Edward pulls into Wellsworth with the local passenger service. "Good afternoon BoCo. How are you doing?" he asks the Class 28 seeming cheerful while releasing a big cloud of steam. "I am good, thank you." the green diesel answers him while backing up to a goods train. He looks at the old blue engine for a couple of seconds before he speaks again. "What's the matter, old friend?" he asks concerned. Edwards smiles wavers, before turning into a frown as he sighs. "It's the 200 year anniversary of four of my siblings today. I haven't seen them since 1919 and I really miss them." BoCo smiles reassuringly. "I understand." "Edward." The stationmaster walks up to the steam engine. "Can I help you sir?" "Yes, the Fat Controller wants you to take a small goods train to Vicarstown after you finish this run." Edward raises an eyebrow. "Why me? Wouldn't James be the more logical engine for that job?" The man shrugs. "He asked specifically for you." Charlie Sand pats the side of his engines cab. "Don't worry, sir Topham knows what he's doing." Edward opens his mouth but is interrupted by the guards whistle. Edward blows his whistle and departs. "See you later BoCo."
Sir Richard Topham Hatt gets off of the express at Vicarstown. He walks over to the other side of the platform and sits down on a bench. A couple of minutes later a whistle is heard and a purple Furness K2 with golden lines and a golden smokebox pulls into the station. "Good morning sir." she greets the controller. Richard stands up and walks towards her, smiling. "Good morning Edith, how are you today?" The girl smiles at him. "I am doing relatively good. I am a little sad about the fact that I haven't seen my siblings for over a century and it is their 200th anniversary." Rosie stops besides her. "I know how you feel. I haven't seen my siblings in years either." The red tank engine moves steams towards the yard to resume her work and Edwards whistle is heard. "Hello sis." the old engine says while coming to a standstill beside his sister. "Good morning sir." Richard smiles at the old blue engine. "Good morning Edward." "Sir, if I may ask, why are we here?" The controller pats his splasher. "You will see soon. We just have to wait for Thomas and Lady-" He is interrupted by a bell as a LNER class J70 with blue sideplates and cowcatchers steams into the station. Both Edward and Edith gasp. "Griswal!?" The tram engine smiles at them. "Hello you two, it is nice to see you again." While the two old K2's look dumbstruck at the tram a well-dressed man with blonde hair and brown eyes steps out of his cab and walks over to Richard. "You must be sir Richard Topham Hatt. I am Sander Hodgson, controller of the Obbeeys Railway." Richard shakes his hand. "It is a honour to meet you sir." Sander waves his hand. "Please, just call me Sander, everybody does." PEEP PEEP. Thomas and Lady stop behind Edward, who's trains already has been taken away by Rosie. "Good morning sir." the two tank engines greet their controller. "I see you two didn't have any trouble with your train. I wanted the four of you here because we are going to the Obbeeys Railway." Edward snaps out of his state of shock. "Why are we going there, if I may ask?" Sander chuckles. "Three years ago, four engines returned to the railway in serious need of repairs. Today is the day that they'll return to service." His smile widens as he sees realisation dawn on the faces of the tender engines. "Yes." he says. "The Magical Quadruplets are back." Edith takes a shuddering breath and then she blows her whistle as long and loud as she can, while bursting into tears. Edward whispers calming words to his sister while Lady puts her confusion into words. "What are you talking about? The Magical Quadruplets? Are they magicians or something like that?" Thomas chuckles, to the surprise of the purple tank engine. "I am not surprised you don't get what we are talking about. The Magical Quadruplets are four magical engines like you, possibly even stronger. They are Furness K2, that is why Edward and Edith are so emotional. They haven't seen them since 1919." Lady chuckles. "Nice joke Thomas." Said tank engine just rolls his eyes. "Let me get turned around, after that we can go." Griswal says.
The five engines enter Barrows yard. "Why are we here?" Lady asks confused. "Just trust us dear." Edith says cheerful. They turn onto a siding and Griswal, who is in the lead, speeds up. The moment his buffers touch the buffers on the end of the siding, he disappears in a white flash. Lady's eyes widen in surprise. Edward and Edith follow the tram and Thomas softly nudges the buffers of the purple tank engine from behind her. "You don't have to worry Lady. It isn't dangerous." Burnett Stone pats the outside of her cab. "It will be alright, my Lady." he whispers at her. Lady sighs. "Alright then." She slowly moves towards the buffers.
Leoni Stocker, a 30 year old woman from German origin and the director of the Aaronsey Research Facility is inspecting an old siding near the facility Libby had informed her about the previous day. She steps over bushes and branches that cover the overgrown tracks. She walks towards an old shed. "Vell vell vell, vhat do ve have here?"
Rafe shunts the last truck into the siding. "Finally done." he sighs relieved. "You've been quite busy the for the past couple of days, haven't you?" Darel, the red 2-8-0 + 0-8-2 garratt mentions from the station platform. "I have. I needed to so I can attend to the ceremony." the red LB&SCR E2 answers. "They mean a lot to you, don't they?" Rafe chuckles as he stops besides the bigger engine. "They do. Their lessons have made me into the engine I am today." On the platform the guard blows his whistle and waves the green flag. "See you later Rafe." "Later." Rafe reverses back into the yard to get one special piece of rolling stock while the red garratt steams out of the station with his passenger service.
Lady blinks a couple of times before she looks around. She has been transported to a siding inside a relatively big yard. To her right she can see seven large shunting sidings and behind those are four sidings for loading and unloading goods. To her left are a turntable and several sidings. In front of her is a big station. "Rafe! How are you?" Edward is standing beside a red E2 like Thomas. He has grey stripes and on his tanks the word Obbeeys and his name are written in gold. "Hello Edward, Edith. Are you two exited?" "Of course we are! We will see them again after so long! Did they change much?" Rafe chuckles. "Norm is friendlier, but they have stayed the same for the most part. I am impressed Rick managed to stay the same, especially after what he's been through." "What do you mean?" Thomas stops behind Lady and looks confused at him. "It is not my place to say, but he has suffered a lot." Sander clears his throat. "Didn't you need to fetch someone, Rafe?" "Right, I will see you guys soon." He puffs backwards, heading back into the yard. 'Let's go to the works."
"Please follow me, they have been expecting you two." Fiona, the works diesel moves towards a hidden part of the massive works located at Bea. Hanne and Nore can't help but stare at her. Fiona doesn't look like your everyday diesel, faceless or non-faceless. She is a purple BR class 28 with a cream coloured roof, the word Obbeeys and her name written on her sides in gold. But that isn't the thing that they look at. A large, bronze coloured hydraulic claw is resting on top of her roof. It makes her look quite intimidating, but her soft green eyes reveal her true personality. "You two are the first to see them since last December, besides myself and the workmen of course. They wanted to keep their new shapes a secret until their finished." Hanne briefly touches the scar on her blind left eye. "Does he have any scars? We were never able to clean his face good enough to see if he had any wounds, especially his buried right side." "See for yourself." Fiona says as she holds a curtain open with her claw. The twins gasp at the sight of the four engines restored. Rick smiles sweetly at them. Seven light grey dots randomly mark his forehead and another light grey line marks his right cheek. "Hello Hanne, Nore, it is wonderful to see you two again." Melody, Norm and Romy smile at the two as well. "We have finished our training. I hope you are ready for us as your crew." Nore says to Rick, smirking. His smile only grows at that. "You know, the two of you might just end up being the 'ones'." Hanne and Nore frown, confused. "What do you mean?" Nore asks. The quadruplets look at each other. "I think Romy should explain since she discovered it." Norm suggests. Romy smiles at him, her dark green eyes twinkle in the light of the lamps. "We magical engines can form some kind of magical bond with people who are destined to be part of our crew. We can only form such a bond once in our lifetime per crewmember by our knowledge. Once this bond is formed, the person in question will stop aging at their physical prime. They will only start aging again when the engine they are bonded with dies, or so we suspect." They are silent for a moment, before Nore speaks again, clearly moved. "And you think we are the people you can form such bond with us." she asks with a slight shuddering in her voice. "Yes, I do think so. I feel connected with you two, even more than I did with Bella." That turns out to be too much for the two girls. Hanne and Nore burst out into tears. "Y-you don't k-know h-how much that m-means to us!" Hanne sobs uncontrollably. "Grandma and grandpa p-passed away a couple w-weeks ago. You g-guys a-are the o-only family we h-have left." Nore cries while holding her twin in a tight embrace. Rick gently releases a cloud of steam around the crying girls as if embracing them. "Just know I will always be there for you two. I owe you my life and I care greatly about you two. I'll be your boiler to dry on."
Lady looks around the yard of Bea Works filled with amazement. She can see so many old engines around her, one engine catching her attention, a red 4-8-4 cab forward . She stares at him while some workmen guide her to her place. Edward and Edith stop beside a black Furness K2 with F&R on his tender in red and red lines and red wheels. "Who is he?" she asks out loud. "That is Stijn, he is the fire and rescue engine." an unfamiliar female voice says to her left. Lady looks over and jumps forward from shock, throwing Burnett out of her cab.
"Are you alright? That was a nasty fall." Angel looks worried at the man. "Yeah, I am fine, thank you." "Burnett! Are you alright!?" the purple asks worried. The man chuckles. "Yes." Angel smiles at the man and his engine. "My name is Angel, and this is my driver Anon Fletcher. Who are you?" The purple engine just stares at her. "Those two are Lady the magical engine and her driver Burnett Stone." Thomas stops on the tracks to the left of the black tank engine. "Hello Thomas, how have you been?" "I have been quite well. I've got my own branch line." Angel's eyes widen. "Really!? Congrats!" Lady has finally found her voice back. "A-are you my sister?" she asks shakily. Angel smiles. "I guess so." Burnett leans out of Lady's cab. "What class is that cab-forward over there?" he asks. Anon looks in the direction he is pointing. "Who, Andy? He is an Obbeeysian cab-forward. He is the only one of his kind." Burnett nods. "We have two of that sort of engines on Sodor as well. They are the only 4-10-0 + 0-10-4's in the world. They are very nice." "Who are?" Rafe stops next to Thomas. "Two engine working on Sodor with us."
Hanne and Nore look amazed in the mirror. Both girls are wearing the same green uniform. They have a green cap with the emblem of the Obbeeys Railway on it in gold. They have long jackets that reach until their knees and are kept together by a belt at their hips. Under the green jacket is a red lumberjack T-shirt. They also have dark green shorts, stocking that reaches above their knees and long, brown boots. Both of them have a golden necklace and brown gloves for protection. They have their long black hair in a braid and have red lipstick. "Is this really the right uniform?" Hanne asks, a tat worried. "It is dear. It really is your uniform, assuming you two are Hanne and Nore." The twins turn towards the door of the changing room. Two young woman smile at them, both wearing similar uniforms. One of them has blonde hair and the other is a ginger. The blondies uniform is blue where the twins uniform is green and the gingers uniform is silver in those places. "I am Harper Jones and this is my colleague Eleanor Page. I'm Romy's driver and Eleanor is Norms firewoman." the blondie says. "It is nice to meet you, I am Hanne and this is my twin Nore." The twins shake the hands of the two girls. "Do the boys have uniforms that look like ours?" Nore asks curious. "Yes, they have. Only we have these uniforms though. Crew of the Magical Quadruplets, that is." Eleanor says. "The others have more standard uniforms, although they also have the colours of their engines." The door opens again and a man with brown hair, a moustache and grey eyes peeks his head into the room. "Ah, good, you four are ready, I see. Mister Sander is waiting for us." Harper straightens her cab and nods. "Thank you Lee. We will be there in a second.'
Sander Hodgson climbs onto a temporary stage next to the main entrance into the main works building. He takes the microphone out of its stand and clears his throat. Everyone falls silent. "Ladies, gentleman and engines, we are here today due to two things. First is the fact that today, October the sixth 2020, marks the 200th anniversary of the Magical Quadruplets. The Magical Quadruplets, for anyone that doesn't know who they are, they are four magical steam engines. They have formed the basis of this railway. The second reason we are here today also involves the Magical Quadruplets. After they have been stuck on an abandoned branch line for 87 years they finally found their way home three years ago. After throughout rebuilds, they are finally ready to return to service." Whistles rip through the air and people applaud loudly. After a couple of seconds Sander motions with his hands stop the noise. "But before we reveal the restored engines, I would like to thank the people who made this possible. Please give a warm welcome to the workmen and the engines of Bea Works." Everyone cheers while a big group of men and woman in overalls climb onto the stage and a green Austerity 0-6-0 saddle tank named Miles and Fiona roll out of the building. Four woman and four men wearing more or less the same uniform but in different colours climb on the stage, one of them holding a cardboard box. Lee takes the microphone. "We want to thank the Works and the workmen for restoring our beloved engines. As a show of gratitude we want to give you all something." He opens the box and reveals a ton of medals inside it. Under loud applause the medals are handed to the workmen. After the medals are handed out Harper takes the microphone. "There are two more people we want to thank. Hanne and Nore Hill" The twins look surprised at her before they step forward to stand beside her. "Hanne and Nore, today is your first day as the driver and firewoman of Rick. Thanks to your efforts and dedication we have our beloved engines back. Hanne, for you we have this." Harper puts her hand in a pocket and pulls out a golden pocket watch. Hanne accepts the valuable gift with tears in her eyes. "Nore, your gift is something special. This whistle makes a sound that only your engine, in this case Rick, can hear." Harper says while showing her a small golden whistle on a golden necklace. "Try it out." Nore looks a few seconds at the whistle before softly blowing it. A couple of seconds of silence follow, before a loud, low and ominous whistle rips through the air.
Ruby, the green West Country pacific races through the station of Sloat with her special load. "Oh, I hope zhat ve are on time." Leoni Stocker mutters to herself inside of the express engines cab.
Sander takes the microphone back from Harper. "Great job." he whispers. "And now the moment we've all been waiting for has finally arrived. We are going to reveal the engines now." He nods towards Alan Dixon and Eleanor Page, Norms driver and firewoman, and they walk into the massive building behind them. "First is the oldest off the four. He is silver, the fastest of the four and he is proud of it. Even though he can be boastful, he has a kind heart and is friendly to most people he meets. Everybody, please give a warm welcome to Norm!"
Norm exits the building in a big cloud of steam. His silver paint and black stripes shine in the sun. His smokebox, windshields and dome are painted bronze and he has a copper cap on his chimney. He has two tenders. On the first tender the number 18200601 is painted in big golden numbers. On the second tender the crest of the Obbeeys Railway is painted. His name is written on a nameplate in golden letters on the sides of his cab. There is a strict vibe in his green eyes.
"Welcome back Norm." Sander smiles at the engine. "Thank you. It is good to be back." Sander continues speaking. "From the oldest to the second youngest. She is sweet, helpful and cheerful. An expert on the subject of branch lines. Her yellow paintwork is quite rare under steam engines, but it suits her nonetheless. She does every job asked of her with great professionalism. Everybody, please give a warm welcome to Melody!"
Melody exits the building and rings her new bell. Her yellow paint with red stripes shines in the sun alongside the silver paint on her smokebox and funnel. Her cab is made of polished wood and she has red cowcatchers and she has a copper cab on her chimney. Her face is filled with freckles and her shining pink eyes give her a young appearance. The number 18200603 is painted on her tender in big golden numbers and her name is written in golden letters on a nameplate on the sides of her wooden cab. Lee Gray and Emrick Stevenson lean out of her cab with huge grins on their faces.
"It is good to be back home again. I've missed this place." she says, smiling at Sander. "It is good to have you back. Why the cowcatchers though?" Melody chuckles, a sound like crystal. "Sir, wait with questioning our modifications until you've seen Romy and Rick. My cowcatchers are nothing compared to them." Sander raises an eyebrow, while seeing Harpers blonde hair disappear into the works from the corner of his eyes. "Really, you've got me curious then. Next is the youngest of the four. Her knowledge of track maintenance is unmatched. She is a fierce woman who loves her job and crew. Everywhere she goes, the tracks improve. Everybody, please give a warm welcome to Romy!"
Romy exits the works in a huge cloud of steam. Her dark blue paint with golden stripes and three golden domes and the copper cab on her chimney shine in the autumn sun. She has smaller domes in front of and behind her normal dome. Her tender isn't like anything they have ever seen. It stands on two bogies and on top of the tender a crane is located. Just like her twins she has her name on the side of her cab in golden letters on a nameplate and the number 18200604 in golden numbers on her tender.
Sander looks dumbfounded at the blue tender engine. Harper and her fireman Maurice Page gently pat the side of Romy's cab. She chuckles. "Hello Sander. It is nice to be back." Romy says with a twinkling in her green eyes. "It is good to have you." Sander recovers from his shock. The twinkling disappears out of her eyes as she turns serious. "Before Rick is revealed, we would want to say something.' Sander nods. Norm clears his throat and starts of. "Over the years people have discussed the fact that Rick is the leader of our little group, despite me being the older sibling. They found it quite strange. In the past, it fuelled my ego and I became a bit of a prat. Don't get me wrong, I have always accepted Rick as our leader. He is amazing. He is wise, strong, has a heart of gold and he is very smart. He always puts in his best effort, and that is remarkable." At this point Melody takes over from Norm. "Rick has always been a cheerful engine, he still is, even after what he has been through. He has gotten stuck on the branch line alone, and a bomb has fallen on his boiler in 1943, completely destroying his boiler and knocking him on his side. He has stayed strong for 74 years. He is the strongest engine we know, and he deserves to be our leader." Romy inches forward. "We don't want anyone to criticize him, ever. He is our brother and he has been through too much already." At this point, all three the engines are in tears.
Edward and Edith look shocked at their siblings. "W-what!?" Edith finally manages to force out through the tears. Edward envelops her in a cloud of steam, having tears roll over his cheeks as well.
Sander clears his throat to get the attention, while whipping some tears from his face as well. "There is only one engine left. He is the strongest of the four, mentally, physically and magically. He loves to take goods trains and to shunt. A yard where he has been will be organised in a very efficient way. His paintwork looks great on him, despite being quite common around the world. He has a big heart and is called the leader of the Magical Quadruplets. For a reason. Please give a warm welcome to Rick!"
Nore gently pats the side of Rick's cab. "It is your time to shine, dear friend. Let's show them what you're made of!"
Rick exits the works in a huge cloud of steam. His dark green paint, lighter than that of Emily, with red and white stripes shine in the sun. On his footplate, on both sides of his boiler, a brown hydraulic arm with a four fingered claw on the end is mounted, its turning point next to his smokebox, facing backwards. A Westinghouse pump is located on the left side of his smokebox, and he has a small dome with a safety valve on top of it between his chimney and his regular dome, both golden. He has a copper cap on said chimney. All his wheels are drivers. His pilot wheels are like those on Lady and the drivers on his tender are like smaller versions of Thomas'. His hydraulic arm is supported by something that looks like a piece of the roof of a diesel, painted red like the sides of his footplate. His cab windows have yellow lines like Edward. Like his brother and sisters, his name is written down in golden letters on a nameplate on the sides of his cab and his number, 18200602, is painted in big golden numbers on his tender. There are seven scars from bullets on his forehead and another marks half of his right cheek. Steam escapes from his chimney and his pistons as Rick stops next to his siblings.
Angel feels her boiler pressure rise while she looks at Rick. Her cheeks turn red and her mechanical heart beats like crazy. "He is so handsome." she whispers to herself.
Suddenly, a high pitched whistle rips through the air and Ruby steams into the yard, pulling something red. Leoni jumps out of her cab and runs to Sander. "What is wrong Leoni?" he asks worried. "I ave found somezhing near ze Research Facility!" she exclaims. Ruby has been uncoupled from her load and departs to go back to her jobs. Everybody gasps. Ruby's load appears to be a red Furness K2. Her dome is painted gold, like her rods. Her wheels are blue, and she has blue lining with white outlines. She has the name 'Lizzie' on the sides of her cab in golden letters on a nameplate. What is most surprising thing though, is that she has the same wheel configuration as Rick. She has her eyes closed and seems to be fast asleep.
Rick can't take his eyes of the red engine in front of them. Deep inside of his firebox he can feel something pull at him. He can clearly feel the magic surrounding her. "Why do you seem so familiar?" Suddenly he realises what it is. The girl looks like him. Her face looks an awful lot like his, their drivers match and their magic is almost identical to his. He slowly moves towards the engine, who is on the same tracks as him. "What are you doing?" Nore asks from his cab, sounding a bit nervous. Rick doesn't respond. He softly presses his buffers into Lizzie's and his vision turns black.
Rick wakes up to the feeling of cold water splashing on his face. He blinks a couple of times before fixing his gaze on Hanne and Nore, who are standing in front of him. They sigh in relief and Nore puts a bucket down. "You had us worried there." Hanne says, her voice a slightly higher pitch then normal. "I am fine." the engine reassures her. He looks at the red engine I front of him with a gentle smile. After a couple of seconds she opens her green eyes, locks them into his and smiles. "Father." she whispers. "Lizzie." Rick whispers back, feeling an immersive fondness for her. "What!?" Nore asks in a hushed voice. "You heard right. She is my daughter.' Rick explains while smiling. "How does that even work!?" Hanne exclaims confused. Rick and Lizzie look at each other before smiling and turning their gaze back to Hanne. 'Magic." they say in unison. Sander walks over to them. "Are you okay now?" he asks, concern showing on his face. "Yes sir. I am fine now. This is my daughter, Lizzie.' Sander raises an eyebrow but stays silent. "Let's get you turned around." Rick says to Lizzie. Hanne climbs back into his cab while Nore couple the two engines. After she has climbed back into his cab, Rick starts to pull Lizzie into the works.
After Rick has shunted Lizzie onto the track beside him, Sander grabs everyone's attention again. "There appears to be another magical engine. This is Lizzie, and apparently she is the daughter of Rick. And for the people wondering how that works: magic." He is silent for a moment before continuing. "Because of the fact that Rick has suffered so much, we have a present for him." He nods to Rafe and said engine starts puffing forward. Rick looks curious at Sander a little bit surprise present on his face. "Because you like pulling freight so much, we figured out that you might want to have your own personal brake van. And since you and Lynn get along so well, she will be your brake van from this day onwards." Rafe uncouples from the brake van and steams away to get back to his spot. 'Hello Rick." the green GWR 16-ton brake van greets him, a tat nervous. Rick smiles at her. "Hello Lynn, how are you?" She sighs in relief. "I'm good, thank you." A young woman with dark orange hair and green eyes wearing the same uniform as Hanne and Nore jumps out of the brake van. "Hello Rick, I look forward to work with you." she says cheerfully. "I look forward to it as well Alyssa." Sander clears his throat. "With this I conclude this ceremony. Good day everyone."
