Chpt 55 – Our First Day
We see the clock on the dresser showing 4:03am. Brandon and Kelly are in bed. Brandon is awake. He turns and looks at Kelly who is asleep. He slowly lifts the blanket that's covering Kelly. He slowly places his hand on her stomach.
Kelly starts to stir and wakes.
"Again?" asked Kelly still with her eyes closed.
"Sorry, I can't help myself," replied Brandon.
"I know. Go ahead. I know you have your urges," joked Kelly.
Brandon starts to slowly rub Kelly's stomach.
"What time is it?" asked Kelly.
"4," replied Brandon.
"When are you leaving for work?" asked Kelly.
"8," replied Brandon.
"Honey, why don't you go back to sleep?" asked Kelly who sounds tired.
"Because I'm too excited about my first day and want to share the news with our baby," replied Brandon.
"Mmm…the baby isn't even showing yet. It's barely a fetus," said Kelly.
"That's not a good thing to say about our kid," said Brandon.
"You know, you're class is going to appreciate you more if you show up with a good night's rest. I think you would want to make a good first impression," said Kelly.
"I will. I'll be fine," said Brandon.
"I will miss not going to the doctor's with you though," said Brandon.
"It's ok. It's not a big deal. It's just a precautionary checkup," said Kelly.
"Still, I never got to do that with Sammy…so I figured I want to be there this time," said Brandon.
"I tried to find a later time where we can go together but she wasn't available," said Kelly.
"I know," said Brandon looking down.
"I'll have Silver tape it; how about that?" asked Kelly sensing Brandon's mood.
"No, don't be silly; it's ok," said Brandon pretending that he doesn't want them to tape it.
"Ok," said Kelly turning to the side and going back to sleep.
Brandon turns and looks at Kelly sleep.
"Of course, if you guys want to, I wouldn't mind seeing it," said Brandon.
"Ok," said Kelly.
"Only if it's not too much trouble," said Brandon.
"Ok. I'll see if I can have Silver do a live webstream so you can watch it while you're teaching," joked Kelly.
"Mmmm….that'll be amazing," said Brandon seriously but really just joking.
Kelly sits up quickly.
"Brandon; I was only joking. That's too personal," said Kelly.
"I know. I knew you were only joking," said Brandon.
"Good," said Kelly with a sleepy look.
Brandon smiles.
"What?" asked Kelly confused.
"You look so beautiful with your motherly glow," said Brandon.
"Honey, that's not glow. That's just sweat," said Kelly tired.
"Sweat; glow; it all looks good on you," said Brandon.
"Awww…that's sweet….and kinda gross," said Kelly.
"So?" asked Brandon.
Brandon smiles and leans in for a kiss.
They kiss.
"So, what's on your mind?" asked Kelly.
"I can't sleep. I'm just excited that I finally have a job again," replied Brandon.
"Honey, we're all very proud of you," said Kelly.
"But I'm getting a little frustrated that you won't let your wife sleep," added Kelly.
Kelly sits up. She gives Brandon a tired look.
"Brandon, it's 4 in the morning. What do you want from me?" asked Kelly.
"Can we talk?" asked Brandon.
"About what?" asked Kelly.
"Do you think I'll be a good teacher?" asked Brandon.
"Yes, I have no doubt you'll be great," replied Kelly.
"You better get some sleep. You don't want to be tired on your first day," added Kelly lying back down on the bed.
"What if the kids laugh at me?" asked Brandon.
"Then fail all of them," joked Kelly.
"I'm serious. This is a big deal. I want to make a good impression," said Brandon.
Kelly sits up again.
"Brandon, you'll do fine. This isn't like you to worry so much," said Kelly.
"What's that supposed to mean?" asked Brandon.
"You're always so confident and excited. You weren't this nervous when you got the job for the paper," replied Kelly.
"Yeah but this different," said Brandon.
"How?" asked Kelly.
"I took me a while to get this job. I don't want to make any mistakes and end up losing it," replied Brandon.
"You won't. You'll do just fine," said Kelly.
"But how do you know that?" asked Brandon.
"Because I'm your wife and I love you enough to know everything about you. You're worrying for nothing," replied Kelly.
"Can you come with me on my first day?" asked Brandon.
"You're joking me, right?" asked Kelly.
"C'mon. If I do something wrong, then you can raise your hand and say something," replied Brandon.
"And say what?" asked Kelly.
"How about, "I agree, Mr. Walsh,"" replied Brandon.
"Brandon, I'm busy today. Plus I'm not going to do that for you," said Kelly.
"But I'm your husband. I thought we're supposed to help each other out," joked Brandon.
"Honey, I am helping you out by giving you good advice. As a guidance counselor, my suggestion is for you to show up and teach your class to the best of your ability. These are college students; they should be mature enough to listen to you. Plus, if they don't want to fail, they'll behave," said Kelly.
"Ok," said Brandon.
"Can I hold you?" asked Brandon.
Kelly smiles.
"Ok," replied Kelly.
Kelly snuggles up to Brandon and he puts his arms around her.
Kelly and Silver are driving to the doctor's office.
"It's so beautiful outside today. I wish I could have the full day off," said Silver.
"Yeah, I'm glad I have the day off," said Kelly.
"You couldn't use your magic and do the same for me?" asked Silver.
"Sorry sis. Couldn't swing that. The only reason they gave me the ok for you was because Brandon had to work," replied Kelly.
"Oooo, it's still funny to hear these words again…Brandon has to work," said Silver.
"Don't make fun of him. It's his first day. I hope everything goes well," said Kelly.
"Why was he a nervous wreck?" asked Silver.
"Both but actually; he was really excited. But he did wish he can with me with the doctor today," replied Kelly.
"Well, I brought my camera with me…so he wouldn't miss a thing," said Brandon.
"Yeah, I might not want you pointing that thing at me the entire time," said Kelly.
"C'mon Kel; it's life and art all at once," said Kelly.
Kelly laughs.
"This is just a simple doctor's appointment, Silver. Let's not make it a bigger deal than that," said Silver.
Brandon walks to the door of his classroom. He peeks through the glass window to find a room full of students. Some students are talking amongst each other. He takes a deep breath and opens the door and walk in. As he turns towards his desk in the middle, students starts to notice and looked at him. Students begin to settle down.
Brandon took a moment to look at his class. There must be at least 150 students there in the lecture hall. He takes another deep breath. He puts his bag down on table and walk to the middle of the floor.
"Good morning, everybody," said Brandon.
"My name is Brandon Walsh. Please feel free to call me Brandon or Mr. Walsh…either one is fine," continued Brandon who's feeling a little nervous.
"I graduated from CU back in 1997. I know...I know…I'm old," said Brandon.
The class laughs. Brandon pauses and smiles during the laughter as he now feels a little more comfortable. He is now at ease.
"Anyway, I was student body president, worked for the Condor paper, and also managed the CU TV station. After graduating from CU, I went ahead to cofound a local paper called The Beverly Beat with one of my best friends. Some of you might've heard of it. I then moved to Washington to be a reporter. I got to travel all around the world and write about interesting stories. I know what some of you might be thinking. So why am I here?...It's a long story but to summarize it, Love. I fell in love so here I am," said Brandon.
Most of the students are smiling.
"Welcome to Journalism 101. The technology has evolved. The way we perceive information has evolved. But journalism; good journalism – the power to capture readers' attention through writing stays the same. The beauty of writing allows the imagination to run wild. We've give them the facts; they create the picture in their minds. That's the way I see journalism," continued Brandon.
Kelly and Silver is at the doctor's office. Kelly is wearing an examination gown. She is lying down on the examination bed/table.
Silver takes her camera out and points it at Kelly.
"Ok, I'm ready," said Silver.
"Ok," said Kelly as she sits up.
"And action," said Silver.
"Hi Brandon. I know you wanted to be with me today to experience this but I hope you're having a great first day at work. We're all very proud of you. I love you," said Kelly.
Silver puts the camera down.
"That's it?" asked Silver.
"Yeah, what's wrong with it?" asked Kelly.
"Kinda boring; isn't it?" asked Silver.
"I think it was very sweet…and what do you mean by boring?" asked Kelly.
"Cmon, Kel. Brandon already knows that you love him. What don't we take some glamour shots of you?" asked Silver.
"Silver, what kind of video are you trying to make here?" asked Kelly.
Silver has a wicked smile on her face.
"No," said Kelly.
"Ok. Ok. Sorry for trying to make the setting more romantic," replied Silver.
"That's not important. I'm telling Brandon how I'm feeling right now," said Kelly.
"Fine. The director is not happy," said Silver pointing the camera at herself.
Kelly laughs.
"Come here," said Kelly smiling at Silver.
Silver walks towards Kelly and sits next to Kelly.
Kelly puts her arms around Silver and gives her a hug.
"What's that for?" asked Silver.
"For being here with me," replied Kelly.
"There's no place I'd rather be," replied Silver.
The door opens and the doctor peeks in.
"Hi…is it ok to come in?" asked the doctor.
"Hi Dr. Long. Yes, please come in," replied Kelly.
"Thanks. I didn't want to interrupt," said Dr. Long.
"No problem; Dr. Long, this is my sister, Silver. Silver, this is Dr. Long," said Kelly.
"Hi Silver. It's nice to meet you," said Dr. Long.
"Hi Dr. Long. It's nice to meet you too," said Silver.
"Sorry Brandon couldn't be here today. It's his first day at his new job," said Kelly.
"Oh, how exciting. What does he do?" asked Dr. Long.
"He's a journalism teacher at California University," replied Kelly.
"Oh great. A new job a new baby on the way; how exciting," said Dr. Long.
"Yeah, we're really excited," smiled Kelly.
"Good. So, we're going to do some basic checkups and precautions. But please note it may be too early to know the sex of the baby," said Dr. Long.
"Ok," said Kelly.
"We'll love it regardless," said Silver.
Kelly and Dr. Long chuckles.
Dr. Long pulls some medical equipment over.
"Ok Kelly, if you may, please lift up your gown," said Dr. Long.
Kelly lifts up her gown.
Dr. Long puts one end of a metal sensor on Kelly's belly. She turns on the machine showing a picture of Kelly's stomach.
Silver takes out her camera.
"Wow, looks like you got a lot of stuff in there, Kel," said Silver who starts filming.
Kelly gives Silver a weird look.
"Good observation, Silver," said Kelly sarcastically.
"No, I'm serious. I can't even see the baby," said Silver.
"Silver, you just gotta look hard enough. Here, I'll find the baby," said Kelly.
Kelly looks at the screen confused trying to find her baby on the screen.
She turns and glances at Dr. Long who is silent but attentively looking at the screen.
"Eh…Dr. Long?" asked Kelly.
"Which one of those things in there is my baby?" asked Kelly.
Dr. Long has a puzzled look on her face. She doesn't respond.
"Dr. Long?" asked Kelly who notices the awkward silence.
Dr. Long finally looks at Kelly.
"Kelly, may I speak to you in private?" asked Dr. Long.
Some time goes by. Kelly and Silver are in the car. Silver is driving.
"You ok?" asked Silver.
"Hanging in there," replied Kelly.
"You know you're gonna have to tell him, right?" asked Silver.
"Yeah, I know," replied Kelly with a sad face.
"My advice is just sit him down and just come out with it. Just be completely honest," said Silver.
"Thanks," said Kelly with a worried look.
Later that night at home.
Brandon opens the door and walks in.
"Hi everybody," said Brandon.
"Hey Brandon," said Kelly and Silver.
"Hey dad," said Sammy.
Brandon goes and hugs Sammy. He picks him up and plays with him.
"Hey buddy," said Brandon.
"Wow, someone is sure in a good mood," said Silver.
"Yes, I am. I had a great first day," said Brandon.
"Great. Sit down; we want to hear all about it. Dinner's ready," said Kelly in an non-excited manner.
"Ok," said Brandon confused by Kelly's reaction.
Brandon walks by Kelly and gives her a kiss on the cheek before sitting down next to her.
"Hey, how's the baby?" asked Brandon smiling.
"Good...great," replied Kelly.
Silver gives Kelly a disapproval look.
"Any details?" asked Brandon.
"Yeah; I'll tell you after dinner," replied Kelly.
"Ok," said Brandon still looking confused.
"So, what happened? We're dying to know," asked Kelly faking a smile.
"Well, I was a little nervous walking in and seeing over a hundred people staring at me..." replied Brandon.
"You should try picturing them naked next time," joked Silver.
"Ewww," said Sammy.
"Silver!" said Kelly.
"What? I heard it works. It helps you calm down," said Silver.
"Thanks Silver. But I didn't do that. Instead, I opened up with a quick story about myself and my time at CU. I added in a few jokes here and there...and once I got the class laughing...I was able to get into teaching," said Brandon.
"That's great, honey," said Kelly.
"Thanks," smiled Brandon.
"We're all so proud of you," said Kelly leaning in for a kiss.
They kiss.
"I'm proud of you too," said Brandon quietly to Kelly.
Kelly gives Brandon a weak smile.
Kelly looks at Silver who gives her the same disapproval look.
Later that night, we see Kelly in bed. She is looking forward still with the sad look on her face.
Brandon walks in and gets into the adjoining side of the bed next to her.
"Ok, tell me everything…don't leave anything out," said Brandon.
"Ok," said Kelly.
"Before you start; I want to say that I wanted to be there with you today. But I can't get out of it; it's the first day," said Brandon.
"I know. It's ok," said Kelly with a sad look.
Brandon takes Kelly's hand.
"You ok? You were quiet all night," asked Brandon.
"I got a picture of the baby," replied Kelly.
"You did? Great! Let me see," said Brandon excited.
Kelly grabs her purse from her nightstand and looks inside for the picture. She takes out a picture of her sonogram and gives it to Brandon.
Brandon looks at the picture with a confusing look.
"Ok, you gotta help me out here...heh heh…where's the baby?" asked Brandon.
Kelly points to a small dot on the sonogram," replied Kelly.
"Oh….thanks….mmm…I thought it would be bigger than that," said Brandon.
"That's because it should be," said Kelly.
"No, it's ok. We got nine months. I'm sure it's a long process. Just got to be patient," said Brandon.
"Well, don't get too attached to it. But the doctor tells me that I'm most likely going to lose the baby," said Kelly.
Brandon's face starts to turn sad.
"I don't get it. I thought having Sammy was an indicator that you were able to have kids," said Brandon.
"That's what I thought too. It turns out since I'm older now, the chances of me having more kids is even less," said Kelly.
"Oh babe, I'm so sorry," said Brandon who leans in and hugs Kelly.
Kelly holds onto Brandon as small tears rolls down her face. She quickly wipes them away.
"No, I'm supposed to be the one who's sorry," said Kelly.
"It's not your fault," said Brandon.
"Yes, it is. It's my body," said Kelly.
"Look Kel, I know this isn't what you want to hear. But maybe we were meant to just have one child. We're very lucky to have him," said Brandon.
"I know. Think about it. If it wasn't for my problem, this could've been our third child," said Kelly.
"Don't think about that. It'll only make you feel worse," said Brandon.
"How can you say that?" asked Kelly backing off from Brandon.
"What? What did I say?" asked Brandon.
"Don't think about it? How do you expect me to do that? You think I could just forget that something was alive in me and now it's dead?" asked Kelly.
"Kel, you know I didn't mean it like that," replied Brandon.
"Then what did you mean? This is going to be my 2nd miscarriage," said Kelly.
"I don't know. I was just trying to make you feel better. I don't know what else to say," said Brandon.
"You don't have to say anything. You can't stop the inevitable," said Kelly.
Brandon looks down.
Kelly is alone in bed looking at her phone. She is mindlessly scrolling through her contacts. She stops scrolling and dials a number.
"Hey," said Kelly.
"Hi Kelly. How's my favorite sister in law?" asked Brenda.
Kelly chuckles a little.
"Brenda, I'm your only sister in law," replied Kelly.
"That's why you're my favorite," said Brenda.
Kelly chuckles some more.
"So what's up?" asked Brenda.
"I'm not sure if Brandon had told you but I'm pregnant," replied Kelly.
"What? Congratulations!" said Brenda.
"No, I'm so mad that he didn't tell me," added Brenda.
"Thanks...too bad it's not going to last," said Kelly.
"What do you mean?" asked Brenda.
"The doctor told me that I'm going to miscarry again," replied Kelly.
"Oh no. I'm sorry to hear that," said Brenda.
"Yeah me too," said Kelly.
"Wait…can a doctor predict a miscarriage?" asked Brenda.
"I guess so. We can barely see it on the sonogram. The doctor said it's hanging on life support," said Kelly.
"Did you find out whether it's a boy or girl?" asked Brenda.
"No. It's so small; we can't tell," replied Kelly.
"I'm sorry, Kel. Even though I was never pregnant, I know how you feel," said Brenda.
"Thanks. I wish Brandon can be more sympathetic," said Kelly.
"What did he do?" asked Brenda.
"That I should be happy about having Sammy and I should get over this," replied Kelly.
"That doesn't sound like him. Maybe he didn't know what to say," said Brenda.
"Yeah, you got that right," said Kelly.
"He means well, Kelly," said Brenda.
"I know," said Kelly.
"Kel, I'm so sorry; I gotta go. Abby needs me. Can we talk later?" asked Brenda.
"Ok," replied Kelly.
"Thanks Kel. Hang in here. Bye," said Brenda.
"Bye," said Kelly.
We see Brandon walking towards his classroom. He leans against the wall nearby the door with a sad look on his face. A couple of students give him a quick smile before entering the classroom. He smiles back.
He checks his watch and walks in.
He walks to his desk.
"Good morning, everybody. If you may, please open your textbook to page 10," said Brandon.
Brandon starts to look down to his textbook but stops as he sees a student raises her hand.
"Yes?" asked Brandon.
"I'm sorry but I was hoping you'll tell us another story," said the student.
"Yeah," said a few other students in unison.
Brandon thinks about it for a moment.
"Ok. I don't have anything planned but I do have something to say," said Brandon.
"Alright," said another student.
"Yeah," said a few other students in unison.
"It's funny about life sometimes. It's easy to take it for granted. For some of us, it's easy to make plans for tonight, tomorrow, next week, and further into the future. For others, it's not the case. We really don't know how much time we have left on this planet. But, we all have to go sometime. You guys heard of the phrase, "Taken from us too soon?"" asked Brandon.
A few students nod in acknowledgement.
"If you guys ever focus on the word, "us," you'll notice that the phrase "Taken from us too soon" focuses on the people around that person – their family, friends, and loved ones. When they go, we're the ones who suffer. In a way, their death becomes our loss," continued Brandon.
Brandon pauses for a moment as he sinks in his own words.
"Now that I've depressed all of you….," joked Brandon.
The class laughs.
"I should probably let you know how my sad story relates to writing," said Brandon.
"The answer? It just does. Because we can write about everything. I always feel that with any job you have, there are so many restrictions. There's always a process or a procedure you need to follow. With writing, you can express yourself in any way you want. The point of good writing is to get through to the reader. If you do that, you've done your job. With my story, did I get through to you guys? You don't have to understand how it feels to lose something you care about. Even if you have never lost anybody in your life; did what I have to say get through to you?" asked Brandon.
We hear a few students softly say "yes."
"Good," said Brandon.
Brandon quietly walks into his bedroom. Kelly is sitting on the bed. She turns and looks at him.
"Hey. How was class?" asked Kelly.
"Good. I thought you were at work. I went over there afterwards," replied Brandon.
"Sorry, I didn't tell you. I didn't feel like going today," said Kelly.
"Listen Kel. I'm sorry about last night. I was trying to come up with something to say to make you feel better. But I know that's not easy," said Brandon walking towards Kelly.
Kelly smiles and takes his hand.
"Come here," said Kelly who pulls him down to the bed. He sits on the bed and puts his arm around Kelly.
"You are wonderful. Don't ever change," said Kelly.
Brandon gives Kelly a confusing look.
"What's with the change of heart?" asked Brandon.
"I'm sorry too. I shouldn't take this out on you. I know you're only trying to help. And yes, we are very lucky to have Sammy," replied Kelly.
"And each other," said Brandon.
Kelly leans in for a kiss. They kiss.
"Whatever happens, just know that I always want to have a baby with you," said Brandon.
Kelly smiles.
"Is that a promise?" asked Kelly.
"You bet. Name the time and place," replied Brandon.
"How about right now?" asked Kelly.
"Right now?" asked Brandon.
"Yeah, Silver and Sammy are at still at school," replied Kelly.
"Are you sure it's ok with you and the baby?" asked Brandon.
"Yeah, I don't think the baby would mind," replied Kelly chuckles.
Brandon smiles. They start to kiss. Kelly starts to unbutton Brandon's shirt and Brandon slides his hand up Kelly's shirt.
Brandon takes his hand out of Kelly's shirt. Kelly notices.
"What's the matter?" asked Kelly.
"I don't think we should be doing this now," replied Brandon.
"What? Why?" asked Kelly.
"It doesn't feel right," replied Brandon.
"What? Being with me doesn't feel good to you?" asked Kelly.
"No…no, it's not that," replied Brandon.
"I just don't to hurt the baby," added Brandon.
"Brandon, you're not going to hurt it. A lot of people have sex when they're pregnant," said Kelly.
"I know. But with your condition and the baby possibly….you know; I don't want to make things worse," said Brandon.
"You mean, you don't want to be responsible for killing the fetus?" asked Kelly.
Brandon pauses for a moment.
"I just don't want to hurt the baby," said Brandon.
"Brandon, please don't let this ruin our love life. I'm going through a lot right now. I'm feeling very vulnerable," said Kelly.
"So is the baby," said Brandon.
"Don't call it a baby when it's not going to be one," said Kelly.
"How do you know that for sure?" asked Brandon.
"Because the doctor told me," replied Kelly.
"Well, can we get a second opinion or something?" asked Brandon.
"Brandon, they did all the tests with me. Dr. Long even had a few other doctors look at the charts. They all say the same thing," replied Kelly.
Brandon gets off the bed and stands up.
"So you're giving up?" asked Brandon.
Kelly pauses for a moment.
"Yeah, I am…and so should you," replied Kelly.
Brandon looks sad as if he's about to cry. Kelly notices.
She gets off the bed and goes to Brandon. She hugs Brandon.
"Brandon, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say that," said Kelly.
"So you're not giving up or that I shouldn't give up?" asked Brandon.
Kelly takes a deep breath.
"I don't want to lie to you. I really don't know what to think right now," replied Kelly.
"But what I do know is that whatever happens, I don't want it to prevent us from expressing ourselves. I know I'm vulnerable now but I love you and this is the time when I need you the most," added Kelly.
"Me too," said Brandon, giving Kelly a weak smile.
Brandon slowly leans in and kisses Kelly. He slides his hand up Kelly's shirt and pulls her closer.
Some time goes by and we see Brandon and Kelly in bed. They are holding each other. Kelly is getting sleepy in Brandon's arms. He goes and kisses her on her forehead. Kelly stirs a little.
"Mmm…that was good," said Kelly.
"Me too," said Brandon.
"We should get dress. Silver and Sammy will be back soon," said Kelly.
"Ok," said Brandon.
"I have a doctor's appointment on Friday. Are you available?" asked Kelly.
"Yeah, I'll be there," replied Brandon.
Brandon and Kelly are at the doctor's office. Kelly's on the examination bed. Brandon is sitting in the chair next to the bed. He takes Kelly's hand and holds it.
Kelly gives Brandon a weak smile.
The door opens and Dr. Long walks in.
"Hi. Sorry, I got held up with another patient," said Dr. Long.
"It's ok. Dr. Long, this is my husband, Brandon. Brandon, this is Dr. Long," said Kelly.
"Hi Dr. Long. It's nice to meet you," said Brandon extending his hand.
"Hi Brandon; it's nice to meet you too," said Dr. Long shaking Brandon's hand.
"So Brandon, I'm sure Kelly filled you in on what we discussed last time?" asked Dr. Long.
"Yes, we are sad but if there is anything you can do to save our baby, please do," replied Brandon.
"We're definitely do our best," said Dr. Long.
"Thanks," said Brandon.
"You're welcome. I know this can be a difficult time for you both," said Dr. Long.
"Yeah, we're doing our best to cope," said Kelly.
"Ok, if you don't mind; Kelly, please lift up your shirt and we'll get started," said Dr. Long.
Kelly lifts up her shirt.
Dr. Long turns on the sonogram machine and put the detector on Kelly's stomach. Brandon and Kelly looks at the screen.
"Wow, we can see everything," said Brandon.
"Yeah; amazing, isn't it?" asked Kelly.
"Is our baby still there?" asked Kelly.
"I think this is it," replied Brandon pointing to the screen.
"I don't think so. It was much smaller before. Dr. Long?" asked Kelly.
Dr. Long looks at the screen with a confused look.
"Please excuse me. Kelly and Brandon, I'll be right back. I have to check on something," said Dr. Long.
"Oh ok," said Kelly.
Dr. Long walks out the door.
"That's weird," said Brandon.
"Yeah. She had the same look right before she told me that I was going to miscarry," said Kelly.
"Do you think it's more bad news this time?" asked Brandon.
"I hope not," replied Kelly.
Brandon holds Kelly's hand tighter.
Dr. Long walks back in carrying some papers with her.
"Sorry about that. How are you both doing?" asked Dr. Long.
"Kind of nervous. Did you see something on the screen?' asked Kelly.
"Yes, I did. That's why I wanted to double check what we saw last time," replied Dr. Long.
"Well, doc; don't keep us waiting now," joked Brandon.
"I got good news and bad news. The good news is that your baby has grown to the point where it has a less likely chance of you being miscarried," said Dr. Long.
"Wow, that's great news," said Kelly.
"Yes, it is. The bad news is that you still show the signs of miscarrying. That doesn't mean that'll happen but it could still happen," said Dr. Long.
"So, is there a time where we can be certain that this won't happen?" asked Brandon.
"It's too early right now. I would say at least when you start showing. Even then, it's still possible depending on how your body supports the baby," replied Kelly.
"But as of right now, there's a baby in there?" asked Kelly.
"Yeah. Congratulations!" replied Dr. Long smiling.
Brandon leans over to Kelly. They kiss.
"So what happened before?" asked Brandon.
"I don't know for sure. In the case of a miscarriage, by this time, the baby should be on its way out. Looks like you've got a miracle for your little miracle," replied Dr. Long smiling.
"Is there things we can do or avoid during this time?" asked Brandon.
"Nothing out of the ordinary that any women who are pregnant should do. No alcohol or smoking. I would also try to avoid stress," replied Dr. Long.
"Thanks Dr. Long. I will," said Kelly.
"I'll be right back. I'll give you a two a minute," said Dr. Long.
"Ok. Thanks for the good news," said Kelly.
"You're welcome," said Dr. Long.
Dr. Long leaves.
"Well, did you hear that? Looks like you're gonna make it after all," said Brandon leaning towards Kelly's belly.
Kelly smiles.
We focus on the screen on the sonogram machine showing their baby.
