The sun's rays began to creep through the curtain that didn't completely close the window of Wallabee Beetles' room. The temperature was rising little by little due to the typical summer weather. The boy was still lying on his bed and he woke up without opening his eyes. He pulled the blanket off his body because it caused him discomfort, but still he felt something was wrong. He shifted on his bed and suddenly felt a strange bulge next to him, an invader on his bed.
When he saw the memories of the night before, he opened his eyes with a start and sat on his bed immediately and observed the girl who was still asleep next to him, very comfortable still hugging her teddy bear. Kuki was still in his bed, they had slept together all night.
"It can't be, Kuki," he tried to modulate his voice without yelling or looking upset. If his parents discovered that the girl had not slept in her room as she had ruled, it was likely that both teenagers would be punished. And it's not like he did something bad to the girl, he couldn't. To anyone's eyes, that scene could be misinterpreted.
He gently shook her several times to wake her up and not scare her. The black-haired woman shifted and instead, he settled further between the pillows.
"Five minutes more," she complained.
"We don't have time for this, wake up now"
"I want to sleep," she murmured.
"Come on Kuki, if my mom finds you here we're toast. You slept in my bed last night," said the boy somewhat altered.
Kuki opened her eyes and found Wally's worried face, a different bed than hers and of course, another room. She had fallen asleep in Wally's room and they had even slept together. It really wasn't the first time they slept together, but usually their other friends were always together being part of the sleepover.
"Oh no, I fell asleep here." She started and got out of bed as fast as she could.
"I already noticed but don't yell"
"Why didn't you wake me up earlier?" The girl exclaimed, hugging her stuffed animal.
"I don't know. Maybe I was asleep too? Now the important thing is that you go back without my mother noticing, I mean, I don't think she will bother but I want to avoid lecturing myself at this time of the morning"
"Okay, calm down." What time is it?" asks the girl looking for a clock in the room.
"It's 7:30," answered Wally looking at his cell phone "At this time mom gets Joey ready and that, I'm going to check if she's in her room or if she's downstairs so you can go out"
"Okay," Kuki agreed with some panic, the boy made it look like they had really done something wrong. "But if your mother realizes, I don't think it's that bad"
"We are no longer children Kuki" he went to the door and opened it to look down the hall, everything looked calm and silent "Ok, there are no moors on the coast, go now" he let the girl pass with a hurried step into her room and entered as fast as she could. Wally let out a big sigh when the girl closed the door, he was saved. What was he thinking? Kuki was in his bed, in his room, alone. His face was red from just remembering it.
Kuki, already safe in his room, felt the same way, with his heart racing. What if he had taken advantage of her? No, of course not, Wally was not that kind of guy. He would never do something like that. He also took her out of her room as soon as he woke up and realized that she was still there. The sound of her cell phone ringing from her brought her out of her thoughts, her mother was calling her.
"Hi Kuki, did I wake you up?" Her mother spoke first.
"No mom, I was already awake"
"Good, I'm really sorry I can't be home with you. Things got complicated and your father does everything possible so that the paperwork is done quickly but you already know that the paperwork takes time," she apologized.
"Don't worry, how is Grandma?" I guess it's hard to lose a child"
"Well, the fact that we are here has helped her a lot, although your uncle was not very close to the family, as soon as he reached the age of majority he went to live alone, a shame that he had to get sick like that"
"I'm sorry about what happened to the uncle, I want to feel sad about it but I hardly remember it mom," the girl commented as she sat on the edge of the bed, she passed her attention to Wally's rainbow monkey that she still held in her hands.
"You don't have to be, calm down my girl"
"And when do they come back?" The girl asked hopefully.
"We will do our best to return before your sister returns from the camp, I promise you."
Kuki kept chatting with her mother until she heard noises outside, she ended the call and opened the door. He saw Mrs. Beetles scolding Joey because somehow that kid always found a way to get upset in the morning. Wally suddenly appeared arguing something with his mother and then the lady realized that the girl was looking at them.
"Good morning Kuki, I was almost leaving. Leave cooked food in the refrigerator. I'm late, we'll talk later, "said Mrs. Beatles as she pulled the youngest of the siblings down the hall toward the stairs.
"Have a beautiful day, Mrs. Beatles," was the only thing she could manage to say to her before he saw her come down the stairs with the boy next to her.
"Well, what do you want to do today?" The girl asked, turning to the blonde.
"I'll go to the gym today," he replied reluctantly.
"Can I go with you?"
"You go to the gym? Don't make me laugh," he said laughing. "It's not a place like those that you like full of monkeys and pink things"
"For your information, I have been there several times."
"Really? I would like to see you on top of one of the machines" he looked at her and saw that she had gotten angry -"Okay, you can come but I don't want to hear complaints"
"No more than you do. See you downstairs in half an hour," the girl exclaimed angrily and locked herself in the room. Wally snorted and locked himself in her room as well.
After half an hour, both teenagers went down to have a light breakfast since they were going to do physical activity and the least they wanted was to suffer from indigestion. Of course, Wally couldn't ignore that the girl was not wearing her usual long-sleeved sweaters, she had put on a black short-sleeved shirt close to her body and green sports shorts with white stripes on the sides. Was it necessary to show so much?
The boy had to strain to ignore the fact that Kuki wore less clothes than usual and then they went out to the gym together. Wally was carrying both his and Kuki's sports bag. They didn't talk much on the way, actually Kuki felt a bit embarrassed for having slept with Wally alone in her room. Although it was pretty clear that absolutely nothing had happened, she couldn't ignore that she had slept with a boy, especially him. Her heart jumped strangely that morning due to the swirl of thoughts and emotions she felt.
Actually, Wally was surprised to think that taking her to the gym with him wasn't going all that bad. After a while, Kuki made interesting conversations with him, encouraged him to finish the routines, even made an effort to use the same machines that he frequented, of course in smaller times and series since the girl was not used to her routine. The girl was aware that both are adequately hydrated between exercises. He always imagined being able to do those things with Hoagie or Nigel, but neither of his two close friends seemed interested in exercising.
After the girl wanted to finish her workout on the treadmill, Wally left her alone so she could lift some weights. He had to move to the other side of the gym to do it. While at it, a girl with dark brown hair wearing pigtails approaches the blonde to talk to him.
"As lonely as ever Wallabee," the girl greeted him. When Wally realized who it was he smirked.
"You can call me Wally, only my mom says that to me"
"Sure, how's everything?" The girl asks, putting a hand on her waist.
"Well, not much, the usual I think. Today I didn't come alone," he says looking at Kuki, luckily the girl was walking towards him but she was still a bit far from her. "I brought a friend"
"A friend? Wow that is a surprise"
When Kuki got close enough, she realized that Wally was talking to a girl who made too many movements with her body close to him. She clearly was flirting with him. Actually, the girls always approached Wally, but perhaps it would be the first time that she saw that he was following the conversation, that made her feel a jump in his heart, Is she the girl that Wally was talking about?
"Kuki, there you are," he says when she got close enough to talk to him, "She's Virginia and usually comes to the gym the same days that I do," he commented naturally.
"So you are Wally's friend", the girl extended her hand and Kuki took it with some uncertainty "A pleasure, as he already said my name is Virginia." What a surprise to see him accompanied, he almost always comes alone"
"Yes… ah… today I came with Wally"
"I'm going to change," Wally tells the girls and passes his bag to Kuki. That gesture was not overlooked by Virginia and she looked in more detail at the Japanese woman and her gestures. When the blonde entered the locker room, the brunette moved closer to Kuki.
"So you're friends with Wally. Do you know if he has a girlfriend?"
"Well ... not that I know of ... I'm not sure," she blushed suddenly. Why was she intimidated by the girl he had just met? First of all, she kept looking her up and down. Second, her gaze was a cross between annoyance and curiosity and third, she was surely misinterpreting everything.
"Really? Such a cute boy like him. But I'm glad that his friend tells me that he doesn't have a girlfriend, that means I would have a chance with him, don't you think?"
Kuki felt uncomfortable. Especially when Virginia emphasized the word "friend." She didn't know what to answer. Luckily for Kuki, she spotted Wally approaching. She lowered her gaze and told him that she would change too and disappeared into the girls' locker room without saying a word.
"Did something happen while I was gone?" Wally says to Virginia. She just smiles.
"Not at all. Your friend is kind of weird. Have you been friends for a long time?" She asks him with an innocent look, trying to get all the necessary information out of him without the Australian noticing.
"She is always like that but she is my best friend, she is nice when you meet her"
Wally and Virginia kept talking while Kuki tried to change and groom himself as quickly as his nerves would allow. He didn't like something about that girl, it was quite obvious that she was interested in Wally. She couldn't be upset about it could she?
"I'm ready," Kuki said, interrupting the teenagers' conversation. He noticed a certain disgust on Virginia's face but decided to ignore it.
Wally said goodbye to Virginia and Kuki could barely speak to say goodbye to her, after that they left the establishment in silence. The strange attitude of the girl was immediately noticed by the blonde but she did not understand why she seemed to be upset.
"Would you like to go for some cheese nachos?" Wally asks, hoping that some food will change the strange attitude of the Japanese a bit.
"Sure," the girl replied, smiling at him. She wouldn't let a girl that only Wally saw from time to time at the gym ruin her day with him, after all they were alone now and in her mind, that was a date.
Wally seeing her smile couldn't help but blush. The girl sometimes drove him crazy.
They continued going out to eat, to walk, to the arcade, in the following days and Kuki counted the days for the special night where they would see the night of stars together, while his parents did not show signs of returning yet.
