabeth. She never did do well in the spotlight.
"Okay, jackasses I don't know what the fuck happened when I wasn't here but let's get one thing straight."
Angelica stomped over to where a balding Benjamin Franklin stood with his little posse of employees. It was funny she felt like she was in high school all over again. Angelica made sure that they were an inch away so it would be easier to slap the shit out of him if necessary. She shoved her manicured finger into his chest and made sure that he looked her in the eyes despite the fact he was a full 5 inches taller than him.
"The next time you call anyone in this office anything remotely close to a bastard I promise you will be a dead one."
Franklin looked down at her with an unimpressed look which was very new considering she had always impressed everyone she had ever met since the age of 3.
"Listen hereā¦"
Franklin paused as if he were thinking. Which wasn't good because Franklin wasn't known for being a thinker.
"...Woman."
Angelica looked at Franklin with a face that could only be described as dumbfounded. Angelica had been sexualized and catcalled countless times before but it had never been in a professional work setting and this felt different. She felt less than like there was nothing she could do. She guessed this is what her mother meant when she said " Sometimes Angelica, sometimes it really hurts to be a woman." But before Angelica could say anything at all Alexander was already lunging at the man himself and everyone else was trying t separate them. Angelica somehow found herself in the middle of the two and she was doing her best to push Alexander to the other side of the room.
The room was in chaos for all of 2 minutes when a sudden noise had everyone frozen
"What is the meaning of this!"
Everyone looked up to see the one and only George Washington looking back at the crowd of immature adults with an expression that conveyed nothing but disappointment that undoubtedly put shame into every one of their hearts. He had that type of fatherly power that was the optimity of I'm not mad. Just disappointed
Everyone separated from one another but Angelica still found herself relatively close to Alexander.
"Would anyone care to explain what the hell is going on here?"
The entire room tensed. Washington swore. Washington never swore. Franklin was the first to speak up.
"Sir, your son is a disgrace."
"Excuse me-"
Angelica spoke up before Washington could get really mad and she was sure everyone in the room was beyond grateful.
"The man you just called a disgrace was the same man you called a bastard you pompous white prick. You know there's a special place in hell for people like -"
"Angelica!"
Angelica heard her name and expected another executive or even Washington to be the one calling her out and her strong choice of words that would be deemed inappropriate behavior but when she turned around she saw not an executive or Washington but instead her very disappointed father. She should've known who it was. Her father had a very distinct voice, Not the kind, authoritative one Washington had but more of a powerful almost angry one. And on top of that Angelica should've noticed the tone of voice her father used. It was the same one he used when he was forced to discipline her as a child. The voice he used when Angelica failed to meet his standards.
"Dad! What are you doing here."
"I'm here to ensure that Mr. Franklin's visit was satisfactory but I can clearly see that my office has turned into a hellhole. In my office now!"
"But Dad-"
"Now, Angelica."
Angelica sighed and looked over to Alexander who was already making his way to a private room with Washington. The two Schuyler walked in the uncomfortable silence until they reached Philip's office. He was now retired but did frequent his office from time to time and besides Phillips ego was too big for him to not clean out his original corner office and give it to another employee who would benefit from it much more than him but Angelica was still new to the Schuyler Law Firm and still had no say in any of the decisions made. Especially when it pertained to her father. Once the pair had made it to the inside of Phillip's office they decided to skip over confessions considering he had seen all he needed to make a somewhat accurate account of the situation. Angelica took a seat across from her father's desk and crossed her legs over one another and folded her hands in her lap in an effort to look professional but of course, Phillip saw right through the act due to the fact that he was the one who had taught her those specific manners.
"Angelica, what was that? You used an immense amount of profanity, embarrassed a colleague, and misrepresented this company, and most importantly your family!"
Angelica stood up in defense and threw her hand up in the air.
"What was I supposed to do? That utterly incompetent man walks in here and disrespects us!"
"Who is us, Angelica?."
"Everyone!"
"I'm going to need specifics."
"Alexander!"
"What could he had said that would've caused so much tension?"
"He called him a bastard Daddy! Benjamin fucking Franklin called him a bastard and he did nothing to deserve that!"
Philip Schuyler stood in silence. Angelica didn't expect him to be silent. Knowing her father she would've expected him to argue and defend his old friend but instead, he just stood there thinking. After a few moments of quiet passed Angelica's father finally said something.
"Anything else?"
"He called me woman. Not a woman. Just woman. He made me feel like shit."
Philip nodded and took the necessary steps towards his oldest daughter and did something he hadn't done in a very long time. He pulled her into a hug. Angelica's father wasn't a cruel one. He just wasn't particularly good at showing love. He left the responsibility of hospitality to his wife who did a fairly good job of showing affection to all of her children. Philip rested his head on Angelica's head the same way he did the few he did hug his daughter as a child.
"Are you okay?"
Angelica nodded.
"I'm fine."
Philip sighed.
"He always was a jackass."
Angelica laughed.
"Yeah, he was."
Philip pulled away from his daughter to get a better look at her.
"You're sure your gonna be alright?"
"I'll be fine dad."
Philip smiled and placed a kiss on Angelica's forehead.
"That's my girl."
Philip broke away from the hug and made his way to the door.
"Where are you going?"
"To get security to escort our overweight friend out of the building."
Angelica smiled
"Bye, dad."
"Bye Angelica. See you Saturday."
Angelica waved.
"See you Saturday."
After Angelica's father had left she began her search for Alexander. After a few minutes of wandering, Angelica found him banging against the vending machine that had probably eaten his dollar so without giving him his drink in return. It had a tendency to do that.
"Hey."
Alexander turned around and when he saw Angelica his frustration seemed to melt away.
"Hey, Schuyler."
"How're you doing?"
Alexander laughed and ran his fingers through his hair,
" This has been a pretty shitty day,"
Angelica smiled and leaned against the vending machine.
"You didn't have to do that you know."
Alexander looked back at her in genuine confusion.
"Do what?"
"Murder him. I'm a big girl."
Alexander looked at Angelica with a knowing expression.
"I know but still.
"Still what?"
"Still I would've murdered him."
"Why."
Alexander shoved his hands in his pockets and smiled sheepishly
"Because I'd kill everyone for you, Angelica."
Angelica blushed furiously. It wasn't the most common romantic line but still, it was Alexander's and Angelica liked anything that was Alexander.
"You do know your crazy right."
Alexander took a few steps away from the vending machine, probably forgetting the dollar fifty it had stolen from him until he was directly in front of Angelica
"Maybe I'm just crazy about you Schuyler."
Angelica pushed off of the vending machine and closer to Alexander. Once they were centimeters away Angelica leaned. But just the point where Alexander would be in the position of chasing after her lips.
Angelica grabbed Alexander by the tie and spoke directly into his ear.
"I'm not that easy Hamilton. You gotta work for me."
Alexander looked back at her with an unreadable expression.
"Don't worry Schuyler. I'll get you to fall in love with me. Just you wait."
Angelica released Alexander's tie before walking away.
"We'll see Hamilton. We'll see."
Okay, so I know this was a really long chapter but I just had so many ideas and I didn't want to split this part of the story into more than one part so we all just ended up with this super long idea. As always feel free to leave reviews and tell me how you like the story. I don't really have much to say so see you next week.
