Chpt 57 – Unblast from the Past: Part 2
Kelly is at home in bed. She's curled up with a box of tissues.
Her phone rings. She sees that it's Brandon and ignores it.
Silver peeks in the half-opened door and sees Kelly.
"Kel, I didn't know you were home already," said Silver.
"Yeah. Harry told me to go home," said Kelly who is facing the other side.
"Ok. You wanna talk about it?" asked Silver.
"No, not really," replied Kelly.
Silver senses that something is wrong. She slowly walks into the room.
"Kel, is something wrong?" asked Silver.
"Yeah," replied Kelly.
Silver walks to Kelly and sees that she's been crying.
"You've been crying," said Silver who puts her hand on Kelly's shoulder.
"Yeah, I'm fine. It's just been a really bad day," said Kelly.
"You sure you don't want to talk about it?" asked Silver.
"Thanks. But I just want to be alone," replied Kelly.
Silver is silent for a moment.
"Ok. I'll be around if you need me," said Silver.
"Thanks," said Kelly.
Silver leaves and closes the door behind her.
Later that evening, Silver quietly knocks on Kelly's door. There's no answer. She slowly opens the door.
"Sammy, remember to be quiet. Your mom's probably sleeping," said Silver.
"Ok," said Sammy.
They both come in carrying food in a breakfast-in-bed tray. They see Kelly's asleep.
Silver puts the food on Kelly's nightstand.
"Kelly," said Silver as she approaches Kelly.
Kelly still looks asleep.
Silver puts her hand on Kelly's shoulder and starts to slowly rub it hoping it will wake her up.
Kelly starts to stir.
"Kelly, we have dinner for you," said Silver.
"Oh, what time is it?" asked Kelly.
"It's 7 at night," replied Silver.
"Oh. You guys eaten already?" asked Kelly.
"Yeah. Brandon called and said he's going to be late…so I just cooked dinner for everyone," replied Silver.
"Hey, I helped too," said Sammy.
"Ok. We cooked dinner," said Silver.
"Oh. Thanks for doing that," said Kelly who sits up.
"Mom, is everything ok?' asked Sammy.
"Yeah honey. I'm just tired. Are you full?" asked Kelly.
"Yeah," replied Sammy.
Kelly smiles as pulls Sammy in for a hug. She kisses Sammy on the cheek.
"Thank you," said Kelly.
"Can I go watch TV?" asked Sammy.
"Ok. Sure," replied Kelly.
"Thanks," said Sammy who walks away.
Silver takes a seat on the bed next to Kelly.
"Kel, I'm worry about you," said Silver.
"Thanks Silver. I'm just having a bad day," said Kelly.
"Yeah, you told me that already. How what's wrong?" asked Silver.
"You know who's Ricky Webber?" asked Kelly.
"No," replied Silver.
"Well, he's a transfer student who mouthed off at me today," said Kelly.
"That sucks," said Silver.
"Yeah," said Kelly.
"Care to tell me what he said?" asked Silver.
"Oh, same ol; same ol. Slut; bitch; you know, the same thing," replied Kelly.
"No offense but I've seen students called you those before. And it never wore you down before," said Silver.
"Everybody's got their limits. I've reached mine today," said Kelly.
"Well, I hope he gets kicked out of school," said Silver.
"I tried to help him. But he just got really angry with me because I couldn't help him get onto the football team," said Kelly.
"He cussed you out because of that? You're not in charge of sports," asked Silver.
"He did but there's more to the story," replied Kelly.
"You remember when I told you about my freshman year at West Beverly? About the guy who you know," asked Kelly.
"Yeah?" asked Silver.
"Well, Ricky is his son," replied Kelly.
"Oh no…small world," said Silver.
"Yeah. I met him a week ago," said Kelly.
"Did you try to get rid of him then? "asked Silver.
"No. I mean, I thought about it. The last thing I want is for relive that year again, especially since I'm back at West Beverly. But I don't think I can live with myself if I did that," replied Kelly.
"So, let me guess; you tried to get him on to the football team but the coach said no…and he cussed you out," said Silver.
"Yup. And he also brought up the fact that his dad told him about me," said Kelly.
"Oh no. Don't worry, Kel. I'll protect you from any rumors. Anyone I hear talking trash about you will get it from me," said Silver.
"Silver, I appreciate the bodyguard but it's not necessary. I'll be fine; really," said Kelly.
"Ok; well, I'm still going to be on alert," said Silver feeling tough.
"Thanks," said Kelly giving Silver a hug.
They hear the front door opening.
"Someone body's home just in time for dinner," said Silver.
"I'll go get Brandon's dinner if you guys want to eat in here," added Silver.
"No, it's ok. I'll come to the kitchen. I've been moping for way too long," said Kelly.
Kelly and Silver leave the room and walk into the kitchen.
"Hey guys. Dinner smells great," said Brandon.
"Yeah, Sammy and I already ate. But you two can enjoy a romantic dinner together," said Silver.
"Oh…ok. Thanks Silver," said Brandon surprised.
"No problem at all. Have a seat Mr. Walsh," said Silver.
Brandon takes a seat. He is surprised by Silver's generous attitude.
"Have a good dinner you two," said Silver.
"Thanks again," said Brandon.
Silver leaves.
"Wow, this is really nice of Silver. Unexpected but really nice," smiled Brandon.
Kelly doesn't say anything. She looks exhausted and tired. Brandon notices.
"Kelly, you ok?" asked Brandon.
"Not really but no matter," replied Kelly.
"What's wrong?" asked Brandon.
"Nothing. You want some wine?" asked Kelly who goes to the cabinet and pulls out a new bottle of wine.
"No, and you shouldn't either," replied Brandon.
"Ok, more for me then," said Kelly who pulls the cork out of the bottle and pours herself some wine.
Brandon quickly goes to her and stops her from drinking it.
Kelly resisted and lets Brandon take the wine bottle away from her.
"Hand me the glass, Kel," asked Brandon.
"Why were you late today?" asked Kelly.
"I had student meetings after my class," replied Brandon.
"I see. So what happens at these student meetings?" asked Kelly.
"We go over my marks from their papers," replied Brandon confused.
"Is that all?" asked Kelly.
"Yeah, why would there be anything else?" asked Brandon.
"Well, you know how college girls can be? We were in college once," said Kelly.
"Kel, I'm sorry. This is a weird conversation. Can you please let me know what's going on?" asked Brandon.
"I saw Ricky again today," replied Kelly.
"Ah hah," said Brandon.
"He called me a slut and a tease…and told me that his dad told her about what happen to me in high school," said Kelly.
"Oh no. I'm so sorry," said Brandon who gets close to Kelly.
Still with her wine glass in hand, she pushes him away.
"So after Ricky made feel like crap, I decided to come and see you at your office," replied Kelly.
"I overheard you," said Kelly.
"Ok. With who?" asked Brandon still confused on where Kelly is going with this.
"The girl who was all giggly and complementing on how smart you are and how handsome you are," replied Kelly.
"Kel, there's nothing between us," said Brandon.
"For that moment, I felt even worse because it seemed like whatever Ricky told me was true. I still am that type of girl from high school who every guy sees me as easy and a tease. But it doesn't matter how much I am in love with the guy, I always have no idea how the guy feels about me. For that moment, when I overheard you with her, I never felt so vulnerable," said Kelly with tears I her eyes.
"Kelly, I'm sorry that you heard that and that you got the wrong idea. But there's no other woman in my life besides you. I love you more than anything or anybody in the world, including myself. You mean everything to me. That student was trying to warm up to me because she nearly missed all my classes and trying to get away with it. She was flirting at me but I told her to back off and that was it," said Brandon.
"Good. That's good. That solves everything," said Kelly.
Brandon walks closer to Kelly.
"I love you; you know that?" asked Brandon.
"Yeah," replied Kelly who gives Brandon the wine glass.
Brandon takes the wine glass from Kelly and puts it on the table. He then goes and slowly puts his arms around her. She is a little reluctant but gives in to his embrace. He holds her tighter. She lays her head on his chest and cries a little. They continue to hold each other.
Some time goes by. We see Brandon and Kelly in bed. The lights are dimmed.
"I can't believe I'm so insecure," said Kelly.
"It could be the hormones. It could be because you're pregnant," said Brandon.
"Or could it mean I'm going crazy?" asked Kelly.
"I hope you're just crazy about me. If you are, then I'm just as crazy for you as you are for me," replied Brandon.
Kelly smiles.
Brandon kisses Kelly on the cheek and presses his cheek against her hair. Brandon sits up and pulls Kelly close to him. They look in the mirror facing them.
"What are you doing?" asked Kelly.
"Just trying to prove something to you," replied Brandon.
"What is it?" asked Kelly.
"Look at the mirror," replied Brandon.
"You are so beautiful," added Brandon.
"Yeah right. I'm bloated and I have to get up and pee almost every 10 minutes," said Kelly.
"That's probably what you see. But that's not what I see," said Brandon.
"Why? What do you see?" asked Kelly.
"I see the most beautiful woman I know...in the arms of the luckiest man I know," replied Brandon.
"You think so?" asked Kelly smiling and looking at Brandon.
"I know so," replied Brandon.
"Thank you," said Kelly.
Still sitting on the bed, Kelly turns around and hugs Brandon.
They break.
Kelly takes Brandon's face and kisses him strongly. They get really into the kiss. Brandon reaches under Kelly's shirt and slides his hand up.
Some time goes by and they are lying in bed.
"Do you want to come to work with me tomorrow?" asked Brandon.
"No, I trust you," replied Kelly.
"Thanks but no, not that. Maybe you want to sit in a class," said Brandon.
"Ehhh..I dunno," said Kelly.
"Why not? I'm not that boring to listen to, am I?" asked Brandon.
Kelly chuckles a little at Brandon's response.
"No; honey, I love listening to you. But I just have too much stuff in my mind right now. I need to resolve some issues at work first," said Kelly.
"Are you sure that's the right thing to do after what happened yesterday?" asked Brandon.
"Yeah, it's where I work. No matter what, I have the right to be there. I have to be available for those who want to see me," replied Kelly.
"You're so brave," joked Brandon.
"That's right. You see how I took charge of our little fun earlier?" asked Kelly joking.
Brandon chuckled.
"You mean I let you take charge?" asked Brandon.
"Oh, you're gonna get it," replied Kelly playfully hitting Brandon.
After a few moments, they calm down.
"Hey," said Brandon.
"Hey back," said Kelly.
"Becareful, ok?" asked Brandon.
"I will," replied Kelly giving Brandon a weak smile.
Silver walks into a room and finds Ricky there. The words "DETENTION" is written on the blackboard. Ricky is bobbing his head to the music coming out of his headphones.
Silver goes and takes a seat next to Ricky. Ricky notices and gives Silver a confused look.
"Yeah? Can I help you?" asked Ricky.
"Are you Ricky Webber?" asked Silver.
"Yeah, who wants to know?" asked Ricky.
"I'm Mrs. Walsh's sister," replied Silver.
"What? Did she send you get back at me?" asked Ricky.
"Actually she doesn't even know I'm here," replied Silver.
"Well then; beat it," said Ricky who puts his headphones back on.
Silver yanks his headphones off his head.
"Hey, give me those. Otherwise you'll be sorry," said Ricky.
"Gee, I thought they would've thrown you out by now," said Silver.
"What's your problem?" asked Ricky.
"You. What did you have to be so rude to my sister?" asked Silver.
"Your sister started it. If you haven't noticed, she has a tendency of promising people and not delivering," replied Ricky.
"Man, you are so naïve," said Silver.
"Hey, I'm not naïve. Don't get it twisted. She said she was gonna get me on the football team if I behave. So once she broke her promise, I think I should break mine too about being nice to her," said Ricky.
"But you didn't have to bring up her past and your dad," said Silver.
"Yeah, I was saving that for a special occasion. And man, did she made that special," smiled Ricky.
"Ricky, you may think you're tough because you just made the guidance counselor cry. But I think there's something you should know what really happened between Kelly and your dad," said Silver.
"And what's that?" asked Ricky.
"Your dad was a senior. Kelly was a freshman. Kelly had a huge crush on your dad so when your dad wanted to have some fun, she gave in. Your dad had sex with Kelly on the ground once and then never spoke to her again. She was in love with your dad but your dad saw nothing in her but a one night stand. If you haven't figured it out yet, she's the victim," replied Silver.
"You have no idea how many years it took for her to get over that…to get over the reputation of being a slut and easy…just because your dad took advantage of her. It took meeting her husband that loves her for who she really is in order for her to forget that horrible feeling. But all it took was for you to bring those bad memories back again. I hope you're happy; you've ruined a great person," said Silver who gets up and walks towards the door.
Ricky was silent as he watches Silver leave. He looks down.
Kelly is in her office working.
She hears a knock on the door. She goes and looks through the window and sees it is Ricky.
"How can I help you?" asked Kelly from the other side.
"Hi Mrs. Walsh. I'm sorry for the other day. Can we talk?" asked Ricky.
Kelly is hesitant but opens the door for him.
"Thanks. Can I come in?" asked Ricky.
"Yeah," replied Kelly.
Ricky walks in and Kelly starts to walk back to her desk.
"Do you want the door closed?" asked Ricky.
"No, please keep it opened," replied Kelly.
They both walk to Kelly's desk and take a seat.
"I guess I don't blame you for wanting the door opened," said Ricky.
"I must've given you quite a scare the other day," added Ricky.
"Yes, you did amongst other things," said Kelly.
Ricky senses Kelly's mood.
"I'm sorry. I really am," said Ricky.
"Are you?" asked Kelly.
"Yes, I am. I was angry at you but that didn't give me any right to insult you that way," replied Ricky.
"And even if I get suspended or expelled, I'm really sorry," said Ricky.
Kelly looks at Ricky.
"Ok. Apology accepted," said Kelly.
"What can I help you with?" asked Kelly.
"No, in fact, I think I can help you," replied Ricky.
"With what?" asked Kelly confused.
"Maybe helped ease your mind," said Ricky.
"I talked to your sister. She told me what really happened between you and my dad," added Ricky.
"So you believed Silver?" asked Kelly.
"Yeah, I do," replied Ricky.
"Why?" asked Kelly.
"It's a long story but basically, my mom was a rape victim and you probably can figure out who the rapist is," replied Ricky.
"Oh," said Kelly.
"My mom was always getting drunk and drugged at parties. That's how she met my dad. I guess I'm the end result. So I know how you feel…well sort of," said Ricky.
"Oh; I'm so sorry," said Kelly who is in disbelief.
"My mom didn't have any money but threaten to sue my dad for rape. So my dad gave my mom some money to shut her up," said Ricky.
"But you're staying with your dad?" asked Kelly.
"I don't want to but my mom is in a really bad situation right now," replied Ricky.
"I see," said Kelly.
"She's enrolled in some kind of drug treatment program. Until she's better or until I turn 18, the courts are making me stay with my dad," said Ricky.
"I'm sorry," said Kelly.
"Me too. I didn't ask to be born into this situation. My dad wants nothing to do with me. He constantly yells and tries to get rid of me," said Ricky.
"Does he hit you? "asked Kelly.
"No. He's too smart for that. He knows if he does, he'll get arrested," replied Ricky.
"I had no idea you were going through this," said Kelly.
"I know. That's why I was trying to occupy myself with more time here; play football or something," said Ricky.
"I still can't get you into the program. I tried my best," said Kelly.
"Thanks. I know you tried," said Ricky.
"So what are you going to do now?" asked Kelly.
"I guess your principal is in talks to send me to a different school," replied Ricky.
"Do you want to stay here?" asked Kelly.
"I don't know. I'm used to moving around. If I do, I will try my best to behave and do my work," replied Ricky.
"That would be helpful," said Kelly.
"I know you can't help me with my homework but do you think it'll be ok if I come and talk to you about any problems I have like at home and stuff?" asked Ricky.
"My door will always be open for you," said Kelly.
"Thanks Mrs. Walsh," said Ricky extending his hand to Kelly.
"It's Kelly," said Kelly shaking Ricky's hand.
Ricky smiles.
We see a bunch of students walk into a lecture hall. We see Kelly walk up to the highest row and take a seat by the corner. She watches as the students gather in and take their seat. They all seemed to be occupied with each other or their phones. Kelly looks a little nervous. She can't help but try to scan the class to see if she can find the girl who was flirting with Brandon. She would only be able to see everybody if she sitting at the highest row – even if it means having a difficult time walking down the steps.
"Hi," said a student sitting next to Kelly.
"Hi," said Kelly smiling.
"I haven't seen you here before," said the student.
"Yeah, Mr. Walsh asked me to come to audit the class and be a guest speaker," said Kelly.
"Oh ok. Cool," said the student.
"I'm Maggie," said the student.
"Hi, I'm Kelly," said Kelly.
"When's the big day?" asked Maggie.
"In about 6 months," replied Kelly.
"Is it a boy or a girl?" asked Maggie.
"Oh, we don't know yet. It's actually going to be a surprise," replied Kelly.
"Oh, that's great," said Maggie.
"So, how's the teacher?" asked Kelly.
"Ok. I've actually only made it to a few classes," replied Maggie.
Maggie leans closer towards Kelly and quietly speaks.
"To be honest, I only took this class because the teacher looks cute," said Maggie.
Kelly gives Maggie a curious look about doesn't say anything. She looks at Maggie and sees that she's wearing white flip flops.
"Have you told him that?" asked Kelly.
"No, I wouldn't have the guts to do that. Plus I think a guy like that has got to be married," replied Maggie.
"Maybe," said Kelly.
Brandon walks in.
"You see? He's cute even from up here," said Maggie.
"Yeah, I know what you mean," said Kelly.
"I'm sorry if I sound like a teenager," said Maggie.
"No, it's ok. Just don't act on anything. You don't want his wife to get mad," said Kelly.
"Yeah. Why you think I'm sitting up at the highest row?" asked Maggie.
Kelly and Maggie laugh quietly.
"Sorry I'm late everybody," said Brandon.
"So, I know all we've been doing so far in this class is focusing on our writing and how our writing is presented to the reader. And that it's very important to effectively communicate our messages to the reader. As a writer, you'll probably be doing that most of the time. But sometimes, you'll be asked to present your work and read it," said Brandon.
"Even though this is not a public speaking course, I still want to talk a bit about this subject because it's also important that we present our work well too. After all, that's why a lot of books are made into movies. So to help with today's lesson, please help me welcome a very special guest. She is also a CU alum and she is also my lovely wife. Mrs. Kelly Taylor Walsh," added Brandon.
The class starts to clap as Kelly gets up.
Maggie has a shocked look on her face.
"Wish me luck," said Kelly.
"Yeah...good luck," said Maggie still very shocked.
Kelly walks down the steps towards Brandon.
Brandon smiles and claps. He hands her a microphone.
"Hi everybody. Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm Kelly Walsh. I'm the …," said Kelly.
We don't hear what Kelly is saying but we hear people smiling and listening attentively to Kelly talking. Occasionally, she would glance at Brandon. And every time she does, she can find Brandon smiling at her. And she would always smile back.
Coming Next - Everybody makes their way to Brandon and Kelly's baby shower.
