Chpt 61 - Before the Birth (Push)

"Hey Bren…how is she?" said Brandon.

"Something is wrong. We're going to the hospital right now," replied Brenda.

"What's wrong? Is she having the baby early?" asked Brandon.

"I dunno. Her stomach just started to hurt. I hope it's nothing," replied Brenda.

"Ok. Should we meet you guys there?" asked Brandon starting to panic.

"Yes, we're leaving now," replied Brenda.

"Ok," said Brandon.

Brandon turns off his phone.

"We gotta go. There's something wrong with Kelly," said Brandon.

Both, Steve and Dylan's phone vibrates. They pull them out and they both get a text.

"I just got a text from Janet," said Steve.

"And I just got one from Brenda,' said Dylan.

"What's wrong?" asked Nat.

"I don't know. Kelly's stomach is hurting," replied Brandon getting up from the booth.

"Contractions?" asked Nat.

"I don't know. I mean, she's not due for another month," replied Brandon.

"Then what is it?" asked Nat.

"I don't know," replied Brandon.

Brandon, Dylan, and Steve rush towards the door.

"Brandon, I'll be there shortly," said Nat.

"Ok," said Brandon.

They leave the Peach Pit.

Kelly is on a hospital bed with her gown on. Brandon and Silver are in the room with her. Dr. Long comes in.

"Hello everybody," said Dr. Long.

"Hello," said Silver and Brandon.

"Hi Dr. Long," said Kelly.

"Hi Kelly. How are you feeling?" asked Dr. Long.

"I'm better now but I was feeling a sharp pain in my stomach," replied Kelly.

"Good. I'm glad you're feeling better. We're running some tests from the scan now. It should be just contractions," said Dr. Long.

"Contractions? But I'm not due for another month?" asked Kelly.

"Well, yes. But due dates can change," replied Dr. Long.

Kelly has a worried look.

"But don't worry. It's not 100% yet. We're double checking right now," said Dr. Long.

"Ok. Thanks Dr. Long," said Kelly.

"No problem; I'll be back shortly to check on you," said Dr. Long.

"Ok," said Kelly.

"Thanks Dr. Long," said Brandon.

"You're welcome," said Dr. Long.

Dr. Long leaves the room.

"Wow. Talk about a big change of plans," said Silver.

"Tell me about it. I need to notify Harry. Someone has to take care of Sammy," said Kelly who looks stressed out.

"Kel, don't worry. We're all here for you," said Brandon.

Kelly turns and looks at Brandon who gives her a weak smile. She doesn't respond to Brandon.

Silver notices the tension.

"Why don't I leave you two alone? I'll tell everyone outside," said Silver.

"Thanks Silver," said Kelly.

Silver leaves the room.

Brandon senses the silence in the room. He moves the chair behind him closer towards Kelly. Kelly notices but doesn't say anything.

Brandon slowly reaches over and holds Kelly's right hand.

"You're hands are so cold," said Brandon chuckling a little trying to get Kelly to react.

"Are you cold? Can I get a blanket or something?" asked Brandon.

"No, I'm fine," replied Kelly, who's not paying much attention to Brandon.

"Kel, if I haven't said it enough, I'm sorry for what I said. I really am," said Brandon.

"That's fine. I heard you. You said what you need to say. I don't blame you for being honest," said Kelly.

"I just didn't want to you get to hurt; that's all," said Brandon.

"Well, I did. So you win, ok? You were right," said Kelly raising her voice.

"Kel, what are you talking about?" asked Brandon confused by Kelly's anger.

"Weren't you listening to Dr. Long?" asked Kelly.

"Yeah. She said it was contractions," replied Brandon.

"What if it's not? What if it was because I injured myself with the vibrator?" asked Kelly.

"Kel, don't say that," replied Brandon.

"Why not? You were honest with me. Why can't I do the same with you?" asked Kelly.

"You can always be honest with me. But I don't want you to think negative. This is our baby we're talking about here," replied Brandon.

"Fine," said Kelly.

They stayed quiet for a few moments.

"You know, last night, I was thinking maybe we can go somewhere before the baby comes – just the two of us. I mean, I don't know where yet but I think it'll be fun to get away. I know it's too late to do this now but…." said Brandon trying to change the subject.

"Brandon, I'm sorry to spoil your plans but it'll really help me out if you can come back into reality and know that I'm going into labor. So, I'm sorry for ruining your surprise but we can't go on a trip now," replied Kelly.

"I didn't mean now. I meant later this year, when we're all settled," said Brandon.

"A baby needs to be taken care of. I just can't leave her," said Kelly.

"I get that. What I don't get is why are you so angry with me," said Brandon.

"I wouldn't be if you stop bringing up things that we can't do. I don't know if you realize that I could be going into labor any moment now but it would really help me out a lot if you can get caught up very quickly because I'm not in the mood to play games with you," said Kelly.

"You're right. I guess I shouldn't waste my time trying to earn your forgiveness then" said Brandon who looks hurt.

"I'm sorry, Kel. I'm sorry for everything that I've done that made you so angry with me. You're the one who's been through this before…I know. I know it was hard raising Sammy on your own. I wish I can change that but I can't," added Brandon.

"I'll leave you alone," said Brandon.

Brandon gets up and walks out.

Kelly gets teary in her eyes.

Brandon walks out and unexpectedly sees Silver. Silver sees Brandon.

"Hi," said Brandon.

"Hi," said Silver.

"How much did you hear?" asked Brandon.

"Not all of it. I told everyone about Kelly and figured I'd come back and check on you guys," replied Silver.

Brandon gives Silver a quick depressing nod.

"Thanks for telling everyone," said Brandon.

Brandon leans his back against the wall and puts his hands on his face in misery.

Silver goes to him and catches him off guard with a hug. They hug.

"Thanks. What was that for?" asked Brandon letting go the hug.

"I just thought you needed one," replied Silver.

"Thanks," said Brandon with a weak smile.

"Don't let her get to you. She's pregnant," said Silver.

"You know, that's what I thought at first. But now, it just feels like she meant everything that she said. And she's right…what do I know about taking care of her while she's pregnant? She's done it all by herself before. I don't know if I should even be in there while she's having the baby," said Brandon.

"I can't believe you are saying these things," said Silver.

"Imagine if Kelly heard you….she'll be so hurt by that," added Silver.

"How can it get any worse? She's practically telling me that I'm useless and I'm not wanted," asked Brandon.

"Yes it can get worse…your job is to make sure it doesn't," replied Silver.

"And how do I do that?" asked Brandon.

"Be there for her...no matter what she says," replied Silver.

Brandon looks at Silver with a mean look.

"Just go back in there and not say anything," added Silver.

"What's the worst that could happen?" asked Silver.

"She can make me feel even worse about myself," replied Brandon.

"What? Then you'll never talk to her again? She's still your wife," said Silver.

"I know and I will talk to her. I just want to give her her space. She went through a lot today," said Brandon.

"But you're going to be in there when she has the baby, right?" asked Silver.

"Yes, I will. I won't miss that," replied Brandon.

"Good," said Silver who leans and gives Brandon a hug.

Everyone else is sitting in the waiting room.

Brenda is holding Abigail.

"Are you excited? Soon, you will have a little cousin to play with," said Brenda softly to Abigail.

"Hey Bren, you wanna go grab some coffee or something?" asked Dylan.

"No, I'm ok," replied Brenda.

"Well, maybe we can take a walk or something," said Dylan.

"Now?" asked Brenda.

"Yeah, why not? It's going to be a while till Kelly has the baby," said Dylan.

"Well, I want to be here for Kelly. She's going through a lot right now," said Brenda.

"Why can't you do the same?" asked Brenda.

"I'm all for that. But look at us. We're just sitting here. Do you expect me to sit here for hours?" asked Dylan.

"Do whatever you want. I'm staying here," said Brenda.

"Fine," said Dylan who gets up and walks away.

Brenda gives a Dylan look at she watches him walking away.

"Hey, do you think we have time to get Kelly a different gift?" asked Janet.

"Sure…but do you think it's the most appropriate thing to do now?" asked Steve.

"C'mon…we get a do-over," replied Janet.

"Honey, I'm surprised, I'm actually being the responsible one here," said Steve.

"What?" asked Janet surprised by Steve's comment.

"We're here in a hospital and you're still talking about a present," said Steve.

"Kelly's fine. The worst case scenario is she has the baby early," said Janet defending herself.

"That's what I hope. But I've known Kelly for a long time. I just think of the worst whenever Kelly is in the hospital," said Steve giving Janet a serious look.

"You're right," said Janet giving Steve a weak smile.

Steve puts his arm around her and pulls her closer to him.

Brandon stands alone in a quiet hallway. He is on the phone.

"They're looking into it right now. She might be having the baby early," said Brandon.

"A month early? That seems really early," said Cindy.

"Yeah, I know," said Brandon.

"How's Sammy doing?" asked Brandon.

"He's fine. But he's been asking about Kelly. What should I tell him?" asked Cindy.

"That mom might be having the baby soon. Don't mention anything about the pain in her stomach. I don't want to worry him," replied Brandon.

"Ok. We'll be there soon," said Cindy.

"Ok. Thanks mom…bye," said Brandon.

"Bye honey," said Cindy.

Brandon walks to the door to Kelly's room and looks in. He sees her smiling and talking with someone. Brandon looks off to the side and sees Dylan inside the room with Kelly. He reaches for the knob and starts to turn it but stops. He turns around and walks away.

Dylan and Kelly are inside Kelly's hospital room.

"You know, I still remember almost everything that day," said Dylan.

"Really?" asked Kelly.

"Yeah. I mean, that was a really special day for the both of us," replied Dylan.

"Yeah, it was," smiled Kelly.

"That was the day that I found out I won $10 from the lottery," said Dylan joking.

"You jerk," laughed Kelly joking.

"Oh, you were referring to the other thing," replied Dylan joking.

"Yeah, I guess that was pretty special," added Dylan.

Kelly laughs.

"He's pretty special to me," said Kelly.

"He's a great kid…he's lucky to have such good parents," said Dylan.

"Yeah, I like to think so," said Kelly.

"The perfect family is just about to get a little more perfect," said Dylan.

"I hope so. I just hope Brandon will be ok. I'm worried about him," said Kelly.

"Kel, it's none of my business but you got to cut the guy some slack. I mean, he's always thinking the worse case scenario, especially when it comes to you," said Dylan.

"But doesn't that frighten you? Because it frightens me. I don't want him to lose it whenever he thinks I'm doing something wrong. Being overprotective isn't good for anyone," said Kelly.

"I remember after I got shot, he was more messed up than I was. We were at the movies one time and some guy accidently bumped into me and I fell. The guy helped me up and Brandon pushed the guy away as if the guy was going to hurt me," added Kelly.

"He's a boyscout. I'm not a boyscout but when it comes to you, Kel; I probably would've acted the same way," said Dylan.

"Great, you're taking his side," said Kelly.

"I'm not taking sides. You guys are about to have another baby. He's here this time. It's not good to bottle up all this anger. That's not good baby for anyone, especially the baby, Kel," said Dylan.

"You're right," said Kelly.

"When did you get so psychological?" asked Kelly.

"I dunno. It may be Brenda talking here," replied Dylan smiling.

Kelly chuckles.

"How are you two doing?" asked Kelly.

"Eh, it's going ok. On our way here, I suggested that we stay at a hotel room and have some time for ourselves before coming over to see guys," replied Dylan.

"She took it as an excuse for me to get busy," added Dylan.

"Were you?" asked Kelly.

"Well….if we were both in the mood…and only if she didn't mind…and only if the baby was asleep…then hey, why not?" asked Dylan.

"Gotcha," replied Kelly.

"Hey, I'm only a guy. I got needs," said Dylan.

"Uh Huh. And here I thought with your big speech that you've changed. But you are the same ol Dylan McKay that I've known for almost 30 years," said Kelly.

"God, has it been that long already?" asked Dylan.

"Yeah, I think so," replied Kelly.

"Man, 30 years. How did we arrive here? Together? In the same room together?" asked Dylan.

"I dunno….but I'm glad you're here with me now," replied Kelly.

They both smile at each other.

They look each other in silence.

We hear a knock on the door.

"Come in," said Kelly.

Dr. Long and Brandon walk in.

"Hi…is this a good time?" asked Dr. Long.

"Yes. So, how am I doing, Dr. Long?" asked Kelly acting nervous.

"Kelly, do you have any plans for the next 24-36 hours?" asked Dr. Long.

"No….why?' asked Kelly worried.

"Your cervix is almost dilated. So your water should break any moment now. If that's going to happen within the next few hours, it'll save you guys a trip coming back here," replied Dr. Long.

"Oh wow. Any news on why this is so early?" asked Kelly.

"No, we probably just didn't the date correctly. These things happen," replied Dr. Long.

"Ok. Thanks," said Kelly.

"So, everything's ok. Nothing's wrong?" asked Brandon.

"No, everything's fine," replied Dr. Long.

"Kel, you said your stomach was hurting earlier, right?" asked Brandon.

"Yeah. I didn't remember it hurting that way when I went into labor with Sammy," replied Kelly.

"It's different because you're not in labor yet. As far as I know, it was probably just cramps or stomach pains. That's normal," said Dr. Long.

"Ok, that's a relief," said Brandon.

"Thanks Doctor Long," said Kelly.

"You're welcome. I'll be back to check on your shortly. If your water breaks, just press the side button and I'll come running," said Dr. Long.

"Ok. Thanks," said Kelly.

Dr. Long smiles and walks out of the room.

"That's a relief, huh?" asked Brandon.

"Yeah, it is," replied Kelly.

Brandon looks at Dylan.

"Hey D," said Brandon.

"Hey B, how's it going?" asked Dylan.

"A little better now…am I interrupting you two?" asked Brandon.

"No, Kel and I were just catching up on old times," replied Dylan.

"Good," said Brandon giving everyone a weak smile.

"Why don't I leave you two alone? Maybe Brenda needs my help with something," said Dylan.

"Thanks for staying, Dylan," said Brandon.

"Anytime, B," said Dylan.

They hug.

Dylan gives a small wave to Kelly.

Kelly smiles back.

Dylan leaves and closes the door behind him.

Brandon takes a seat.

"Glad to see you smiling again," said Brandon.

"Thanks. Me too. Having a baby is always a good reason to smile," replied Kelly.

Brandon smiles.

"Kel, I know you're still very mad at me. But if it's ok with you, I would love to be in here with you during the birth," said Brandon.

"Of course; I wouldn't have it any other way," said Kelly smiling at Brandon.

"I'm sorry for what I said. I love you so much. I just don't want anything bad to happen to you," said Brandon.

"I know. I love you too," said Kelly.

Brandon leans up and kisses Kelly. They really get into the kiss.

Kelly suddenly feels something and breaks the kiss.

"Kel, what is it?" asked Brandon.

"Did I hurt you?" asked Brandon.

"No…um, I think my water just broke," replied Kelly.

"Oh. Ok, let me get Dr. Long back," said Brandon.

A few moments go by and we see Dr. Long, and Brandon wheeling out Kelly out of the room.

"Ok Kelly. Be ready because the contractions are going to get stronger each time," said Dr. Long.

"Ok," said Kelly breathing heavily.

Brandon extends her hand to Kelly as they go into the delivery room.

They smile at each other.

"I'm glad you're here," said Kelly smiling.

"Me too," said Brandon giving Kelly a quick kiss.

Silver walks in to the waiting room.

"Ok, Kelly is officially in labor," said Silver excited.

"Oh wow. This is so exciting. I think it so great that we're all together to share this moment," said Brenda.

"Yeah. I just wish labor would be quicker," said Dylan.

"Well, sorry to disappoint you, Dylan that the miracle of birth takes time," said Brenda.

"Bren, why are you always on case lately?" asked Dylan.

"Because you keep making snarky comments," replied Brenda.

"All I said was I wish it was quicker….That's all I said," said Dylan.

"Fine Dylan. You made your comment. Just be quiet now. You're upsetting Abby," said Brenda.

"Fine. I'm just going to leave then," said Dylan.

"I'm sure Kelly would want it to be quicker," said Dylan who gets up.

He walks away.

"Aren't you going to go after him?" asked Janet.

"No. I think we just need our space…we've been fighting since we got on the plane," replied Brenda.

"I guess Dylan is not really into kids, huh?" asked Janet.

"I dunno. I mean, he was great with Abby when we got back together. Then all of a sudden, he just seems to be losing interest in taking care of anyone but himself," replied Brenda.

"Oh well, I can relate to that. Steve and I were pretty scared about being parents…and we're doing ok," said Janet.

"But Steve has no choice since he's the father. Dylan's not Abby's father. I just don't want Abby to get to know Dylan and then see him leave. It would be so heartbreaking to Abby," said Brenda.

"I don't think Dylan would do that to you guys," said Janet.

"Really? Just look at Sammy. He left even when he thought he was his father," said Brenda.

"He can still change," said Janet.

"I hope so. Because Abby and I come together as a package deal," said Brenda.

"I think you guys will be just fine," said Janet.

"I sort of wish what I have what Brandon and Kelly have," said Brenda.

"That's not a bad way to live," said Janet.

"Them finding love in each other again after being apart for so many years. I mean, I know my brother couldn't stop talking about Kelly after he left L.A.," said Brenda quietly to Janet.

"Oh wow. How did he take the news of Dylan and Kelly?" asked Janet whispering.

"He's always wound up about that. But my brother has always tried to hide his feelings and let someone else be happy even if means sacrificing his own happiness," replied Brenda.

"I remember Brandon being that way too. But I always see him as a type of guy who I always want to root for. I mean, I only known him for a year before he left…but I can see it's hard not to love him," said Janet.

"I couldn't put it better myself. Dylan, Steve, and I all consider him as our best friend of all time," said Brenda.

Steve joins them.

"Did someone mention my name?" asked Steve taking a seat next to Janet.

"Yeah. Brenda just told me that Brandon's your best friend," said Janet.

"Yeah, so?" asked Steve.

"You guys may be friends in school. But I'm your wife and I've given birth to two kids. I must say I'm quite disappointed of your choice" replied Janet.

"Eh….I'm sorry?" asked Steve.

Janet and Brenda laugh.

Brandon and Kelly are in the delivery room. Dr. Long and a nurse are with them. Kelly is giving birth.

Brandon is holding Kelly's hand as she is pushing.

"Ok Kelly. You're doing great. Keep going," said Dr. Long.

"Oooo..I….I don't know if I can…I'm getting dizzy," said Kelly.

"C'mon Kel. You're almost there. I can see the head," said Brandon.

Kelly takes a few deep breaths and starts to push again. She is breathing heavily.

"Oh, I can see the hands and shoulders now," said Brandon.

Kelly stops pushing but is still breathing heavily.

"Brandon?" asked Kelly breathing heavily.

"You can do this," replied Brandon.

"I dunno. I don't have any energy left," said Kelly.

"You're almost there. Just one more big push," said Dr. Long.

"Brandon…I…." said Kelly sounding tired.

"C'mon. You can do this…it'll all be over after this," said Brandon who leans and gives Kelly a kiss.

Kelly gives Brandon a weak smile.

"Ooooo," said Kelly she gives everything she had in that final push.

The baby's head comes out and we hear her crying.

Brandon glances over and sees his new born baby.

"Here she is," said Dr. Long holding the baby.

Brandon glances at Kelly who smiles.

"Would you like to cut the umbilical cord?" asked Dr. Long.

"Yes," replied Brandon.

The nurse hands Brandon a pair of scissors and he cuts the umbilical cord.

"Oh, she's so tiny," said Brandon.

"Here Kel," said Brandon glancing back at Kelly who looks like she's sleeping.

"Kelly?" asked Brandon who has a worried voice.

"Eh…Dr. Long…I think Kelly is unconscious," said Brandon.

Dr. Long and the nurse come to Kelly who is not responding.

"Kelly? Kelly?" asked Dr. Long trying to check for a pulse.

"Ok. No pulse. No heartbeat. Call for backup," said Dr. Long to the nurse.

"Is she going to be alright?" asked Brandon who looks really worried.

"I hope so. We'll do our best," replied Dr. Long who is adjusting the medical equipment around Kelly.

"Requesting immediate medic to delivery room 43R," said the nurse on the phone.

"A few others are coming. Brandon, if you can please move to the side and give us some room, that'll be great," said Dr. Long.

"Dr. Long. You got to save her!" said Brandon panicking.

"We'll do everything that we can. You need to take care of our daughter now and let us do our job," said Dr. Long.

People rushed in and start to perform on Kelly.

Brandon stares at Kelly with a sad face as he holds a crying baby. He looks down at her newborn daughter with a worried look.

To be continued….
