Lily:
After her conversation with Remus, they made their way back to Gryffindor Tower. Remus said goodnight and headed up to the boys' dorms. Lily stayed back a moment as something caught her eye. Someone's newspaper left abandoned on the table. She picked it up and flipped through. Sure enough she found the article Remus mentioned.
No Logic Behind Blood Purity
By Euphemia Potter
Dear Editor,
Mr. William's article last week regarding the so-called invasion of muggle-born witches and wizards into pureblood society should offend every member of the wizarding world. The influx of new members into the magical community should be celebrated, not feared. The arguments against muggle-borns have no basis in fact, and I am horrified that the Daily Prophet, the source of news so many of us depend on, would print such offensive and divisive lies.
Mr. Williams argued that the influx of new members into the magical community will increase the number of magical law infractions and risk the exposure of the wizarding world. In my more than 40 years at the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, I can tell you that this argument has no basis in reality. In fact, the crime rate among muggle-borns is lower than that of both mixed-blood and pureblood witches and wizards. There is no evidence to support the claim that there will be an increase in the crime rate.
Mr. Williams's next point, that if the wizarding population increases, there will be fewer opportunities for each person, is simply irrational. The increased population can only increase the opportunities for all of us. Focus on so-called blood purity results in a diminishing population and increase in genetic defects from inbreeding. Muggle-borns are quite literally saving the wizarding world from extinction, and we should welcome them with open arms.
The most offensive argument Mr. Williams covered in his article concerned the idea that muggle-born witches and wizards somehow stole their magic. As any witch or wizard should understand, a wand does not make the witch or wizard. Wands are not a source of magic, merely a vessel used to harness the magic in each of us. It is not possible to steal magic, and the accusation is insulting to the many talented muggle-born members of the magical community.
The demonization of muggle-borns is incredibly dangerous, and it is important for all of us to remember a few things. First, there is no fact behind the arguments against muggle-borns. Most importantly, there are real lives at stake in this fight. Real people are being harassed and even killed. We need to come together and embrace the expansion of the wizarding community rather than turning on each other.
