When Squall was six, he was losing his first tooth. He thought it was cool at first that he could wiggle his tooth, but as soon as it started to come too loose he worried.
"Daaaaaad!" he cried loudly.
A moment later his dad stumbled into the room, nearly tripping through the doorway. "Squall! What is it?! What's wrong!?"
"My tooth…" Squall said carefully, not wanting to disturb the tooth more than he already had.
Laguna sighed with relief as he came a little closer. "Is that all, kiddo? Hey, it's nothing to be scared of. It's not going to hurt."
"But it's going to fall out!"
Laguna knelled down next to Squall and placed a hand on his head. "But that's what baby teeth do. They fall out and then the big boy teeth can grow in. You're a big boy, right?"
Squall nodded. "Uh-huh! I'm a very big boy!"
"So let's see that tooth and if it's ready to come out. Can you let me look?"
Squall opened his mouth and gently pushed on the tooth with his finger, it was wiggling much more loose than before and he could barely even feel it. With another push it nearly fell forward out of his mouth.
He froze up, but then he felt his dad's hand on his face. Carefully Laguna reached his hand forward and lightly pulled on the tooth. There was no pain at all as Laguna pulled his hand back to show the tiny little tooth in his hand.
"Now see? Was that so hard?"
Squall shook his head. "That was really easy! And now I can put it under my pillow! Sis says that aTooth Fairy will come and give me a gift if I do!"
Laguna chuckled as he stood back up. "That's right. A pretty little Tooth Fairy will come and visit, but only to good boys and girls who are fast asleep. You can't stay up and try to see her."
"Why?"
"Cause."
"But whyyyyyy,"
Laguna licked his lips, trying to figure out what to say. "Cause… uh… the Tooth Fairies are very shy. They don't like to be seen by people or they will fly away scared. So we need to sleep so we won't scare them."
Squall tilted his head, taking in all the information. A moment later he smiled and nodded. "Okay! That makes sense!"
"Good. So let's put your little tooth in a bag and tonight we can put it under your pillow. Okay?"
"Okay!" Squall agreed.
Laguna ruffled Squall's hair with his free hand as they exited the room. "And you were still very brave."
"I was the bravest wasn't I?"
"You sure were, kiddo. And now you can tell Ellone all about it when she's back."
Squall jumped up and down as he tailed after his father. "Yeah I'll do that! I'll tell her everything and ask her what she did when she lost her first tooth."
Laguna grinned. "Sounds like a plan."
