Chapter 62

Alright, alright your reviews pulled me back in again. I just can't leave you all hanging. I feel like I may not be as in tune with the characters as I once was, so I hope this chapter still turned out okay. Please please give me some feedback! Your reviews are the only thing keeping me going :) Also, if you have any one-shot requests for either story, let me know. I'll be catching up on those next!

Anyways, back to Storybrooke! Enjoy :)

Hanna appeared in the living room just in time for dinner. Now, she was going to have to get through an entire evening without letting her parents know about what she saw in Emma's basement.

"Any luck over there, tonight?" David asked.

Hanna sat down at the table. "Nope."

Snow set a plate of food in front of Hanna and sat down next to her. "Emma didn't say anything?"

Hanna looked up at her mom, then over to her dad who just sat down across from her. They were both looking at each other. They were doing that thing where they talk to each other without actually saying anything. That made Hanna nervous. Did they know something? Hanna couldn't tell. She was sticking to her story, and if they thought she was lying they could come right out and say so.

"She pretty much just yelled at me the whole time," Hanna shrugged. That wasn't a lie. Emma did yell a lot. "She isn't going to tell me anything. I don't even know why I bother trying." Hanna sighed and looked down.

"It's okay kiddo." David reached out and took Hanna's hand into his. "We'll fix this."

"We always do," Snow assured her.

"I hope so," Hanna gave them a small smile and started to eat her dinner. She still wasn't sure how they were going to fix this mess with Emma, but Hanna was happy they stopped asking questions.

The next morning Hanna sat down for breakfast and felt her phone vibrate. She looked down to see a message from Emma. She quickly opened the text and read that Emma wanted her to meet her at the stables. Hanna looked up and saw that her mom was busy folding laundry, and her dad was in the other room trying to get Neal down for his morning nap. Hanna was glad that it was Saturday, and she didn't have school to worry about, but what was she going to tell her mom? Emma specifically told her that she couldn't tell anyone that she was helping her. Hanna figured she could just tell her mom she was going to the stables or out for a walk. Technically, she wouldn't be lying, but somehow her mom could always see around those little lies too. Helping Emma was going to be harder than she thought. Hanna knew she didn't have a choice though. She had to figure out what Emma was up to. Hanna stood up from the table and went to put on her coat. "Hey Mom, I'm going to go for a walk and maybe go to the stables for a little bit. Is that okay?"

"Sure sweetie," Snow said with a smile. "Just as soon as you finish your breakfast."

"I'm not that hungry."

"Sit down and eat. Then you may go."

"Mom, come on…"

"Hanna I'm not going to argue with you about it. Finish your food, then meet us at the station after your walk." Snow picked up the folded laundry and went in to her bedroom.

Hanna contemplated for a moment about just leaving, but thought better of it. That would for sure get her into trouble. She'd never be allowed to go off on her own and may never find out what Emma is up to.

Hanna inhaled her breakfast and rushed out the door just in case her mom changed her mind. Hanna was surprised that her mom didn't even ask one question about what she would be doing. That seemed a little odd, but Hanna just brushed it off and ran down that stairs. Once she got outside, she remembered she was good at magic now and poofed herself to the stables.

Hanna looked around for her sister, but didn't see her anywhere. "Emma?" Hanna whispered. "Em, where are…"

"Follow me."

Hanna jumped at the voice that came from behind. She turned and ran after Emma, who was already walking towards the field. "Don't scare me like that."

"Then don't be late next time."

"Late? I only got your text ten minutes ago. I can't just poof to you on a whim ya know."

Emma shrugged. "If you want to help, be quicker."

Hanna rolled her eyes and sighed. "What do you need help with?"

"I need you to get that horse to the pumpkin patch," Emma pointed to the horse grazing in the middle of the field.

"What? Why? Who's horse is this?"

"No questions, remember?"

"Fine, but why don't you just take him there?"

"He won't let me get near him."

Hanna grinned. "He probably senses your evil."

Emma glared back.

"Emma I don't think I can poof a whole horse to the pumpkin patch."

"I guess you'll have to walk him there then."

"Emma I…"

"You want to help or not?" Emma raised her eyebrows at her.

"Okay, I'll do it."

"Good. Once you get him there, just leave and don't tell anybody or…"

"I know, I know you won't let me help you anymore." Hanna walked over to the horse and grabbed his reins. "You know…" Hanna turned towards Emma, but she was already gone. Hanna just shook her head and walked the horse to the pumpkin patch. The whole time wondering just what her sister was up to. Once she put the horse where she was supposed to, Hanna poofed herself to the station.

"Our people want badly to return," Hanna heard Guinevere say just as she arrived. "We must do something to raise their spirits."

"Well you're right," Snow said. "People need hope and as your hosts and leaders of this town it is up to us to provide it."

"Well, what do you have in mind?" Regina asked.

"How about a dance?" Henry offered.

"A dance, huh?" David sat down next to Henry. "Looking for an excuse to ask your girlfriend out on a date?"

"Girlfriend? What girlfriend?" Regina crossed her arms.

Regina was clearly not happy about only now finding out about this, and Henry's cheeks were turning pink. Hanna couldn't help but laugh at this whole scene.

Henry gave Hanna a look and Hanna covered her mouth to keep herself quiet.

"She's not my girlfriend," he insisted.

"Who's not your girlfriend?" Regina demanded.

"I think a dance is exactly what we need," Snow said, trying to shift the attention away from Henry.

"Henry, who's this girlfriend?" Regina asked again.

"Well, if it's dating tips you need, lad, I know my way around women," Killian smirked.

Hanna made a face, "Eww."

"Over your dead body." Regina glared at the pirate.

"Regina! Let's start planning. I think it is time Storybrooke had a ball." Snow took her stepmother by the arm and led her out of the station. Everyone followed behind.

Regina gave Hanna a nudge as they walked down the sidewalk. "Okay, who is this girl?"

Hanna wasn't going to be the one to tell her. Henry would kill her. "Regina I…"

Hanna was saved when Belle ran up to them.

"Belle what is it?" Snow asked.

"It's Rumple," Belle said, trying to catch her breath. "He's missing."

Hanna held her composure, but her stomach was doing flips. She knew exactly where Rumple was or at least where he was the night before. She couldn't say anything though. She promised. Hanna was sure Emma knew by now that Belle discovered her husband was missing. She would have a plan in place.

"Hanna!" Snow said for the third time, trying to get her daughter's attention.

"Huh? What?"

"Has Emma said anything to you about Rumple?" Belle asked.

Hanna shook her head. "No, she hasn't told me anything." Which technically wasn't a lie.

Belle sighed. "I'm going to Emma's. Maybe I can find something there."

"I'll go with you," Killian volunteered.

Regina and Robin went with them, leaving Hanna stuck helping her mom get everything ready for the party. This was the last thing she wanted to be doing right now, but Hanna couldn't think of a way to get out of it. She did send Emma a text to let her know people were headed to her house right now to look for Gold. Hanna didn't get a response, but she knew Emma would have it all under control. Hanna tried not to worry about Emma for the rest of the afternoon as she helped her mom organize everything for the event tonight. That was proving to be quite difficult, but by the time the carnival began, Hanna was able to put Emma aside enough to enjoy the evening.

Hanna was walking around the carnival with Neal showing him all of the lights and balloons. He was starting to get fussy, so Hanna offered to walk him around for awhile so her mom and dad could talk with some friends. The walk seemed to calm him. Hanna decided to try one of the games and ended up winning him a stuffed dragon. By the time they made it to the last booth of the carnival, Hanna looked down and noticed that Neal's thumb managed to find its way into his mouth, and he was fast asleep. Hanna smiled at her baby brother and decided to go back to the picnic tables where their parents were waiting.

As Hanna got closer to the table, she noticed they weren't alone. Arthur and Guinevere joined them. Along with Killian and Belle. Hanna wondered if they found anything at Emma's.

"It can eradicate all dark magic forever," Arthur said.

"What can eradicate all dark magic forever?" Hanna asked.

"Oh there you two are," Snow said with a smile. "How did Neal like his first carnival?"

"He loved it. It really wore him out, see!" Hanna gently lifted him up so her mom could see that he was asleep. "Now what was that about eradicating…"

"Did my little man win himself a dragon?" David asked.

Hanna sighed. "Yeah Dad, he threw the rings onto the bottles all by himself." Hanna looked to Arthur. "Now what were you saying about eradicating dark magic?" Hanna bounced the baby in her arms, waiting for an answer.

"Excalibur," he told her. "When forged with the Dark One dagger, it can eradicate all dark magic."

"That's a good thing, right?" Hanna asked.

Arthur nodded. "Of course, but in the wrong hands it can also destroy all light magic."

"That's their plan…to snuff out the light forever." Killian said.

"What happened in Camelot?" Snow sighed. "How did Emma fall so far?"

"No," Hanna shook her head. "That's not what Emma is doing."

"Do you know something?" Killian asked.

Hanna panicked. Everyone at the table was looking at her now. "Well…no, but…" Hanna sighed. "Emma she…she wouldn't do that. That's not who she is. She…"

"Aye she's the Dark One now. She would…"

"No! You're wrong! She…" Hanna stopped herself. She didn't want to say something she shouldn't. Hanna knew Emma was doing all of this for a reason, but she wasn't allowed to say anything. "I just know Emma is still in there, okay?"

"Has she said something to you?" Killian asked.

"No," Hanna told him.

"Hanna are you sure?" David asked. "You can tell us."

"Dad, I told you. I've tried." Hanna sighed and shook her head. She needed to convince them that she didn't know anything. "I've tried everything I can think of to get her to tell me what happened back in Camelot. She won't though. She…" Hanna rubbed her eyes and managed to get a few tears to fall.

"Okay, okay." David reached out for her hand. "We know you'd tell us if you knew."

Hanna nodded her head and wiped the tears from her cheeks. "I promise would."

"We believe you," Snow said with a smile. "Here, why don't you give me the baby and sit down and try this."

Hanna raised her eyebrows at the plate her mom held out to her. "What is it?"

"It's called a funnel cake. It's sweet, you'll like it!" Hanna shrugged. "Okay." She was glad the questions stopped. She handed Neal to her mom and sat down in between her parents to try this funnel cake. Her mom was right, it was good. Hanna finished off that one and asked her dad to get her another.

Hanna finished the second and looked up to see Henry riding into the carnival on a horse. Hanna recognized that horse. That was the horse Emma made her take to the pumpkin patch this morning. Henry gave the horse to Violet. His "not girlfriend." She looked relieved to have the horse back. Hanna put two and two together. This was all a set up by Emma. She made Violet think she lost her horse, then probably helped Henry find it. Why would Emma do that? Why would she make that poor girl worry all day about her missing horse, just to make Henry look good? That's not like Emma. She wouldn't do that, but that does sound like something the Dark One would do. Hanna stopped herself. Emma was different.

"Well look at that." David gave Hanna a nudge, interrupting her thoughts.

"Huh? What?"

"Looks like Henry got his date after all."

"Oh yeah…I guess he did."

After awhile, Snow decided to take Neal home and put him to bed for the night. David stayed at the carnival with Hanna. They played a few games and tried more carnival food. Hanna liked the cotton candy the best.
As they were leaving, Hanna spotted Henry saying goodnight to Violet. He was about to go back to Regina's. Hanna wanted to hear about how he found Violet's horse and if he knew anything about her and Emma's involvement.

"Dad, can I walk Henry home?"

"You want to hear about that date, huh?"

"Uh yeah, I do," Hanna lied.

"Alright go ahead," David gave her a kiss on the top of her head. "Make sure you're home before 9."

"Okay I will!" Hanna ran off after Henry. "Hey looks like you were the big hero tonight."

Henry shrugged. "I just brought her horse back to her."

"How did she lose him in the first place?"

"She was keeping him at the stables. I guess one of the fences was down and he wondered off."

"Oh," Hanna nodded her head. She didn't remember seeing a fence down, but Emma must have taken care of that little detail. "So, where did you find him?"

"He was at the pumpkin patch. Emma helped me find him, actually. She's still in there somewhere I know it."

"I think so to Henry," Hanna told him with a smile. "Now, tell me more about your date!"

Henry rolled his eyes. "It wasn't a date!"

"Yeah sure, okay. Tell me about your "not date" then." Hanna stole a handful of popcorn from the container in Henry's hand. "Did you kiss her?"

"Hanna…"

"Fine. Did you and Violet enjoy your evening at the carnival together?"

"Yes we did," Henry said.

"Oh come on," Hanna punched him in the arm. "Tell me about it."

"Okay, okay…" Henry told Hanna all about his night with Violet as they continued to walk the rest of the way to Regina's.

"I'm glad you had fun tonight, Henry," Hanna said as the walked through Regina's front door. "Violet seems nice, but I'm going to have to meet her if things between you two get anymore serious."

Hanna looked up when she didn't get a witty remark from Henry. She saw the look on his face and followed his eyes to what he was looking at. Then she saw it…Regina was holding up a dreamcatcher, watching a memory. She watched the scene unfold…it seemed to be from when they were all back in Camelot. Emma was with Violet. Hanna's mouth fell open as she watched Emma rip Violet's heart out. Then Emma told Violet that she needed the tear of a lost first love, Hanna wasn't sure why Emma would need that. She told Violet that she needed her to break Henry's heart.

Henry dropped his popcorn, alerting Regina and Robin of their presence.

Regina turned around and saw the kids.

Hanna turned towards her friend and saw the look in his face. "Henry…" but before Hanna could say anything else, he ran up the stairs to his room.

Hanna looked up at Regina. She could feel the tears in her eyes. "Regina, are you sure that's real? Emma wouldn't…she…"

"She's the Dark One, Hanna. What you just saw was real."

"But I thought if anyone could fight the darkness…" Hanna could feel the tears begin to spill.

"I thought so too." Regina leaned down and wiped the tears from Hanna's cheeks. "We will find a way to save her from all of this."

Hanna nodded her head just as the doorbell rang.

Regina opened the door. "Emma."

"Hello."

Hanna ran to Regina's side as soon as she heard her sister's voice.

"What the hell is going on?" Regina demanded. "What are you doing?"

"I'm here to see Henry."

"You know that's not what I mean. You took our memories and now Gold. What are you trying to do, Emma?"

Hanna tried to wipe the rest of the tears from her eyes as Emma's gaze moved towards her. She didn't want Emma to know she had been crying.

Regina sighed. "There is nothing you can't come back from if you just tell us."

"What I'm doing is my business, but it's for the best. Trust me."

"I was starting to and, like Henry and Hanna, I was seeing the good in you, but I was wrong. I thought you could be different. I though you could escape the darkness. But then you had to go and rip a 13-year-old girl's heart out."

Emma stepped closer. Hanna could tell she was shocked that Regina knew. "What?"

Regina held up the dreamcatcher.

"Now you're breaking and entering?"

"Oh no! You don't get to be self righteous with me. Not after what you've done. Henry saw what you did."

Emma looked down at Hanna, who nodded her head. "He's pretty upset."

"I was trying to make it up to him."

"Make it up to him? By reuniting a girl and her horse? Oh, let me guess. You let the damn thing out in the first place."

Hanna felt a twinge in her stomach as she thought about her role in that.

"It all would have been fine if you could've just helped yourself and stayed out of it. Maybe you're the one causing pain."

"Wow. Listening to you trying to justify everything. If I'm the one on the moral high ground, you've fallen quite a ways Ms. Swan."

"Don't 'Ms Swan' me. We've been through too much. You know I never would have done that to Henry if I didn't have a good reason."

"Good reason? You know, that's exactly what my mother said to justify what she did to Daniel."

"What I did in Camelot, I did to protect Henry."

"She thought she was protecting me too."

"I didn't have a choice."

"There's always a choice, Emma. You've said that to me a thousand times."

"We were running out of time. It was the only way to free Merlin."

"Merlin?" Hanna asked. "Wait. We freed Merlin in Camelot?"

"But if that's true, why are you still the Dark One?" Regina asked.

"This is a waste of time. I want to see my son."

"Well I don't think he wants to see you. Goodbye Ms, Swan." Regina turned to Hanna. "Are you coming back inside?"

Hanna shook her head. "I'm going with Emma."

"I don't know…"

"I'm not going to hurt her," Emma told Regina. "Come on, Han."

"I'm fine, Regina. I promise."

Regina nodded and went back inside.

Emma looked up towards Henry's bedroom. Hanna looked too and could see Henry in the window. He looked mad and shut the curtains the moment he saw them.

"Let's go." Emma waved her hand and poofed them away.

Hanna saw that they were at Emma's house. Hanna turned to her sister. "Emma, what the hell?"

"What?"

"You know I really did believe in you, Emma. I really didn't think the darkness had that strong of a hold on you. So you kidnapped Gold, are hiding a sword in your basement, and let a horse loose to make Henry look good in front of his crush. But this…ripping out Violet's heart? Emma that's crazy!"

"She's fine and the plan worked just like I needed it to."

"The plan to free Merlin?" Hanna waited for an answer, but didn't get one. "Emma, did you free Merlin or not?"

"Yes."

"Well then where is he? Why didn't he get the darkness out of you?"

"Hanna, I can't tell you. Can you just trust me?"

"No, Emma! I can't! You owe me the truth. I've been lying to everyone…Mom, Dad, Henry, Regina, even Belle. She asked me this morning if I knew anything about Gold's disappearance, but I didn't say a thing. I didn't tell Henry that we were the ones who set Violet's horse free, and I didn't say a word about the sword in your secret basement either! I've been lying about everything to everyone just for you and you can't even tell me what's going on!"

"Hanna I never asked you to do any of this! You were the one who wouldn't leave me alone!"

"I can't leave you alone! I made a promise to you! I promised you that I'd help find a way to save you and that's what I'm doing!" "Well, I'm freeing you of your promise! Just let me handle this, okay?"

"No! You're my sister. I won't just leave you. I won't stop trying to help you, so please just tell me something…anything!"

Emma sighed and walked closer to her sister. "Okay, Han. Listen it's complicated, but…" Emma quickly turned and looked towards the door. "Dammit!"

"What is it?" Hanna looked too.

"Mom's here," Emma said just as the doorbell rang.
