Disclaimer: Sadly, I do not own King Arthur.
It had been a week since the loss of her unborn child. A week since she woke up in Lancelot's arms and a week since she started distancing herself from not only him but King Arthur and Queen Guinevere as well. She also hadn't been sleeping much, meaning not at all which is how she ended up at the crash site of her car. The night breeze cutting through her nightgown, spreading goosebumps along her skin and making her shiver. Weeds had begun to find their way out of the ground, wrapping themselves around the twisted metal, glass and plastic like an ocean folding a ship into it's dark icy depths.
Closing her eyes she could remember what had happened that night. She'd been sick for a while, a month of not getting any better and several concerned friends later she finally made it to a doctor. When they told her she was going to be a mom, nothing could have made her happier. She had taken her time getting home, it was almost 8pm when she finally pulled into the driveway, David's car already parked in front of the garage. But walking into that house and finding him.. finding them.. together. Suddenly the best day of her life turned into her worst. She ran from him, from the house and sped away. She didn't know where she was going only that she needed to get away and the more distance between them the better.
That's when she crashed her car, sobbing and trying to reach for her phone. The sounds of the crash filled her ears again, the movement of the car as it sailed through the air and came tumbling down to the Earth below. She gave a startled cry when a hand came down on her shoulder, spinning around she was surprised to find Lancelot looking worried. "My deepest apologies, I didn't mean to scare you, I've been calling your name..."
He pulled his cloak off and laid the heavy material around her shoulders, securing the clasp so that it wouldn't slide off. "You're cold, we should get you back inside."
Amelia shook her head, "I don't want to go inside."
"Please.." He went to place his hand on her shoulder again and she jerked away from him, "I'm fine!" She yelled, "I don't want to go inside so just leave me alone, Lancelot!" He frowned and she took a step back from him. More distance.
"Why are you behaving like this? We are friends, are we not?"
She hesitated. "No.. we are not."
"You're lying."
"Please just go away, Lancelot."
"No." He said, standing his ground and refusing to put any more distance between them. "Not until you come back inside. It's not safe out here and yet here you are and without someone to watch over you."
Amelia scoffed, "I can take care of myself."
"I've no doubt, that doesn't mean you should have to. Please, Amelia, come back inside." She looked up at him when he said her name. A moment passed and then another. She turned from him. The silence of the night stretched between them, the air if possible, became even more chilly. Like it could sense the tension, pain and anger between them.
"Amelia-"
"I found him with someone else. David. That's his name." Her words stopped him. "The day I found out I was pregnant, I went home to tell him and he wasn't alone. Someone else was in our bed with him and when I caught them.. I ran. It was stupid to get back in that car.. it's dangerous driving when emotional. That's when this happened-" She gestured to the twisted metal in front of them. "-And when I woke up here, I could honestly forget about it all. Even the baby. Does that make me a bad person?" She let out a shaky sigh, "He left me long before then and I pretended not to notice the distance between us until I found them together and I couldn't really pretend anymore and now.. now she's left me too." Her hand settled on her stomach as tears began rolling down her cheeks, she gasped when the back of his hand gently brushed the tears away. She found herself pressed into his chest, his heart beating steadily beneath her ear, it's rhythm calming her as they stood there in the dead of night.
After a few quiet moments Lancelot spoke softly, "I cannot pretend to know the pain you are going through right now, the loss of a child I fear is something you'll never forget. But one day, Amelia, you will be a wonderful mother. I know it." She lifted her head up and he swiped more tears away with his fingers. "I promise you it will happen." A subtle grin appeared on his face, "This man, David was it? He's a fool. A woman like you deserves to be worshiped like a Queen." He gently cupped her face in both his hands, using his thumbs to wipe away any remaining tears. "You're special, Amelia. And stubborn. Funny. And far more beautiful a woman than I have ever had the pleasure of coming across."
She blushed but scoffed, pushing against his chest to get some distance, surprising herself when he released her. "I bet you say that to all the maidens."
"Just the ones that wonder off in the dead of night to stare at an odd contraption of which they arrived in unexpectedly." He smiled, "Come, let's get you back inside. Can't have you catching your death out here." He held his hand out for her to take, entwining their fingers when she placed her hand in his.
They took their time walking back. Neither one noticing King Arthur watching them from his post.
