Chapter 8

The Andalite alarm clock woke me up five seconds or so before Elfangor, in human morph, knocked on my bedroom door.

"David!" He yelled. "We are to meet Lanilin in half of one of your human hours."

"You could just say half an hour, you know. You are on Earth. They're everyone's hours."

Elfangor had nothing to say about that.

The next half hour went by agonizingly slow. I just wanted to meet my mom, and have her tell me she loved me and that everything was going to be all right.

We morphed, and met the other Morphalites behind my house.

Well, it was sort of Lanilin's house now.

We all prepared to meet a Controller who wasn't Innah.

Tracy wasn't even really a Controller, she was just letting a Yeerk live inside her head.

We came up to the house, and I knocked on the door.

My mom answered, and when she saw it was me, she smiled. Then she saw the others. "Come in. We have a lot to talk about. Jared's still at work, so his Yeerk won't hear anything."

We walked into the house.

My mom, or maybe it was Lanilin, got a glass of water.

"David, your mother wants to speak with you. To establish true trust between us, I will leave her head, and I will stay in this glass for a few minutes."

I nodded.

My mother raised the glass up to her ear, and in a few moments, a yeerk fell out and landed in the water with a splash.

My mom turned to me, and her expression grew angry.

"What were you thinking! Invading the Yeerk pool. Do you realize what could have happened? You could have been killed. If you were still under my care, you'd be grounded faster than you could say Yeerk." Then she turned to Elfangor, who was trying to hide the smile that was making its way onto his human lips. "I trust you will take action in teaching my son a lesson."

"I can not promise such an action, Isabel. After all, I did lead them into this situation."

My mom had nothing to say about that.

"Although I'm mad at you for doing something incredibly dangerous, I'm still proud of you. My own son is taking on Visser Three himself. I can say that when I first held you as a baby, I couldn't imagine that that small little boy in my arms would someday be taking on evil alien overlords."

"Come on, Mom. You're embarrassing me in front of my friends."

She pulled me into a hug.

I found myself doing the unthinkable. I broke down and cried. Right there, in front of everyone.

All the emotions from the past few days—the time I found out that Earth was being invaded, the time I found out my parents were Controllers, the time my own Dad tried to kill me, the time I had to fight Visser Three in the Yeerk pool and watched Elfangor almost die—it all came out.

My mom comforted me as best she could. It was a relief to have her around and on our side.

Eventually, I sat back down at my chair.

My face turned red as I realized that all my friends had just seen me break down in tears.

Well, David, I thought to myself, you can forget about ever being known as the cool kid.

That had been all I wanted when I came to this town. To fit in and then become popular.

Now I didn't care about that so much as defeating the Yeerk Empire.

I watched my mom put Lanilin back in her ear.

"David. I'll have you know that this is a partnership between us, and she is not my slave."

I nodded. "Thank you."

We all spent the next couple hours just hanging out. My mom and Lanilin both kept switching control.

I was having fun, and I felt all my worries temporarily go away.

I felt nice, happy and safe. I knew we would have to fight again sometime soon, but that was far from my mind. I just wanted to have fun.
