Prompt: Since the Dragon Sleep Coma, and Hiccup's lack of waking, though the humans are relieved, Toothless begins to think Hiccup will sleep forever.
Song: I Will Not Say Goodbye by Danny Gokey
I Will Not Say Goodbye:
After Hiccup had returned from her healing hibernation, or dragon sleep coma, as some called it, she should have woken up. But she didn't, and that worried Toothless. What if her body couldn't fix whatever was wrong? What if her head was just far too injured? What if she was dying? What if―
Toothless couldn't stand the what ifs any longer, but they wouldn't leave his mind. Many dragons thought she was good as dead, giving their condolences the few times he ever went outside. The humans kept up hope she'd wake up.
Toothless laid on the ground of the human alpha's cave, his tail curled around himself, just waiting. (Start Song) Why did the world insist he lose everyone he loved? Why was it the moment he thought he found his new family, a new sister, she was being stripped away from him?
"Sometimes the road just ends…" Toothless cooed to the open air. The cave was quiet with Hiccup's father out. Hiccup just laid there as silent as ever, breathing deeply in and out, her heart still beating. Everyone was worried about him, human and dragon alike. He barely went outside, barely ate, barely drank; they feared he'd let himself die beside Hiccup. If this pain got any worse, maybe he would.
But, he was supposed to be stronger than that. "…I'm supposed to find a way to carry on!" And yet, he couldn't. He didn't want to feel better. He didn't want to not remember. Hiccup was the first being who brought laughter and care back into his life since his family died. He just couldn't let her go. Not her too."…I will laugh, I will cry, raise my chin to the sky, but I will not say goodbye!" he declared, and he knew it to be true.
He moved towards the bed, looking down at his found sister. Dragons always told him time would heal, but that didn't change the hurt he still felt. He knew this pain before; he felt it a long time ago. The world didn't care. It just kept moving, the sun rising and setting each and every day, and there he would lay, waiting for the pain to end, mind and body fading as time went by, hating the dragon who took his family, hoping they were happy with the stars. But if he could keep on holding on now, in this moment with Hiccup, maybe then that pain and hate wouldn't come again. Maybe then he could keep his heart "…from knowing that your gone!"
"I don't want…" He couldn't do it again. Not again, not again! He wasn't even thinking about if he would ever be able to fly or not. He knew the humans would figure something out for him. But would he ever be able to fly without Hiccup? Without her there, flying with him on a level no one could ever think possible? No. No, he couldn't. He just couldn't. "…I will laugh, I will cry, raise my chin to the sky, but I will not say…!"
Even if their time was short, the memories were still there. He could see them all, and he knew they'd never fade. He wouldn't let them. Looking down at Hiccup's sleeping face, he made his last declaration for the night, ones he'd promise to keep. "I will curse, I will pray, I'll relive every day, I will shoulder the blame, I will shout out your name…!" There were so many promises he wanted to keep for her, but even if he failed on every other one, one would always stay true."…will not say, Goodbye!"
She only kept sleeping, dead to the world, and dead to Toothless' despair. She was dying, and he knew it; it was only a matter of time. But even so, he could never say goodbye. Not this time. He laid back on the ground, curled beside the bed, just waiting for when their life faded away.
