Kuki closed the call she had with Abby for at least 15 minutes and then stared at the screen until they turned off. Everything seemed unreal. How was it possible that Wally went to Abby's house to ask her to go to the dance with him? Did he like her?
"You know how Wally acts without thinking"
"He probably would have asked you the same day, you know how shy he is about those things"
"Look on the bright side, there are many girls at school who swoon over him even if you don't realize it, now that I'm going with him, I'll keep an eye on him"
"I don't want to get your hopes up, but I think we could exchange partners for a while and you would dance with Wally"
"No matter what gossip you hear in the bathrooms or the living room or wherever, Wally and I are just friends, don't believe anything you hear at all."
Abby, her best friend, would never do anything to hurt her, but still, she felt a bit worried about how things turned out. Ace was a good boy and he made her laugh, but she had to make it clear to him that she just wanted to be her friend and not something else.
She continued to see the screen of her cell phone that was kept off and suddenly, it turned on with the name of Wally. Was he calling her? Now that was new. She let his rainbow money tone play a couple of times and then she answered.
"Hello?" She answered the call as calmly as she could, she didn't want to sound too excited because Wally was calling her.
"Hello, Kuki," he replied. After that, he didn't know what else to add. To tell the truth, he didn't think much of it and he was pretty sure she wouldn't answer him.
"So… did you want to tell me something?" asks the girl, noticing that Wally didn't say anything at all.
"Well, I... I think I shouldn't have called, I'm sorry..."
"No wait, don't hang up," the girl begged, interrupting him. "I'm glad you called," she said, holding on to her cell phone.
"Really? I thought you hated me."
"I don't hate you, Wally, it's just that... well, you know... we always argue but…"
"I ruined everything, didn't I?
Kuki thought about what Wally said. If things between them weren't so complicated, their relationship could be so different, but then, they wouldn't be themselves. Somehow, they complemented each other and had things in common, despite fighting numerous times.
"Are you still there?
"Oh I'm sorry. Yes, if I'm still here," she apologized for not saying anything earlier, "May I ask why you called me?
"Does it bother you?" Wally asked in a sad tone.
"No, not at all it's just that… you don't do it often."
"Well, I was in your room. My mom left the door open and I walked in and I saw your monkey here and I thought I should call you and say something…"
"Wait, did you just say my room?" Kuki couldn't help but blush and when Wally realized what he had said he slammed his palm on her forehead. What a shame.
"Yes well that… Does it matter? Who cares? you were here so long that I already see it as yours. Okay listen," he gave a heavy sigh and then continued, "You're my friend Kuki, I wouldn't want some boy to bother you or give you a hard time. Do you really know that boy who invited you?
"What I've gotten to know about Ace, he makes me believe that he's a nice person."
"Okay," he said with some annoyance, "That's enough for me, but if he bothers or does something you don't want, I'll break his face personally."
"I hope that isn't necessary, Wally," the girl laughed. She felt a little better now that Wally had called her, she hoped he behaves like that every day.
Wally didn't want the conversation to end but they both had to sleep. She said goodbye and hung up. That night, Wally slept in that room that was Kuki's, especially because his perfume was still impregnated in the pillows and somehow he felt in a safe place.
The next day, Abby was in the bathrooms as usual, listening to school gossip. There were three things that caught his attention.
First of all, she was finding out effortlessly who already had a partner and who didn't. When they approached her to ask her about her condition and her dance partner, the girl only said that they already found out about her, although many of them already suspected who was.
Second, the girls were heartbroken because it was already very likely that the most handsome boys had a partner. More than one of them almost had a heart attack when Fanny Fulbright casually said that she was going with Patton Drilovsky, because they had their eye on him too. The truth was that Fanny was a little jealous and threatened several with her fists to stay away from him.
The third thing, Chad Dickson already had a couple for the dance, a second year lady named Lydia Brown, the current leader of the cheerleaders. They all found that too obvious, as they had been seen quite a bit together in the last week.
Walking out of the bathroom, she could see Hoagie and Alice holding hands as they headed to their respective classrooms. Although she always pretended that she didn't care about the couple at all, the truth is that she was dying inside. She never managed to understand what happened, that they split up and somehow Alice got close to Hoagie and won him over.
"If you stop looking at them that way it will be easier," Wally commented, causing the girl to jump in fright.
"Do you want to kill Abby with a heart attack?" The brunette asked, putting a hand on her chest to calm her pulse. Wow, Wally had given her quite a scare.
"It's what I do when I see Kuki talking to Ace, the perfect one," he rolled her eyes at her mentioning it. He honestly couldn't stand it anymore, but he had to make an effort for Kuki to be happy and to continue being his friend.
"Looks like you have competition," she crossed her arms looking at Wally and he just looked away from her.
"Yes, well, I was looking for you to tell you that I'll pick you up tomorrow at…" He can't continue what she was saying because Abby covered her mouth with her hands.
"Shhhh!" Are you crazy?" She said looking everywhere and taking him to a more secluded place "You can't say things like that in the corridors Wally. Everything about the dance we discuss in private or by message."
"What the…?
"Stop it. Listen to me for once in your life Wallabee."
"Agh, but how annoying you are," he finally said when he freed himself from the girl. He knew Abby wouldn't call him by her full name if the situation wasn't life or death.
And so, the most anticipated night of high school teenagers arrived. Homecoming dance time. Those who already had a car parked around the high school, very close to the gym where the dance would take place. Some parents left their children at the entrance where a photographer was waiting for them who would be in charge of photographing each couple with his camera.
Nigel helped Rachel out of her father's car while she adjusted her dress and her hair. It was a bit windy that night and she didn't want her freshly pressed hair to be ruined. The aquamarine dress had perplexed her boyfriend, being tight to her body, he had not realized Rachel's curves and how much she had grown. As for Nigel, he wore a red long-sleeved shirt with a silver tie, black pants, and to complement his look, he wore a black beret. Rachel thought that maybe she had dressed up too much but her English touch didn't take it away from anyone.
Hoagie arrived accompanied by his girlfriend Alice, who was wearing a long purple mermaid dress. They greeted Nigel as soon as they saw him and then without further ado, both couples entered the gym.
A few minutes later, getting out of a van, Ace appeared wearing an elegant chocolate-colored suit with his date, Kuki. The girl had opted to tie her hair in a high ponytail decorated by a pink bow and she was wearing a short pink sleeveless dress.
"I know I told you when I picked you up at your house, but you look like a star tonight," Ace told Kuki, placing a kiss on the palm of her hand, making the girl blush for such a gentlemanly act. .
"Oh cut it out Ace, I'm sure a lot of girls look more amazing than me tonight."
"That may be true, but I'm not more interested in anyone than you."
And right in the car that came behind, Wally and Abby appeared, causing some commotion among those present, mainly when they saw Abby, because for many, it is the first time they saw that the girl was wearing a dress.
Wally was wearing an orange long-sleeved shirt with a blue tie and gray pants. He had made an attempt to comb his hair and reveal a bit of his forehead and her green eyes but the wind hadn't really helped. But Abby earned the gaze and jealousy of many girls wearing that blue dress fitted to the body with straps and a lot of glitter, which one side opened up, highlighting her athletic legs, giving her a sexy touch. Her particular braid had been combed forward, causing it to drape over her chest. The Australian almost choked on the glass of water that Abby's mother offered him while she was waiting for her in the kitchen to come down from her and when she made her appearance, her mother burst into tears and hugged her tightly . When Wally got over the shock of seeing that her friend looked quite cute that night, Abby's mother then proceeded with the photos for her family album.
And again it seemed that he gasped for air, when he saw Kuki taking Ace's arm. Her new hairstyle and that dress, he practically froze. Abby had to tug on him several times for the blond to react and they could already enter the gym.
Wally had to watch with some discomfort as Kuki posed next to the "fellow he wanted to take away" for the photo. He bit his tongue not to say anything about it and not to ruin anyone's night.
Inside the enclosure, everything was perfectly decorated. Whoever organized the dance did an excellent job. White and light blue balloons with garlands hung from the ceiling, reflecting the rotating disco ball in the center. On the sides, large decorations of white flowers with bows and large tables of food and sandwiches. They had even hired a DJ who did good mixes and livened up the party with a lot of charisma.
"If that's not what my prom looks like, then I don't want anything," Abby said as she walked in and took in the whole place.
"Don't you think it's too much for a simple school dance?" asked Wally, somewhat irritated, feeling that everything was too exaggerated. Who had paid for all this?
Music blared and couples took over the dance floor. Nigel wouldn't let go of Rachel for a second. Hoagie and Alice chatted at ease sitting at one of the tables that had been placed so they could eat or rest. Kuki and Ace began to attract everyone's attention, as their dance steps were noticeable on the floor, which annoyed Wally and he just looked at them with a frown.
"Let's dance," Wally asked Abby, who was devouring some sandwiches.
"I didn't think you wanted to dance, babe," she looked at him strangely, but Wally's serious face told her that she couldn't reject him or say anything else to get out of it.
"If your foot starts to hurt tell me and we'll take a break" he offered her hand to the girl and she put the plate of food next to her and then took her hand.
It didn't take long for Wally and Abby's footsteps to start to show as well. At some point, both couples were left dancing alone on the dance floor while everyone looked around them.
"I didn't know you could dance like this," Abby commented as she let herself be carried away by the rhythm of her companion. "You had it well guarded."
"I don't like to brag about such things," he growled.
Kuki looked out of the corner of her eye as Wally and Abby danced to one side, little by little she lowered the rhythm of her dance with Ace and he seemed to notice that something was not right.
"Is something wrong, Kuki?," asks her companion, noticing that the girl looked a little off.
"I'm sorry…it's nothing. How about we go out for some punch?"
"Of course, I want something to drink too," he offered his arm to the girl and she took it in a hurry and they walked away from the dance floor. Abby could see out of the corner of her eye that the couple had left.
"I don't want to sound spoilsport, Wally, but I think we're drawing too much attention to ourselves."
"That again?" he asked annoyed, "Why can't we just have fun and spend the night? Trust me, I'm making an effort not to go break that guy's face."
"I'm sure that would be a show that I wouldn't miss ha ha ha."
"From here I see Nigel with Rachel, don't you want to go say hello?" Wally asked, changing the subject.
"Sure babe."
They both approached the couple who were taking sandwiches from one of the tables.
"I was wondering when the mortals would come to greet us," Nigel said, speaking with his mouth full and Rachel just looked at him with a frown.
"What are you talking about?" asked Wally, surprised.
"Everyone is talking about you and now that you've approached us, maybe they think we're popular too," Rachel commented excitedly.
"Trust me, Rachel, the last thing I want tonight is to win over half the female population of the school as potential enemies."
"Who knows," the girl shrugged, "By the way, Abigail, do you feel better?"
"Nothing a little painkiller my dad prescribed can fix. Later when my ankle bothers me I'll sit down to eat a third round of food."
"Seriously Abby, where do you fit so much food?" asked Wally looking at her. Her friend was very slender, he sometimes wondered where on her body so much food went.
After Nigel pays Abby a couple of compliments on her looks and Rachel gets emotional about it, because she influenced the decision to buy that beautiful dress, both couples return to the dance floor.
"Good night!" a voice was suddenly heard throughout the place "This is your DJ Chubby Z speaking, but what a spectacular night, let's do something fun to spice up this dance."
They all looked attentively at the DJ who was on top of a platform that had been set up at the back of the gym. Suddenly, the lights dimmed and soft music began to play.
"Oh yeah! I know what you think, the romantic evening is going to start but we are going to do it differently. Quick, swap partners now!
"Is this guy crazy?" Wally asked Abby but the girl didn't pay attention because she looked at both sides and then smiled. The girl tugged on his arm and they walked past a few couples until Kuki and Ace appeared in her field of vision.
"But what a surprise Kuki, who knew you were right next to me?" asked Abby pretending innocence while both Ace and Wally didn't know what to say.
"Hi, Abby," Kuki greeted her friend and soon knew that Abby was up to something.
"How about we swap partners?"
"Oh, well it's true that…"
"Have you guys swapped partners yet?" Come on, don't be shy" the DJ spoke again and taking advantage of her distraction, Abby took Kuki by the arm and brought her closer, making her stand next to Wally.
"Let's go even if it's for a couple of songs." Abby waved goodbye and approached Ace "No problem, right babe?"
"Um...yeah sure, let's dance," Ace said, having no other choice.
Many of the couples were already dancing to the soft song when Wally and Kuki got together. Somewhat clumsily, Wally took her by the waist and tried to find the rhythm of the song to guide the dance.
"I didn't know you danced Wally."
"I do what I can," he commented without looking at her.
"Wally…"
The boy, with some embarrassment, looked into her eyes and could see how radiant and beautiful she looked that night. That dress and his new hairstyle were messing with her hormones.
"And... How was your date?" asked Wally, making the girl sad a little.
"It's not a date," the girl clarified, "Ace has been... a good companion I think."
"You still came with him," Wally spoke quietly but the girl could hear him. "I… I wanted to invite you."
"What? Wally! Why didn't you say it before?" The girl was happy.
"It doesn't matter anymore Kuki. Now let's just... let's d-dance."
They were dancing like this for at least three songs. That DJ knew how to put people in the mood. Many had already returned with their corresponding partners but Kuki and Wally seemed to not hear anything other than them and the music. It was a magical moment, especially for her.
The reason why they kept dancing is that when Ace asked Abby that he wanted to go back to Kuki, the brunette started complaining about the pain in her ankle and asked the boy to help her sit down and get her some ice.
"That Wally owes me one," she said to herself as she watched Ace walk away to go to the punch area to try and get some ice.
"You changed your hairstyle," commented Wally talking to Kuki while they danced.
"Oh, thanks for noticing," the girl blushed.
"Look Kuki, there's something...
"Kuki!" Ace rushed towards the couple, ruining their moment, "Sorry Kuki seriously, I promised to take you home but my mom slipped down the stairs and it seems that she has broken her hand and I have to go immediately."
"Oh no," the girl put both hands to her mouth in surprise, "I'm so sorry to hear that, Ace. Is there anything he can do for you?"
"I'm worried about the fact that I can't take you home."
"I can take her," Wally interrupted them, "I can call my dad, she lives near her and…"
"Seriously thanks. What was your name?"
"Wally…" that question made him get a little angry but he couldn't blame him, it was the first time they spoke face to face.
"Yes, of course, thank you for taking my lady to her house." I'll talk to you later Kuki, I have to run" and before anyone could answer something, she ran away and got lost among the couples that were dancing on the floor.
"Lady?
"Don't worry about it Wally. He usually compliments me a lot.
Do not worry? Wally couldn't get that word out of his head the rest of the night. But despite that, they both danced until the dance ended. Abby chatted with some of the girls while she ate, and then Nigel, Rachel, Fanny, and Patton joined her at her table. From afar, she could see that the couple was still dancing and she was glad that they could finally be together.
