"Shit it's cold" Kankuro breathed into his hands, as he watched the fog of breath pass between the cracks of his fingers.
"It is cold, maybe we'll get to see snow this year." Temari said in amazement as she witnessed all the red, orange and yellow trees that surrounded the gates of Konoha. She's only been to Konoha once this time of year, and it was 7 years ago. Since then she's been dreaming about autumn in Konoha.
"Umm, I don't know about that one Tem." Shikamaru appeared from behind them, trying to stay calm as he was overwhelmed with excitement from seeing his girlfriend.
"Why not? It seems cold enough." Temari turned to face him, as a huge smirk appeared on her face. She didn't care to hide how happy she was from Shikamaru and knew he was just excited as she was.
"It doesn't usually snow in October, and it's usually a little warmer. It's just really cold today."
"You said usually" Temari walked closer to her boyfriend, eventually her face was right in front of his. "That means it happened before." She smirked waiting for her boyfriend's reaction.
"It happened a few times, so I guess it's possible." Shikamaru nervously rubbed the back of his neck, not knowing what had him feeling this way. Maybe because Temari was here. It was definitely because Temari was here, he just wished that she would live here so she could witness Konoha year round.
"So it just might happen." Temari surprisingly kisses him on the lips, witnessing the blush that appeared bright red on his face.
"Sorry to interrupt your reunion, but I'm freezing-" They both turned to stare at Kankuro, as they kinda forgot that he was standing right there.
"You're a highly trained ninja that survived a war, a little cold won't hurt." Temari yelled, hating that he interrupted her and Shikamaru's interaction.
"That's true, but I'm not in a war now and there is warmth available." Kankuro argued back, wanting to get out of the cold.
"Kakashi is already aware that you guys arrived, and told me I have the rest of the night off. So I guess we can-" Shikamaru started walking waving for them to follow behind him. As he was about to explain their stay, Kankuro had interrupted him.
"So where are me and Tema staying at?" He asked, hoping that his sister wouldn't make him stay at an inn by himself.
"Well-" Temari began to answer "I'm staying at my home with my boyfriend but you-"
"Can stay in one of our guests rooms if you like" Shikamaru told him, hoping that was the answer that Kankuro wanted to hear.
"The inn is nice, but I'll accept your offer" Kankuro sounded nonchalant, but was actually thrilled to be staying with people that he considered to be his family.
Temari was just as happy too, and the smile on her face was present the entire walk home. And when she entered, that smile had disappeared.
Shikamaru had always been a neat person, but the state of the house made it seem as if no one had been here for days. Nothing was out of place, and with the amount of work that Shikamaru does there was bound to be at least a book that wasn't in its correct position.
'He must be in the office all the damn time' Temari thought to herself as Shikamaru had shown Kankuro the room he'd be staying in. When Shikamaru returned, he found Temari standing in the same exact spot.
"What's wrong now Tem?" He knew it came out a bit more annoyed than he tried, but it was the first time seeing his girlfriend in two months. And being met with her angry scowl is not something he wanted.
"When was the last time you actually slept here"
"When I emailed you the other day and forgot to message me back" Shikamaru tried to joke, making an effort to lighten the mood. But Temari could see right through Shikamaru's wit.
"Let me guess...Lord sixth had to force you to take a break didn't he. I bet you've been working months straight before that one little break. He probably told you to take an entire week off." Shikamaru didn't like how she got every detail right without him telling her a thing.
But just by looking at his eyes, Temari could tell how tired he was. And what she hated even more was how much he overworked himself. She knew he did this to distract his mind, she just wished he would tell her everything that's going on.
"Tem, I want to take a break. But with this damn train thing I have no choice but to work nonstop."
She could see some truth in what he was saying. And arguing was only taking time away from the sleep that he needed. So she knew it was best to drop the situation for now.
"If you say so Shika, we'll talk about this more later. But for right now I want you to get some rest. Can you please do that for me?" Temari hugged him around his waist, trying her best to comfort him.
"But Tem-"
"Please?" Temari knew that Shikamaru brought his work home if he was out the office early. But she was positive that he was ahead with everything.
"Fine" Shikamaru smirked, knowing that he better accept this sweet side of Temari before having to face the wrath cruelest kunoichi. "I'll go to bed, only if you join me"
"I'll be right up lazyass, let me just see how Kankuro's doing" Temari stood on her tippy toes, as she gave him a deep kiss, not wanting to separate from him. But she eventually let him go so that he could be well rested in the morning.
She heard Shikamaru walk up the stairs as she walked down the hallway to find her brother wrapped in a towel staring at himself in the mirror.
"Can you at least knock first?" Kankuro knew that she was coming, but a small knock rather than barging in his room would be nice.
"This is my house, so no" Temari chuckled as she watched her brother roll his eyes.
"Well can you at least get so that I can change?"
"I'll be out in a sec, I just wanted to see how you were settling in. I see you found the bathroom. It's nice to know that you can do something for yourself."
"Haha...I was going to ask you. But you and your boyfriend seemed like you was having an important conversation."
"It was nothing." Temari said nonchalantly as she sat on the bed.
"That kid seems like he does more work than Gaara, and he's not even a kage." Kankuro already knew what the conversation was about, he had overheard them talking. He could tell how tired Shikamaru was too and completely agreed with his sister.
"I think he has potential to be the hokage, but you know him. It's too much responsibility. And plus he's overworked with just being kakashi's assistant."
"Maybe we'll go out and get drinks, and get waisted."
"Absolutely not, you guys just got waisted at that party you threw for Choji."
"He didn't, he got into a fight. He needs some fun Tem. And if I go out with Kiba and Choji, then he'll automatically say yes."
"I guess you're right, but he needs fun not trouble. He's already been in enough of that." Temari told him as she accepted the fact that her brother was right.
"Trust me"
"I'll trust my boyfriend to be responsible" Temari started to head for the door. Giving one last glance that her brother was alright for the night. "Good night Kuro"
"Night Tema"
They smiled at each other one last time before Temari headed upstairs to her room. As she walked in, she found a Shikamaru in a deep sleep on their bed.
She walked over to him, placing a kiss on his forehead before heading to take a shower.
