Chapter 43 - That's Not What I Meant

Later that night, Kelly's in her room reading a book.

She hears a knock on the door.

"Come in," said Kelly.

Silver pops her head inside.

"Is this a good time?" asked Silver with a weak smile.

"Yeah, sure. What's up?" asked Kelly.

Silver walks in casually.

"Oh, nothing. I just figure we work on the wedding," replied Silver.

"Why?" asked Kelly slowly.

"Oh, I just figure since we've worked so hard on it, we should finish it," replied Silver playfully trying to cheer Kelly up.

"Silver, that's sweet of you but unfortunately, this is not the kind of project I want to finish," replied Kelly.

"I know...I guess if Brandon were here, it would be a different story," said Kelly.

"I don't think that matters anymore," said Kelly.

"Why not? You two will forgive each other eventually. You guys always do," said Silver.

"I don't think it's just that easy anymore," said Kelly.

"What do you mean?" asked Silver.

"Well, I am mad at him for not being here but even if I weren't, I don't think I can marry him anymore," replied Kelly.

"What?" asked Silver shocked by Kelly's answer.

"I don't think we're right for each other anymore," replied Kelly.

"Sure you are. You two are so cute together...in fact, you guys are too cute," smiled Silver.

Kelly chuckles a little.

"I think that's the first time I've seen you laugh in a while," smiled Silver.

"Thanks for that," said Kelly.

"So, why don't you want to marry him anymore?" asked Silver.

"Hand me the box of photos under the bed," replied Kelly.

Silver has a weird look but does what Kelly said.

Silver finds the box of photos that Kelly was looking at before from under the bed and hands it to Kelly.

"Thanks," said Kelly taking the box from Silver.

Kelly puts the box in the middle between herself and Silver. She opens the box cover and immediately goes through the stack of photos.

"What are you looking for?" asked Silver confused.

"I'm looking for...," replied Kelly going through a stack of photos on a fast pace.

"The...this," said Kelly holding up a photo of Brandon and Lauren together for Silver to see.

"Hey, isn't that that Lauren chick?" asked Silver.

"Yup," replied Kelly.

"Poor girl. So tragic," added Silver.

"But what does this have to do with you and Brandon?" asked Silver confused.

"Last night, I couldn't sleep because I kept thinking about this photo...and this one...and this one," replied Kelly showing Silver a series of photos of Brandon and Lauren together.

"Don't tell me that you're jealous...she's dead, Kel," said Silver.

"That's not the point," said Kelly.

"Then what is?" asked Silver.

"It's was their relationship together. It was...," replied Kelly who gets interrupted by Silver.

"Whoa...they were dating?" asked Silver surprised.

"No, I meant their friendship...sorry," replied Kelly.

"Oh," said Silver who is now calm.

"Anyway, their friendship meant so much to Brandon because they had so many things in common. They're both interested in journalism and investigations...and they spent so much time together," explained Kelly.

"So what? You and Brandon have so many things in common too. You guys grew up together. You both went to the same schools, had the same friends; talked about the future when you were in college together. If that's not love, then what is?" asked Silver.

"That's the past. It seems like the only thing we have in common now is Sammy. We both love him and want the best for him...but it's not a reason for us to be together for that," replied Kelly.

"Kel, no offense but I think you're the first person in history to be jealous of a dead person," joked Silver.

"I'm not jealous. I just want us to make the right decision," said Kelly.

"Kel, you wouldn't have agreed to marry him when he proposed to you if you weren't in love," explained Silver.

"It was the heat of the moment...just like all his other proposals to me. It was very romantic...just like all his other proposals. And something always went wrong...just like all this other proposals," said Kelly.

"I'll be surprised if we wouldn't have gotten a divorce if we had gotten married before," added Kelly.

"Kelly, don't say that. Sure marriage is difficult...but that doesn't mean it's not worth doing," said Silver giving Kelly a weak smile.

Kelly stays quiet.

"I got it...why don't you propose to him for a change? It might make things better," asked Silver.

"Sorry, Silver. But I just don't feel like trying this anymore," replied Kelly.

"So you're just gonna give up?" asked Silver giving Kelly a sad look.

"Yeah, I guess so," replied Kelly.

"Well, you can't. You're my role model. How else am I gonna find the perfect guy if you won't give your perfect guy a chance?" asked Silver.

"Silver, you're a bright and intelligent woman. You don't need to follow in my footsteps. In fact, I think you're better off not to," replied Kelly.

Silver looks at Kelly with a sad look.

It's dinner time at Steve and Janet's house. Steve and Janet are talking and laughing along with Madeline. Brandon isn't really joining in the conversation. Instead he stays quiet and looks depressed.

Everyone eventually notices.

"What's the matter, Brandon? You don't like my cooking?" asked Janet trying to get Brandon to talk.

"No, it's delicious. Thanks," replied Brandon who realizes everyone is staring at him.

"I'm just not that hungry," added Brandon.

"Don't worry, Bran. We can go out later and grab some grub elsewhere," said Steve.

Janet looks at him with a mean stare. Steve notices.

"Or we can just stay here and finish this delicious meal that my lovely wife made for us," said Steve realizing Janet wants him to stay home.

"Thanks," said Janet who leans to give him a kiss.

Steve smiles.

"So, tell me the truth; what gives?" asked Janet.

"What?" asked Brandon confused.

"You've been moping around here for the past few days. We just want to know what's wrong," replied Janet.

"Guys, I'm sorry. I just don't wanna talk about it. I'm sorry that I haven't been the perfect houseguest. I promise that I'll leave first thing in the morning," said Brandon.

"Are you going home to see Aunt Kelly?" asked Madeline.

Brandon gives a look to Steve and Janet.

"Don't look at us. We didn't tell her to ask you," defended Steve.

Brandon looks back at Madeline.

"No," replied Brandon to Madeline.

"Oh, that's too bad. I hear Aunt Kelly really misses you," said Madeline giving Brandon a sad face.

"How do you know?" asked Brandon who gives into Madeline's conversation.

"I can sense her feelings," replied Madeline.

"How?" asked Brandon who pretends to be curious.

"It's women's' intuition. You're a guy...you wouldn't understand it," replied Madeline.

"Well I'm afraid you're wrong because I spoke to Aunt Kelly today...and she told me to leave her alone," said Brandon.

Steve and Janet looks at each other with concerning looks.

"Really? She really said that?" asked Madeline.

"Yeah, she did," nodded Brandon.

"Why?" asked Madeline giving Brandon a sad look.

"Probably because of something that I did," replied Brandon.

"What did you do?" asked Madeline.

"I left home," replied Brandon.

"You can go back," said Madeline.

"It's not so easy," said Brandon.

"Did you forget your keys?" joked Madeline.

Brandon smiles and laughs. He looks at Steve.

"She is really too cute to be your daughter," joked Brandon.

"Hey, who do you think she got her humor side from?" defended Steve pointing to himself.

"And who do you think is the one who has to step in when the humor has gone too far?" asked Janet.

"Sweetie, Uncle Brandon probably doesn't want to talk about Aunt Kelly right now," said Janet to Madeline.

"No Janet, really, it's ok," said Brandon.

"Well, are you sorry that you left?" asked Madeline to Brandon.

"I'm starting to," replied Brandon.

"As much as I love having you here, I think it would be best if you go back to Aunt Kelly," said Madeline.

"What if she won't open the door? You know I don't have the key," joked Brandon.

"Aunt Kelly is one of the nicest women I know. She has a very forgiving soul. And if that doesn't work, climb in through the window," smiled Madeline.

They all laugh. Brandon goes and gives Madeline a hug.

Later that evening, Brandon is in the guest room at Steve and Janet's.

He hears a quiet knock on the door.

"Come in," said Brandon.

Steve opens the door and peeks in.

"Hey, you asleep yet?" asked Steve.

"No, come on in," replied Brandon.

Steve comes in. He walks to Brandon.

"What's up?" asked Brandon.

"Hey, I'm sorry for Maddie's questions at dinner," replied Steve.

"No, it's ok. She's a curious kid. She'll make a fine reporter one day," said Brandon.

"I hope she'll have better luck than we did," chucked Steve.

Brandon looks at him and doesn't laugh. Steve realizes that's not funny since Brandon just lost his job.

"Sorry," said Steve.

"It's ok," said Brandon.

"So, what are you gonna do?" asked Steve.

"I dunno...I don't know if I was hiding it well but I really miss them," replied Brandon.

"Well, that's good...then go back," said Steve.

"It's not that easy. I've never seen Kelly so mad and sad at the same time," said Brandon.

"She'll get over it. She loves you," said Steve.

"Remember when we were getting ready for my wedding...I was having second thoughts and you were trying to reassure me that I was making the right decision about marrying Kelly?" asked Brandon.

"Yeah," replied Steve.

"Now all this time has passed, do you still think that we're right for each other?" asked Brandon.

"Of course you are. I've known you guys for so long. And I've never seen the two of you happier than with each other," replied Steve.

"Thanks but maybe I shouldn't be asking you," said Brandon.

Steve looks at Brandon with a disappointed look. Brandon notices.

"Steve, I didn't mean it like that. I'm sorry," defended Brandon.

"Then how did you mean it?" asked Steve.

"I meant it's hard for you to judge our relationship since you live here and we were there," replied Brandon.

"I'm just calling it like I see it," said Steve.

"I don't know why it's so hard. I care about Kelly and Sammy a lot. I know I love them. But the thing with Dylan keeps coming back and forth again," said Brandon.

"Are you saying that you don't wanna be friends with Dylan anymore?" asked Steve.

"No. I'm glad we're all friends. I just don't want to stop thinking that something is eventually gonna happen with Dylan and Kelly," replied Brandon.

"The Brandon, Dylan, Kelly thing was like 14 years ago. I'm sorry, Bran...but if you still can't get over it by now, you might just have to live with it for the rest of your life," said Steve.

"I know that this might not be what you wanna hear but it's probably something you're just gonna have to accept," added Steve.

Brandon looks at Steve with a concerning look.

"You're right," said Brandon.

They look at each other.

Kelly's cellphone rings on the bed. She walks over and picks it up, sees the name on the phone, and answers it.

"Hello Brenda," smiled Kelly.

"Hey Kel," said Brenda.

"What's up?" asked Kelly.

"Oh nothing...I just wanted to check up on you, that's all," replied Brenda.

"Well, I'm fine. How are you?" asked Kelly.

"Good. You certainly sound better. Did you make up with Brandon?" asked Brenda.

"No...in fact, I think I'm moving on from Brandon," replied Kelly.

"Oh...wow, that's unexpected," said Brenda who is a little surprised.

"Well, after thinking about it, I think that I'm probably not right for Brandon anyway," said Kelly.

"Kel, you don't mean that," said Brenda.

"Yes I do...and I know where this is going...so I will save you the trouble by saying that I'm fine and this is what I want," said Kelly.

"Well, ok then. Sounds like you've thought his through," said Brenda.

"Yes, I have," said Kelly.

"Is there somebody else?" asked Brenda.

"No, there is no one else at the moment," replied Kelly.

"You sure it's not Dylan? Because I'll be ok with that," said Brenda.

"No, it's not Dylan. I think it's best if we all should just stay friends," said Kelly.

"Ok. Good. But I am kinda sad how this ended," said Brenda.

"Me too but I'm thinking this is for the best. Me choosing me again," said Kelly.

"Yeah that but I was hoping that I'll get to visit you guys and help prepare for the wedding," said Brenda.

"Oh, there may not be a wedding anymore but you're still welcome to visit," said Kelly.

"Really? You'll be ok with that?" asked Brenda.

"Of course. You're one of my best friends. I would love to see you again," replied Kelly.

"Great," smiled Brenda.

"Under one condition," said Kelly.

"What?" asked Brenda.

"That you won't tell Brandon," replied Kelly.

"Don't worry. I won't," said Brenda.

"Great," said Kelly.

"As long as you don't tell Brandon my little secret," said Brenda.

"Don't worry. I won't," said Kelly.

It is morning and Brandon is asleep. His cell phone rings. He slowly wakes up and opens his eyes. He reaches for his cell phone on the table and answers it.

"Hello?" asked Brandon still a little sleepy.

"Hey Brandon," replied Brenda.

"Bren? What time is it?" asked Brandon.

"It's about noon here. Were you still asleep?" asked Brenda.

"Yeah," replied Brandon.

"Oh, sorry to wake you," said Brenda.

"No problem. What's up?" asked Brandon.

"Nothing, I just wanted to see how you were and if you were ready for me to come out there for a visit," replied Brenda.

"Sure. I'll check with Steve and Janet. But I'm pretty sure they'll be ok with it," said Brandon who is sitting up on the bed.

"Great but I'm actually gonna stop by Kelly's first," said Brenda.

"Oh ok. Just let me know when you're coming down here," said Brandon.

"Well, I hoping that you can pick me up at the airport in L.A.," said Brenda.

"Bren, don't take this the wrong way but that's a long drive. Can't Kelly pick you up?" asked Brandon.

"Yes and she'll be there too," replied Brenda.

"So why do you need me there?" asked Brandon.

"I was hoping that we can all get a bite to eat afterwards," replied Brenda.

"Bren, I know what you're doing and it's not gonna work," said Brandon.

"If it helps, I'm not the only one who wants you there," said Brenda.

"Did she say that?" asked Brandon.

Brenda doesn't answer right away.

"Yes. She said that she misses you and is willing to talk things out," said Brenda.

"She really wants to make things work," added Brenda.

"I dunno. We spoke before. It actually made things worse," said Brandon.

"Brandon, remember who you're talking to. I'm the one who had to listen to you for almost 10 years talking about Kelly," said Brenda.

"Yeah, I thought that annoyed you," said Brandon smiling a little.

"It did...but it doesn't mean that I didn't want you to be happy," said Brenda.

"What are suggesting?" asked Brandon.

"I'd say you show up at the airport and talk with Kelly. You know you want to," replied Brenda.

"Look, a part of me wants to...but a part of me is thinking that she won't forgive me," said Brandon.

"Brandon, can you honestly say that you're not willing to give this another chance? Your breakup was so ridiculous," said Brenda.

"It not ridiculous. You should know, you went through your own little triangle, remember?" asked Brandon.

"Yes but in this case, you still have a chance to get the girl of your dreams," replied Brenda.

"Good, I'm gonna hang up now so I can get back to my dreams," said Brandon.

"No, wait!" said Brenda.

"I'm still here," said Brandon.

"Some of the things you said you were gonna do were so romantic. Don't you want a chance to show her those things?" asked Brenda.

"No, they were cheesy," replied Brandon.

"I thought they were romantic. I'll fall for a guy who did those things for me," said Brenda.

"Bren, that was so long ago. Sometimes, it's nice to fantasize but sooner or later, we all have to face reality," said Brandon.

"So this your chance to make your fantasy come true," said Brenda.

"She'll love it. I promise," added Brenda.

"Well, if she wants to talk in person, the least I can do is listen," said Brandon.

"That's all she asks," said Brenda.

"So, my plane lands this Friday at 3pm at LAX. I'm at Gate 73" added Brenda.

"Thanks Bren," smiled Brandon writing the information down.

"Anything I can do to help," smiled Brenda.

"I gotta go. Bye; I'll see you Friday," added Brenda.

"See ya, Bren," said Brandon.

They both hang up the phone.

Brandon continues to sit on the bed thinking. A part of him is anxious to see Kelly again and knowing that she wants to work things out relives him. But a part of him is scared of what will happen when he sees her. He was surprised by the fact that Kelly wanted to end their relationship. While, he wanted Kelly to be sorry for what he did, it was wrong of him to hold a grudge towards her, making everyone around them including Sammy suffer. In his heart, he knows that he loves Kelly more than anything or anyone. It's the thought of whomever else that she loves scares him. Feelings can't be helped or avoided sometimes. All anyone can do is have faith and trust the other person to do the right thing.

Brandon walks into LAX wearing a black jacket. It takes him a few minutes to find his way but manages to get himself to Gate 73. He was hoping that Kelly would be there already. He looked around the seating area closest to where he was standing but doesn't see her. He headed to a nearby group of chairs where a blonde woman sitting down on one of the chairs catches his eye. While he can only see the back of her head, he can be sure she was who he was looking for. His heart started to beat a little faster as he approached her.

The row of seats behind her was empty. He slowly but casually walked up and stood behind her one seat over. He smiled and leaned forward.

"Hey, is this seat taken?" asked Brandon smiling.

The girl turned and faces Brandon. His smile surprisingly frowns as he realizes the girl wasn't Kelly.

"Eh...no," replied the confused woman.

"I'm sorry. I thought you were somebody else. As you were," said Brandon politely excusing himself.

"It's ok," smiled the woman.

Brandon breathes in and looks around with still a little bit of humiliation.

He suddenly hears a familiar voice from behind.

"Brandon?" asked the familiar voice.

He turns around and sees Kelly.

"Kel...hi," said Brandon walking towards her.

"What are you doing here?" asked Kelly with a confused look.

"What do you mean? I'm picking up Brenda," replied Brandon.

"Why would you pick her up? She's staying with me," replied Kelly.

"Yes, but she said you wanted to talk...so here I am," said Brandon now a little confused too.

"She told you?" asked Kelly.

"About you picking her up? Yeah, she called me," replied Brandon.

"I don't believe this," said Kelly who turns around and starts to walk away.

"Wait, so you didn't want to talk to me?" asked Brandon following her.

"No Brandon, I didn't. If I wanted to talk to you, I would've called you," replied Kelly who gets up and starts to walk away.

"Oh. Where are we going?" asked Brandon.

"I'M going home. YOU can pick her up...and when you see her, please tell her that I'm very mad at her," replied Kelly who stops and faces Brandon.

"Yeah me too. I mean I drove almost 6 hours to get here," said Brandon.

"Can we at least talk?" asked Brandon.

Kelly sighs and looks at him.

"Please?" asked Brandon.

"Ok." replied Kelly.

"Thanks," said Brandon who leads Kelly to two empty chairs nearby.

"So, what do you want to talk about?" asked Kelly.

"Us and about what happened," replied Brandon.

"Brandon, we've already went through this," said Kelly not looking at Brandon.

"I just wanted to say I'm sorry for the way I acted. And if...there is absolutely nothing going on between you and Dylan...I want to come back so we can be a family again," said Brandon.

Kelly turns and looks at him.

"Is that all?" asked Kelly.

"And...I love you?" asked Brandon.

"What else you got?" asked Kelly.

"I think I summarized everything. It would help if you said you're sorry too," replied Brandon surprised by Kelly's attitude.

"Brandon, if you recall, I've been apologizing for the past 3 weeks now. And all you've done is made me feel more guilty like I'm nothing. And now because you're now apologizing to me, I'm supposed to accept it just like that?" asked Kelly.

People sitting around them start to take notice of their argument.

"Kelly, we're both here to apologize. I'm not the only one at fault here, remember?" asked Brandon.

"I know...but at least I had the decency not to strip all your dignity out of you," replied Kelly who starts to get up.

"Kel, please. I'm trying to work with you here. I love you. I love Sammy. I want to come back. I mean it. I'm really sorry for accusing you. Please...I love you so much," said Brandon holding onto Kelly.

They both get teary and start to cry.

"No, I'm sorry but I can't...I have to go," said Kelly who starts to get up.

"No you don't. You have time to stay and listen to me so we can work this out," said Brandon still holding onto Kelly.

Kelly tries to get up again while Brandon keeps trying to pull her down. With all of her might, she forcefully pulls herself away from Brandon causing everyone around her to notice.

"I was crying and pouring my heart out and you still walked away, remember? What else do I have to give to you? Nothing...and whatever I have left, you don't deserve it," said Kelly with a loud and very angry voice.

Brandon looks at her in shock.

"Kelly, I...," said Brandon, who slowly starts to walk towards her.

"No. Don't come any closer. Just leave me alone," said Kelly, who interrupts Brandon.

"I'm not happy in this relationship anymore," cried Kelly.

Brandon gets teary as well.

"I'm sorry," said Kelly looking at Brandon.

Everyone around them is still watching them. A nearby policeman slowly walks towards Kelly.

"Everything ok, ma'am?" asked the policeman.

"Yes. I was just about to leave. I'm sorry," replied Kelly.

"Thank you," said the policeman who takes a few steps back but does not leave.

Brandon watches as Kelly walks away. He is hesitant to follow her but eventually starts to.

"Kelly, wait," said Brandon walking towards Kelly.

Kelly stops and turns around.

"Officer, could you please keep this guy away from me?" asked Kelly loudly to the policeman.

"Yes," replied the policeman walking towards Brandon.

"Sir, please come with me," said the policeman.

Brandon stops as he watches Kelly walk away. Kelly wipes her tears away but cries even more as she no longer hears Brandon's voice.

Brandon starts to walk with the policeman. He then stops and runs back towards Kelly.

"Sir, get back here," said the policeman chasing after Brandon.

Brandon catches up to Kelly.

"Kelly," cried Brandon who...

"Kel, I want to read you something," said Brandon.

"I don't want to hear it," said Kelly.

"Well, I'm gonna say them anyway. It's what I was gonna say to you at our wedding," said Brandon, which catches Kelly's attention.

"Sir, you have to come with me," said the policeman trying to restrain Brandon.

Kelly turns around.

Still under the control of the policeman, he starts his speech.

"For more than 10 years, I was filled with regret; the regret that I will never find true love after you...," started Brandon as he is being dragged away by the cops.

People around them starting to stop and look.

"Wait officer...if it's ok with you, I want to hear this," said Kelly who looks at Brandon.

The policeman stops and looks at Kelly.

"Are you sure, ma'am?" asked the policeman.

"Yes...thank you," replied Kelly.

The policeman slowly lets go of Brandon.

As he looks at Kelly, it takes a moment for Brandon to catch his breath.

"For more than 10 years, I was filled with regret; the regret that I will never find true love after you. And that became true, I didn't. Which is a good thing because it only brought me back to you. It's safe to say that we've been through a lot; good times, bad times. If anything, it proves to everyone and most importantly to us that true love will find a way to win. And now I have no regret. Instead there is only hope and happiness for what awaits us because our love is time without end. For you are my wife, my lover, my very best friend," said Brandon.

Kelly stands there and looks at Brandon.

People around them are smiling and are awed by Brandon's speech.

"Kelly, I'm so sorry," said Brandon.

Kelly continues to look at him but remains silent.

The policeman looks inpatient.

"Ok sir. Let's go. C'mon," said the policeman.

"Kel...," said Brandon who looks worried.

Kelly doesn't say anything.

"C'mon man," said policeman pulling Brandon away.

Brandon looks hurt as Kelly does not say anything to him. He looks at her one last time and looks down.

"Ok officer, let's go," said Brandon turning around and they walk away.

Kelly still stands there as she watches them walk towards the door.

"Wait," said Kelly.

The policeman and Brandon turned around. Kelly walks towards them.

She looks at Brandon.

She then turns and looks at the policeman.

"Officer, is it ok if I say one more thing before you take him out of here?" asked Kelly.

"Make it quick," replied the policeman who is tired and impatient.

Kelly turns and looks at Brandon. She sees that he never took his eyes off her. She quickly leans in puts her hands on Brandon's face and kisses Brandon passionately.

The people around them started to cheer and clap.

Still strained by the policeman, Brandon does his best in giving into the kiss.

They eventually break.

Brandon still being held onto by the policeman, looks at the policeman with a sympathetic look. The policeman looks at Kelly and sees the same look that Brandon is giving him.

He acknowledges them with an "Oh ok" look. He lets him loose.

Brandon turns and smiles at Kelly before putting his arms around her. They kiss once more.

People around them cheer again.

"Ok, that's quite enough. I assume that you two will not cause any more disturbances," said the policeman.

The crowd starts to disperse.

Still with their arms around one another, Brandon and Kelly look at the policeman.

"Yes, thank you, officer. I'm sorry about before," said Brandon.

"Not a problem. That was pretty romantic what you said. I can see that it was worth it," said the policeman.

Brandon looks at Kelly who smiles at him.

"Yes, it was, is, and will always will be," said Brandon.

"Thank you, officer," said Kelly.

"Take care, folks," said the policeman.

Brandon and Kelly watches as the policeman turns around and leaves.

They turned and look at each other and smile.

They don't say anything for a brief moment.

"Thank you for taking a second chance on a jerk like me," said Brandon.

"We've all been there. But I have to admit what you said was pretty romantic," said Kelly.

"Is this your way of saying that we're still getting married?" asked Brandon.

Kelly gives Brandon a romantic look.

"No," replied Kelly.

Brandon's smile suddenly frowns a bit.

"This is," smiled Kelly as she leans in and kisses Brandon.

Brandon puts his arms around her pull her closer as they continue to kiss.

As they kiss, footsteps starts approaching them and a distant shadow becomes bigger.

We hear a baby starts crying as it interrupts Brandon and Kelly's kissing.

They turn and now have a surprised look on their face when they see who is in front of them.
