Ed Sheeran quite recently put out a new song called Welcome to the World about his daughter, and when I heard it, I immediately became inspired to do this lullaby-like song-fic.
Also, I'm thinking of going back and redoing the first chapter, Listen, so look out for that. May be the next song-fic I post, might not, who knows.
Setting/Prompt: The night after Hiccup's official announcement/introduction to the tribe, after 2 months fearing she wouldn't make it, it's official. Hiccup is there to stay, the heir to Berk, and Valka still can't believe it.
Song: Welcome to the World by Ed Sheeran
Welcome to the World:
Sitting by the fire, Valka rocked with Hiccup, the baby tenderly tucked within her arms. She had finally gotten her to fall asleep. The little one had been crying before, a mixture of a human baby and a dragon hatchling. It was the most incredible thing to Valka's eyes. A dragon and a human, combined to one being. Who could have ever thought? As she continued to rock, she looked down to her sleeping baby, there in her arms, peaceful. Her heart skipped a beat.
"Welcome to the world", she sang quietly. "I heard your heartbeat, and lost every word." Valka knew raising and hiding a half dragon daughter wouldn't be easy. There would be challenges along the way, things they may never have expected, but she knew they could do it. "This is gonna hurt…" she knew, but Hiccup was hers, and she was beautiful. Her beautiful little girl who would change their life for the better, and change Berk along the way. "…I'll be right here."
She shifted her arms a little, like everything around her, repositioned. "…ooh, and I don't want to miss a thing." Their life was different now; it would never be the same. "...and this love won't ever go away."
Standing, Valka headed to their bedroom.
"Welcome to the world…" She stepped to the crib, so small, just like her little Hiccup. People would tease her for it, yes, but it didn't matter. "…words are only words, just like I love you…" She placed her inside. "…a new beginning, bright and unreserved…" Their daughter would bring peace and understanding between their worlds, Valka was sure, even if Stoick thought peace differently. "And I know…"
Valka sat, one hand to the crib. From here on out, things would be different; it was only a matter of when. "…and I don't want to miss a thing." She'd no longer be alone in her beliefs on dragons, as she would teach Hiccup everything she knew, and make sure all of her was loved, dragon parts and all. "…and this love won't ever go away."
Tenderly, with one gentle hand, Valka tucked her hatchling in, then took a small toy from the table nearby, unfinished. It was a Deadly Nadder, just for her little dragon. She wished she knew what the Night Fury looked like so she could make it instead, but she didn't, so a Deadly Nadder would have to do. It was almost done; all it needed was two little eyes.
"Ooh, I know that everything's changing…" she took two buttons. "…and I don't want to miss a thing", she began to sew them on. It took only a minute, but when finished, it was laid inside the crib, simply waiting to be found.
