Oh god! Oh god! Oh god!
Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!
These were the last thoughts of Jaune Arc and Ruby Rose respectively as both soared through the air with the latter trying to catch the former. The young girl mentally cursed the headmaster for causing her delay and her blonde friend for the stupid decision to enroll at a combat school without any experience. Jaune, if that fall doesn't kill you. I WILL.
The only thing the aura less could do was flail around while plummeting to his death. With every passing second, the closer the boy is to the ground. Attempting to close the distance between the two, the young huntress-in-training kept her form straight with her cloak wrapped around her body, allowing her to gain more speed almost like a bullet. She felt the wind fly past her face as she soared.
Although the ex-vigilante was close, she wouldn't be able to reach, or even catch, the boy. Ruby's desperation and fear grew as the boy was about to smack face-first into the ground, most likely breaking all his bones and killing him upon impact.
Miraculously, the Arc boy was saved by a familiar bronze javelin catching him and pinning him towards a nearby tree. From a distance, the owner of the spear could be heard. "I'm sorry!"
Relief washed over Ruby, seeing her first friend at Beacon being saved. He may have been an idiot for doing what he did without thinking of the consequences, but he was still her friend that needed help. Although, that doesn't mean he won't get an earful from her later, and boy does she have a lot to lecture him for. But she'll cross that bridge once she gets there.
Anyway, now it was time for her to look for her own partner. Pyrrha took Jaune, Oum only knows where Yang was, and right now she was running out of potential options. Time was now of the essence for her. With her own cloak, Ruby used it as a glider to not only slow her descent but also allow her to maneuver through the air.
The first thing she needed was a vantage point to scout out for any potential partners. Lucky for her, the emerald forest is a terrain filled with enough tall trees and cliffs to give her that advantage. With that, Ruby glided down to the closest tall tree and landed herself down onto one of its tall branches.
Now, how was she going to find herself a partner? As said by the headmaster and mistress, they were supposed to gain a partner through chance, which means they also have a way of tracking who the students would be paired up with. That gave the young girl thought.
There must be cameras around the forest to oversee our performance. They're grading how well each of us would work with our partners. But that can't be the only way he is watching us. Cameras would always have blind spots and there are so many he and the headmistress could watch, meaning he has another way of monitoring us.
Ruby glanced down to herself, thinking of ways they could be spying on them until an idea popped in her head. She quickly pulled out her scroll and began tapping away.
Scrolls have the function of monitoring our aura and health so that must be how he is able to easily monitor us. He's connected to all of our scrolls. However, what most don't know is that it's a two-way street, meaning while he can see everyone else, someone with the right tools can do this.
And within a couple of seconds, she now had full access to Ozpin's scroll tablet, giving her the location of all cameras and students nearby. If Bruce could see me now, he would kill me for getting the Remote Hacking Device on my phone. Ruby chuckled to herself at the thought before going over who was near her vicinity. As luck would have it, the closest student to her, with the exception of Jaune and Pyrrha, was none other than Weiss Schnee.
Joy filled the ex-vigilante at the prospect of being paired with her old friend. The heiress may have changed in personality, but she was still one of Ruby's closest friends before. She was not going to give up on her. And so, Ruby went off to the heiress' location.
Today, things weren't going so well for Weiss Schnee. While things started off great, like befriending Pyrrha Nikos and perfecting her own landing strategy, things have gone downhill from there.
First, she almost paired up with the weird blonde boy from earlier. The thought of her being on his team was already unpleasant, but being partners with him? That would be a nightmare for her. Fortunately for her, he was already paired up with someone else.
Unfortunately, that brings up the second bad thing that has happened to her today. Pyrrha Nikos, the one person Weiss had been aiming to be partnered with, was the other person that paired with the blonde. If she wasn't mad before, she was surely furious with life now. Now there was no way of making her perfect team.
And to add the cherry on top of her bad day, she was now surrounded by over a dozen beowolves. This wouldn't be a problem for her, as she could use this as a chance to impress anyone watching her, especially the headmaster and headmistress of the academy. She was already in her perfect stance, loaded Myrtenaster with a vial of flame dust, and was ready to attack. But what pissed her off most was that she hadn't even had the chance to attack. Because, out of nowhere, a couple of objects flew past her face and the beowolves behind her suddenly exploded.
She hadn't had time to think before the entire area around her was then covered in smoke. While Weiss was coughing and trying to smoke out of her face, something jumped down from the trees, pulled out what looked to be a spear, and began attacking the grimm around her. While the fog may have masked the figure, there was no mistaking that the movements were extremely familiar to the heiress, causing her eyes to widen in shock. No...it can't be…
A pit had sunk into Weiss's stomach as she slowly walked back. The bombs, the way the figure moved around, the flow of the cape. The heiress couldn't help but freeze and relive old memories from a few years ago. She wasn't sure how long time had passed until a voice broke the girl out of her trance.
"Sorry for randomly dropping in," A familiar voice said before facing the lone Schnee. "You looked like you needed some help."
The voice only strengthened the girl's assurance on the identity of the person. Weiss couldn't really believe it was…
As the smoke dissipated, it came as a surprise to Weiss to see not an old friend of hers, but none other than the smiling face of one Ruby Rose. The shock of the Heiress first turned into disappointment then into unbridled anger.
"You again?! Do you have any idea what you've done!?" Weiss yelled at the girl, causing the latter to shrink a bit at her tone. "I had everything under control until you popped up out of nowhere!"
"Look, I thought-"
"Well, you thought wrong! It's because of you that I could've started a forest fire!"
"But-"
"And now because of that, I-"
"Would you shut up for 5 seconds and let me explain!"
This got the White-themed girl quiet. Nobody in her life has ever yelled at her like that, with the exception of her own father. Not only that, while she had only recently met this girl the previous day, it was clear to Weiss that she was a very patient and forgiving person, so it came as a surprise to see her blow up. This caused the Heiress to think that maybe she had overreacted in the first place.
With silence in the air and everyone calm, Ruby started. "Before you go on and explain to me different ways on how I could've messed everything up for you, let me ask you a couple things: Were you or were you not aware that you were surrounded by Beowolves?"
Weiss nodded as Ruby continued.
"And you believe you had the entire situation under your control?"
Again, she nodded.
"But were you aware that you were less than 3 seconds away from being a Beowolf chew toy?"
Now that kept the girl quiet. She was so sure that she had them all where she wanted them. Perhaps it was an exaggeration-
"Those Beowolves had you surrounded on all sides. That's what they do to those they believe are weak prey. It's done to misdirect which of the pack would attack first. With a weapon like yours, even with fire dust, you wouldn't be able to properly defend yourself from all of them at the same time. The worst part was that you didn't even realize what was happening because you were too busy focusing on both your stance and how to attack."
The heiress was completely silent. To think that she was seconds close to becoming mortally wounded or, worse, dead. And the only thing she did in return was berate her 'savior'. Weiss was disappointed in herself. She was training to become a huntress, yet here she was acting like a spoiled brat that she had despised to be a few years ago. Before she could apologize, Ruby again cut her off.
"Look, I don't want to get in your way of becoming a huntress, but I think it's in both of our best interests to work together to achieve that goal, even if it means making a couple of mistakes and fixing them here and there. So what do you say? Partner?"
Ruby then brought forth her hand in a way that resembles Weiss's first meeting with Robin. Genuine, authentic, and no ulterior motive. It was scary, to say the least, on how reminiscent this was to that experience, but the girl digressed for now before shaking Ruby's hand.
"Partners it is then, Ruby Rose".
Author's Note: Okay, I know I said that I would post this chapter in early January, but college and other stuff got in the way so I had to think of a new way of tackling this. Unfortunately, sacrifices have to be made for the benefit of my education and life. With that, chapters would now be posted at least every week or 2 weeks at minimum. Not only that, they would a lot shorter than my normal ones. I am terribly sorry for all the broken promises I made and please be patient with the uploads. I really do wish on continuing this story and have a lot of plans for it.
I do not own any of the characters. All characters and names used are owned by either Rooster Teeth and Detective Comics (DC).
