It didn't take long to get the hang of how the place was run. Breakfast at 9am, lunch at 2pm, dinner at 7pm and lights out by 9pm. No visitors after 5 and nobody gets in to see a patient without proper I.D. No exceptions.
The patients were how you'd imagine the elderly living in an assisted living home would be. Some were cranky, some docile and some just plain old. Her favorite patient was a spunky old gal named Maggie who liked to harp about her no good cheating scumbag of an ex husband.
Before long it had been an entire week of working at the retirement home and yet..
"My money is on Peggy." Marie said.
"Peggy? The head nurse? I thought you liked her?" Kaida asked, her nose buried in a book as usual.
"I do but come on! It's always the quiet ones that nobody ever suspects!"
"Marie.. we don't even know what it is we're dealing with so would you mind keeping your half-ass theories to yourself? You're driving me nuts."
Sighing dramatically Marie flopped back onto the bed. After a few minutes Kaida looked up from her book.
"Aren't you going to be late for work?"
"Son of a bitch!"
Marie's phone vibrated letting her know she had a new text message. She took a cautious look around before picking it up.
Use a mirror. ~ Kaida
"What the hell does that even mean?" She mumbled angrily under her breath, jumping when someone behind her cleared their throat.
"You know the rules, Marie. No cell phones during work hours. I won't tell you again." Peggy warned.
The lies came easy to the forefront of her mind. When you became a hunter, your lies could make or break your case. Your cover was everything.
"Oh, of course Peggy, I'm sorry. It's just my sister is pregnant, she's due any day now and I'm all she's got. She thought she was going
into labor but it was a false alarm. Turns out it was just some minor indigestion."
Peggy immediately softened, "Oh well, sweetie, why didn't you say so before? Just.. go outside the next time it's your sister and I'll cover for you."
Marie gave her a big smile, "Thanks Peggy, you're the best! I'm going to go and do my rounds but today lunch is on me so I'll meet you out front, okay? My treat!" She called back over her shoulder as she disappeared down the hall.
"What are you doing in here?"
Marie's head snapped up, she'd been in the back office files checking up on the recent deaths to see if anything had been 'swept under the rug'. One of the male nurses, Trevor, stood in the doorway. His arms were crossed, brow furrowed and glaring right at her. Trevor hadn't even made her radar, they met once and she hadn't seen him since.
"I was just-"
"Snooping."
"Looking for-"
"You were snooping." His features lost their harsh edges. "But.. if you agree to a date tonight I promise to let this slide."
"You actually expect me to go out with you in exchange for your silence?"
"I don't think you have a choice."
"Marie, have you lost your mind? You don't even know this guy. And what about Dean?"
"What about Dean, Kai? I'm not his damn girlfriend, we had sex. It was fun. End of story." She snapped, pulling on her boots.
Kaida scoffed, "Do you even hear yourself right now? You sound like a whore!"
Marie stopped pulling on her second boot at her sisters words and glared. "So.. that's what you think of me? That's great." She yanked on the boot and snatched up her purse when there was a knock on their hotel door room but before she could move Kaida grabbed her arm.
"Please, M. Don't do this. You know I didn't mean it.. just.. we're supposed to be working a case!" She pleaded.
"Screw the case. According to you I'm a whore, not a hunter. Finish it yourself." She ground out, yanking her arm free. She marched over to the door and threw it open. Trevor stood, hand raised to knock once more. She grabbed his hand out of the air and dragged him back towards the elevator.
"Marie! Please don't leave like this! Marie!" But it was too late, by the time Kaida made it to the elevators the doors had closed a second too late. However, there had been enough time to catch a glimpse of Trevor's reflection in the mirror opposite the elevators.
"Come on, I'll get you another drink."
The date was a complete disaster. The only thing good about it was that Trevor had caved and brought her to some local bar for the
strong yet cheap drinks. He came back handing her a glass with amber colored liquor in it. When his hand touched her shoulder and remained there
a little too long she began to feel uneasy. She knocked back her drink to see if it would help. It didn't.
"Let's dance.. come on."
"I don't-" They were in the middle of the floor before she could even think of a good argument. He spun her around, her back to his front.
His hands drifted down to her hips as they moved. More like he moved and she grew all the more uneasy. Shaky. Disoriented.
Suddenly he yanked her back, his grip tight as he leaned into her ear. "Dance. With. Me." He ground out.
With a burst of energy she raised her arm and thrust it back with all the force she had behind it, slamming her elbow into the side of his face. Panic set in as she shoved through the throng of bodies dancing and crowding the entire bar. She stumbled out into the alleyway, gasping for air and trying to gain some sense of stability. Everything was spinning now.
She heard the door slam open behind her and spun around to find Trevor glaring at her. His facial features were distorted with malice. "Why are you doing this? What are you? What the hell did you do to me?" She asked.
He laughed, "You're such a little spit-fire. I like that. And don't worry I just gave you a little.. dose. Something to make you taste all the more better."
"Taste?" Her voice hitched up in panic. "What do you mean taste?" She tried backing up when he made a move to step towards her but whatever he'd done to her made her unbalanced and she stumbled instead into a dumpster.
"Oh.. yeah." He raised his hand, wrist exposed and she watched as a spike slid out from beneath his skin.
"Oh my God, you're a Wraith. That's.." Her head gave another shift, he was going in and out of focus, it was getting worse. "..that's how you've been killing all of those innocent people. How could do that to them?"
He snorted, "You're joking, right? Their old! Their families dropped them off at a nursing home and never came back. They obviously don't care which leaves them for the ripe pickings sort-a-speak."
Marie lunged for him but he easily over powered her, back handing and knocking her to the ground. He pinned her down, one hand holding her hands above her head while the other moved in for the kill.
THWACK
He was knocked backwards with a swift kick to the face. "Get the hell off my sister!"
Trevor laughed as he got to his feet. "Oh, two for the price of one. I'm going to enjoy this." He said, wiping the blood away from his now broken nose.
Kaida went in for the first strike, silver knife in hand but he caught her wrist, twisted her arm and forced her to drop the knife. He knocked her backwards and picked up the knife for himself. "Did your research I see." He weighed the knife in his hands. "Very nice.." He commented as Kaida got back up. Marie was still struggling with reality on the ground but managed to pull herself to the side.
Trevor looked over at Marie with a grin before turning his attention back to Kaida. Without waiting a second longer he threw the knife straight at her, aiming for her head, unfortunately for him she plucked it from the air and sent it back his way sinking it right in the middle of his chest and through his heart.
With a sudden gasp of air and a look of disbelief Trevor dropped to the ground dead. "Well, that was anti-climatic." She mumbled to herself.
As soon as Trevor was gone whatever he'd done to Marie seemed to disappear in an instant, she stood, meeting Kaida who looked worried but unharmed.
"How did you even find me?"
"I put a tracker app on your phone."
"Thanks for that."
"Anytime. Come on, let's go home."
