The Arlesdale Railway has had quite an eventful season! First Rex has an accident with some coaches, then a new engine from Scotland named Bridget arrives, and then one of the railway's workers goes mad. I mustn't say more though, or I'll spoil the stories.

Based on the scripts, we know that Patch and Lily eventually fall in love, get married and have kids. There is speculation that the family heading down the hill in the final scene is Patch and Lily's family. And Lily told the story of Magic Railroad to their children. This naturally begs the question: How did they get there? What follows is my attempt to tell that story.

After Emily got him out of the snow for a second time, Thomas is feeling upset and embarrassed about the number of times he got himself into trouble through avoiding wearing his snowplough, and promptly starts to beat himself up about it. Emily, not wanting him to feel that way, decides to cheer him up with a pep talk and more than a little bit of love.

A series of thefts across Sodor leads The Fat Controller and the engines on a great mystery.

Sir Handel is cross about having to take some equipment for the Tidmouth Gymkhana, and in his frustration he goes to the harbour instead to take some plant pots. Molly comes along to take the equipment to the gymkhana, and Sir Handel's mistake leads to confusion for both the Gymkhana and a flower show on the Mainland, but Molly's ingenuity is able to save the day.

Another snowfall means that the engines have to wear their snowploughs and clear the lines, but Gordon is concerned about Rebecca's brakes, which have been known to be problematic ever since Rebecca arrived on Sodor. Rebecca takes as much as she can, but when clearing the tracks up Gordon's Hill, her brakes fail completely, causing her to become a runaway, with Gordon on the chase.

Thomas becomes smug and overconfident after his driver jokingly tells him that he could manage without him. He sets out to prove to his friends that he can move by himself, and he succeeds, but not in the way he expected to.

When Thomas returns to a particularly familiar place from his past, he finds himself in the company of a certain streamlined steamer where he would be able to love genuinely for real this time.

Edward tells Thomas and Gordon a story from his life before he came to Sodor, and his two friends are surprised to learn about how different he was in the past from the wise and kind engine he is today.
