"Talk" - Talk
'Though' - Though
As they entered the airlock and the decontamination process started Korel looked back at the other three individuals. "Ok, quick recap so that none of you forget, we are going to meet the counselors. It's mainly just talks since I told them that there was only one member of the new species. Six, do you remember what I told you about them?" he scratched the back of his head with a shy smile "Yeah, them, sure…the counselors, T'asair, Turiamus and Sala" that got a snicker of the other two but not from Korel who merely sighed "No, you didn't pay attention did you…no matter, the asari, turian and salarian counselors are Valos T'doran, Opilus Galnis and Baenort Hasso respectively, try and remember this time". A green light illuminated the room indicating that the decontamination process was over and they were clear to proceed. Six placed his helmet back 'Just to be sure I don't get shot in the head again' he reasoned.
"Be respectful and follow my lead, the Citadel may not look, but it's as dangerous as anywhere else" Korel said taking the lead. As the doors opened and light flooded in as Six lifted his hand to shield his eye. He could compare it to the first time he walked outside Doc. Michel house, a blinding light for a couple seconds followed by a breathtaking sight. However, this time instead of seeing a barren wasteland and a small village he saw the wonder of engineering that was the Citadel, with its arms reaching far and wide. "That is crazy. How does stuff up there not fall?" he asked pointing to the Citadel arm that was directly above him "By the will of the gods" Jini said in a mocking tone moving her fingers in a wavy motion "Har har, but really how?" he persisted looking at her "Artificial gravity, it was what was keeping us on our feet in the ship, if you want to know the technicals details…well it's going to take a while" Jini explained, stopping herself from rumbling in the subject "But I can teach you about it if you stay with us" she offered with a smile "I would like that" he responded with his own smile.
"Alright, everyone in" Korel said, gesturing to the elevator. After everyone entered the elevators started going up "So… are we going up or down?" Six asked "Up, is indicated by the arrow over there" Atticus pointed at said arrow "Well, but what is the correct orientation of the Citadel? Because if it is spinning, the up-side and down-side change. So…" he was cut by Atticus "Nope, not going there" he said crossing his arms "You're no fun" Six said leaning on the wall. "Are the elevators universally slow?" Six asked, getting a series of complaints that can be resumed to 'They just are and I want to punch who was behind this decision'.
"Quick question, where are we?" Six asked after the long elevator ride as he looked at the lake, grass, trees and overhead bridges "We are currently in the presidium, here is where most of the government offices for every known species are located, alongside their embassies. That tower in the distance is the Citadel Tower, where we will be meeting the council" Atticus explained. Six smirked and spoke to Korel "So, I'm going to get an embassy and office?" she merely scoffed "Let's not get ahead of ourselves, besides are you ready to face the paperwork?" Six face dropped as he shivered "Point taken".
"I'm surprised there isn't a crowd of journalists and all that, so far things have been quiet" Six questioned out loud "Indeed. I thought the discovery of a new sentient species would get more attention" Jini agreed. "That is the Citadel for you, most people only look out for themselves" Atticus said with clear disdain "Speaking from experience it seems" Six added waiting to see the reason as to why the turian didn't like the citadel "Was part of a security party for a turian ambassador once, Spirits, worst job ever. He walked over anyone he thought wasn't going to help him, that made him many enemies".
Their talks were interrupted by a commotion "Hear me! Hear me! My flock! The end times will come, not with a bang, but with a sigh. Those who dip their extremities in the well of sin and vice must repent with a pilgrimage! Let not fleshly friendships and base urges compel us to sin and neglect. The Word makes its demands, and it demands obedience!" as a batarian was standing in a box in the middle of the road "Well, slavers and mad cultists, aren't they a fun bunch?" Six said sarcastically "Whatever this is we need to keep going, it wouldn't be a good first impression to be late" Korel said, eyeing suspiciously the batarian. They weaved through the crowd as the mad prophet continued his ravings about 'The end of all things for those that were not of the flock'.
As Six was passing the crowd he suddenly felt someone grab his shoulder. It was the crazy batarian. Now up close Six could see more detailed his face he appeared to have metal implants in the top of his head, his skin seemed drie as if the batarian had been standing under the sun for days, his robes were not well kept having wear and tear on them and the thing he found the most unnerving were the batarians eyes, he had seen junkies with less of glass eye look than this batarian "You… something is wrong with you… you're not in the grand plan…" before Six could resort to his favorite answer to crazy cultist 'a fist to the face' he was separated by Korel "That's enough, everyone disperse, moving on!" she shouted as the crow followed the asari orders "As for you" she turned to the batarian "Under Citadel law, you're under arrest for disturbance of peace" not giving a chance to the batarian speak again he was frozen in place with stacis.
It didn't take long for a couple of C-sec officers to show up and take the mad batarian into custody. "Now that that's taken care of we should continue" Korel gestured to them. "Hold up, how come you have the authority to arrest people? You're some kind of space cop?" Six asked walking next to Korel, she merely chuckled at him "Not exactly a space cop and that is all I'll say, a girl has to keep her mysteries after all" she gave a smirk to him letting him fall back alongside Jini and Atticus.
The rest of the walk to the Citadel Tower was uneventful with only a few people figuring it out that a new alien was walking among them. "*whisel* That's one big tower, they sure need to be the center of attention don't they?" Six said looking up "Somehow I think that the tower is still too small for their egos" Atticus said chuckling to himself "You have no Idea" Korel added dryly as she opened the tower doors "Oh come on! Another slow elevator!?" an exasperated wastelander groaned.
"If I become the embassador of humanity I will vote for making those torture devices faster" the courier said giving a dejected look at the elevator they just exit "Please, don't start to sound like a politician while under my lead" Korel pleaded "I'm sure he will get a lot of votes", "And if he does that to the rest of the galaxy than we can name him counselor" Jini and Atticus added respectvely much to Korel dismay "Don't incentivise him!" she looked at Six who she was sure was smirking at the ideia "Counselor Six, have a nice ring to it, don't you think Korel?" her response was only to let a groan out.
They soon entered a spacious chamber which was full of trees and beautiful fountains with sets of stairs in the anterooms leading up to the Council's audience chamber and beneath it there is a garden protected by glass. Currently the counselors were busy with what Six could only presume was the batarian ambassador "No, ambassador, our decision is final. The Hegemony will not be allowed to expand towards the Exodus cluster. If there is nothing else to discuss, I believe we have more important matters at hand" the asari councilor stated, gesturing to Korel and her group. "No, councilor" he said through gritted teeth and giving a slight bow.
"SPECTER Korel T'Loak approach" the asari councilor Valos T'doran ordered, causing the politics and high society that was there to start whispering to one another. Korel approached giving a bow alongside all others with the exception of one courier. Six for his part removed his helmet, holding it underneath his arm and gave a two finger salute "Howdy, Valos" giving his best smile "And howdy to you two as well" he said giving a nod to the other two. The murmur from the spectators ceased, allowing a deafening silence to take hold. "Tough crowd" Six mutters to himself, the counselors for their part remained neutral. Six could tell that they were analyzing him up and down, the asari had a hidden displeasure look on her eyes 'Snob, great just like the White glove society', the turian had a approving look 'Guess, showing up in armor and not being to much for ceremonies goes along with the turian military mindset' and the salarian was difficult to read 'Uhm, from what Korel told me about salarians they are super genius, she must be adopting a wait and see stance'.
"Excuse my peers' reaction, we did not expect such a… unique introduction, but nevertheless I welcome you mister…" she waited for the wastelander response "Courier Six" that caused the asari councilor to do a double take "I'm sorry, but I believe my translator might have not caught it, did you say your name is Courier Six?" for his party Six only raised a brow "Yep, that's the name. Your translator didn't glitch" that caused the salarian to ask "Do your people's names change based on the current profession they are upholding and why are you the Sixth one?". Six looked at the counselors 'Do they really think that?' he held back the urge to laugh "No, we have our own names, I'm … I'm just a special case and hell if I know what happened to the other five couriers, probably gambeling in Vegas" he gave them a smile please with himself because of his puns and how far they went over the head of the counselors.
"Very well, as is customary for new species we would like to known a bit more about your species, as a form of formal introduction, normally a codex with your people information is enough but as we have been informed you are a unique case" Six caught the slip in the asari request 'So, Korel sent a report on me, as I suspected… They are fishing for info' he let out a confident smile 'Well, two can play this game… if I manage to do it with Korel, with them it shouldn't be too different, after all I always work best when the odds are against me'. "As you wish. I'll skip to the important bits otherwise we would be here for a long time, so the most important event that happened in my people's recent history was…".
After the long tale of Earth history, or as much as Six would tell or rember that is, the asari councilor spoke "That was an interesting if not a sad story. I'm truly sorry for what happened to your people. I'm sure that my colleagues also feel that way" she said, gesturing to the other two. "Do you know where your homeworld is located? We might be able to provide aid" she offered "Also, It would be beneficial to all the other races under the council to learn more about the effects of radiation and how a species that isn't like the Krogan managed to survive" Baenort added. Six gauged their reactions to the story he told them, Valos and Baenort had paid attention while Opilus was clearly bored after he determined that humanity wasn't a threat, as for their offer Six just bursted out laughing "Sorry…It's just…. I really have no fucking ideia were Earth is on your maps".
"I see, that is unfortunate. However I must ask you then as a token of possible future mutual cooperation between our species if you wish to be the first human ambassador in the Citadel" Valos offered. To their suprise Six just shrugged "Sure, why not. However I have one condition, I'm not one to stay in one place, so I suggest going with… what did you guys call her Ghost? Whatever… going with Korel instead of staying here on the Citadel, what do you guys say, sounds fair?". If looks could kill, Six would be a dead man for suggesting that as Korel gunned him with her eyes.
"We will need to discuss this in private, if you excuse us." Valos said, moving to a private back chamber. "Why did you offer him to be an ambassador?" Opilus asked in a angry hushed tone "Calm yourself, it's merely a gesture, the report Korel sent and the information he gave us tell us that his species can only live for about a century, he won't be able to do anything worth while" Valos explained herself and turned to Baenort "What is your take on him and have the scanner returned anything?" Baenort closed her omni-tool "Problematic he is smart, saw that we were trying to get more information from him, he never mentioned anything about his world tech always being generic about it, as for the scanners he has several body modifications and some of his tech is so odd that our scanners can't make sense of it".
"What about Korel's report, she mentioned seeing some kind of laser based weapon during the meld" Opilus questioned "Korel also mentioned that she couldn't pry the information from him, she assume he either has an incredible mental fortitude or the damage he sustained in his brain worked as a mental barrier, either way it is problematic" Valos said. "I believe letting SPECTER Korel watch him will be our best option, he appears to be comfortable with her, he is more likely to let it slip while in her company" Baenort offered "Very well, all in cordance then?" Valos asked and they all agreed. The councilors returned and Valos did the honors "We talked and came to an agreement, we accept your condition ambassador Six". Korel clearly wasn't pleased with the decision.
"Well, guess I'm your superior now" Six said with a grin to Korel "As if, you do realize the title is merely a formality, right? And even if it wasn't I'm a SPECTER, so I'm above the red tape" he shrugged "Figures, but now comes the important bit. I need an upgrade and I mean gear, mine is banged up, weapons would be so bad too" he said making a list in his pipboy "You do know you don't have any money, right? That means that before you go anywhere you need a bank account, you also need to buy an omni-tool for yourself, the one you are wearing is borrowed" Atticus pointed out. "Urgh, fine. Where can I see if they would value my money?" they would all give curious glances towards the exasperated reaction the wastelander would give to their answer "Citadel bank".
"So…any of these have any worth?" Six gestured to the pile of bottle caps placed in front of the bank clerk "Uhm… are these your world currency?" the salarian clerk asked, totally confused as to why would a species decide to use bottle caps as their currency "Yes, that is the main one, we still have others but for these how much?" The courier was getting annoyed. He hated banks because they would always take their sweet time to get things done, that and the one time he was conned, was enough to make the man hate places like that. "Best I can give you is 10 credits… they don't have any value besides their material" the clerk gave a apologetic smile "*sigh* what about these?" Six said, placing some of the NCR and Legion currency 'Please be enough, I have more in the pipboy, but I doubt they have dematerializer tech here and that would raise too many flags' the clerk opened his omni-tool and scanned the currency. After a few seconds he tossed aside the NCR currency and grouped the Legions "These are worth something… here you have.. 250 credits" Six looked at the money 'Oh yeah! New keeping that Legion stuff would pay off one day and I'm looking at a one to five conversion' he smiled "Nice, how much did you say an omni-tool was?" he looked at Jini "A good one will cost you about…3125 credits or 625 of your currency".
Six excused himself asking where the bathroom was. After that he came back with 1000 of the currency needed 'Don't ask, you don't want to know how many pockets I had to go through' was all he said. "Ok, I doubt I will be able to buy any armor or weapons with only 1875 credits" Six said, finishing adjusting the omni-tool on his right arm "Not likely, especially since it's going to be custom made armor, but you can probably cut costs by just updating your current armor, a basic shield generator alone can cost 1800 credits but you would be running blind with no visor to indicate how your shields are doing" Atticus said, scanning the courier "As for making your armor space worthy and able to communicate with your omni-tool, that would probably cost something along the lines of 7500 credits or more" he added and closed his omni-tool. Six sighed "No rest for the wicked… So Korel, you guys got bounty hunters here?".
"No, I'm not going to let you go bounty hunting around the galaxy, and why is that the first thing that comes to your mind?" Korel crossed her arms looking at Six "One of the things I used to do back home, along with doing a lot of other random things. But come on! How am I supposed to make money?" Korel smirked, "Ever thought of applying for a job? You used to be a courier didn't you?" Six let out a groan "Do I look like someone that would like a desk job or anything that involved routine for that matter? I would go mad in a matter of days!" Korel shrugged "Better get used to it then, because I'm taking you back to the colony, less trouble this way".
"What for?!" the wastelander wasn't liking this one bit, he wasn't going to let one pushy alien get in the way of his space exploration. "That's for pulling that stunt with the council, what made you think that I would like you tagging along? I decide who goes in my crew" Korel said in a tone that left no room to discusion "Now let's get your ass on the ship, we have two trips to do and I have council matters to attend later" that picked the interest of Jini "Two?" Korel nodded "Yes, Tibelius has sent me a message, he finished his business in Rannoch, so that means that you are going home Zorah" the quarian lowered her head a little. "Fine! Then save you one trip, I'll go with Jini to Rannoch, either way I get off your back" Six approached Jini. Korel narrowed her eyes "As you wish".
The walk back to the ship was silent with the relationship between Korel and Six having become cold. They entered the ship with everyone going to their respective posts aside from Six who ended up in the armory. "What bit her?" he asked Atticus "As far as I know, nothing, weird question" the turian responded, while starting to disassemble a weapon "It's a metaphor, it means what made her so mad?". Atticus without looking at Six answers "That's easy, you pulled a fast one on her, she is a SPECTER they are not used to be ordered around minus the council of course, so she returned the favor" the courier crossed his arms "Must be fun working with her" he mused sarcastically "It's not easy, but it has benefits", he raised a brow "Such as?" Atticus chuckled "No red tape to get equipment for example. Speaking of which" he reaches below the table and hands Six a pistol "Lost cargo, as far as I know" he gave him a smirk "One true wingman" Six responded with a smirk of his own "Any way, hide this well and if you excuse me I need to do some calibrations in a few of the weapons".
"Receiving a call from the council Korel" Jurhik informed. "Patch them through, briefing room" Korel ordered, soon the holographic images of the counselors appeared "SPECTER Korel, we wonder if you received your mission" Valos asked "I did, but honestly, this is STG work, I've elected to pursue the previous mission on the disappearances and the Shadow broker" that clearly displeased them "We understand, however we believe…" Korel cut them "I'm not going to babysit a new alien nor take him on a classified mission. Not only that but I see the disappearances of many high level individuals as a bigger priority than seeing if one new alien is happy". The asari councilor started to speak but was cut off by Korel saying "Jurhik, lose this channel" she received the response by the communication being cutted.
Six was about to descend to engineering in order to see and talk to Jini, but as luck would have it, as he opened the elevator doors said quarian exited "Hey Jini, just the one I wanted to see. How are you doing? You looked a bit down when Korel told you that you would be returning home" Six gave her a sympathetic smile "I'm fine, just a bit sad that my time in a working ship is soon to be over and then it's back to the drydock. Thanks for asking, but what about you?" she asked, giving her own smile "Well, guess I will see what Rannoch has to offer, that and I remember you saying that if I tagged along you would teach me about artificial gravity" that made her chuckle "You really took that to heart didn't you? Sure, whenever we both have free time I could teach you".
They spent the rest of the journey talking about Rannoch, more specifically the city of Rayya, Jini's home town. Their talks were interrupted by Jurhik announcing "We arrived in Rannoch, good luck you two". Korel was at the exit waiting for the engineer and the courier to arrive, seeing them coming she stopped leaning in the wall, she looked with a smile at Jini "Here we are, it was a pleasure Zorah, you were an excellent engineer" the smile vanished as she looked at Six "Can't say the same about you, but I had worst" that caused the courier to scoff "Yeah, the mirror I imagine" Korel frowned at his joke "Go, get out before I bioticly shove you out" his response was to give a mock two finger salute and walk down to the airlock.
"You two really don't like one another do you" Jini stated as they looked back at the Thessia's Edge taking off, that caused Six to chuckle "Not really, is more like trying to push two magnets of the same polarity together, we push each other back" he looked back at the dock "So, this is where you work?" he asked, pointing at it. "Yep, looking for work? Thought you said you would go crazy if you applied to a normal job" she said, letting a giggle out. "That is my secret, I'm already a little crazy" he gave her a smile.
"But really, do you have the skills to work here? I can't teach you everything, not because I don't want to, but because it's going to take a while" she asked worried about her friend "Well, if I'm being honest Jini, I didn't tell everything that I knew to the council. First off I known engineering, second..." he pulled out his nuclear core from his power armor "...Miniature nuclear reactor, does fucking wonders" the quarian eyes almost pop out of her head in awe "Ancestors how?! It shouldn't be possible" Six smirked "Well did you guys try to use nuclear power to power a ship?" Jini stopped to think "Not really, we didn't try to develop nuclear tech further after we found element zero… this… this could change everything! Why haven't you told the council?" she asked while scanning the device "Simple, when I saw that the council's primary source of fuel for their ships and hell, their entire infrastructure if the Citadel is anything to go buy revolves around only one resource. I knew I had to hide my cards well or else they would force it out of me, by any means. That and well, I like to think that I have a healthy dosage of paranoia".
Jini started to realize what he was implying "Keelah, you can destabilize the entire economic system" Six grinned "Yep! And that is just one of my aces" the quarian stared at him "More?! What, like you can turn invisible or something?" his only response was to widen his grin "Who are you?" she asked perplexed "I'm the fucking mailman! Now Jini what do you say, do you want to keep repairing ships in a drydock, work on someone else's ship or build and work on your own ship?" he said, extending his hand. Jini hesitated for a second before accepting "How are we going to get a ship, to start with?" he chuckled "I will find a way, always do".
