Cammie POV

A few hours passed, Bex and I were locked away in one of the interrogation rooms down on one of the secret sublevels.

We had Gillian's journals, so precious that we had to wear gloves to read them.

I slammed a book shut and groaned.

'For a woman who founded one of the most secret spy training facilities ever to exist, Gillian sure wrote everything down'

'Tell me about it. There's so much about how she was never taken seriously because she was a female and it just makes my blood boil!'

'Agreed' I turn to pick up another book, a navy one with gold edging.

There was a page that was dogeared. I opened that page.

22nd January 1901

We found them. After many years of countless searching, I believe that I have finally found their base in Pennsylvania. High up in the mountains passed the rushing water where not even the sun dares to touch.

I will gather some of the girls and organise a carriage to take us partway. It will take at least a day's journey to get there.

I received a telegraph this morning from one of my girls based in Boston, there are talks of an impending rally in which many notable dignitaries will attend including one of Cavan's minions-

The rest of the page was torn off. I turned to the next page but it was blank. So were several others. The next journal entry wasn't until a week later which was only a few sentences;

29th January 1901

It has taken me a while to come to terms with the events of this past week. Although we found the Circle's lair, we lost some brave girls in the process. We were not prepared for what they had in store. They knew we were coming so I fear we have a traitor among us.

I do not know what the future holds and I fear that it will now be changed exponentially. The kingdoms will crumble and the walls falling down.

'It all falls down' I muttered.

'Did you say something?' Bex asked. I shut the book quickly, blocking out memories from before.

'Pennsylvania. Gillian wrote in her diary that she found their base in Pennsylvania but they didn't succeed'

'Do you think there's something else left there?'

'It's a start. Maybe if we retrace Gillain's steps, we might find out exactly who we need to find'

'What do we say to the others?'

I paused. 'We tell them what they need to know'

'So...nothing?'

'They will know what they need to know' I reiterated.

'How about you ask Abby? She might know something'

'I don't want to worry her. If I start asking questions, I know she'll try to stop me'

'Then do what you do best and ask on the sly. The more information we can get the better'

Bex looks around at the pile of books in front of us. Her brows narrowed in thought.

'What are you thinking?' I asked. Bex looked up at me.

'Gillian wrote everything down'

'Yeah…'

'They're kind of like mission reports, right?'

'And your point is...?'

'Maybe she hid clues in there. Something that only makes sense when a certain person reads them'

'Coded' I said 'Like my Dad's journal…' I looked down at the books before me; mission reports.

'Exactly! And we know that the best person to read these is Liz'

'But you heard what Buckingham said, we're the only two that can examine them'

'Precisely' Bex said with a wicked smile on her face 'We are examining them in person, she said nothing about Liz examining a photograph' She waved her phone in the air. The penny dropped.

'You've been taking photos!' I hissed 'Buckingham is going to kill us!'

'She won't know. Liz will read them and then erase the photos. It's the perfect plan'

'Except Liz will become the most targetted person on the planet for knowing all of Gillian's secrets!'

'No one will know. It's just you and me. Come on Cam, you're just annoyed that you didn't think of it first'

I rolled my eyes and paused weighing up our options in a mental pro's and con's list.

'Fine' I sighed slumping back into the chair, rubbing my head. 'Do you get the feeling that we're missing something big and it's right in our faces'

'I know, but hopefully, these will be the key'

'I hope so because if not, I don't know what else to do'

Zach POV

Cammie and Bex entered the dining hall looking like they had the weight of the world on their shoulders.

News travelled fast around the school, the girls knowing that someone bad had come to town and Cammie had saved the day. As Bex and Cam made their way through the hall, they were greeted by stares and whispers.

Cammie seemed unfazed, she lined up to grab her food, stopped to talk to Amirah on the way before coming to our table.

'Are you okay?' Macey asked as soon as they sat down.

'I'm fine' Cammie gave a weak smile 'Just tired, that's all'

'I don't blame you, it must have been a shock' Liz chimed in 'We finished with the autopsy and concluded-'

'Liz. Not at the table' Bex snapped.

'Are you sure you're okay?' I leant forward to ask Cammie, she glanced in my direction and nodded.

'Yeah I'm good' She flashed me a small smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.

'Did you see the knife?' Macey asked

'What knife?' Grant asked.

'I found a knife in the woods, Professor Buckingham made me show it to Professor Smith immediately. I swear I have never seen the colour drain from anyone's face that fast. What was the big deal with it?'

All eyes turned to Cammie and Bex. Cam's shoulders tensed up. She picked at her food.

'It was one of the tools used to torture me' She said calmly.

Silence descended over the table.

'Was that guy I shot one of the people who tortured you?' I found myself asking.

Cammie's mouth was in a thin line. Her eyes, big and vulnerable. She rose from the table.

'We leave in the morning' She muttered before turning away from the table, speeding towards the door.

Cammie POV

Abby's heart rate was steady as she slept. The beeps filled the silent room.

'I hear you're leaving' I look up to see Townsend standing in the doorway with a briefcase by his side.

'Looks like I'm not the only one' I retorted. Townsend nodded.

'I'll be back. There are a few things in London that I need to sort out first.' He sat next to me on one of the vacant beds. 'How are you?'

'I'm fine. She's safe which is the main thing'

'Cameron…' He looked at me carefully.

'What do you know about them? The Circle?' I asked. Townsend sighed.

'A great deal less than Professor Smith and Solomon'

'Joe knows about them?' This was a surprise. Townsend looked at me carefully.

'He went undercover for a while. Top secret mission'

'Do you think he's mixed up with them again?' I asked

'It's a possibility I hadn't considered before. That's why I'm heading back to London, I'll debrief Amelia, see if she can help and then I'll chase up some leads'

Townsend turned back to look at Abby.

'I'd hoped she'd be awake so I could say goodbye' He said

'I'm glad she's not' I admitted 'It makes it a little easier for me' I gestured to the note I had left on her bedside.

'Ah, I see' Townsend rose to his feet 'In that case, I'm glad that I saw you before you left so I can give you this'

He presented me with the knife. I stared at it as if it was a viper. Waiting to attack.

'Edward…'

'Take it, Miss Morgan. The blade is only as dangerous as the hands it is in, and to me, yours is the safest'

I took a deep breath and took the knife, holding it between my fingers. A phantom pain shot through my abdomen but I ignored it.

'I will see you soon, Cameron' He took one last look at Abby before heading to the exit

'Townsend' I said as a thought hit me 'Professor Smith said that me being alive doesn't happen when dealing with the Circle...Do you think my family…'

'Miss Morgan-'

'-Don't lie to me. Please'

Townsend's mouth formed a thin line, his eyes softened.

'I don't know. But the longer they're missing, the worse it looks'

His words washed over me. I nodded slowly, understanding what he meant.

'Take care of yourself, Cameron'

'You too'

And with that, he left. I closed my eyes and tried to steady my breathing.

Once my heart rate returned to normal, I opened my eyes. Abby was still fast asleep.

'I'm sorry, Abby' I gave a little kiss on her forehead before leaving the room.

I made my way to the elevator and as the doors opened, I was pulled inside and pinned to the wall.

'We need to talk'
