Yes … Cam and his group finally made it to the Gate room…. So on with the ramble.

Chapter 17 – The Gate Rooms on Atlantis and Earth

By the time Cam's group were lead through the archway of the higher passageway leading to the computers consoles, which went on round to the top of the stairs down to the lower levels and landing area before continuing on out of the Gate room to another part of the tower, all conversation had stopped and silent anxious anticipation had taken over. Having a good overall view Cam brought his group and guide to a silent halt, and checked out the area.

He immediately noted the people in the room were gathered in quiet groups, with the two security officers on the lower level silently alert at their stations, rather than everyone striding around in a high state of anxiety. Also Sam and U Sang were sitting at the bottom of the stairs, as they were eye to eye with each other and obviously still in their mind link. As they were calm, probably oblivious to what was going on, nothing alarming had happened since he'd left them, and decided they should stop at Colonel Shepard's group by the computer consoles first.

He was just starting to make hand signals to the group of his intentions, when Teal'c's quiet stoic intoned question from the rear of their group stopped him. "DoctorJackson, do you need the rest room before we talk to ColonelJohnShepard to find out what has been happening in ColonelMitchell's absence?"

With an immediate and indignant huff at the suggestion and tone, Daniel turned back to Teal'c exclaiming. "We've just come from there Teal'c! I'm fine! Just need to talk to Sam and Jack now, that's all!" It was so obvious, if he talked to Sam and Jack while she was in the mind link everything would be all right between them. He didn't need to wait for long winded discussions with anyone else, so why couldn't Teal'c leave him alone….

Cam, with a sigh of his own at that exchange, and glad Teal'c had vocally reinforced his own thoughts about where they should go, glanced back and quietly but firmly ordered. "Daniel, you will not say anything to Sam or try and get her attention, unless she or Colonel Shepard gives you the go ahead. Her needs are more important than yours, so stop fidgeting like a school kid on a sugar high or the need to go to the boys room, and wait." then glancing briefly at the person next to Daniel added. "Vala, control your life-mate or I will ask Colonel Shepard to open the gate and chuck him out!" then to include the whole group he finished firmly. "Sam is still in a mind link and not to be interrupted, so we will talk with Colonel Shepard's group first."

He then immediately started to walk in that direction, knowing their entrance had been noted by the Colonel's group, and wondered if U Sang would also have some kind of sixth sense of what was going on outside the mind link. He knew Teal'c had when meditating, and earth cats were rarely caught napping so that probably meant U Sang was the same. As they got closer to the group, Cam also realised a new officer had joined them. Probably for the night watch as time had past. And saw slight smiles cross the faces of Colonel Shepard and Richard Woosley as Rodney McKay suddenly started pacing and waving his arms around, while expressing something to no-one in particular. ... Now within hearing distance he couldn't understand it, especially not in that rushed excited tone of Rodney's. Getting close enough to issue his own view, without it ringing round the Gate room, Cam couldn't resist his comment. "Rodney on a sugar rush or needs a rest room break?" knowing the Colonel must have heard or seen what had just happened with Daniel.

With half an eye on his friend's continuing antics, and an even bigger smile, Colonel Shepard acknowledged Cam's arrival by replying easily. "Like Daniel he's has had his break. It's more another scientific knowledge sugar rush rather than the sweet variety. Atlantis keeps throwing up interesting information regarding that new tower, some Rodney believes are impossible and others are just well … mind boggling but possible, so he's trying to work out how etc. It appears there used to be a wooded and green area on the ground level that connects with another tower we've not been able to get into. Doubt it exists in living form considering how long Atlantis has been asleep, be interesting to see how it was used and what we can do with it now there is power in that area. In another level there appears to be more very well shielded ZMPs, hopefully new ones rather than an dumping area for empties. It doesn't say which on the list, and we can not access it to find out. On higher levels there is a very large jumper, along with some interesting fighter craft with an exit area, also what could be a sealed weapon store, if our translation is correct. It is not translating everything." then with a sigh he added. "Not to mention a lot of computer jargon that is sending Rodney up the wall as he can not gain access to it or the tower to 'play'." then turning to Teal'c, he asked lightly. "Doctor Jackson giving you trouble?"

With a nod Teal'c intoned seriously. "Indeed. He wishes to talk to ColonelSamanthaCarterO'Neill while she is linked with GeneralJackO'Neill. We have said it was very unwise. ColonelMitchell has threatened him with a quick exit out of the Gate if he disobeys." then with a slight pause, which was not long enough to anyone to jump in with a comment, Teal'c dropped in his own news. "Regarding the very large jumper, as you call the Ancient spacecraft rather than the knitwear, there is one that has not been completed at the waterfall site and..."

On hearing the last bit Rodney interrupted excitedly. "Has it got supper drive or a small gate.. what's inside...

With the others smiling at this, Teal'c remained stoic whilst neatly cutting Rodney's verbal flow off. "We did not see a small gate when we quickly inspected the craft, but GeneralO'Neill believes when the right pieces have been put in place it will at least have hyper-drive capabilities. He also believes it is a supply craft for the Cities like Atlantis so has living accommodation for a small crew and may travel from one galaxy to another with ease. The tablet device DoctorJackson had earlier is likely to have complete details on it, providing it has was not permanently damaged by experiencing the forcefield shock."

"Rub it in why don't you, Teal'c!" Daniel huffed, before aiming all his attention and charm at Colonel Shepard, knowing the man was in charge while Sam was otherwise engaged, so could over-ride Cam and the others, and emphasised his request. "I do need to see Sam so I can talk to Jack ..."

Having seen similar tactics from Rodney in the past, John laughed, then added seriously. "No Daniel. No one goes near the Colonel until U Sang or Sam herself indicates it is all right to do so. Also. Though we can't open the Gate to chuck you out, because Atlantis has blocked us from the computers, that does not mean you can disobey my or anyone else's orders. There is always the brig, and Telya or Ronon will do the honours to get you there if needs be."

At which point the pair who'd been resting on seats nearby, sat up and nodded their agreement. Then John included the rest of the group and adding in a friendlier tone. "I'm guessing none of you will want to go to the mess hall. So you can grab food and drink from the other table and find chairs to rest on while we wait for the Nox to answer our call. Or the Colonel and/or U Sang to surface to tell us how things are regarding the General. The infirmary has informed us we still have a green light regarding his life status.

Regarding that damaged device of Daniel's, we put it by one of the bigger computers in Rodney's lab to check it out later and they started talking to each other." Seeing raised eyebrows from the group, he added. "As in numbers and letters that Rodney could read, if they weren't racing across the screen at a hundred miles an hour, and much to his disgust we are leaving them well alone till either one of the machines indicates it is back to normal. As soon as that happens Daniel, I suggest you take charge of it and return it to the General, explaining the why and how of the matter." John finished sternly.

With a huff Daniel accepted his future fate, while silently chuntering to himself. … That Jack already knew all about it, gave Atlantis the order as payback, no matter how much his friend might deny it. It was his style after all. He also needed to speak with his friend now he knew about his childhood, it all explained so much about the man, and also he needed to explain he really didn't know how this mess happened. That he would never have put that planet, the universe and his friends in that kind of danger. ... Then felt whispers of memories of past entities that physical or in dreams had made him threaten them all, and Jack with or without his team had pulled him back from the brink. So, was that why he'd ignored his friend's emails for help and had apparently played cat and mouse with the rest of the team back at the mountain. If so there was even more reason for him to talk to Jack before the others did… While silently following the group.

By general quiet agreement, everyone excluding the new officer of the watch, moved over to the food table, realising they were hungry, also it was always wise to eat and drink in the quiet times before 'things' kicked off. Quietly choosing their food and drink they splintered into little groups, but kept within earshot of each other and their voices low rather than in whispers. Naturally Rodney cornered Teal'c and started harrying him with questions about the Waterfall site, to which Teal'c answered in his usual polite short manner. Ronon, Telya, Vala and Daniel made another group and not surprisingly Vala took the lead in questions about everything, it was her first time in the City after all, and got comments back from all of them, including Daniel. That left Richard, John and Cam, with Cam trying to keep an eye on Daniel to make sure he didn't sneak off towards Sam and U Sang. Not having had time to get the whole story earlier, Cam quietly and politely aired his concerns. "Everyone seems to trust U Sang and NightOwl, but do you know this mind link is safe for The Colonel and The General?"

With nod and understanding Cam's concern, John Shepard explained. "Yes, the mind meld is safe and an amazing experience." then with a slight grin asked. "Have you heard cats meowing to or at each other or owls at night?"

Smiling at childhood memories Cam replied. "Oh Yes, Owls at night obviously and couldn't do much about them. The cats usually several at a time and just when you were trying to get to sleep or way too early in the morning to be woken up. Apart from bad language at them, we'd throw buckets of water near them to chase them away. But were told never to hit the cats as they caught the rats and mice. They were talking to each other?" though grinning at that thought he asked seriously. "So that came across as an SOS?"

With a chuckle John answered. "Yes. Mixed in with NightOwl's hoots. Don't think their planet is very quiet at certain times. Strangely enough our Jumper instruments recognised the meowing SOS rather than the owl hoots, and insisted we answer it in a way I've never seen or felt before. And, from that SOS Rodney gave U Sang his name. I'm glad to say U Sang usually gives a growl or purr when he talks. When we got on board their craft they were running out of energy and air. What we didn't understand then was that NightOwl was using her life energy to keep them both alive. All we saw was a tawny coloured owl perched on the energy unit and a semi conscious humanoid purple striped feline at the controls. As you can imagine seeing them and immediately hearing the cat's purring whisper through his translator, that came out in Ancient, explaining they meant no harm and to touch him so he could explain, before he zonked out completely, was totally unbelievable."

Seeing Cam's knowing smile and was obviously suppressing a laugh, John shrugged his shoulders, grinned back then admitted with a sigh. "Yeah, did it because I knew I could, and the moment needed it ... and hang the consequences. I could not let them die. And. Just like your SG1, I have a good back up team."

Acknowledging Cam's nod of agreement, John carried on. "So, while my team looked on I touched his fur, and suddenly found myself on an amazing planet with dragons and other feline/humanoid creatures, with his purrs and her owl hoots now translated into my language in my head. I found out the planet was dying and that was why they were crossing the sea of space. Then I had, what they called later, a flash vision of how the pair came out of hyperspace blind because of a fault in their craft, hit a meteor and needed rescuing immediately or would die.

Coming out of the mind link, which only took a couple minutes in our time but felt longer when in it, I knew we could save them by towing their strange green spaceship here and have them in the jumper with us. Also they and their kind will never harm us because we saved their lives. Now Atlantis has more power we hope to send a message beacon back to their planet saying they are safe, and we think we can help with the evacuation of their planet when the time comes.

Mind links are the way the dragon kind and feline kind communicate as their translators can not cope with dragon/owl speak. Though both are telepathic they don't use that skill unless given permission, and U Sang had sensed not every human mind can cope with it, that was the reason I was targeted rather than the others on the team. We've managed to feed some of NightOwl's calls into the City's computers and Rodney is sure he can make a translator programme given time, till then U Sang translates for us and NightOwl continues to recover."

Glancing across to Sam and U Sang, Cam said softly in a amazement. "So they could be anywhere in their minds and not realise time was passing… that is a scary thought… does everything feel solid?

"Definitely scary and everything does feels so real it takes a while to register you are back in the world you live in. I expect they are where ever they feel most comfortable." Seeing Daniel had been on the edge of his group and listening in John added. "A bit like your experience in the place we've called the mind room, I suspect."

Daniel shrugged his shoulders in agreement, then feeling relief someone else could voice what he'd experienced, sighed and admitted. "Yes, I could see the golden lift and arm that could connect it to the containers in the walls, and yet there was Jon and Jack with a campfire and bushes nearby. Jack got the entity out of me. ..."

John butted in with a smile but a serious tone. "A lot to get used to, and there is nothing solid left behind to convince anyone outside the experience, what exactly happened, and you have to trust that they believe you. We've got a computer record of the link between the towers so we know a forcefield was protecting something. Could have been yours, Jon's and The General's mind energy, or just the signal to make sure the computers were linked and could deal with the download correctly without any kind of interruption, and the rest was something your mind made up to put you at your ease. Who knows, it is going to be interesting to compare notes with the others once everything clams down. One thing for sure we do know something happened to all three. Going back to U Sang, in his humanoid form he can sense an amazing range of things going on around him and natural aliments. Knew what was wrong with their craft and how we can put it right, that is going to take time. NightOwl's other form is a dragon..

Cam butted in "We saw that as she protected U Sang as they crashed through the forcefield the energy blow back produced. Then she did a tumbling display of flashing between dragon to owl complete with yellow flame and a stink of rotten eggs as she tried to stop and keep in one form."

With a chuckle John butted in. "NightOwl will be so embarrassed by that display. It's probably the first time she's been fully charged or even over charged since we picked them up. As I said she gave nearly all her life energy keeping them alive, she's U Sang's family mentor and companion so that is her job really. So during the day she's resting in sunlight on one of the piers and taking the sun's energy, then in the evening she flies out and comes back in her tawny owl form. Her flame should be red and gold apparently when she has enough energy to produce it. That over load must have given her the right fuel for gold or yellow, we were hoping to introduce her to the mainland when she's strong enough to gather strontium, which helps her give the red flame and doesn't take up some of the energy she needs to keep her form. We did a flyby of the planet and found the mineral near some mines, so just have to get permission for her to gather it, which will give her the right exercise or get the locals to do it. That of course takes time as they've never seen a dragon before."

Trying to keep his tone casual Cam butted in. "Doubt it will help that those two stormed through the infirmary in their owl and large purple cat form then flipped into black dragon and black cat form, to fly and jump into the blue flashing energy barrier across the archway and cancel it out rescue us."

John sighed realising what an amazing sight that must have been, then nodded muttering under his breath. "Yep. That should break the ice one way or the other." and stifled the smile that matched Cam's, before turning to Daniel and continuing. "While you are here or if those two are still here when you come back for your proper visit, you and U Sang should get together and chat about the Ancients. He knows their history before the great battle and you've known them since they ascended. For now though, I think Vala could do with your company, and I need to bring Cam up to speed on a couple of matters."

Knowing that was his dismissal, and feeling the ripples of excitement about learning new things about the Ancients from U Sang, as well as the fact John hadn't treated him like an outcast. He had understood his difficulty about that 'mind room' experience, Daniel nodded and started to make his way back to Vala's side, via the food table. As he moved he casually glanced over at Sam and U Sang, and noted their total stillness … then spotted a slight twitch in U Sang's fur ... a slight ripple in the stripes that another casual observer might miss. The others had missed as they were still chatting, so grabbed a plate then started to casually fill it, silently reckoning Sam would be hungry and what better way of showing his support for her, for Jack as well. He needed to chat with them, let them know he understood the honour they'd shown him and he was sorry for his mistake, even if he didn't know how he made it or had known the consequences. And if he presented her with the food she needed, she couldn't be angry with him … could she? … After all she'd spent quality in Jack's mind, probably at the cabin if John's account was anything to go by. So she would know everything would be all right, especially with the Nox coming. They had brought SG1 back to life, after all...

oxoxo oxoxo – Meanwhile in Jack's mind.

Feeling content but puzzled now she had finished, Sam carefully stretched her arms and wriggled her shoulders while making sure she didn't dislodge her laptop as she sat cross legged on the grass by the side of the cabin's lake, and looked up at Jack. He was back in his favourite deck chair and fishing rod in it's stand close to hand, watching her. She knew the earlier idea of sitting on the sofa together had been fun, but that was their city life. This, was in some ways their natural positions in the short stay they'd managed here before she'd gone to Atlantis … Jack fishing while she filled her laptop with her ideas, or long walks together before chilling out by the lake and cooking by the fire … few but precious memories. When wet outside they'd be in front of the log fire and when away from him but still on earth she'd shoot off emails to him, and get short answers back. So the laptop was their link to each other, but here in his mind she … they didn't need it, but he'd given it to her and couldn't help asking. "So, why am I typing all our ideas for the waterfall and life into this email to myself in your mind? And couldn't stop her smile as it sounded so odd.

Jack sighed and smiled, making sure his thoughts didn't wash out everything, he loved that puzzled look of hers, knew the answer was just out of reach to her, mainly because she didn't want to think it rather than over thinking the subject. Her mind was brilliant but sometimes needed a prod, and one she wouldn't like. But seeing in the distance, camouflaged by the trees he'd set around them, NightOwl and U Sang were getting fidgety, he knew the time had come when he would have to make her face the fact she wouldn't like. Truth he didn't either. But they were going to have to separate … he could not keep this link up forever ... she would need all her concentration and he needed to be sheltered from her anger. Then said gently but firmly. "So when you are back in the real world and you need to recall our ideas, you can look at the computer or an email and it will come back to you. Each folder with an idea and instructions."

"But you are coming back with me. …. You promised." Sam answered just as firmly, as all the fears of losing him completely or him being trapped in Atlantis mind room came back to her. They'd discussed all the ways this could pan out and the only one she wanted was him back to who he was and by her side. The Nox would do it and then … she would fight the President if need be, but she was not going to leave Jack's side again.

Understanding and feeling her deeper thoughts, Jack butted in. "I know Sam, and I will always be with you no matter what happens."

"Jack no. You promised." Sam jumped in trying hard not to plead.

Jack sighed again, trying hard to reign in his own emotions so they would not flood her mind as well as his own and trap them both in this world timeless forever, and said. "Sam, I trust you and love you. When Cam and his group arrives you must go with U Sang and cut the link with me so you can give everything your full concentration." Feeling her wavering he added gently. "This is not our final goodbye. NightOwl will still be with me and be my link to you via U Sang. You are in command of Atlantis and all her guests, and don't need me listening to every word you say or think."

"I might need your help." Sam butted in gently, already knowing what he said was true, but not liking it.

"I'll be seconds away. U Sang will not leave your side while our link is cut, we both know that."

Sam smiled in spite of her fears, then added gently. "So I can get angry at Daniel."

"Forcryingoutloud Sam!" Jack exclaimed before chuckling and adding. "Wouldn't expect anything else from you. He's lied to you … to everyone. Whether he understood what was going on or not he has to face those consequences and see what it has done to us all. We will not leave him behind, but he has to stand on his own merit from now on, whether that is with just Vala or with Stargate Command or both. We know he'll feel guilty and try and hide it in his usual manner …" then with a sigh added. "We are tied to him, our chosen brother and sort of warrior."

Sam laughed knowing his last words were true, no matter what happened they seemed to come together at the end of it all. Then noticing Jack's attention had been caught by something in the woods on the edge of the clearing, she glanced that way and became serious, especially as she heard a gentle owl hoot with an echo of a gentle purr in her mind, and saw a flash of purple in the woods. Glancing back at Jack, she knew he knew but voiced it softly anyway. "NightOwl and U Sang wants to join us. I'm guessing Cam and the others have joined us in the Gate room and they are all waiting for the Nox to arrive. So I will have to leave you."

Jack nodded, then said softly in to the air. "We welcome you back NightOwl and U Sang of the dragon planet, and hope you are both rested."

Listening to his greeting Sam watched in amazement as the familiar tawny coloured NightOwl flew out of the woods then settled on the log, while U Sang in two graceful lopes covered the ground then sat beside the same log and immediately purred. "Lady Samantha and Master Jack thank you for your greeting. We are well rested and are sorry to disturb you. Master Cameron has returned with his group and needs Lady Samantha's attention, as will the Nox when they arrive. I believe they are entering this galaxy so Lady Samantha will not have long to sort out any feelings of anger between your SG1 family before they arrive.

We must be a united family when we meet them and to do this Lady Samantha it would be wise for us to shield Master Jack by letting NightOwl be our link to him." then heading off the objection he could feel coming from her, U Sang quickly added. "We will link back to them as soon as the Nox have agreed to help so we can explain what is needed or take advice from Master Jack."

With a sigh and realising her laptop had disappeared and she was already standing by the log with U Sang, Sam knew she had no choice. She knew she had to go, and if she insisted on the link with Jack staying, it might weaken him and she didn't want that. Checking that all their gifts to him were still firmly in place, she smiled noting the fish were ready to be cooked, and guessed he wouldn't want fish for a long time after this. Glancing at him and allowing her feelings of respect and love to show in her eyes rather than flood her completely, she kept eye contact with him and said firmly but softly. "Behave and hold to our promise."

Feeling the strength she always gave him in that look, Jack gave his own back to her as he used their catch phrase. "Always and forever." then added. "Now go. NightOwl and I have lots to talk about and not much time if U Sang is right."

Sam gave a gentle laugh, knowing their true feelings were still and always would be joined, and felt herself gently glide away with U Sang by her side. Then with the white mind mist gently gathering around them, she watched Jack and NightOwl who was flicking into the small dragon form she knew Jack liked, get smaller before disappearing completely, and knew she'd been ever so gently kicked out of Jack's mind and his link was gone.

Immediately starting to feel the loneliness of being without him, Sam became aware of the sounds of Atlantis and a gentle murmuring of people in the Gate room. Also realised she was still sitting on the cold hard stairs and looking into U Sang's eyes, that her hands were resting gently on either side of his neck and top of his shoulder as they had been in the beginning of this session. Then hearing his gentle reassuring purr within her mind, she knew she didn't want it to stop, because when it did she would be really on her own. With that thought anger started to bubble through her and her thoughts rushed on … All highlighting the main facts … That Jack would be on his own in that timeless void with his mind understanding all sides of the problem, and how it would finally end if the Nox could not produce the miracle they hoped for. And all of that interwind with their memories of their short time at the cabin ... real, hoped for and from their mind link as well as past memories. All of it using up his body's energy that Atlantis was trying to build up, so he could age correctly and wake up again. … Most of all, it need not have happened ...

And was interrupted by U Sang's purring statement "NightOwl is with him and I will still be with you Lady Samantha." within her mind rather than through his translator, that wouldn't work till he gave it the right thought command. U Sang knew she needed this moment of just the two of them so she could recover from the loss of her life mate's link and get used to and understand her own thoughts again. Then he would gently withdraw his link with her, but would be close by and would take control of the situation if the need arose.

Moments later knowing she had to move before her legs would be too stiff for her to get up properly, Sam knew she would have to break the link with U Sang as well. She stroked his head and gently thanked him through their link for his understand and strength and was rewarded by his gentle purr again and a ripple of energy both mental and physical … and became herself again … the leader of Atlantis and of Jack's fate.

Feeling strength under her hands as she moved them slightly away from U Sang, Sam realised it was his forcefield and she could use it to steady herself as she got up. So, in one reasonably graceful movement U Sang stood up from his sitting position and moving backwards therefore giving her space to stand up, which she did. With his forcefield packed within his fur again and staying on all fours, U Sang used his eyes, ears and other unique sense to check out the area as he started to prowl in a wide half circle around Sam. Giving off the signals of a large feline of the jungle who could and would fight to the death to protect his charge … the one he was walking round.

Not realising she was giving off the same kind of message that 'she was in command and not to be messed with', Sam started to walk within U Sang's half circle and then full circle, to get the stiffness and chill from sitting on the stairs out of her system. She also noted where everyone was as they all looked back at her and U Sang. In doing so she immediately registered that the strange timelessness of the mind link had gone, and time had passed on Atlantis. The officer for the night shift was at his station and the others had not retired for the night.

Knowing she wouldn't have left if she had been in either John's or Richard's shoes, Sam watched the only person moving start walking down the stairs towards her. Noted his intent gaze on her as he carried a plate of food, and reckoned though he would never admit it, Daniel had taken on board at least one of Jack's lessons over the years. And was not surprised hearing Teal'c's calm rumble of advice. "DoctorJackson I do not believe that is a wise course of action at this time." and knew it wouldn't been taken, as Daniel could never seem to learn that lesson, and watched the Jaffa warrior start to follow him, which made the others do the same.

If anger hadn't started bubbling within her, Sam would have smiled at the bits of short sharp comments between Cam and John, or Vala's louder heartfelt sigh of "Oh forgoodnesssake Daniel. Cam will chuck you out Gate for this." even quipped a short sharp one back at her friend. Instead, and without breaking eye contact with the man, Sam moved further away from the bottom of the stairs, remembering Jack's words to her, brought back by Vala's exclamation making the silence in her mind even more painful. She didn't want to end up under a heap of bodies and a tipped up plate of food should the others catch up with Daniel, even try to stop him though no one was running after her friend. She also knew it would give U Sang more room to act should he want to intervene. A meowing growl and/or a well aimed leap would be enough to stop or bring the man down.

Daniel, on the other hand ignored the warning and just kept his mind on his goal, getting down the stairs with the food on the plate, and talking to Sam and Jack before the others caught up with him. It wasn't lost on him that Jack had taught him how to get ahead of everyone else, in fact everything was so much clear now, especially about Jack himself, and reckoned the fact U Sang had not leaped on him or Sam ordered the security guards to stop him - this meeting was already sanctioned. Probably through that mind link with Jack. After all, his friend knew and understood just how determined two very bright people could be, that was why as leader of their team, he'd given them that extra inch regarding orders all these years. Reaching the bottom of the stairs successfully and noting Sam had moved away from him without breaking eye contact he carried on walking slowly towards her. He really didn't want to trip up now, did he.

Now U Sang was started prowling in a circle around both of them, his tail swishing side to side and his purple stripes were rippling with every stride as he watched what was happening. He was timing his prowl so he was near the bottom of the stairs and Master Daniel could still see and hear him, he did not want to make this human jump, but wanted to stop the others before they stepped onto the landing area. And stopped, raised his head glancing in the group's direction and eyed them, then growled out through his translator so everyone could understand and hear. "Ladies and Masters, U Sang asks you not to interfere. This meeting is needed. Master Jack is no longer with Lady Samantha and will not be till the time is right to do so, or they are required to say their final goodbyes. I am linked with NightOwl who is with Master Jack so he is not alone in his mind as we wait for the Nox to arrive. They have entered this Galaxy. So time for anger will be short and must be aired so we can meet them as a family in peace with it's self."

The group on the stairs and Daniel stopped in their tracks, everyone feeling shivers running down their spines at U Sang's commanding statement, and their attention was brought back sharply to the action by Sam's quiet short commanding, "Well!" as she stared at Daniel and waited for an answer.

Those who knew Sam as their friend and or fellow or commanding officer, had learnt she was one for short and quiet words, rather than ranting and yelling in these demanding situations. And her single word and tone told them, not only was Daniel in a lot of trouble, but they should stay silent and keep out of it unless ordered otherwise.

Managing to keep the plate of food steady and in front of him, while feeling the anger in that word and seeing it in her eyes, which seemed to be the darkest blue he'd ever seen them, Daniel lost the thread of what he'd planned to say, and what came out was in a rush. "Thought you'd want food. I sorry for all this, I really don't know when or how it started or it was in me, no one will believe me..

Not wanting his excuses, Sam cut him off. "Well. Now you know what you put Jack through in the past in Washington when he had to explain what could not been seen or heard. The difference is we understand the situation, even if we don't trust your words at the moment. Looks like you've broken one promise already by speaking to me, so you've got to work on that trust issue a lot harder. Or that 'what I do is right and why should I listen to anyone else' attitude you keep digging up needs to disappear completely."

"Sam.." Daniel tried to butt in to reassure her things would be all right and he really did understand.

Not having any of it Sam cut him off sharply. "No. Daniel. Your apologies and reassurances are worthless. The Nox brought us back to life, but what we asking them to do for Jack is totally different. Nor do we know whether the Oranggezzes have survived.."

"Who are they?" Daniel butted in, not recognising the name.

Sam huffed angrily. "You didn't bother to listen to what was going on around you when you met them. They are the people of the planet you started the self destruct on, and Jack hopefully stopped it. It's the translation of their Ancient name and one they allowed Jack the honour of using. Yes I've blown up a star and lived with it's consequences, but that was to prevent an evil. You were going to do it to feed evil that would have destroyed the whole universe. Now you will have to face up to what you have done. They didn't deserve what ever trauma you've put them through nor does Jack.

If you had listened to Jack's requests for help and friendship regarding Jon instead of lying to him this could have been avoided. You now know his past but don't you dare ever speak of it. He's helped you become stronger and better over years but you've thrown that back in his face in spades. When you first met him you gave him the opening he needed to face life rather than the death he contemplated, and save the people on Abydos and lead to our SG1 family being formed. Now, you've left him no choice but to consider the option of going back into the mind room and never coming out. Atlantis can not sustain his body and his mind for long even after the three downloads have been taken from it. If the Nox can not regenerate his body to the right age in time, we both know he will do whatever it takes to protect his family. One that is global rather than just SG1 because it covers all the secret facilities and people under his command as well as Atlantis. So yes he will go into that mind room and live in Atlantis to keep us safe rather than die with his body."

Seeing Daniel start to try and butt in again, Sam shook her head, she needed to vent her anger and bring it back to some kind of quietness as Jack had wanted her to do, and do it before the Nox arrived, so added. "No Daniel, you can not just turn the page of the mission report and look at the next one, and ignore the consequences. Don't forget I know what it is like to be a voice in the computer, I was trapped and he freed me. But no one would be able to fee him or give us the life we planned … hoped for… I want to see him beside me, not key in words so I can hear his voice or see words on the screen. There are no words for his pain, he would be trapped there for as long as Atlantis functions.

I know you are going to say this will never happen, but it could. And, you know as well as I do we have to plan for all eventualities … so we've been doing just that. I will live the life he wants me too and before my death I will join him in the mind room, because I will not let him do what he will have to do, alone. Sometime in the future and it could be very far in the future he … we will make sure this City is empty of life and with the self destruct on, fly her into the sun where ever we are to make sure he gets the peace he … we deserve.

With pain and determination rippling through her Sam took a breath, noting Daniel was shocked and knew the others would be as well, and shook her head to clear her mood. She'd noted U Sang was prowling round and heard his gentle purr, which was not translated or in her mind, and knew it was his gentle reminder that time was short. She needed to bring this to a close, let Daniel mull things over so they could talk later …what ever happened ... and with a shrug of her shoulders said in a firm but gentler tone. "In our mind link we not only made plans for the Waterfall site, he also told me about the small Asgard ship on another planet that is waiting for you and Vala, should you want a family home and transport, even suggested a crew who would support you as well as the necessary instructions."

Seeing the surprise on his face then the slight nod of understanding, and ignoring the huge grin on Vala's face and her gasp, Sam carried on. "He would have told you earlier but you never gave him the chance, he cares for you Daniel and understands your insecurities, but trust has been dented for all of us because of what has happened. He also knows that if you are to have the love and life you deserve, you need that secure base, and the ship will hopefully provide that, and Vala knows there will always be a home on earth for her. You've done it in the past with SG1 around you, you've now got to do it with Vala and find the strength we've given you to conquer that need of yours to be right all the time. Not only that but see other people as your equal rather than ones to be ignored."

With his mind in a spin and understanding that no one had or would leave him behind rippling through it, Daniel couldn't find the words he needed. Which gave U Sang, the time he needed to come to a stop beside Sam, and with a nod to her, purred through his translator, loud enough for all to hear. "Lady Samantha, the Nox are within hailing distance. I respectfully suggest you should open the verbal channel first as this City is in the forcefield of invisibility, and the Nox are answering our call for help."

Sam immediately nodded her acceptance, then glanced at Colonel Shepard who was still with the group on the stairs and gave a slight nod, then turned her attention to the Officer of the night watch at the computers and commanded. "Open the hailing channel and Colonel Shepard will make the call."

That was the point when Daniel said quietly "Sam, food." knowing she was indeed hungry.

In spite of the added tension going through her, Sam smiled, knew her friend didn't miss a trick and it was the right time to start healing the gulf between them as Jack wanted to happen, and she was hungry, her stomach had just rumbled, and of course Daniel had heard it. She also saw he'd chosen her favourites, including cake so she took a small piece saying quietly to him. "This is not over Daniel by any means. You've got a lot to prove with actions not just words. But for now we concentrate of doing what we need to make sure Jack comes back to us, and you stay in the background with Vala."

Daniel nodded, still getting his head round Jack had given him a spaceship and the fact his life line was going to be Vala and not SG1 or possibly earth even, and knew he could do it… wanted it. Also, knowing his words wouldn't mean much, but he needed to say it, added with true penitence. "I know it will take time, and thank you Sam." then asked "Do you want any more food?" As he wasn't sure Sam would want to walk around with a plate of food in her hand, or someone beside her with a plate of food.

Sam had taken a couple of bites of the cake, made sure they were small enough for her to speak over if needed. And shook her head in 'No' to Daniel, as she'd just noticed the Officer of the watch look up from the control computer in alarm.

Sam nodded at the Officer to go ahead, so he called back to her. "Ma'am, we are locked out of the Gate completely, for all incoming and out going use. The codes were entered correctly both times."

Watching John quicken his pace Sam felt alarm race through her, she knew Atlantis had locked them out of the other computers, but they'd used the link to earth earlier, so why couldn't they use it now. The others, except Rodney, quietly joined her on alert and ready to give any support she might need. Rodney staying quiet, for once, followed John knowing his expertise might be needed...

Arriving at the desk John checked the procedure through with the Officer, knowing his stronger Gene gave him better access than anyone else, and was shocked at what he found. Then feeling Rodney coming up beside him looked across at Sam and the others, and announced. "Ma'am. General O'Neill has locked the Gate down for all incoming and outgoing use. But we can use the local ship to ship communication as it doesn't need the Gate to be opened. It was upgraded when SG1 and the General came through the Gate."

"Do it. Colonel." Sam ordered. Then quietly, as though she could still ask him, voiced the questions that were running through her mind. "Why would you do that Jack? You know the Nox are coming to help, so why lock them and us out, and not tell me when I was with you." And could not come up with the answer, nor did anyone else put in their suggestions, even U Sang, who'd come to a halt beside her, was careful when he purred his gentle. "I am unable to ask NightOwl that question at the moment. But from our history of them and your knowledge of them, the Nox have their own transport beams Lady Samantha, so nothing is lost."

Realising U Sang had a point, Sam was trying hard to resist the temptation to touch his coat to get reassurance and hopefully sneak a quick word with Jack. And, had her attention drawn back to the computer station by the announcement being called out in the usual calm and authoritative manner. "This is Colonel John Shepard of Atlantis City. We are unable to open our Stargate for your arrival and ask for a verbal audience with Lya of the Nox to discuss her entry into the City."

The reply over the speaker was immediate, clear, calm and soothing. "Colonel John Shepard of Atlantis City. This is Lya of the Nox. We can give you visual and verbal communication without using your Stargate or you needing to lower your protective forcefield, and will do so. Please make sure no one is standing in front of your Gate of Space travel. Also I request immediate audience with Colonel Samantha Carter O'Neill before we use our own travel beam to enter to your City and Gate room."

As soon as Lya finished talking a ripple of green and brown forcefield curtain appeared just in front of the empty Stargate, reaching up to the ceiling and down to the floor. In seconds it smoothed out into a screen that showed a room full of the Nox families. Males and females, children through to the oldest generations of adults. The children wearing woodland clothes coloured in various shades of blues, yellows, whites and reds, mixed in with the greens and browns as though representing the flowers of the woods. While the adults and babies wore colours of various browns of wood and greens of leaves. All of them blending together giving the impression of a bright Spring or Summer woodland rather than the Autumnal or winter colours SG1 had seen Lya and her family in before.

Sam grinned at the use of her full title as very few knew it even on Atlantis, and proved Lya had really kept Jack company in the mind room, not that she doubted it, it was just nice to know. And taking in amazing the scene before her recognised some of the others grouped around the Nox lady. Watching them Sam saw Lya's look of serenity change instantly to shock through to a huge grin of excitement accompanying an exclamation as she turned to Opher, one of the oldest Nox. "Father! By the forces of life. The Felines! They survived the great battle! We can meet their younger generation and honour our old friends memories. It is good we saved General O'Neill's family when we did." Without waiting for any reply from Opher, Lya turned to the other two Nox beside her, and carried on in the same manner. "Anteaus and Nafrayu start gathering the families together so they will be ready to come through our gate." then turning back to Opher added. "will you come..."

With a slightly tearful smile Opher butted in. "Lya be calm, I will join the others at the right time. First you must greet the younger generation of the Felines and the companion I can sense is in a mind link with him. Also inform Colonel Samantha Carter O'Neill of news her life mate requested in your mind link with him. Then we will see if we can perform the life cycle ceremony to bring strength and mind together again." Then turning his attention to the group in the Gate room he added with a gracious nod. "One of the Felines and unseen companion within. I am Opher, one of the old ones of the Nox and would like to greet you in the manner you would accept."

With his purple stripes rippling with colour showing U Sang's excitement, he ducked his head in honour as he started to purr his greeting through his translator. "Honourable Master Opher, Honourable Lady Lya and the large Nox family with you. I am very honoured to meet you all. I am addressed by the name this family have given me when my companion dragon of the dragon planet, and myself were recently rescued from death, while we were crossing the dark sea of space in search of a new home for both our kind." then with another nod added. "I am U Sang, and my companion who is linked with my mind, as she is with Master Jack while he sleeps, is NightOwl. Lady Samantha has joined this link and will be again if or when necessary. Unfortunately Atlantis is unable to give him the strength he needs to wake whole in mind and body, and he is the one who has locked the gate to all. We do not understand this reason as he knows we have asked for your help."

Totally serious now Opher and Lya looked at each other, then with a nod, Lya faced the group in the Gate room and started. "Colonel Samantha …

With a smile Sam butted in. "Lady Lya, titles take too long, so Sam or Samantha will be fine, and thank you for answering our call for help."

Lya nodded, then in a gentle family tone rather than spokesperson of the Nox tone, added. "I agree, and it is an honour to help a close friend. ... So. Samantha, I request everyone step away from the landing area so the Nox family you see behind me, can come through as I explain the procedure needed, and pass on the news we have gathered."

As the family behind her started to form into chattering groups, and those on Atlantis started moved towards the stairs away from the landing area, Lya carried on. "I informed Master Jack when we linked minds I would give news of the Oranggezze via Atlantis, instead I decided we should see this City and meet with him in person. So we were as he would say 'near the neighbourhood' when we received your message and it was no trouble at all."

With that Lya smiled and raised her arms from her sides, making a circle and clapped her hands as they came together above her head. Instantly the rippling curtain seemed to thicken slightly and had a shade of blue in it. Then, she stepped forward and instantly walked out of the 'curtain' into the Gate room, and without breaking her stride carried on walking towards Sam, who was with the others at the bottom of the stairs.

As she did so, Lya wholeheartedly apologized. "I am sorry Samantha I left your betrothed as I did. His mind link was so strong it gave no indication that his body had lost so much life force in saving his friend and the universe from the evil entity. I saw him as an adult, and his mind was full of the three downloads he had received and needed to pass on to Atlantis before their energy totally consumed him. The ones from the Ancients that had been sealed by the Asgard's 'download wall' to protect his mind and mask the fact it was there, were both leaking into his mind and life force. The last one was from the Oranggezze, which was automatically picked up when he entered the library on their planet and was safely sealed, but needed to be delivered to the correct container for safe keeping. They are sorry they didn't realise the ill mannered overbearing behaviour Master Daniel showed, was the result of the entity, and not part of his natural being they thought it was. If they had realised his problem they would have dealt with the matter immediately, and Master Jack would not have been allowed to go into the library as he did. They knew he was a powerful Ancient as soon as he arrived so kept him at a safe distance from that building, and didn't realise he had full knowledge of the power within him."

Sam bit back a smile, as she'd heard a snort in the group behind her, guessing it came from Cam and the quiet guilty huff was from Daniel, and said. "Daniel can be single minded when caught up in his work, so the entity would have used that personality trait to get what it wanted. And we apologise for any damage caused to them and their planet." then added with the seriousness it deserved. "We believe he is clear now, and understands he has to avoid such obsessive behaviour in the future." and paused to watch with some fascination as the Nox family groups were 'stepping' through the curtain with the same ease Lya did, and were chatting amongst themselves as they formed little groups on the landing area, before returning her attention to Lya and ask. "Are the Oranggezze safe, and can you help Master Jack?" and doing the nod of respect as she used the people's name.

With a nod of understanding Lya smiled and explained. "They are safe Samantha, and will be able to contact earth again in 50 of your earth years when the Gates will be in line again. It was a very close call for them and the planets around them, the device that keeps them safe will need to be repaired. As their information download was gathered by Master Jack when he confronted Master Daniel, a new one will be made in line with their traditions. Both devices will be guarded in a different way so it can never happen again. Now that contact has been made without the aid of the Gate, the Nox family will help them in any way possible." Glancing at the group behind Sam, Lya continued. "As I stand here, I sense Master Daniel is whole again and in very good health." Then bringing her attention back the one in command of the City, added with a knowing smile. "As are you Samantha."

Realising the full depth of Lya words, Sam smiled as she nodded her agreement, then added. "I have just been in a private mind link with Jack and we talked of our future together, and that of our friends." then admitted quietly. "Also he healed me before he entered the mind room and then met you."

"That is good." Lya commented remembering her own mind link with Jack. Still feeling excited at being so close to the new generation of her long lost friends and knowing she couldn't touch him, she recalled U Sang's words, before clarifying them as she glanced at him. "Master Jack's body is sleeping and NightOwl keeps his mind company as he waits for us." Seeing U Sang's graceful nod she added. "That is good. I look forward to meeting NightOwl of the dragons in the flesh, when we make our circle round Master Jack. But first, is the room large enough to take all our family gathering here? As you can see we need male and female of each age group to give him the right strength for renewing life that has passed and that of the future life span, till it comes it's natural end."

Trying hard to keep his own excitement and awe of these graceful and powerful people contained, U Sang managed to start purring his answer, which was automatically translated for all to hear. "Lady Lya, I am in my second life. In my first life I had the great honour of looking after the history of the Felines race before and after the great battle. It mentions the close friendship with the Nox and the loss they felt as they realised they could not make contact with them again, or the ones they had to leave behind. I am glad we can now meet up and understand the importance as well as the difficulties of this unique situation.

Unfortunately the room is too small for such a gathering and it would be dangerous for his health to bring Master Jack to this landing area at the present time. With your permission, if it would be possible for the life ceremony to be done here, I would humbly offer to use my mind link with Master Jack to channel the life force to him, or to his room where two of your family could continue the link to Master Jack's body and mind.

Master Daniel was not in the special rooms when he visited Master Jack and Jon in the mind room, so it is possible therefore, this beautiful City might be able to channel the combined mind and energy link in some way. My family mentor and companion NightOwl is an energy dragon, and like myself can channel mental and life energy if required, and is willing to do so. Not only do we owe the humans our lives, we consider them, and this family in particular, close friends, and also know they are important for the future of this universe.

Lady Cassandra and Master Jon are in the special room with NightOwl and Master Jack. Master Jon has also been healed by the mind room, both are very important to Master Jack."

Lya nodded her acceptance of his words, then pondering them while glancing round the Gate room as the family of her people were still gathering in their groups, she marvelled at the whole situation, and was glad this particular Feline was with them. Coming to her decision she stepped away from the group and started to walk in a small circle, …. carrying on she then raised her voice slightly, but keeping it gentle, called out. "City of Atlantis. Lya of the Nox calls out to your programme of instructions, and asks two questions that needs immediate answers. Is there is a channel by which, mind and life energy can safely run to the sleeping child General Jack O'Neill from this Gate room? If so will you open it for us?"

There was stunned tense silence as Lya stopped walking her circle and looked over to Colonel Shepard, who'd stayed by the computers, for the answer.

Feeling the familiar 'Ancient' thought ripple through his mind, that jogged him out of shock, John looked down at the screen expecting an answer and found it totally blank. With disappointment racing through him he looked over at Lya and shook his head, not trusting his voice.

Pondering what she knew of the Ancients, their 'thought' machines and all the possibilities, Lya walked in the small circle again. Then she stopped, lifted her head and gently but firmly called out. "City of Atlantis. Hear me and take note. Though you feel General Jack O'Neill's Ancient inheritance is stronger than before that is because he is child size. He has his adult mind and can not survive long within you as he is. Nor can he ascend to the Ancients who were with you in the past. He is not of their kind, and needs our help to return to his true life. He needs his earth family, those who now live within you, and those on his home planet Earth in the other Galaxy, and they all need him.

To do this, we must find a route for our mind and life energy to travel from this Gate room to General Jack O'Neill's room. The connection you feel with him will not be lost, he has not failed you or his people in the past so trust him and us."

Hardly breathing, everyone watched and waited as the seconds built up, and the full implications of her words ran through their minds. Then Rodney, looking over John's shoulder at the computer screen, gave his friend a nudge of excitement as the screen flickered and a digram flashed across it, then it came to size and stayed steady so they could read it.

With understanding, excitement and relief rushing through him, John managed to call out, calmly. "Wording at the top of the screen states. 'Lya of the Nox. The link is possible. Success can not be guaranteed as action has not been sanctioned before. If unsuccessful and at your command this City will safe guard General Jack O'Neill's mind till a replacement body can be found or to stay within for the use of future generations of his family kind."

Realising the implications of it John looked at the group, could see they also understood it, then turned back to the screen and added. "Underneath is a digram of the City with two routes in gold. One goes up to the ceiling and along the passageways keeping it high to avoid people and would go through the infirmary in that manner. The other is via the computers here and comes up just outside his room, with a dotted line carrying on into it, either to the bed or the computer unit on the wall, does not indicate which. That one would be the best as we wouldn't need to lock down the corridors in the City or disturb the patients in the infirmary. I suspect most will be sleeping by now. The instructions are for either route. They are, the mind and energy circle needs to be in the centre of the landing area with the head of it facing the computers. No one must leave the circle once it has started, when the time comes it will know which one and how it is to be done." Looking back up at the group he asked. "Does that make sense?"

Lya smiled as she nodded her understanding, and that it made sense. Then, knowing it was not her place to make the final decision she glanced at Sam, then quietly, but so it carried to the others nearby, said. "Your command Samantha."

Feeling that ripple of emotional turmoil of being the one to give that final command as well as the fact is could be a life or death decision. Sam knew she didn't really have a choice, she couldn't let Jack stay in that no man's land he was in at the moment. Taking a breath and gathering strength from Lya's calmness and confidence, Sam looked across at John and ordered calmly. "Key in the command for that route, then mentally thank the City for the information." then turning her attention back to Lya, asked. "How long will this take?"

But at that moment, as if proving the point that no matter who they were, it is never easy to keep a lot of children or family groups in one place or quiet for any length of time. The wave of gentle general chatter had got louder, and some of the children were scampering from one group to another so adding to it, and distracted Lya. Turning towards the growing disturbance she gently but firmly said. "Adults, calm them or they will either run out of energy, or give the wrong kind when it is needed."

As if from out of nowhere, as the watchers had not seen any bags with the groups, the adults instantly produced pan pipes and other small instruments including lyres, and started to play tunes. Light and restful background music … sounding like a mixture of rippling water with a gentle wind blowing through the trees, reminding Sam of the wooded river walks at cabin and made her smile.

The buzz of chatter and giggles quietened, and the children started to settle in their groups or walked to the new group when needed instead of running. Some groups were now making flower and leaf chains, those again seemed to appear out of nowhere. Others were playing hand games, and Sam thought she spotted wooden balls running on string between handles … was that other one a yoyo and turned her attention back to Lya for the answer to her original question.

Satisfied that the Nox family were settling as required, Lya turned back to Sam explaining. "The children are making energy flower and leaf chains along with flower petals for use later on and to calm themselves. If we are successful, the ceremony to transfer energy will take time and Master Jack will have to live through his past as each age is …

In spite of the calmness around her, Sam immediately snapped in. "He can't live his life again, it has not been easy the first time round."

Seeing pain in Sam's words was mirrored in the expressions and silent head shakes of Daniel and Teal'c, and not knowing his past but remembering her catch up chat with Master Jack in the mind room, Lya nodded and said softly, "It is true, he has been through many deaths and horrors in his adult life and should not relive them."

Pausing for thought … pondering through ideas while hearing Opher's words of wisdom whispered in her mind, Lya suddenly realised why the Gate had been locked down and smiled. Then quickly mentally taking the idea step by step with Opher's link, she couldn't help adding, out loud, in quiet amazement. "He is very clever and realised a possibility. A back up plan for us. We can not fail him Father, come and join us, especially as we will need your strength and guidance at the head of the Circle." before turning her full attention outwards, and immediately asking. "Samantha, has Master Jack travelled through this Gate as his true adult self or as the Ancient child? And where did he start from?"

Feeling a familiar flip of anticipation overcoming her dread, Sam couldn't understand the reason for the questions, but knowing the answers would come later she pondered them, then said. "Several times in the past as an adult, usually with other people rather than a solo trips. This morning he was a child and came through with Teal'c, behind the rest of the group so he would not travel with Daniel, though no one including himself understood why at the time. All journeys start from Star Gate Command on earth and usually stop at Midway, which is our halfway resting house in space between the gates, we set that up to make the journey less stressful and to conserve power. This time because they had enough power from earth's Gate they came straight through missing out everything till this Gate on Atlantis. Why is that important?"

As Opher silently joined them, Lya nodded with a smile, then knowing it was rude to do it mentally only, vocalized her thoughts. "Father of the Nox, I believe Master Jack's idea may work. Though we will need earth's help and use the stop you call Midway to finalize it. He will not be able to stand the long journey to earth and back. We must not open this gate until he commands it either in person or through thought." Then turning her full attention back to Sam, asked. "Is earth safe now? I know Master Jack was worried by it all."

Still unable to see Jack's plan, but knowing the dots were being connected and she would understand it eventually, Sam said. "Earth is safe and perpetrators were human and are being brought to justice by our people and a special team Jack worked with in our capital City. We've contacted General Landry through a verbal and visual link Jack apparently set up on his way here, and been in communication with our spaceships who acted as our link before this morning and they've confirmed earth was safe. We have kept the situation regarding Master Jack off our records on for his safety. Colonel Lou Ferretti who is a trusted colleague of Jack's and knows about the situation would be able to get to Midway if Jack needs someone there. But I don't understand how that will help."

Teal'c suddenly realising a possibility admitted quietly. "Master Opher and Lady Lya I was trapped within the Gate once and only survived because Samantha stopped anyone from using it till the right time. Master Jack is not trapped in the gate only in his young body, but perhaps it is a similar situation."

Lya smiled and with a nod of understanding, then explained. "Master Teal'c I am glad you are well, though different you are correct. When we travel through the Gate we are turned into particles and some are left behind within the Gate and stay in their own group, build up with each journey. We hope these particles from past travels will recognise him and be added to the complete life energy our circle will give Master Jack. This will age him correctly and much faster than the other way if it takes the two journeys.

We had planned to deal with each age separately, to give his mind and body time to adjust. This way we will mix the family ages and use the SG1 family as quarter links in the chain to give him the correct balance of energy. We will need Colonel John Shepard in the circle as he has the right Ancient Gene and is well respected by Master Jack. Samantha and myself will be in Master Jack's room with NightOwl to make sure the energy link joins safely and to explain the situation. We will leave this area as you start the Life Circle. When he has received the energy..." Lya stopped for a moment pondering the problem.

Then turning to U Sang, she asked. "Would NightOwl be able to fly Master Jack to the Gate, he will be too full of energy to travel by any other means and will take too long for him to walk to the Gate."

U Sang purred his answer immediately. "She can shield energy from herself and others in the area when she is in her tawny or pure white owl form, her black dragon form gathers the energy. She can any carry weight in it's proper form and travel as fast as light without harm to either of them or others. But she will leave a trail of light as she does, it is not blinding but it would be wise to clear the corridors and warn the people in the infirmary that this might happen. There are no archways giving direct access to the outside in that room. She will fly above head height to gain the best advantage and use the outside archways if that is the quickest and safest route. She will know which is the best route as she has an amazing sense time, direction and distance. She will enter this room via the upper corridor and fly straight to the Gate so this area should be cleared at the first opportunity."

Totally amazed at the picture in her mind Sam couldn't help smiling as she commented. "So NightOwl flies in with Jack on her back. The Gate opens to his order as he enters and he's tipped in and comes out at Midway, where Lou is there to make sure everything is okay. Then opens the Gate back here to Atlantis makes sure he enters okay and Jack then walks out complete." then add with a chuckle. "Probably as though nothing had happened."

Along with the gentle relieved chorus of agreement, most notable to Sam were Teal'c's quiet "Indeed" along with U Sang's purring, that stayed as a purr rather than any words through his translator.

Lya gave a nod of agreement, but then with a gentle seriousness added. "Samantha, his friend Lou Ferretti waiting at Midway should be warned, Master Jack is likely to be a child and the ageing will not be complete until the second journey. I hasten to add this will be the first time of trying it in this manner. The life circle and cycle is usually called upon when a member of the family has died before their time, it is the matching of body and mind that is the problem here. From your link with him we know his mind is awake and being a gatherer of information will need to do it's job and pass on the information to those around it. As he has done in the past with his team family that has now grown into many groups on earth and friends in the great sea of space. If his mind is isolated from his body because it has failed he will be able to carry on with his Atlantis family till we can find a better answer."

Sam nodded her understanding, then knowing she was the one who had to give the final go ahead, added. "Jack and I understand the situation, and we both thank you for your help. In our link he stated he might have to stay in the City and I promised him he would not be alone or stay there for eternity. He never mention the other possibility and I can understand why he didn't. I believe we should contact earth immediately and allow him to take that chance, it is what he has done in the past and survived. We have arranged that any calls from Atlantis are not being registered or recorded to protect the SG1 family."

With a nod of agreement, Lya added. "Now that our families are settled we will contact earth via our own screen to make sure nothing disturbs your Gate. It will register as though it is coming from Atlantis and it will be visual and audible both ways when it is safe to do so."

Now the decision had been made, Sam felt the adrenalin boast that often came when SG1 made a leap into the dark and nodded her agreement. Then feeling the group shadow her movements joined Lya as they all walked towards the blue screen for the meeting with SGC, and though he wasn't touching her Sam was glad she could hear U Sang's gentle reassuring purring beside her. The music tone down to keep in the background and the family groups automatically shifted to get a good view of this new place they were being connected with.

The Nox's screen shimmered and for the moment all they could hear was the normal noises of SGC Gate room at a quiet time, rather than full action of the Gate being used or a troubled situation. U Sang, Lya and Opher used their extra strong senses and not feeling any trouble nodded silent agreement, and Lya sent up the silent signal to their own control room to go ahead. And said quietly, "We will be connected now."

The screen shimmered again and glancing down at the computer for confirmation and getting it, John glanced at Sam and getting her nod, he announced clearly. "This is Colonel John Shepard and Colonel Samantha Carter requesting an urgent audience with General Landry, Walter."

There was only a moment's quiet before everyone heard Walter's clear and calm reply. "Security measures have been taken and General Landry is in the Gate room with personnel who are cleared for an audience. You can proceed with visual and audio if you wish."

This time the screen in Atlantis City flashed blue as it connected with Star Gate Command and dropped it's other curtain in front of earth's Gate. As it cleared to a transparent link between the two, both sides could not only see each other but felt as though they could just step into each other's gate room, without any space between them.

Sam couldn't help smiling at the shocked expressions on the watchers faces, and registered who they were. While on the other side the shocked group marvelled at the crowd they were seeing and the fact this was even possible.

General Landry smiled as he greeted to them. "Colonel, I'm guessing this new screen is because the Nox have arrive. Lya of the Nox and family thank you for answering our call so quickly."

As Sam and Lya nodded their greeting and agreement. Hank went on. "As you can see I have company, Tobias and his daughter Emily were just going to beam up to see Earth from Space and a quick tour of the space ship as things have quietened down now."

"More like to stop him poking his nose in things he shouldn't, he's getting bored and fidgety now he's been restricted to the Mountain, having eaten lead again." Gibbs happily butted in.

Though still getting his head round what he was seeing it didn't stop, Tobias quipping back instantly. "Wasn't my fault there was a gun fight when I went to the bank.

"Never learnt how to duck." Gibbs quipped back, knowing this was helping his friend to adjust to the situation. He'd had the advantage of his boomerang trips between SGC, Odyssey landing in different places in DC as well as reading up about the life of SG1.

"It didn't hit anything bad was a straight through and through. Don't know what the fuss is about or why I have to have this dam sling." Tobias grumbled, getting used to see the amazing sight of a purple stripped cat and loads of people in strange clothing and hairdos ... was that really bits of stick in her hair?

"Dad stop it! You've only just got over those other injuries." Emily jumped in, then looking at the screen into Atlantis added. "As Jack's not with you Sam I'm guessing he's still sleeping." then could not resist smiling as some of the children waved at her and others with open curiosity were pointed at her hair or miming the length to their companions.

Feeling their actions behind her Lya turned to them and said gently. "Children behave, you have seen others with beautiful and longer hair than our energy gathers, which stays in this style and length when mature so can be ignored." then turning back to the others adding. "I apologise on behalf of our family Lady Emily and your hair is very beautiful and an unusual colour. In spite of the argument between the two men with you I believe they are good friends and care for each other, as well as yourself. I can feel you too have a very strong Ancient Gene and look forward to seeing you in the future, when you take Master Jack's place and become Earth's ambassador to those who travel the seas of space."

Knowing the relationship between Gibbs and Tobias, Sam couldn't help smiling at their banter, or the fact Emily's beautiful long red hair had drawn the Nox's attention. Wasn't at all surprised at Emily's reaction to the situation, she was strong minded and quick witted, and hadn't decided what her future was going to be, now she found there was whole new universe out there. At Lya's words and the men's shocked expressions, Sam spotted Gibbs's flash of shock then hint of a smile, and nearly giggled, but knowing she couldn't carry on this conversation in this manner as things were too serious, she took a breath and admitted. "Yes he is still sleeping Emily, and that is why we need your help Hank."

With a sigh and hoping things were not too bad, Hank commanded. "Better give me the headlines Sam."

"In brief, Sir. Lya's people will perform the circle of life to give Jack the strength he needs to wake up properly as an adult. To complete it we need to send Jack through the Gate to Midway and then back again with only a short break in between. He needs people at Midway to dial the gate back to Atlantis and possibly help him back through it. He may still be a child size, full of the life energy he will need to bring him to adulthood on the second trip. As Colonel Lou Ferretti was with him I believe he and Agent Gibbs should be there to help him if he needs it." And smiled at the Colonel's silent greeting and nod of agreement, and Gibbs's slight flicker of shock as he registered the implications now he knew more about the Stargate programme and then nod of acceptance.

"To verbally reinforce the order Sam?" Hank butted in with a smile.

As Sam nodded her agreement, Lya gently, but with the dignity of a leader of her people, butted in. "General Hank Landry, if I may ask some questions?"

"Certainly, Lya of the Nox we welcome your words." Hank answered with great respect, after all it wasn't every day you spoke to someone who could telepathically travel space on a whim, and hoped she or the others with her were not reading their minds… not that he was thinking bad thoughts, it was just unnerving.

Sensing their unease Lya gave a slight nod, then carried on in her gentle regal manner. "Thank you." then addressed the person she wanted information from. "Colonel Lou Ferretti, did you physically touch Master Jack in his child state, either accidentally or at his request?"

Though he'd seen some sights in his time with SGC Lou felt amazed at what he was seeing and who they were, he also knew what he'd kept out of his very confidential briefing with General Landry was going come up bit him big time. Taking a breath to calm himself and get into the right frame of mind, Lou thought back and remembering the General as the child automatically used the terms everyone else was, and admitted. "Yes Master Jack held my hand, being child size it was natural for me to hold his hand at some point. When I did he quietly told me not to tell and to give my wife and children an extra hug that evening, he had been glowing slightly at the time. I felt a warm tingle ripple through me, but didn't comment on it to Jon or Teal'c who were close by but looking in the wrong direction, and the glowing disappeared. It only took seconds and I didn't feel any different afterwards and he immediately let go and scampered back to Teal'c's side.

Though I didn't expect anything, I gave my wife and family that extra hug on my return home and felt a warm tingle ripple through me and knew it had gone to them. It was not till the morning I realised the difference in us. Jack knew my wife and I have been concerned about our youngest one's health, sudden weight loss and listlessness that doctors couldn't track down had been going on for weeks. That morning and ever since she is bouncing around in full health and energy. In fact we all are. The doctors have put it down to a virus infection so stopped the other tests they had planned. Jack had said it was for past and future friendship and would not affect anyone else or show up on any medical check." Coming to attention and glancing at his chief officer he added. "Sir, in view of the circumstances I decided not to mention it, and no one raised any questions at my medical as the results were normal." And was relieved to see understanding nods from General Landry and Teal'c, as well as a smile from Sam.

Lya smiled as she could sense the trust and caring relationship between the two officers and for Master Jack, then said. "It is good that the gift of Ancient healing energy was given to you and your family, the strength of it will last through many generations to come. Now, because of this gift you will be able to physically help Master Jack back through the Gate should he be sleeping as he comes through or too weak to manage the return action by himself. You will not take any Ancient healing energy from him when you place him back into the Gate for his trip back to Atlantis. It does not matter what state he is in, you must not travel with him or after him. He must travel alone and the Gate must close down before it is used again. We will be waiting for him and can attend his needs. Then you return to earth and we will contact you regarding his progress at the right time. General Landry, it would be advisable that Master Jack spends time in quiet surroundings after this act for a full recovery. He mentioned an Ancient Waterfall site that sounds ideal for his future years."

General Landry couldn't help his slight smile at Lya's last comment, he knew Jack was against returning to DC as it would be impossible to gain everyone's trust again, the officers in Homeworld would be alright it was the people outside would be the problem, and now he had the backing of the Nox. And nodded his acceptance, wondering just what he was going to say to the President when he called for an update.

Looking at the rest of the group while sensing their aura, Lya could see pain coming from two them, one was obvious, because his arm was being supported in a sling and the injury was in the early stages of healing. The other's one injuries were not so obvious, and had healed as best they could but would still give pain through out his life. Knew this one would be with Master Jack at Midway and came to her decision saying. "I humbly ask that in spite of his injuries, Master Tobias joins the group and touches Master Jack should he request it. Master Jack may be glowing with Ancient energy and need to slow the process down a bit, he will know what is the right thing to do. To do this he could give Master Gibbs and Master Tobias either full health or help to heal their wounds."

Ignoring the hiss and near silent mutterings from Tobias to a silent Gibbs, - Tobias was still getting his head round the fact there were aliens in Space and everything went with it… including the fuss they made when he got shot and that included Emily's reaction. Hadn't a clue what this amazing lady was talking about or what Midway was. He'd just been getting his head round the idea of going into space and seeing the iconic view of earth today, before this mind boggling lot dropped in on him. -

And, the gentle but firm quick head slap that Tobias got from Gibbs to shut him up. Emily smiled as her Dad frowned as he shut up, but his eyes were bright with mischief of a comeback rather than anger as he glared back at Gibbs. Yeah, he might be slighter and shorter than his friend, but he knew how to niggle at the man when safe to do so… and after being let into the biggest secret ever there could be a lot more to play with. Months or years of secrets and what about that boat in the basement that was now in SGC's lower basement.

Of course, Sam's own smile wasn't far behind Emily's … she'd heard from Jack about men's relationship, had seen it in action when she'd visited Gibbs's house when Emily had been there as well. And couldn't help wondering what the two men would make of Midway, after all it was just a large box that housed two Gates at opposite ends of a landing area and staff, with nothing but stars and space around it.

Having stayed silent and majestic throughout, Lya sensed the time was right to bring things back to the matter on hand, and with a slight nod to get their attention, announced gently but firmly. "General Landry, I must warn you the outcome of using the Gate of Space travel in this way is unknown, but does make sense for this case. Should we find Master Jack remains in his present state, and providing his mind and body can be saved by a different method, I know he will not want to leave his life mate Lady Samantha, friends or earth unprotected by going into the sleep of death with his body. We wish him to have a long and fruitful life with her and his friends, so we will not fail in coming to a good answer in this matter. We will be in contact with Master Jack through our mind links and act on his will accordingly.

If there is no change after we have used the Gate of Space travel, we will perform the older and longer ritual of life strength when a person has died before their time. This will enable his body to grow to the right strength and age for his active mind to join it in perfect harmony. At the present time it is taking most of the life energy this City of Atlantis can give it, so his body's strength and ageing is not increasing as it should. To prevent this from carrying on during the older ritual Master Jack's child body will carry on sleeping as his mind re-enters what you have named the mind room's storage area and go into one of the protected cabinets, while we perform all stages of the ritual to grow his body, and give it the strength it needs to carry his life into the future.

This will take days possibly weeks as our Nox families will need breaks, especially as we will have given our strength in the first ritual. We will also call on our other Nox families to come to our aid to shorten the time Master Jack's mind is in the cabinets. His mind will be aware of this procedure and as now have no sense of time passing, just the need to stay in an active state to stay alive. But unlike at the present time, his mind links with U Sang, NightOwl or Lady Samantha his life mate that keeps him company as well as a link to us, will be severed, so he will be on his own till our Nox family give Atlantis the order for the cabinet and room to be opened, so he can rejoin his aged and stronger body. At this time we will only find out if this longer procedure has worked.

We hope by using the Gate of Space travel, it will only take the time to travel to your Midway station and back to Atlantis with the necessary short break between the Gate being closed and opened again for Master Jack to regain all that was lost. I would also add, Master Jack is the one who has guided us to this suggestion while in his present state, so I believe it will work and proves he does not wish to leave us."

General Landry sighed at the explanation and it's implications … they could lose the General … nothing was cut and dried … and it would have been easier if his mind was the same age as his body, but if that had been the case he would have died on the hillside. They just had to hope it would work, that Jack's skill at getting out of trouble was still with him, and couldn't help a slight twitch of a smile realising Jack and Sam had at last been married. That would make him use everything he could to come back to them safe and well, and guessed it was on a need to know basis from the very top. The few knew the better, and realised Daniel, Teal'c and the president which ever one it was knew about it. Been there. So, there was a lot of anguish floating around them all, and quickly turned his attention back to Sam, leader of Atlantis and wife to Jack, and knew she had had a good teacher, and teams with her to help her stay strong.

Seeing her slight smile and nod, Hank knew she was trusting these amazing alien friends around her as well as Jack in what ever state he was in ... so let his encouragement show in his eyes and nodded back, before giving his attention back to include the whole group and adding. "Thank you for your explanation and I agree with your decisions and hope for the best out come. Sam, congratulations, I realise it was a 'need to know' decision and will celebrate when you and Jack get back home. In fact I hope to have good news for you both regarding the waterfall site by then. Before you go though, I need a word with Doctor Jackson."

Sam looked at Daniel and nodded her permission for him to take part. With some trepidation Daniel made sure he was in view as he said. "General." and waited.

General Landry's expression and voice were stern, so gave an extra edge to his words as he said his piece. "Doctor Jackson, I get the feeling you have a lot of bridges to mend with your friends and colleagues, so I will keep this short. Firstly, when you and Vala come back to earth, you will go through all the hoops we can think of to make sure you are really you and your hitch-hiker is not just sleeping. You will live and work with an escort till we are satisfied of the truth and you will not do it again. Also, you will obey and respect the officers around you, and tone down that obsessive streak of yours, so you actually listen to what is being said to you and act on it.

Secondly, I want to reassure Vala that the home Jack promised her with or without you Daniel, is there for as long as she needs it. We have checked out the property he had in mind and as it ticks all our security boxes, we hope you have better success than Teal'c's first try of making a home on earth. You will have to live by our life codes, and stay the right side of the law at all times. Also it will suit both of you should you wish to make that type commitment. I am not sure if Jack was just doodling for fun on the note at the time he made it, but he's drawn a spacecraft next to the words back yard. On inspection, the yard is secluded and large enough, as is the area of land next to it for a small craft. Of course, we will need to know if that is a real suggestion and not just a doodle because he needed a distraction at the time of writing the note. The craft will have to be legally obtained and registered at SGC."

Needing to stay serious, Hank tried to ignore Vala's very bright smile and energetic nods, which he assumed was of acceptance of the plan, rather than anticipating nipping out and grabbing the nearest space craft. Reckoned he'd have to watch the pair of them very closely, and that was why Jack had put them in a SGC monitored area rather than town, then continued. "Thirdly. That rowdy crowd outside your apartment Daniel, you complained about on the day after Jack arrived at SGC. They were his 'off the record deep cover' security agents, preventing an attempt to either kill or kidnap you, and were apprehending the villains. As the kidnap attempt on Jack failed and his cover blown, his friendship with you was exposed so they needed another lever to get to him. Agent Gibbs has now dealt with them, and the security team will continue to watch your apartment. No doubt he would have explained it all if you had given him the chance. He never left you Daniel, so think on that when you see him. Sam as you know, your family are safe and well, they send their regards and look forward to seeing you soon.

Seeing her nod of thanks, Hank in a gentler tone, remembering the child Jack, and the adult one he counted as a good colleague and friend … and one he really didn't want to lose, finished. "As soon as you leave us I will inform my group where they are going and what they have to do. I hope next time you call, Jack will be with you, the right size and age."

"General Landry." Lya got in before Sam could say anything. "Thank you for your understanding and we hope all will go well. We do not wish to lose the man and family we respect and consider friends, and has reunited us with the new generation of the feline family, we believed lost to all during the great war." then with a regal nod and a slight smile, she added. "I look forward to meeting our new ambassador again in the near future, and showing her our beautiful home planet Gaia, so she can see how other space families live in this universe."

As soon as Lya finished, U Sang's gentle purred statement came over his translator. "I too hope we will have the opportunity to meet Lady Emily and her earth family again. Perhaps at Master Jack's cabin so you may meet NightOwl, my companion dragon. For now, we wish you well in your learning and travels Lady Emily." and gave a regal nod as a bow of honour to them.

As Emily beamed at the offer and Tobias was silently horrified at the idea, Jethro teased quietly. "Longer commute than the one you were thinking for her. Eh Tobias." In the days he'd been around SGC he'd learnt so much, and knew nothing would stop her starting her own journey, now she'd got a glimpse of the truth. She had the same strong will her mother had ... and stopped his thoughts going any further down that sad road.

Sam couldn't help smiling at them and the idea of them all meeting up at the cabin or having Emily on Atlantis for a visit, and turned serious saying. "General. Lya will communicate with you rather than us using our Gate, and it will come through Walter's system and be untraceable."

"We will keep the Gate room clear of non essential personnel, and Walter or a senior officer will be waiting." General Landry confirmed, and then watched at the blue screen wink out, leaving them alone and looking at the silent and empty Stargate, while having that flickering moment's thought … did it really happen?

That is till Emily let out her excited laugh, and then with bright eyes full of excitement and determination she turned to General Landry, rather than her father, and asked. "Could I go with them? Are they really that powerful?" She knew this was her calling, and way more interesting than anything she'd come across when thinking of her future.

Understanding her excitement regarding all this, General Landry glanced at Tobias, who was still looking too shocked to take in his daughter's determination, and noticed Gibbs give a slight smile so knew he'd taken all this on board and nodded back to him, then admitted. "They are that powerful, she can open and shut the Gate by thought alone, and are a very advanced and peaceful race. When General O'Neill as Colonel lead SG1, they saved a member of Lya's family when they visited their home planet Gaia. SG1 were killed by an ambush of Jaffa warriors in the process, Lya and her family brought them back to life, and sent both parties on their way. From that meeting a bond of trust has grown up between them.

Regarding your future, we have civilians and officers working here so you can choose any skill you would like to work with between missions. We can discuss ideas while we wait for your father and Gibbs to come back from Midway. For now we will have to cancel trip to see earth from Space." then raising his voice slightly he ordered. "Walter!"

At his station, Walter immediately replied. "Ready to dial Midway on your order. Sir. And will inform them security cameras should be closed down and they are to take orders from Colonel Ferretti."

With a smile General Landry finished his order. "Do so." Then turning to other men he added. "Take the 'go' bags you had packed for the short trip with you in case it is a long stay, their timing is different from ours, food and clothes will be available if necessary. Lou knows the men there and the routine. For your information Midway is a box in Space so you'll have a view of dark space and stars all around you. Must admit it would have been nicer if your first trip through the Gate was to Alpha site as planned as it would be to land, but you learn to be flexible very quickly at this job. Emily will stay in the Mountain till you come back so you know she is safe."

Then their attention was taken by Walter calling out the steps as the clonks and the orange lights round the rim came on as the Gate came to life, and lastly the blue plume and woosh of the wormhole filling the hole in the middle as the connection was made. Hank still felt that thrill as he saw it come to life and that dread of sending teams through to the unknown … this time he knew who would be the other side, but also the dangers. Could feel the awe and shock reactions of the three beside him and noted Lou's smile and nod … He was ready to lead the two men through, and glancing back at the Gate Hank realised they could see Midway's landing area, though the others could not see them and heard Walter's confirmation. "Sir, they do not have vision or sound and we only have vision. The General didn't travel through it so it might not be upgraded till we've connected both ways."

"Right Walter, tell them who is going through." Hank ordered, then turning to the two men knowing Colonel Ferretti would be ready, added. "Walk slowly into the ring and you will come out the other side in the same manner. Think of going down in a very fast lift. They know you've not travelled this way before so will help you on other side. Colonel the usual word on arrival."

Amazed by it all and still full of excitement, Emily quickly gave her father and Gibbs hugs and laughed at her father's reaction as they started to walk towards the Gate… they could see the room, it couldn't be that far, could it?

Tobias had his bag on his uninjured shoulder and walking by Gibbs was muttering his nerves away, couldn't really believe it was happening. He'd been shot and whisked away to the mountain then met these strange people and was now walking towards as room in space. Would become atoms… didn't quite know whether to be reassured by Gibbs's silence or earlier tease, and voiced out loud to him. "If I get any of your atoms and my injury is on the wrong side I'm suing. Right"

His own nerves covered, as he looked on it as just another special ops operation to get some one back, Gibbs laughed saying. "They wouldn't dream of changing over, mind you you could do with a little more height on the matter."

At his friend's glare, Gibbs finished. "They been through this hundreds of times. Think of it as a deep cover operation, after all you'll never be able to brag about to anyone except family and that will be where no one can hear you. Otherwise it will be the men with white coats and padded cell."

As they got within touch distance of the great ring Colonel Lou Ferretti command firmly. "Take a breath in and out and step into the ring. Do it now."

They did, and as they disappeared the screen rippled, spun to blue, then turned back to showing the empty landing area at Midway.

Standing beside General Landry, and feeling the loss of the two men she loved, Emily looked up too, then asked quietly. "They will come back won't they?"

Hank could understand her fears knowing her history and age, and gently reassured her. "Yes they will. In a moment you will see them arrive and then the Gate will shut down. After that we can show you the information we have on the Nox and discuss ideas for your future if you like."

Eventually they saw the screen ripple again and then Colonel Ferretti walk onto the landing area followed by Tobias and Gibbs … both took a moment to get their land legs back again but stayed up right.

Walter's voice rang out. "Verbal confirmation they have arrived safely. Gate shutting down Sir."

As the middle winked out, Hank put his arm round Emily and said quietly. "Now we wait."
