Everyone else ... thanks for taking the time and reading the rest and hope you enjoy this one.
Slight warning this one is a bit angsty as it deals with childhood issues.
All the usual disclaimers ... as we go into the meditation session.
Chapter 16 - Meditation Session.
Teal'c's mind was churning as, in his usual silent and stoic manner, he lead Daniel and Vala away from the rest of the group and into the main infirmary area. … The events he'd witnessed were so unreal he couldn't help silently admitting to himself, the tumbling owl come dragon's antics reminded him of other cartoon characters he'd seen and laughed at as he had surfed the tv channels, while in the Mountain waiting for the next mission. He did not know U Sang or NightOwl, but because Samantha trusted them, he would not underestimate or belittle their amazing abilities by such thoughts. He did know, it was going to be difficult toning down his anger as requested ... Jackson's actions had put Master Jack's life in danger, as well as endangering another people's planet ... and felt the rumblings of discontent and guilt … along with the surfacing question … If he'd been more forceful when he'd found out the man had lied to both of them, would things have been different?
Seeing the group of worried nurses and doctor stop calming their patients, and turn to watch his group draw closer. Teal'c channelled his thoughts, and wanting the gentle but continuous whining behind him to stop, gave a silent huff and intoned quietly but firmly. "DoctorDanielJackson, you will stay silent. I will do the talking. It will be quicker that way." And knew from ValaMalDoran's silence, she understood his respect for her and would also stay quiet.
With a whining huff, Daniel immediately ceased, in his view, his quite righteous mutterings about what he should be doing. ... But, he knew that tone ... and didn't have any choice in the matter …. He was a prisoner between two silent guards, or the meat in the sandwich ... What with Teal'c's stern large figure in front, and feeling not only Vala's eyes on his back, but her 'sharp edged' silence as well ... It was so unfair! ….
As she'd been put on 'six duty' in this group by Teal'c, Vala had immediately resisted any more quiet biting comments to Daniel's mutterings, and was watching her charge like a hawk for the slightest flicker of escape or change. She also felt tense, really wanting Daniel to be back to his true self. … The one she respected, worked with, had come back to SGC for, and admitted to The General she trusted and loved like no other. … And, couldn't stop the other part of her quick mind flicking back to those two new beings she'd not come across, or heard about in her travels to other planets. Granted it was a different galaxy, but they were so amazing and such a team, … and knew from her earlier encounter with U Sang, she trusted him as much Samantha seemed to do. … Soo with all of them being in this beautiful City ... Her Daniel and The General would be all right ...
With Teal'c's words breaking through her musings ... Daniel's whining actually stopping, and the group coming to a halt. Vala tensed ready for action. Just in case her charge made a run for it, or started mouthing off again … He could be such a stubborn ass sometimes. … Then needing to know what came next she stayed on alert and listened to every word.
Having given his bow of greeting as he stopped by the group, Teal'c then addressed them. "DoctorJenniferKeller and nursing staff. U Sang and NightOwl did not harm us, and in turn were unharmed by their amazing entrance and actions. They have now reverted back to their former selves, and will with ColonelSamanthaCarter check GeneralJackO'Neill, as a life and sleeping chamber now covers his bed. I have no doubt ColonelCameronMitchell will report to you further details as soon as he can. We are unable to stay, as we would like to use a room for meditation to help DoctorDanielJackson to recover from his original ordeal."
Feeling some relief at his words, and remembering Sam's description of Teal'c's no nonsense tone and attitude, Jennifer knew not to push for more and answered. "Thank you Teal'c. It was must have been an emergency, because the infirmary is off limits to U Sang and NightOwl while we are treating planet based people. The computer at the nurses' station indicates a second phase is in progress, and the lights are still green regarding The General's health. Also, I'm glad to say things are settling down regarding the patients." then glancing at the nurse beside her, added. "Stacy, please take them to the mediation room, and ask the guard in the passageway to stay with them." then turning her attention back to Teal'c she continued. "He will not be in the room with you, but will be on hand to stop anyone else interrupting you, or be available should you need help of any kind, or we need to contact you. If we do, a yellow light will flicker in the room to indicate we need your attention or before he enters if you've asked for his attention."
With a nod to Jennifer, Teal'c intoned. "Thank you for your information. It is possible U Sang and NightOwl sensed the blow back of excessive energy was happening, hence their timely arrival. Their change of form enabled them to gather up the remaining energy so we could safely enter and exit the rooms and passageway. We will now follow your Nursing staff to the meditation room." Without looking back at his two silent companions, Teal'c followed Stacy out of the infirmary knowing Vala would make sure Daniel would not get distracted or start whining again.
oxoxo
Having listened to their instructions, Teal'c bowed his head in thanks to the Officer and Nurse Stacy, then lead Daniel and Vala into their meditation room, relieved it was indeed possible that no one would overhear their private conversations.
- - It was one of four private rooms, situated within a larger room that was off the main corridor, and as the entrance to the large room was tucked back on itself and just round a corner, was easily missed ... Unless, of course, there was a serious silent Officer, standing at parade rest in the main corridor on guard duty. - -
For the moment Teal'c, Vala and Daniel just stood looking around their room, and started to take in the pleasant peace and quiet it presented, rather than the deafening silence that stopped thought or made you too edgy to settle, they had all expected. It had the typical delicate but rather austere Ancient architecture and furniture, but had been 'softened' by 'human' or rustic touches. Two large green leaved bushy tree like plants stood in colourful painted pots grouped in one of the corners, and were the first they'd seen in the City. A large hand made rug covered part of the floor and fine decorative woven mats were on the tables, with colourful cushions on the grey straight backed 'ancient' chairs. These were round the grey ornate large table, on which unlit candles in holders, scent sticks in glass jars along with a lighter, from earth, were waiting to be used. In the small wall alcoves lights gave off a low glow, rather than the brighter lights in the other rooms through out the City.
Still feeling a mixture of defiance and intimidation rather than peace, Daniel glanced at Teal'c and in a tight edgy voice demanded. "How do you want to do this? I know you don't want to be here! Nor do I come to that. They can't leave me out like that." He tailed off the demanding whine in order to breath. … There were so many things rattling round his mind… and he couldn't find his normal companion voice of earlier, when he'd talked to Vala … Could just feel her sharp eyes on him and Teal'c's anger ….
"DoctorDanielJackson." Teal'c immediately intoned hoping to stop the whine from carrying on...
Not finished and having got his breath back, Daniel snapped back. "Oh! I get it! I've been a bad boy so it's all official titles, and telling the bad boy off. Isn't it Teal'c." and glared at him, feeling he was up before the headmaster, rather than having a chat with a friend… A friend he obviously didn't have … And wrapped his arms round his chest in protective mode.
For a brief moment Teal'c just looked at Daniel, weighing up the man's attitude and hurt glaring puppy-dog eyes, … Then with a slight bow he intoned. "I believe we should speak the truth, and as Master U Sang has asked, leave anger behind us. I also suggest guilt should be left for the moment as none of us are free of it. … We are here to settle your mind and stop it from becoming as Master Jack would say 'a stuck record'. Also to explain certain things you have missed due to stubbornness, or the entity that possessed you, these will help your mind move on to other thoughts and settle down to your former self. … To do this I suggest we sit at the smaller table and use some of the candles for our concentration and relaxation as we talk. If you will do the honours with the candles and the lighter." He stated rather than asked Daniel, before with a nod of understanding added. "Lady Vala will help move the chairs and cushions."
Knowing not to argue due to 'that' look and tone, Daniel huffed and sorted out some candles, then placing them and the lighter on the tray, carried it over to the small table.
Meanwhile as he sorted out the small table and then helped Vala with the chairs, Teal'c carried on explaining. "You are right about your title, but not the reason I used it in this instance. I needed your immediate attention, so you would not bury what you have gained from the loss the entity, in the whine of self pity. I know you are above and stronger than that person now. What you have done as part of both SG1 families, has proved that. While we are in this room I wish to use the titles of Lady and Master for all of us and those we talk about, rather than the rank they hold in office, or friendship we feel for them. Master denotes high-craft and learning rather than childhood, but in Master Jack's case it is obviously both."
Seeing he'd stopped what could have been a sharp retort from Daniel by his clarification, Teal'c carried on without a pause. "It is true Master Daniel, we would all like to be with Master Jack and Lady Samantha at this time for our own reasons. But as in the past, when more than one team-mate is recovering from injury, we split the duties of care between the rest of the team. You, Master Daniel are in need of our support and care, and we both know Lady Samantha or one of her team here on Atlantis will keep us informed regarding Master Jack. She also has the able support of Master Cameron and the others close to her. … This means we can start our session by lighting the candles and steadying our breathing. After that we will have our question and answer meditation."
Unable to find a comment, Daniel followed Vala's and Teal'c's lead and sat in their chosen chairs round the small table, and Teal'c added. "As Lady Vala is here to support you as her life-mate, and has been with you since you have woken from the mind room, she will join in and comment as she feels she should."
Resisting the temptation to smile or comment at his phrasing, Vala gave a silent nod of acknowledgement, to which Teal'c gave a slight nod back. Silently pleased he had not miss-read the subtle change in her attitude towards Daniel, and knew they would find their true companionship as life-mates in the near future. And quickly intoned. "Then Master Daniel, please do the honours and light the candle so we can start."
For the moment there was silence, and some tension as Daniel silently churned through Teal'c's words and Vala's silent reaction. … Deciding he wasn't in a position to argue technicalities yet … and he agreed with some of Teal'c comments … he nodded his answer. And staying silent he selected a candle from the tray, put it in front of him then lit it.
Not willing to meet Vala's gaze just yet, he left the lighter on the table but pushed it in her direction rather than handing it over to her. Then he sat back, watching what she did under the guise of concentrating on his flickering candle.
With relief there hadn't been another whining 'blow up' from Daniel, but reckoning the silence wouldn't last long, Vala knew she needed to keep serious and dig into those new feelings/reserves she'd admitted to. She had, after all, seen a glimpse of the 'proper' Daniel she wanted to be a life-mate to after they'd talked to U Sang. Only to see it disappear on their walk to the infirmary, and knew by his words Teal'c wouldn't stand for any nonsense, but wasn't hostile to her man. Soo they would find 'it' again and make 'it' stay … and silently chose a candle.
Having watched how the lighter worked, she managed to lit it and then her candle first time, before pushing the lighter in Teal'c's direction ... and under the guise of concentrating on her candle, watched both her companions and waited.
Feeling the ripples of tension lessen slightly, recognising Daniel's and Vala's actions for what they were, and the fact they would have to breath while waiting, … Teal'c took his time, …. calmly choosing his candle and placing it in front of him. Then instead of lighting it, he placed the two remaining candles in the middle of the table and lit them. He knew these would act as an extra focal point for them as the discussions took place, and then lit his own candle before placing the lighter on the tray. Now concentrating on his own candle's flickering flame, but aware of Vala and Daniel Teal'c started to silently slow and deepen his breathing, hoping the others would unconsciously follow his lead. Then when he felt them actually relax, he would start the question and answer session.
With the five flicker candle flames growing stronger into constant flames, the melting wax in their centres started to give off a pleasant hint of natural woodland – rather than the heavy herby/flowery scent or over powering tallow the group had expected.
Sitting back in his chair, Daniel realised the low table was not a barrier between them, more a thing to join or link them together, and the candles were focal points for them all, so he tried to regulate his breathing as ordered. But his edgy mind immediately jumped back to the things he'd been excluded from, making him demand sharply. "Teal'c, why did you come to earth? You weren't expected or called to come. No doubt you've told the others, but not me."
Hearing Vala start to hiss a reprimand to Daniel, Teal'c shook his head to stop her, then gentle and calmly ... as though soothing a child in distress, though his words were directed to the adult sitting across the table, answered truthfully. "Master Daniel, if I remember rightly there was some chaos when I arrived, so the reason for my visit was put to one side. The news and invitation was for Master Jack first, then both SG1 families, and Lady Samantha would hear it from Master Jack on his visit to this City. Or if I had missed him as timing is difficult between our planets, Master Jack and Lady Samantha would have heard it first and via a data burst, then both SG1 families along with General Landry. You were not slighted or left out in any way, and General Landry will hear it via a data burst at some point.
As I have spoken to Master Jack and Lady Samantha, and the time is right, I will pass on my news to you and Lady Vala. Master Cameron is also included in the news and invitation, as he is a fellow brother warrior and worthy leader of the SG1 family."
At Daniel's intake of breath, Teal'c added pointedly. "I suggest Master Daniel you let that breath out silently and slowly, then take a few more in the same way as you listen." before adding in his gentler stoic tone, and regardless of the man's reaction. "Master Cameron has lead us through many missions and has shown the leadership qualities that Master Jack hoped he would. You have also worked well with Master Cameron in spite of your attitude towards him. This disrespect was taken to extremes, as you blatantly disregarded his orders when visiting the planet with Master Jack. Now is the time for you to recognise and accept this fact, and put things right between you. ... But I digress from your question. The reason I came to the Mountain was to inform and invite Master Jack, and if possible the rest of SG1 to the birthing of my daughter …
"You mean your son's daughter. So you are going to be the Jaffa version of a grandfather again." Daniel butted in, feeling battered from Teal'c's words and needing to make his point.
With a slightly raised eyebrow, Teal'c intoned gravely. "I see the arrogance of believing you know it all is still too high. Perhaps Master Daniel you should remember the humility you had when feeling secure in the first SG1 family, and listen to what I have to say."
Stung by Teal'c's words and attitude, Daniel's mind was racing as he ducked his head, and taking a couple of slow breaths in the hope of slowing things down, heard Vala's gentle comment. "We know what you are going through, and you've been through this before with the original SG1 beside you. The edginess and tumbling thoughts will go and you will find that gentler side I've seen and heard earlier. We are not going to leave you."
Seeing Daniel give a slight nod but not raise his eyes to meet either of theirs, Teal'c knew the man was listening, so carried on in his gentler stoic tone. "Master Daniel, I meant what I said … My daughter will be born in six moon times. Also the news and invitation that Master Bra'tac and his Lady will welcome the birth of their son at the same moon time..."
With a whoop of pure delight, waving and clapping her hands, Vala exclaimed. "That is soo good Teal'c! I know I don't know Master Bra'tac but have heard great stories ... and will come and drag Master Daniel with me. … If we have forgiven him for his misbehaviour, of course." And with a bubbly huff she reached for the lighter as her candle had blown out due to her over exuberance, then unable to stop it she added with a chuckle. "Oh I bet Master Jack loved that news."
"Indeed he did." Teal'c answered, then with a slight smile, remembering the scene, added. "Though he nearly fell off my shoulders laughing with delight, which would not have been a good way to celebrate such news." then turning serious he continued. "When Master Jack wakes I believe there will be an SG1 team night as in the past. Also the video of our trip to the ancient waterfall on earth could be shown to those of our family who have not viewed it, or who wish to view again. As expected Lady Samantha is also delighted with the news of the birthing, and will no doubt bring Atlantis with her if she unable to visit in any other way." then looking at the man who'd stayed head down and silent, Teal'c added in a gentle but firm tone. "Master Daniel."
Feeling the bubble of delight at the news, ripple through him pushing the churning thoughts, too much space and lonely edginess to one side, Daniel glanced up at Teal'c saying quiet and truthfully. "I'm sorry. Of course I'm delighted for you and Master Bra'tac, and I want to attend with Vala. It was right you gave the news to Jack first." But couldn't stop his final comment. "Just as well it all happened and we missed the Gate to Atlantis then isn't it." from escaping as it flashed through his mind.
"Daniel! How dare you!" Vala exclaimed sharply ready to let rip at the man.
But before she could get started, Teal'c butted in calmly. "Master Daniel, I would have preferred none of this to have happened, and given the adult Master Jack the news in person or via a data burst as I expected to do on leaving Chulak." Needing to express his thoughts and feelings, with a slight nod of acknowledgement Teal'c added. "I too share some guilt for what has happened."
Accepting the gasp of surprise from Vala, and wide eyed expression from Daniel, Teal'c continued. "I should have physically taken you to the cabin when you lied to myself and Master Jack, and no other escort was available without raising a lot awkward questions as I could not travel alone. They needed us, but could not say why in depth in the email due to security reasons. I know you were not as busy as you claimed. If I had taken the stronger action and the entity was in it's infancy, Master Jack and Master Jon might have sensed the truth, and we could have done something about it, thereby averting the danger to the planet you visited or to Master Jack's life... "
Back in full edgy mode Daniel huffed and interrupted heatedly. "For the last time Teal'c! Jack will be all right and the people on that planet are fine. ... The Gate has gone out of alignment and will not return for a while, months or years probably."
Keeping his voice calm, Teal'c intoned firmly. "You did not inform anyone at SGC that is the case."
"Of course I did. Teal'c" Daniel insisted, then stopped as whispers of memory came through the edginess. … Taking in a breath and letting it out slowly he looked at the strong flames from two candles on the middle of the table. Then silently carrying on the rhythm of breathing in mediation … the whispers in his mind started to take shape and tell him their story.
Worried, Vala glanced across at Teal'c, who calmly nodded his reassurance and request for silence between them. Having worked with him Vala understood it, so nodded back to him and silently waited. Both were hoping this was the break through they needed to settle their friend's mind, in their own ways they had both recognised the true Daniel was in there. And they knew from their own past experiences of coming out of being possessed, there would be ups and downs as the true voice of the victim struggled to the surface, and then anchor down in their own mind again.
After a while, still looking at the candles and in that half aware state as the whispers formed their stronger pictures of facts, feelings and realisations, Daniel quietly and gently started to unconsciously voice bits of what was running through his mind. "I tried but it wouldn't let me. … Convinced me I had done it, or it wasn't necessary as the staff knew what they were doing. Would have thought of it or wouldn't believe me. … Everyone was cross. … My inner voice seemed to be in two minds ... when Jack came to the Mountain I didn't want to be near him for long … but part of me did … it was as if there were two voices and one was fight the other and losing ... But I didn't realise that at the time… It is the way I mull things over before committing thoughts or findings to paper or reports for briefings. So why should I think anything was different from usual … After all I always got the right result, or knew the answers to the questions everyone asked me."
With a gentle unconscious huff as though turning one page to get to another subject, Daniel then started on a new whisper that had pushed itself forward. "I've never been able to shake the feeling Jack didn't need or want me now he was at DC and was close to Jon ... they both could read Ancient so why ask for help or need me at the cabin. ... I admit Jon being cloned from Jack felt wrong, but I could cope with it as long as there was distance between them ... us. ... That inner loneliness I used to feel had gradually disappeared when I was with the SG1 the first time round ... it came back when Jack and Sam left and Jon was around, in the shadows. The only way I could cope with it was to make sure I was leading. With Sam and Teal'c being there and guidance it seemed to work. …. The ratio changed with Cam as leader, same rank as Sam, he was the solider along with Teal'c to watch our backs, I understood that. But he'd never been through those earlier years … nor had Vala … they didn't have our experience so I needed to be stronger than ever ... make sure he knew his place …. prove he could protect us … It worked we got jobs done. But it was a team not a family as it been with Jack … that could never return. I enjoyed working with Vala and trading knowledge … It had to stop … she was just using me as she had in the beginning … …. Since waking from the mind room I know I can trust her ... have trusted her with my life. …. more importantly want her in my life and it was the entity that isolated me from her and the others."
With a gentle shake of his head as a new realisation ploughed through the last whisper Daniel added. "I had a goal of my own … always wanted to go to Atlantis for a longer stay, always felt the pull of it on those brief emergency visits we made … But when it became obvious Sam and Jack were not going to let me go there, I hunted for and came across details of that other planet Jack and I went to … That became my goal. One I needed to keep quiet or it would be like Atlantis and I would not be allowed to get there. As I researched I knew I needed to take Jack with me before he went to Atlantis, so he couldn't wriggle out of I needed the President on board and a narrow window. The alignment of the Gates would restrict time for going and coming back, but that wouldn't matter because I would have what I really wanted…." And stopped feeling confused as he realised there had been gaps in his memories, in his attitude and trust in his past and present teams. As well the fact that Vala and Teal'c were right, their tones and words though hard sometimes ... were filling that emptiness, bringing up the right memories to the top. … That he had been the one stepping away from them, and they had not and were not going to leave him.
Slowly realising he would have to face them… could face them … Daniel raised his head and looking at them said softly. "I'm sorry. My mind is still in turmoil, but I realise I should have done things differently, and I've broken your trust and friendship and I don't want that."
Teal'c nodded, then in his softer reassuring tone added. "Master Daniel. That is the first step of many you will have to take to find your true self and regain trust all round. But, we all know from past experiences that it is the biggest one to take. No doubt Lady Vala agrees with me."
Vala smiled her bouncy smile, while trying to keep the rest of herself still, not wanting to have to light the candle again, and exclaimed happily. "Oh I do." before adding in a more serious tone. "But Master Teal'c it could be taken as the second or third one. He took the first one after our talk with U Sang and I could see and hear the real Daniel. Then unfortunately he missed or stumbled after that as his arrogant self showed it's head by the time we reached the infirmary."
With a nod of remembrance Teal'c intoned. "Indeed. It was in full view and we will have to take that into account as we work on making sure his proper self, anchors in his mind each time he stumbles."
Watching them, Daniel silently huff and obviously bite back the comment running through his mind. Teal'c acknowledged it with a gracious nod, before continuing. "I also believe Master Daniel is right when he admits it comes from his inner loneliness, and feel it will calm down as he learns to trust himself again. I believe as Master Jack has said on the occasions when we have strayed, and then with the help of the rest of the SG1 family returned to true ourselves … 'The friendship and trust we have for each other was dented but not broken' ... We returned those words and support to him when he has been ordered to deceive us and then returned to lead us on many more missions.
From these experiences, and the ones you have encountered Lady Vala since joining our family, we know it will take time, and honesty is the best thing when we find we are faltering along the way."
Then instantly turned his attention back to Daniel by adding. "But, I should warn you Master Daniel, you need to find the true trust in yourself again, and accept what is wrong and what is right rather than assume everything you say is correct. Also although the past family of SG1 may trust you again, Master Cameron may be less able to do so because of your attitude towards him. Especially regarding this last mission where you reject his and Master Jack's orders. And, of course you will need to make your peace and accept what Master Landry has to say on the matter of your future with the Stargate programme."
Daniel stayed silent through out trying to take it all in, knowing Teal'c was right they'd been through it all before on other missions, and of course his future was not certain by any means, especially if he wanted a future with Vala, and Teal'c would obviously stay on Chulak with his family. Through it all though, he couldn't get rid of the persistent little niggle that good had come of this and it was down to him and how he had done it. But was not going to push that point now, and gave a huff then a silent nod, so he could put his point across at the right time.
Noting Daniel's reaction, Teal'c decided more truth and background were needed, so carried on. "Master Daniel, Along with your close friendship with Master Jack, the SG1 family has always acknowledged your gifts for languages and gaining understanding from the past and other cultures, as well as being our family soul on many occasions. Masters Jack and Jon needed your gifts not only because of the Ancient artefacts they found in the area near the cabin, but also as Master Jon was being haunted by Master Jack's childhood and adult memories, and the very deep mediation I taught them was no longer keeping them at bay, and his health was deteriorating. This was affecting Master Jack, as well as Ladies Samantha and Cassandra who were unable to be..."
Knowing Teal'c's methods and reckoning he was being buttered up for a sting in the tail he didn't deserve, Daniel gave an impatient huff and butted in. "Teal'c! Thor dealt with the cloning problems at the very beginning when he mended Jon, and of course, Jack's adult memories would be disturbing so cause them some stress, that could be dealt with by SGC and DC medics. As for Jack's childhood memories. Well, he inherited the cabin and land from his family, loves being there and his way with children shows he has had a good family life. We know he loved his wife till his son died, and not surprisingly it all fell to pieces giving him the never ending guilt he suffers from, and copes with as he's now with Sam.
The reason he's never told us about his childhood is because we've all suffered broken families and loss of parents, so didn't want to let on he had a good and wealthy family. Of course, he should have talked about it rather than hiding it from us."
"That has always been your belief Master Daniel?" Teal'c broke in firmly but not in a threatening tone.
Feeling the ripple of excitement, that he was going to get what he wanted, Daniel shrugged his shoulders and thinking back added. "It is the only one considering he is such a private person. No family turned up when they found he had a strong Ancient Gene, and Janet must have hunted around and found his family tree. So, he was an only child, of a very small maternal and paternal families, and parents past on in his adulthood hence the land and cabin. That ties with the fact when Jack was close to death a couple of times, General Hammond was down as his next of kin…" and hesitated when the thought struck him, then added. "Guess, Sam must be that now, even though she's here in Atlantis."
Refusing to be drawn by the man's slightly cocky tone at the end, Teal'c gave a slight nod as he intoned. "Indeed, Lady Samantha is his next of kin now they are married. It is also true Lady Janet could not find any next of kin. In fact no one looked as Master Jack does not have a past regarding his birth family." and paused for a moment, so these words could sink in, and he could find the right ones for his next statements.
Vala frowned as she'd listened, she knew the basic idea of the family in earth's culture; she also knew from experience on other planets, people often hid their past to stay alive, and or to blend in so they were accepted by those around them. She had done it herself many times, and had made her bouncy nature part of it, which the General had seen through … Takes one to know one perhaps … and stayed silent. Wondering how much Teal'c was going to shatter Daniel's ideas, and if she could pick up the pieces to make him whole again.
Working his way through Teal'c's statement, Daniel recognised his normal silent questions and answers coming through the mushy feeling in his mind and replacing the edginess, so without breaking his gaze commented easily. "Well, his black ops service and training means his past work is top secret … information blocked, blanked out in forms and documents proves that. His birth and childhood can't be … can it? …. I suppose it could be to outsiders or people without high enough clearance. But he knows who his parents are or were. … We all do from birth certificates etc. tales from them or friends, and he has inherited that cabin and land. So, we know he had them and knew them. Because of his black ops work he kept the cabin a secret, a refuge, and told us about it when he felt it was safe to do so." Running out of steam, and feeling the familiar buzz of being on the right track regarding his friend, or it could be anxiety, and decided not to labour the point, so shut up and waited.
Noting Daniel's reaction, Teal'c nodded then intoned again gently but firmly. "On occasions I believe a child may not have a Certificate of birth, and can in later life inherit from someone who is not a blood relative. The term Master Jack uses for himself is a foundling rather than an orphan. Perhaps you know that term Master Daniel."
Brought up short by Teal'c's comment, Daniel considered it, then letting his mind take the steps said slowly. "A baby or very young child abandon buy the parents, usually in a public place … doorstep of a building, a porch somewhere. ... So, you are saying that Jack was left without any information about his parents or family. … No one could trace him even after an appeal. There would have been one for his birth mother's health sake. He was obviously found, and then he went through the fostering or adoption system I went through. He could have told me when I talked about my experiences. … It is nothing to be ashamed of. … He must have had a good family to have inherited the cabin. … Are you saying they gave him his name as well as a birthday, Teal'c?" Daniel finished with a sigh. Feeling hurt Jack had never told him this before, in one of their quiet chats together. His mind didn't stop there, it rushed on with the conviction he could have supported Jack better, even given Jon some support, even though since being part of SG1 he considered Jack a mixture of brother/father figure...
Till Teal'c's patient words and tone cut in. "Indeed Master Daniel, Master Jack does not know his parents, true name, birthing day or place. He shut his childhood memories in a box, in the very back of his mind ... and as he says 'threw away the key forever'. Unfortunately Master Jon opened that box again when childhood memories started to haunt him day and night… I believe they are called flash backs and nightmares, unfortunately my deep meditation methods were no longer working as they had been in the beginning, so his health was starting to fail. Master Jack was also affected, their cloning experience has left a unique connection between them, and he wanted to discuss this with you to find out if there was something in the past that could help them. Also as Lady Samantha was unable to be with him, he needed you as a second anchor while dealing with the mess at DC, your actions denied him those privileges. I am glad he found people he could trust in Master Gibbs's NCIS family."
With the truth dawning Daniel huffed. "He could have come out and said it clearly."
"He did not know who he could trust at DC in work or home, and he was excluded from his SGC family in the mountain and DC, because his cover as a Presidential messenger come lapdog was needed. Also, Master Jon's troubles and connection to him had to stay secret for both their sakes, that was the reason Master Jon stayed near the Mountain rather than going to DC, and was able to give that back up Master Jack needed when he found himself stranded on the hill top. You were the only one Master Jack thought he could write a cryptic mail to and get the right reaction and help. Unfortunately that did not happen, and I digress regarding his child and adulthood." Teal'c finished with a nod to close his point.
Resting his hands on the table and giving a sigh, Daniel acknowledged truthfully. "You've made your point Teal'c. I messed up with or without the entity inside me. And, I'm guessing his childhood was nothing I might imagine it to be."
Knowing he was getting through to the real Daniel, with a slight bow of acknowledgement Teal'c intoned gently. "Indeed it will not be. But you must understand Master Daniel and you too Lady Vala. Master Jack does not need your sympathy or to go over this information again. Especially as I hope, the trip to the mind room and his recovery means his memories are once again locked away in the box in the back of his mind, and will not trouble him again."
"No one will hear a word from me Master Teal'c, and I'll make sure that any talk Daniel and I have is kept under lock and key." Vala exclaimed firmly, as she looked from Daniel to Teal'c again at the end.
"I agree. Teal'c" Daniel said quietly feeling a shiver run down his spine.
Noticing Daniel's slight shiver, Vala acted on her deeper feelings for him by reaching out and covering one of his hands resting on the table, with her own. Surprised by her action Daniel glanced at her. Seeing her supportive silent nod, he realised he still had to gain her full trust, but could feel a deep warmth of encouragement ripple through him, and knew this time he was not going to ignore it or her. For once, unable to find words, Daniel nodded back his acceptance and understanding to her, then he turned his attention back to Teal'c and gave another nod of acceptance … Not realising his expression and eyes showed his true feelings of warmth and understanding, that had been buried by his own insecurities about finding another person he could love, and then the entity's growing dominance.
Noting the changes and the unconscious strengthening of the couple's bond with gladness and relief, Teal'c gave hint of a nod back before intoning seriously. "I believe I should start with the day Master Jack came to the attention of the authorities, brief details taken from their sealed reports as well as renewed memories run through this account. Also Master Jack was a child at this time.
The house was on the outskirts of a town, the name is not important. Though it was not a rich area, the houses were detached with their own small fenced area front and back. Neighbours usually kept to themselves and ignored what they saw. That day there was no sign of the male and female of the house, and a baby had been heard crying for a long period of time, also a young child had been seen at the upstairs window in obvious distress. Several neighbours tried the front and back doors to arouse the adults and or gain entry, neither actions were successful. No one wished to break down the door and face the consequences so the police were called.
I should state communications were not as instant as they are today, and the police usually entered that part of town in raiding parties so were not welcome, nor did they enjoy going into that area. They eventually came in force, and with the other services that might be needed regarding the children. Unable to arouse anyone, the police broke down the locked and bolted front door before entering in force and very loudly. They took the crying baby and very young child from their locked room and gave them to the correct authorities for care and treatment. The house became a crime scene as the male was found dead in a downstairs room, while the female was dead upstairs in the main bedroom ... both showed signs of defensive wounds and head injuries. Several downstairs rooms were in disorder from a fight rather than general untidiness. At this early stage the police concluded, the autopsies and evidence in the house or from neighbours, would inform them if an intrusion and murders had taken place, or an argument had got out of hand and it was murder and suicide."
"And Jack?" Daniel blurted out full of anxiety.
"There was no sign or knowledge of Master Jack at this time. The spare child's room in the house had not been touched nor the bed slept in." Teal'c intoned gently, then after a slight pause carried on. "Indeed it was only later when questioning the reluctant neighbours, as the child they rescued was too young to give them any helpful information. It came to light a young boy, thought to be younger than teenage years, but older than seven or eight had been seen with the male in the back yard area of the house possibly a day earlier. Later, another person of that neighbourhood, admitted seeing part of a fight between a boy and the man the evening before the day the male and female were found dead. The confrontation had ended with the female coming out of the house with sharp words to the male and both physically escorting the boy inside.
Taking that into consideration, along with the fact no signs of someone breaking in had been found, the downstairs locked doors and shuttered windows had not been disturbed. The police considered the boy must have taken all his belongs so there was no sign of him being there, after killing the male and female in retaliation for the earlier argument. He left using the spare back door key that should have been hanging on the empty hook near that door then locked it after him. The front door had been locked and bolted, as both had been ripped off when the police entered. The messed up furniture was either because one fought back or was done by the boy afterwards to draw attention away from the truth. They also believed the baby and very young child were saved from death because their door had been locked, that key and a back door key were found on the woman's body. The police immediately issued the boy's description via every means possible, as the main suspect and a warning he was dangerous, rather than considering him to be a lost frightened victim."
Wide eyed and gulping, a bit like a fish out of water, through shock and disbelief, Daniel held on to Vala's hand with both of his, for dear life. Preconceived ideas shattering and adult knowledge of his friend's capabilities were crashing through his mind ... He eventually gasped for air, and finding it then whispered. "He couldn't have … could he?"
With a majestic nod Teal'c went on. "Indeed he did not Master Daniel. But his history and lack of records regarding his birth and past, followed him to every child institution he was sent, and was the reason he was not considered for adoption or fostering.
Late the next morning a detective on the case returned to the house with a dog and handler, to reassess their ideas, and see if the dog could show them which direction the lad had taken. The dog made nothing of the child's room, but having been taken out and lead along the path and entrance where the boy was known to have been, the dog lead his handler back into the hallway and fussed around the bottom of a large heavy bookcase, that stored boxes and other junk in the hallway. The officers searching the house the previous day had ignored it believing it was attached to a solid wall. That is what the owners needed everyone to believe.
The detective and officer moved the boxes, which were later found to contain a mixture of junk and stolen valuables from other towns in other states. They believed these would have been sold on, or had been done to order and waiting for collection. From this quick look the detective was beginning to consider they had found a chain of unlawful people, which was now broken because of the murders and the publicity regarding the boy. Once the shelves had been emptied the bookcase was easy to move and showed a hidden paddocked door rather than the solid wall they had expected."
It was Vala who gasped "He was there all that time?" and Daniel shivered from top to toe.
"Indeed he was." Teal'c intoned with true feeling. Silently remembering Jon's shivers and tears as he'd relived what had been Jack's memories of that time, as though they were just taking place, along with Jack calmly reliving and supporting his clone through their meditation session. And didn't wait for their questions or reactions, just carried on with his explanation. "The male and female had indeed locked him in. It was the small L shaped cupboard area under the stairs, so he would hear and feel the footsteps of anyone using them, especially the authorities rushing in and out of the rooms and later the house. The area housed a small mattress, with bare amenities for the night or longer period of time without disturbing the household. This included a small amount of food and water. To accommodate ventilation extra air bricks had been built into the wall and hidden by bushes so the torch Master Jack had for light, which he used sparingly, would not been seen in the back yard. He had been told not to make a noise under any circumstances, and to obey when told to come out so he could be moved to his new home and life. To make a noise or be difficult in any way, the threat of death that came with him would be carried out and his body never found.
The end of the argument that had been witnessed, was Master Jack trying to defend himself from the man's anger at the low amount of money the man had managed to raise from the goods, Master Jack had 'helped' to steal that day. The woman's anger was because Master Jack should not have been taken from the house. Not even in the trunk of the car, escorted during the robbery, then returned to the trunk and staying there while the goods were fenced. Before being escorted back into the house, all with or without her knowledge. The temptation to get extra cash had been too great for the man to miss. The owners of the stolen property were out of town for several months, and Master Jack's prints were not on local record, not that either of them left any or were seen at the property. The man and Master Jack were very wise on all points of getting the job done without getting caught at any stage.
The male and female were not on the police radar for crimes so were believed to be upright citizens, with the male working out of the area as they were not on welfare records either. It was known by the people around them that they looked after children from time to time, so a boy suddenly turning up and then disappearing a day or so later would not have surprised anyone. The chance sighting of Master Jack in the back yard area, was the short time he had been allowed out before being returned to the cupboard area for safe keeping. This was allowed as the woman knew he had had a rough ride to the house, and needed to be in a reasonable condition when collected. As they could not risk him escaping, he was closely watched or tied to the chair by the waist, even though the area was fenced and the high side gate locked. I suspect Master Jack's very quiet attitude at this time, lead the male to take that risk of robbery.
The baby and the very young child were said by neighbours to belong to other members of the family, staying there while their parents moved into new homes elsewhere, and would be collected at different times. In their search of the house the police found information indicating it was a staging home to move children or young adults from one area to another. Unfortunately no names or addresses were found for the other members of the gang, just jotted notes regarding the baby and very young child indicating they would be picked up in a few days time but not who would do it. It is believed that if Master Jack had been collected as planned, he would have been delivered to a very remote rural farm to work or become part of a very tightly controlled travelling robbery gang, either way he faced death if he tried to escape then or in future."
His stunned mind starting to race with the need to know, Daniel whispered. "Was he kidnapped at birth. Were they travellers?"
"They were not travellers of the sort you mean. It is believed they were groups of educated people who would deceive and stole from people or organisations for a living, and would collect the children as they needed them. The children were moved on to other groups so they would not become known in the area, or had out grown the group's needs or the property they lived in. In Master Jack's previous place of living the garage could be entered from inside, therefore the child was put in the trunk of a vehicle, delivered to do the job before returning the same way, so never knew where they were situated. It was secluded from the outside world by trees, and names of towns etc were never mentioned by the adults in the children's presence.
Master Jack was removed in that manner on many occasions in the past, but this time he was stripped of clothing, bound and gagged then put in a sack with the prospect of death rather than a new life in another house. He had tried to protect a younger child from punishment, and others were starting to look to him rather than the people who ran the group. It was during one of the transfers of vehicles in his journey that the new people holding him decided to sell him on rather then kill him. His journey was a long and terrifying as he was not let out the sack till the last transfer. At that time he was hosed down, clothed, loosely bound then wrapped in a blanket so he could not escape or see where he was being taken, then laid in the back of a vehicle. On arrival at the house, he was carried resting against a male's shoulder like a 'loved' sleeping child, once inside he was released and put into the area under the stairs with food and a torch to await collection by a different party.
The children in the previous houses were only given names when being used for jobs, otherwise they were given a rank number by the group owner. They were never taught days of the week or knew about such things as the telephone, radio or television, just the skills needed for the jobs they were to perform for their masters. He has only known group houses, when very young he learned through play and chastisement, then on to harder lessons of life with the main rule to obey everything the adults told him or be severely punished. Naturally fear of police and any outsiders as well as being caught were hammered into him. He also knew if caught the other children in the house would be punished or killed as the group vanished to avoid detection. He has never forgotten the woman's small kindness, the man's greed and the detective's second thoughts that lead to him being found."
With her thoughts flitting around all the stories she'd come across regarding resilient children, her own past and the General she respected since meeting him, Vala commented quietly in shocked awe. "He had that care and beating the odds even in childhood." then as the memory flashed through her mind, she exclaimed with a touch of her natural bouncy excitement. "Oh! Lady Cassie told me the story of Master Jack giving her a dog when she came to earth. … He knew from his own past she needed something other than the humans around her to trust and love. … Sort of anchor of her very own."
With a slight smile remembering Cassie's excitement and growing love for the dog, as well as Master Jack's memory lived through by Jon, Teal'c intoned. "Indeed he did. It was the dog and his handler who coaxed the terrified child out of that dark area, and stayed with him as the police found out what happened to him. Master Jack wanted to be given the dog's name as he didn't have one of his own, unfortunately it was unsuitable for a child so he took the given name of the handler instead. This was changed when he was given his first lawful identity at his new children's home." Teal'c paused for a moment to gather his thoughts.
Knowing how shocking the information was Teal'c had been watching Daniel, noting though silent and concentrating on the candles on the table the man was taking it all in. And hoped it was settling his friend's mind, and would help him to understand why this subject was not for open discussion in the future, and then continued. "Master Jack has learnt how to use his skills and gain new ones with each setback or kindness given through out his life. He knows he has made many mistakes, and has gained strength from others along the way. And as he put it after one of our sessions, should not be put of a pedestal because of his past as he will quickly fall off it and land in more crap than before."
Feeling Daniel was still in the doldrums, and trying to steady down her bouncy curiosity from taking over as her mind had fixed on the fact that the child had grown up into a very strong minded adult, Vala blurted out at full speed. "So, who killed the adults? What happened to the other children, and to Master Jack? Of course."
Trying not to smile at Vala's quick fired questions, which was so like Daniel in his 'need to know' mode, Teal'c gave a slight nod and then intoned. "I will take them in order Lady Vala. When the medical examiner finished the autopsies he decided both adults had consumed large amounts of alcohol, and the bruises they sustained were not serious. However during the drunken fight, either at different times or together and possibly stopping the fight, they injured the back of their heads near the neck area, by hitting a sharp corner of furniture of some kind, rather than being hit by the other with a sharp edged object. Neither injury would have knocked them out immediately, or make them aware of how serious they were. As the adults' bodies were found in separate rooms and had not been moved after death, he decided they had retired for the night and would have discussed everything in the morning had they not died in their sleep.
Regarding the baby and child, descriptions were issued through out the police departments and media of that time. Eventually they were reunited with their own very distressed parents, both families were poor and lived in different States, and were not guilty of any crimes regarding the children. This gave the police officers concerned some idea of the size of the organisation but not the number of persons involved or their bases. Also as Master Jack was unable to give them any solid information of his past, it was decided he should be moved to another State in a different part of the Country to the others, with a new name and history to give him a totally fresh start in life. For this fresh start he gave detailed descriptions of the valuables he had taken from the house the male took him to, the goods were recovered from a known fence for stolen goods who lived in the area but sold goods elsewhere. The goods were returned to the owner when he came in to report the items were missing and no sign of entry or exit had been found. The details were added to Master Jack's official sealed report later.
The true identities of the male and female involved were never found as their papers were forgeries and lead to dead ends, rather than hints of the groups they were working for.
With a shake of his head to clear the pictures flooding though his shocked mind, Daniel looked at Teal'c and muttered quietly. "Janet was always very careful about our head injuries. Jack has always been at ease around animals, dogs especially. I doubt it was an easy job getting his trust or that he owned up to all his abilities or what he really knew. He had broken the law while growing up after all, and knew it." then with a sigh added. "So, they put it all in his notes, and him under special care, not the best start for a victim. … How did they decide on his birthday and age?"
Glad see it was the concerned Daniel, rather than to cocky 'know it all' one, Teal'c intoned gently. "I agree on all those points. Especially that Lady Janet always took good care of us. They decided the day he was found would be his birthday, and 10 years of age due to medical and other interviews at that time. It was during this time they realised he must be very street wise in the criminal sense of the words and canny with it. Though quiet they believed Master Jack might influence younger children in the wrong direction, and could be a difficult child within a small family unit, so should be kept within the authorised group units, where he could be closely supervised.
Unable to influence the authorises to allow them to keep in contact with the boy, the detective and dog handler presented him with two books before he left them. One of dogs, the other of general knowledge to help him catch up on what he had missed ... He cherished the books for many years.
It was unfortunate that his life in the authorised homes did not go as smoothly as everyone hoped, his newness, gaps in his knowledge as well as his use of fighting skills to defend himself or younger members, meant he became a scapegoat for the ones who felt insecure around him either young adults or staff. It was all added to his records and gave him the reputation of a crafty troublemaker … so he became as he put it, a rolling stone through the system till he came to the Cabin."
With a shiver of his own memories in that type of home before being fostered out, Daniel said quietly. "Alpha male rules the group ... always kept away from that group if I could." wanting to get away from his own memories, he reminded himself this was in the past, and added. "So the cabin he inherited was a last chance boot camp. You got sorted out … one way or the other ... and he managed to get into the Forces earmarked leadership from there."
Hearing the respect in Daniel's tone, Teal'c gave a slight nod of satisfaction, his friend was indeed returning to his better self and possibly a new understanding for others, and answered. "That is correct. It was lucky he was in the right area for it to happen. Though life was tough through the years Master Jack had picked up education, hiding the extent of it, and valued kindness when given. The group consisted of young males from different areas with disadvantaged backgrounds. There were extra cabins on the tree line for them as they stayed for one month. During this time the owner and friend arrived for a short visit and stayed in the main cabin. Spotting Master Jack's natural intelligence along with his curiosity about the countryside starting to break down his well formed barriers, they suggested he stay after the allotted time. By doing so, he started the path he now walks in work and hobbies.
The owner supported many foundations in many different States, one was for gifted deprived youngsters, which Master Jack entered and flourished enough to show his true intelligence. It was during this time he found his love of flying, planes in general and the night sky, amongst other skills. As well as those that he could not get a grip on, and knew he had to leave to other people. I believe it was hoped that Master Jack might join his new mentors in their line of work, but it became clear Master Jack needed a framework of the forces around him, rather than working solo with an organisation behind him. So he chose the Air Force, with a new name and background, that would bury the old one completely. The new version of his life is the one he would have had to tell you Master Daniel, and though you might not believe it, Master Jack never liked lying to you, or his team. Had you visited the cabin when asked, you would have helped them work though both versions of their background and through a difficult time.
The background story was that Master Jack Jonathan O'Neill was home schooled as he travelled around from base to base with his parents. His father Peter Jack O'Neill, an engineer in the forces and his wife died in an accident while on duty in Europe, he escaped with minor injuries but badly shocked. Having no living relatives and expressing a wish to join the Air Force, the forces supported him through the education scheme to this end. All facts of his past were water tight, including Master Jack's basic knowledge of the areas concerned, should they come under investigation by anyone including his superior officers, and were sealed at the appropriate time. Though you do not acknowledge it, Master Jack has always had the ability to quickly register the facts of the situation and retain them. He does not need the detailed knowledge you crave for.
Still trying to get his mind round it all Daniel didn't rush out any comment or questions, instead Vala's quick curiosity beat him to it. "How could his mentor and friend do that? His name must mean something, after all he tried to name himself after a dog in the beginning."
With a very slight smile, remembering Jack and Jon's reaction to his own question about his mentors and the answer given, Teal'c gave a gracious nod then added. "Lady Vala and Master Daniel. It is important that this information is not discussed again, one of the foundations they work with is top secret as is SGC. The Cabin has always been under the surname of O'Neil and could be traced back through the years even though that is not the owners real identity, and was used as a retreat for the younger mentor and his work mates, with the boot camp as it's cover story.
You are right, his name is connected to that time and his own choice. As Master Jack's mentor was known in the area as Jonathan, and they could not use the man's real surname as he used it in real life, and he refused to contemplate passing on his real given name to anyone else or use it himself. For which Master Jack was very grateful as Angus did not suit him. They decided between them that he could become Jack Jonathan O'Neill, and could emphasise the two ll's to quickly distract any other questions if anyone picked up the similar surname. We both know Master Jack is good at distraction."
As Daniel gave a nod, rather than butting in with questions, Teal'c continued. "Also, as the cabin was the first place he really relaxed in, it was agreed it would be his retreat from the world when needed. Arrangement for easy transport was also supplied. Over the years though the two kept their other lives separate, they kept in contact and met up at the cabin between mission. Their friendship flourished into a deep respect for each other and their work. His mentor didn't like the use of weapons but understood Master Jack's use of them, so they traded skills of getting out of difficult situations using whatever was to hand and went off into the hills to home in their skills or just to relax away from people.
The hill top Master Jack and Lady Samantha enjoy going to, and the one he went to after coming back from the planet and missing his trip to Atlantis, was one of the first places his mentor took him and he felt the first seeds of trust between them and the place itself. Knowing there is an Ancient settlement nearby and the strength of Master Jack's Gene one can wonder whether they might have connected in some way, unknown of course at the time, but might have given him the feeling of home or as he commented as we looked at the Waterfall for the first time ... his true roots."
With that Teal'c stopped, and glancing down at the candle on the table to take a moment and close the memories he had touched on, knowing he had said enough.
With everything was rushing round his mind, Daniel couldn't stop the whistle, as he blew air through his semi closed mouth. …. His friend was amazing and cunning … and realised Teal'c was right, Jack didn't like lying to him … any of their group… his family. Their trust was so special. He'd always made the throw away comment the Air Force owned him, and that was right. … And shook his head to clear the thoughts, then said quietly. "It's nothing like I thought it would be ... he's the one who looks after us ..." then as the thought struck him blurted out. "He understood what Sam and I've been telling him all these years! And Sam knows all this?"
Seeing Vala's bright smile, Teal'c gave a sigh and intoned. "As I said, Master Jack does not have to understand the great details you and Lady Samantha do, he only needs to understand the bare facts to get the picture of what is or might be needed. That goes for languages of the countries he has worked black ops in, so he can survive in any situation, and as he would say, 'where and when to throw the explosives or shoot, and which way to run to get the hell out of there in one piece.'
Master Jack explained his true past to Lady Samantha when they knew their feelings for each other could be taken that step further forward, and before she became his wife. Lady Sara, his first wife, never knew the truth, nor does Colonel Lou Ferretti, though I believe he knows Master Jack comes from a darker past than he lets on, and knows not to say anything about it. As must you Master Daniel and Lady Vala." And immediately stopped, then like Vala and Daniel looked around the room, which was now bathed in a yellow flashing light.
Getting up Teal'c intoned. "I will see why our attention is required. You will stay and reflect on what has been said." then got up gave a slight bow to them and to honour breaking the meditation session, before walking out the room.
Worry surfacing through his emotional turmoil now Teal'c had left, Daniel immediately turned to Vala asking. "What do I do when I see him. He been through so much…"
Seeing this was 'her' Daniel back again, and was that 'little boy lost' the General had mentioned as they had walked the corridors of SGC looking for him, Vala smiled and gently butted in. "Daniel, you both have as children and adults. Now you both know the truth, you have to put that information away and treat him with the respect and friendship you had before he left for DC, and lose that 'I know everything and don't you forget it' attitude you've shown recently. He need his friend back, the one who answers his questions with the truth but also knows how to give gentle advice when asked. We all want that side of you back again. That is why with Samantha and Jon gave their blessing for Teal'c to do this." then she beamed her cheeky smile, as she felt her bouncy attitude break through her serious side, and admitted. "I love you life mate, where ever that may take us. So get you head into gear and watch your step, okay."
Reacting to her cheeky smile and admission of her love, Daniel laughed, recognising the truth of her words, the fact she wasn't leaving him, and felt a ripple of strength in his body and settle in his mind. Taking a breath, he nodded with a slight smile to her, then focused on the candle in front of him and started to think back over everything Teal'c and Vala had been saying. … Realising through it all he'd been so wrong, he'd not been left behind as he thought … would never be left behind. Bridges had not been broken beyond repair … he just had to find his old self and accept new friendships, respect for those around him … Talk to Jon … get his friendship with Jack back to where their banter would ease his own obsession and sometimes break Jack's darkening mood when it showed.… He already knew Jack understood him … their talk in the mind room proved that … and Sam understood as did Teal'c otherwise she wouldn't have asked him to do this …. He could and would cope, and ask when he found he couldn't would that work… He also started to understand Jack's attitude towards children and their childhood … how it felt … how he and Sam felt about theirs… and tumbled back into other details Teal'c had given….
Seeing Daniel concentrate on the candle Vala silently settled herself to wait and watch, ready to react ... should ... nope she knew him too well … it would be when Daniel wanted to discuss his thoughts. … And noticed with some relief, his very tight grip on her hand had already loosened into a natural handhold, while still resting on the table. And, let her mind wander back to the 'child' General they'd seen do amazing things, mix in with the history they'd just found out, and the adult General she'd met and talked to … and wondered just who was going to or who had surfaced now. It was right it would take a little longer than the others. So that had to be why the yellow light was flashing. … After all, the City, U Sang and all the others wouldn't let anything go wrong ...
Oxoxox
Stepping out into the corridor and seeing two other officers with the guard, Teal'c stopped and greeted the senior one, with a mixture of relief and tension, as he intoned in his usual manner. "ColonelCameronMitchell, is there news?"
Facing Teal'c and feeling a sudden rush of pent up anger he'd thought he had quelled, Cam blurted out. "Yes, and not good! Colonel Carter wants all of SG1 in the Gate room with her. But, I don't want Doctor Jackson anywhere near her or the Gateroom!"
With a nod, Teal'c intoned. "We will talk in the outer room as to why you do not wish to carry out Lady Samantha's instructions."
As he followed Teal'c into the outer room, and the two guards waited outside, out of earshot, Cam blurted out. "That man is a menace. It is all his fault the General is in trouble."
Though feeling the sudden rush of dread, at the mixture of anger and distress in Cam's tone and words, Teal'c calmly intoned. "I believe you should explain your reason and the orders face to face, and only once." then hoping to calm them both, he admitted. "You are understandably upset. I too do not wish to lose Master Jack again, as we thought we had on the Odyssey before we heard his voice over the speaker reassuring us he was alive."
Seeing Cam's slight nod, acknowledging their shared horror of those moments, and having seen his flicker of puzzlement earlier, Teal'c went on to explain. "We refer to males as Master, and females as Lady, as we have been discussing matters, rather than using their rank before their given name. The title Master is of adult reverence rather than an expression of childhood, though in Master Jack's case it is both. I should also add, Master Daniel is more himself and is sorry for what has happened..."
Cam snorted and interrupted heatedly. "Been there, accepted his apologies and promises ... and still got into trouble because of the 'good' Doctor's attitude. But. Not again!" then sighed, knowing his anger was not wanted, then taking a breath admitted. "You are right, Teal'c. I should explain it to you all face to face. Though I will have my say regarding Doctor Jackson before we leave the room. Unlike him I do not belittle people I respect in public …. And, I do know his worth to us as a team mate, and to earth in the past and no doubt in the future."
With a nod of acceptance, and some trepidation, Teal'c silently lead the way into their smaller room, where Vala and Daniel had been discussing the revelations about Jack's past, while waiting for Teal'c to return.
oxoxo
Taking in the more homely atmosphere of the room, and seeing Vala and Daniel stop talking and glance his way as he followed Teal'c in, Cam noted Daniel didn't have that hangdog expression of 'sorry' he was expecting to see. In fact his expression was of one of expecting good news and no trouble at all, and Cam felt his anger shoot up and spat out. "See you've turned that famous Jackson puppy dog charm on again. No doubt closed the chapter on events thinking everything is fine with the universe, now you've got rid of whatever it was, and told your side of the story. Well, that is not the case Doctor Jackson. Not by a long mile.
Vala, if you are going to be his so called life mate. Better find another really strong pair of handcuffs, in the hope of keeping him out of trouble. And a cage to keep him in because you'll need to sleep somewhen. Or better ..."
And was stopped by Teal'c's sharp command. "MasterCameron! Cease and take a long breath. Then explain why Lady Samantha needs us in the Gate room, and how Master Jack is. Your anger against Master Daniel should wait till you have explained everything."
Cam stopped walking and automatically took a long breath as ordered, knowing Teal'c was right, but also some facts needed sorting out. So released the breath and came straight out with it, while keeping an eye of their reactions. "Fine. U Sang didn't have time to explain it all when he was talking to General Landry just now, the main points are. The General gave his life strength to disable the entity that Jackson calmly played host to, so it would not take over this universe by blowing up the planet we visited and gaining energy, or our own planet when we got back as it's plan A had failed. And Atlantis was needed to get rid of the entity and save his friend. U Sang believes it was all done subconsciously by the Ancient Gene and download, along with the General's natural instinct to protect his team or family. Not only that, the General was close to exhaustion due to his undercover work at DC, and that attack on him before he arrived at the Mountain."
Seeing Daniel start to open his mouth to comment, not wanting any of his back chat, Cam pinned him with a stare while adding. "Jackson, don't even start. He treated you like a brother, you've been there for each other on numerous occasions, know he doesn't ask without good reason. He asked and you told him you were too busy to take Teal'c and visit him when in fact you weren't. You lied to Teal'c, myself and Vala in words or evasion. No, correct that to everyone when back at base. We all trusted you."
Taking a breath to stop himself from getting too angry again and off the point, Cam let it out and then added. "SG1 will be disbanded no matter what happens, and General Landry will decide if you can be trusted at the Mountain or going off world in future. If you are, I will recommend you have experienced and armed escorts where ever you go. And, you will go through what ever protocol we think fit, and you have not had a say in, to make sure you are not hiding any more pets!"
Paling with shock at Cam's angry onslaught and the reality of what had happened sinking in, Daniel started to try to apologise and explain. But Cam held up his hand exclaiming. "No! I do not what to hear any of your lies or sweet talking. Jackson! Those days are gone. And if you say The General will be all right I'll …
"It is Master Jack." Teal'c butted in firmly, taking the wind out of Cam's anger, and seeing his confusion explained. "He does not like to be referred to as 'The General', though he does understand the respect you and others use the term. He says it makes him feel like 'he's a dead man walking' and as he is alive does not wish to tempt Fate." then paused before asking the dreaded question. "Is Master Jack alive?"
Taking a breath and realising Teal'c did not deserve this added tension, Cam ignored Daniel and answered him. "Yes, and he is still a sleeping child with an adult mind, but might never wake up. Atlantis is unable to give him the extra strength he needs to make that transition back into his adult self, it can only sustain his child's body as it is and we do know for how long, so he is trapped there and he knows it.
U Sang hopes the Nox will come and perform something to give him the strength he needs to come back to us. He and … Lady Samantha, are in a mind link with Master Jack, that is the only way we can communicate with him, they are in the Gate room waiting for the answer to General Landry's beacon request. Jon, Cassie and NightOwl are in the infirmary room with … Master Jack's sleeping body. NightOwl is also linked to the mind link."
Seeing Teal'c's frown and the others stunned expressions he added. "It's creepy, and I've no idea how it works or for how long. But through talking to … Master Jack they found out Lyla of the Nox visited him through her family mind link while still based on their home planet. They'd seen an energy spike, got curious and found Atlantis and … Master Jack in the mind room. Hopefully they will respond quickly. If they are in the right Galaxy of course. U Sang and … Lady Samantha believe it would help if we are there as we have a connection to… Master Jack as a working family."
With anger still bubbling under the surface and finding it difficult using the title Master, Cam immediately turned his attention back to Daniel commanding. "Once in the Gateroom not a peak out of you. No matter how long we have to wait. I don't care what titles you or the others give them, Jack and Sam don't deserve this. Especially as he is trapped in that twilight world of unconsciousness knowing that somewhen Sam is going to have to cut her link with him. Just like he had to cut his link with Jon, so Jon wouldn't feel him die. … Yes, Teal'c and I heard it in Jon's cry as we waited for the silence to be broken after that explosion, and he realised what the General had done so he would not feel his death. I recognised it because I've been there when one identical felt his other twin die in battle.
Your actions lead to this and I didn't see any remorse from you as I walked in. But now as our last act as SG1 we will go to the Gate room and help to bring the man and leader, we all respect, back home." and turned away from the group ready to lead them out.
Vala, Daniel and Teal'c, who'd been standing nearby, didn't move, they were all taking in what Cam had said, along with the tone of his voice that showed all his anger and deep respect.
Still churning with anger and other emotions, Cam only took a couple of steps towards the exit before spinning round to face the group again, and with a heated sigh admitted. "You know what really bugs me about you Daniel. Is I know exactly how you felt, and why that stupid pal of yours grew inside you. It's that self doubt of yours. You know the one that Colonel Jack O'Neill and the original SG1 helped you over come to become a stronger person. Who could face and conquer their own fears and help others rather than hiding behind self erected barriers. That stronger person we've trusted and respected is still there, and perhaps Vala will be the one to help you get it back and build on it.
SG1 disbanded but never left you on your own, not even when Sam went to Atlantis. You've always thought I pressured General O'Neill into giving me this job. Yes I asked for it, because I wanted that tight team to be around to face whatever the future threw at it. But, do you really think General O'Neill would trust the team he brought together and became his family, to someone he could not trust or do the job. Granted I had never faced the aliens you had, but he knew I would learn from you all as I did my job of helping Teal'c protect the team and bring them home. He also knew I had lost 'family' team members while SG1 fought to save the world. There are no hidden deaths in the sky in a fight like that, or soft landing, you make 'that' decision and stick with it, hoping your other team back at base will come and find you if you survive the landing. I was lucky, others were not, and General O'Neill was there for me in hospital, and stood by me and others as we recovered. Because he worked with the crews of our flight command, he knew my record and trusted it enough to let me become leader of SG1.
I did not go into it blindly so I understood your fears and gave you space hoping you would accept and change in time. We worked well together, trusted our lives to each other on missions, but before and after those barriers of mistrust came down. I tried hard to get you to come to our 'time out' together after the missions so we could bond into a true team. Sam, Vala and Teal'c joined in, you would only come if pushed or to save face. Never on your own free will. Well, now you will be on your own, so you will have to look into yourself and use all the strength we have given you, if you are to make anything of your future. I hope you do, because believe it or not Daniel ... I like and respect you, and have seen how you work with your own team back at the mountain."
With a nod, that Cam saw, accepted with a slight nod of his own, Teal'c intoned. "I believe it would be right for Master Daniel to say his thoughts, before we leave this room. Master Daniel they should be brief, and we know your mind is still trying to grasp Master Jack's history as well as what you have been through. We also know there will be trust issues and that these can be over come in the future. This is the first step between you and Master Cameron."
Taking a breath trying to sort his own thoughts from the emotional turmoil his mind was in, Daniel looked round at the group. Could feel Vala's slight squeeze of his hand and knew she supported him, would be stand by him. Moving on to Teal'c's calm stoic expression he saw a slight nod of support. Then feeling his own inner calm ripple through his mind, he faced Cam again, and said. "I know if I apologise you have every right not to accept it. But I do sincerely apologise for not showing you the respect I should have had for you, after and before our missions. Jack was right in making you our leader and you have always helped us come home. And you are right, I need to find that inner strength I've gained through both SG1's as I come to terms with what has happened and what I have learnt. I also want to help bring Jack back to us, and for that I may need to speak to Sam in the Gate room."
Cam couldn't help his slight smile, before commenting with a sigh. "Yeah, give you an inch and you take a damn mile, just like on the planet when you disobeyed not only my orders but General O'Neill's. Well, this time you'll be facing Sam, his wife ... and if she doesn't take you by the scruff of the neck and shake you as you step over that line, then I will."
"As will I." Intoned Teal'c with a slight nod and very stoic expression.
Making Daniel glance round at Vala for some support.
But, she nodded her agreement with the others at him.
Even though he could see Vala's eyes were bright with mischief, Daniel knew she was deadly serious, and glancing back at Cam, said. "Jack has always let me run with the situation when needed …"
"Technically he's not there. Daniel." Cam butted in firmly, knowing how infuriating the man could be as he inched for more wriggle room in a situation, and added. "Sam is the leader of this City and I'm still team leader of SG1, so our words are the ones to obey."
With that Teal'c walked over to the small table intoning. "Our mediation session is over. Master Daniel, blow out the candle with calming thoughts and wait."
Daniel did so.
"Lady Vala do the same." Teal'c intoned.
As Vala did so, Teal'c turned to Cam and added. "If you would to the honours and blow out the two in the middle of the table, after my turn, to seal the end of the session."
With a nod Cam walked back to the table and watched Teal'c take his turn, and then feeling a strange calmness come over him, knowing that what would follow would be the last mission together, he blew the candles out, then stepped away from the table ready to lead his team out.
Hearing Vala and Daniel move, Cam looked at Teal'c and said. "If you would guard our six Teal'c, I will take point with Vala and Daniel in the middle. When in corridor we will join with our escort, one to lead and one to stay with you, as he is Daniel's personal guide and our link with the infirmary."
With a nod Teal'c moved out of Vala and Daniel's way, and they formed up in front of him. Starting to walk out of the room Cam said. "Right. SG1 lets go and bring 'Our General' back to his wife and home. Where ever that might be."
"Indeed." Teal'c intoned.
"What was that?" Vala exclaimed as the lights in the room suddenly went out leaving them in darkness, with only the light from the other room to guide them in the right direction.
"Atlantis telling us to get on with it I expect. After all..." Daniel blurted out.
"Daniel!" Cam huffed as they started to walk across the outer room.
"I was just saying..."
"That's the trouble Daniel, you always do." Cam butted in heatedly.
"Indeed. And I suggest some silence from now on DoctorJackson." Teal'c intoned.
"Some hope." muttered Vala under her breath and with a giggle.
Which brought them out into the main corridor, and facing the two officers waiting there.
Cam nodded a greeting and added. "If you will lead the way to the Gate room please." knowing full well if he didn't they would get lost, the place was huge and a maze. Turning to the other one he added "If you walk with Teal'c you can look after your charge and inform the infirmary where we are going."
And with that they made their way to the Gate room. Not quite in silence as in passing one of the archways that gave a glimpse across the City, they realised night had fallen and Atlantis looked just as beautiful all lit up as she did in day light. And that of course gave way to comments, as did Vala's that they would all be meeting up at Chulak in the future so this was not the last one….
