Cammie POV
'This is a horrible plan' Bex groaned looking at her black and white waitress outfit in the mirror. 'I swear to Buddah and beyond, if any guy tries to touch me, I'll-'
'Snap their neck. We know' Macey, Liz and I said in unison. Bex folded her arms and huffed.
'It's no fair when you all gang up on me'
'Think of this as sweet revenge for me having to deal with that drunk' I smirked at her. Bex rolled her eyes.
'Fine. But just for the record, I don't like this plan'
'Have some faith, Bex' I said whilst Macey finished off my makeup.
'Shhh' Macey hissed 'I'm trying to do your lipstick...Okay. Finished' Macey spun me around to look at the mirror. My makeup was soft and subtle with a hint of elegance. My hair was styled in loose flowy curls that fell perfectly down my back. I was wearing a halter neck midnight blue evening dress with a slit up my left thigh.
There was a knock at the door.
'Come on Ladies, we need to go' Grant barked. All of us rolled our eyes. I headed towards the door but Bex grabbed my arm.
'Cam…' Bex looked back at Macey & Liz, their expressions all the same.
'What is it?'
'Can we trust them?' She asked. I paused for a moment, listening to my gut.
'Yes' That seemed to be a good enough answer for all of them as I could see their shoulders visibly relax.
'Ladies' Grant didn't knock this time, just burst in 'We need to move. Now'
'Yes sir' Bex gave him a mock salute, rolled her eyes and strolled past him, pushing his shoulder in the process. Grant looked shocked but intrigued by Bex's attitude.
We followed them out of the room. Zach was leaning against the wall, his ankles crossed over. He was wearing a black suit, a white shirt tucked in and a tie hanging loosely around his neck. He smirked when he looked at me.
'What?' I asked. He shrugged
'You don't look hideous'
'Ditto'
Zach chuckled and stood up properly, offering me his arm.
'Shall we?'
…
The Henley was full of many exhibits at this time, too many some would say. Then again, they had a reputation to rebuild. I moved across the room, sipping my flute of champagne admiring the art.
'This was the room that the paintings were taken from, correct?' Zach's voice was cool and low as he came up next to me.
'Yes' I scanned the room. Less than a year ago, this room was a crime scene that the entire world had eyes on.
'How did they do it?'
I looked up at Zach, his brows knitted tightly together. I chuckled. Zach looked back at me.
'What?' He asked
'Nothing' I waved it away, taking another sip of my drink. Zach took the drink from my hand and placed it on a passing waiters tray
'Hey!' I exclaimed. Zach didn't give me a response, he just grabbed my hand, pulling me into one of the other rooms where the small string band played and several people were dancing.
Zach pulled me close, still holding one of my hands whilst his other was placed lightly on my side.
'Care to explain?' I asked. He shrugged, shooting me his signature smirk.
'Don't want you to be too tipsy' He twirled me 'Plus, this is my favourite song'
Despite myself I chuckled at his poor joke and continued to sway with him.
'Summer or Winter?' He asked.
'I'm not playing this game, Zach' I sighed. He narrowed his eyes at me.
'Why not? The guys will let us know when our targets enter the building. Until then, why not get to know each other better?'
I rolled my eyes. 'Summer' I caved.
'Batman or Superman?'
'Depends' I said.
'Oh?' Zach raised an eyebrow 'Do tell'
'Bale's Batman and Cavill's Superman are superior. Don't even try to change my mind' Zach laughed
'Fair play. Now, quick fire. I say a word and you say the first thing that comes to mind' He looked down at me, grinning like the devil.
'Champagne'
'Robbed' I quipped
'Spy'
'Occupation'
'Apple'
'Orange'
'Rooftop'
'Escape'
'Mission'
'Target'
'Blackthorne'
'Family'
'Me'
'Pretentious' I smiled. Zach narrowed his eyes slightly
'Home'
'Somewhere'
'Running'
'Alive'
'Nick'
'Friend'
'Gun'
'Trigger'
'Training'
'G-' I stepped away from Zach. He remained where he was, eyes focused on me, challenging me.
.
Zach POV
'What's wrong Cam?' I asked, teasing. 'Who trained you?' Cam shook her head.
'Well played' She muttered
'Target heading towards the south west staircase' Bex hummed in my ear. Casually, I swept my eyes across the room to see Amelia's doing exactly what Bex had just told me. I looked at my watch. Almost time.
'We have eye-ball' I replied. I held out my arm for Cammie to take. She stared at me for a moment as if she was debating whether to snap my arm off or to take my hand. Thankfully she chose the latter.
We followed Amelia up the stairs after holding back for a few seconds. She made her way through the various other exhibits. There weren't that many people up here, the majority of the guests were downstairs.
'Agent Townsend's here' Bex hummed
'Good. Stay in position. Grant?' I said
'Already on it' He replied. Tonight was going smooth.
Cam and I went further along the hallway up until we got to an out of bounds sign and rope. I held the rope up for Cam.
'Me lady' I bowed. Cam rolled her eyes but ducked swiftly under the ropes. We moved further into the museum, there were less lights here, a common tactic to deter the public from even attempting to keep going, but not us. The music from the string band was extremely faint at this point.
'The Monet's should be just ahead' Jonas informed me.
'Wait' Cammie grabbed my arm, stopping me.
'What?'
'Do you hear that?' Cammie moved towards the speakers that were transmitting the bands music softly.
'We don't have time for this' I hissed. Cammie closed her eyes, listening to the music carefully, her face tightening as if trying to solve an impossible puzzle.
'Cammie…' I said softly, touching her arm lightly. Cam's eyes shot open.
'Sorry. I thought I recognised it' Her breathing was laboured as if she'd run for miles and not just standing still. I was about to ask about the music when there was the sound of approaching footsteps.
Shit.
I looked around but there was nowhere for us to hide. The footsteps were getting extremely close.
'Zach…' Cammie looked at me, knowing we were stuck.
'Shit' I cursed in Farsi
I grabbed Cammie and pushed her against the wall softly. One of my hands was planted on the wall next to her, the other was on her hip.
Cam looked up at me in confusion, her big eyes glistening in the limited light, her hands in my chest.
The footsteps got louder. Whoever it was would be here any second. I cursed in Farsi once again before lowering my head to Cammie's, capturing her lips in a kiss.
The kiss was intoxicating for me straight away. My grip on her hip tightened.
At first Cammie pushed against me but after a moment, she began to kiss me back, her fingers curling around my jacket, pulling me closer.
We were interrupted by a cough. Which always seems to happen. We pulled away straight away.
'This part of the museum is out of bounds' The guy declared, his British accent cool and calm.
'I'm sorry, we're just-'
'Agent Townsend' Cammie interrupted me. The guy raised his eyebrows, looking over Cammie in a way that made me want to punch him.
'Miss Morgan' He said 'You have been very hard to find'
.
Cammie POV
'This part of the museum is out of bounds' The figure announced to Zach whilst I recovered from what just happened. Zach kissed me. Clearly it was for cover but...there was something there. I shook my head and focused back on the figure.
'I'm sorry, we're just-'
'Agent Townsend' I interrupted, taking a step forward. He narrowed his eyes, looking me over, assessing me. It has been a long time since we last saw each other.
'Miss Morgan' He said calmly 'You have been very hard to find'
'You've been looking for me?' I raised an eyebrow
'Indeed we have' I spun around to see Amelia strolling towards me. She had a sad smile on her face. 'I must say, you definitely live up to your reputation'
'What do you know about my family's disappearance?' I asked, cutting straight to the point. Amelia's expression didn't waver.
'Perhaps we should take this elsewhere' Townsend suggested
'Why were you two meeting?' I wanted answers and I sure as hell were going to get them at some point.
'Not here, Miss Morgan' Townsend held my gaze, there was something in the look he gave me that sent me back to 10 years ago.
'It happened so quickly. I was scared. He wasn't...normal'
'There's a good reason for that' the man said without a hint of emotion.
'Am I a bad person?' I asked. The man looked at me, his expression softened at my demeanor. He crouched down on his haunches.
'Miss Morgan, there are some very bad people in this world who do very bad things. You are not one of them. Trust me'
'I trust you' I stepped towards Townsend 'So you need to tell me the truth'
...
The car, like many times before, was silent. Amelia, Townsend and I were in one car whilst the others, much to Zach's disliking, took the other car back to the hotel.
'It's good to see you Cameron' Amelia broke the silence. 'I just wish it was under different circumstances'
'Me too' I said.
'Your friend? Who is he?'
'Zachary Goode. Blackthorne'
Both Amelia and Edward looked at me.
'Cameron…' Amelia warned
'Surprise' I muttered
A minute later, I felt the car veer and slow and, all around us, the world got dark.
A moment later, the tunnel lights flickered, and we were lost in total darkness as the driver yanked the wheel. Tyres screeched. I grabbed onto the seat, suddenly, the wall in front of us parted and the car was swallowed up whole.
I spun in my seat, and through the car's dusty rear windows I saw the hidden door close behind us.
'Welcome to Baring Cross Station'
…
Townsend and Amelia led me down several corridors, past agents in business suits whilst I was dressed in a ballgown.
We kept going past the interrogation rooms, down several flights of stairs until we got to a section of this vast building where there was nobody.
'Where are we?' I asked
'In a restricted area but not a secure one so I suggest you keep quiet Miss Morgan' Townsend said over his shoulder. Townsend headed towards the door at the end of the corridor, he scanned his finger, did a retinal scan, and did a breath test. Amelia did the same and only after both of them did it, did the door open.
Townsend had his door on the handle and hesitated.
'Prepare yourself' He looked at me. I furrowed my brows trying to understand the conflicted look in his eyes.
I felt my breath hitch in my throat.
Townsend opened the door slowly, revealing a white sterile room. There was a faint beating from a machine. A life support machine.
I stepped into the room, feeling tears prick my eyes as I looked at the person on the bed.
'Abby?'
