So, Not a Curse: Race to the Edge (Part 1) is pretty much ready to start getting written. I just want to wait until winter break so I can at least get the first few chapters out normally with little delay. That will be in December. As such, in honor of the long awaited "book" coming out soon, I'm posting all the songfics I've come up with that have to do with Hiccup's past and/or post meeting Toothless but pre RTTE. This includes a long awaited requested song I've been meaning to finish.
This is the first of the line up. Which just also happens to be the first chronologically, haha! What do ya know? Well, I know which one to do next then.
Prompt: A representation of Hiccup's nightmares from before she met Toothless
Song: Monster by Beth Crowley (Start from beginning of fic)
Turning into a Monster:
The air was still and murky, the sky gray and cold. Ash coated the roads and buildings, all worn and fragile. Hiccup stood in the middle of it all, frightened and alone within her own home of Berk.
Suddenly, something lurking in the shadows caught her eye, but she couldn't get a good look. A voice echoed, her own voice, but it wasn't coming from her. Hiccup twisted and turned, trying to locate the source of the voice she knew to be her own, but the shadows only seemed to grow thicker, hiding whoever it was. "If you knew the truth you'd probably hate me", it sang, then it's voice grew dark, sounding closer and closer as its echo faded. "Only one of us will make it out alive."
It's form suddenly appeared, standing up on one of the houses. Hiccup felt as if she couldn't breathe. It was her, but it wasn't. Instead of a human being, what jumped from roof to roof like a taunting predator was a demon with black wings, a tail, sharp fangs, claws, and patches of scales along her body and face, her clothes ragged like a wild beast. Her eyes were cold with pupils slit down the middle, her hair wild and messy, and she finally leaped to the ground before Hiccup, staring the frightened girl down with a cruel playfulness.
"I'm merciless, when will you learn?" she stalked forward, then gestured to the burnt village around them. Had this demon done this?
She came even closer, that playfulness still in her eyes, and Hiccup didn't understand why she couldn't move. Why couldn't she run from this monster? "I can hear your heartbeat drumming", she placed a clawed hand to her heart. Hiccup still couldn't move.
Her gaze became cold again, eyes narrowing. "Only one of us can make it out alive."
Suddenly the monster pushed her, Hiccup left staring up at the demon. She smiled down wickedly, presenting herself like some spectacle for Hiccup to witness. Somehow, Hiccup suddenly found the will to move, even if only to scoot away ever so slightly, but the monster only followed, marching towards her with that same twisted grin. "…when you least expect it you won't know it's coming…" Her claws sliced the air between them, then arms reached out.
She then came closer and closer, Hiccup trying to scoot further and further away, terrified of what the demon wanted. But then the demon's form suddenly dissolved into smoke and…absorbed into Hiccup's skin. She only watched helplessly as her body changed into something like the demon's before, and when the transformation was complete, terrified tears streaming down her face, Hiccup noticed her father and the village behind him, all staring with accusatory stares.
"I'm turning into a monster!" she cried and cried, wishing for her father's and people's stares to go away, that'd they'd just leave. She didn't want to hurt them. The last thing she wanted was to hurt anyone. She wanted the monster out. She needed her out! But no matter how hard she tried to will the demon back out, she wouldn't come out. "...and I'll strike. 'Cause I am a monster!"
Defeated, Hiccup fell to her knees in despair. "I'm a monster."
A little dark? Perhaps. Next songfic will be a direct sequel to this one. Stay tuned.
