A/N: Thanks for the overwhelming response you gave the first chapter, you guys are the best. So apparently insomnia is a thing so here is chapter 2.

"Take it easy, you were shot in the shoulder." Adam stood from his chair but Kim pushed herself back further up and put her hand up to stop him from coming closer.

"Who the hell are you?" She pointed a finger at him.

"Adam Ruzek, Detective at the twenty first."

"What are you doing in my room? I don't even know you."

"Sargent Platt sent me to get Michael from school."

"Michael, where is he?"

"Right there." Kim followed the direction of Adam's eye sight and found Michael curled into a chair, fast asleep. "He's fine."

"Why?"

"Platt can be very convincing." He smirked. "You've got a good kid Kim."

"Burgess, you can call me Burgess." She said in defence. "And thanks."

"Let me go get him, he wanted to stay until you woke up." Adam stood and walked to Michael, crouching down in front of his chair. "Mike." He shook him gently. "Your mom's awake."

"Hhmmm?" He grumbled.

"Your mom's awake." Michael sprung to his feet, finally awake.

"Mom." His voice held vulnerability. It was clear to Adam that the two of them were close.

"Hey, I'm fine." She pulled him into her good side and gave him a squeeze. "How was school?"

"School was fine." He tried to pull away from her but she kept him close. "I got an A in math today."

"That's amazing Mickey, I knew you could do it."

"Stop it mom." He finally managed to pull away from his mom. "I hate that name." He scoffed. "Mikey is a baby, I'm ten." Adam couldn't help the chuckle that escaped his lips. The two turning to look at him. Clearly they had forgotten he was there.

"I'll let the two of you alone, I'll be right outside."

"Can you stay with us Mr. Ruzek?" Michael slipped into the polite mold Kim had raised him in.

"Call me Adam." He smiled at him. "Only if it's okay with your mom." He looked at Kim.

"It's fine." She smiled at Adam.

Adam took a seat in the chair again. "He let me put pineapple on my pizza mom."

"On half the pizza." Adam chuckled. He never understood people and their obsession with pineapple. "That's not normal on a pie."

"That's what I keep telling him."

"Oh good, you're awake." Kim's nurse poked her head in the room to take her vitals. "I'll page Dr. Marcelle."

"Thanks." Adam gave him a small smile.

"If you need to be somewhere else to be Detective, you can head out." Kim felt bad he was stuck looking after her son.

"I'm good but it might be a little late for you kid. Don't you have school in the morning?"

"Yes, he does. Where are my things? I need to call my neighbour, she can take him." Kim had a support system she didn't think she deserved but she was thankful for it.

"It's late and I know you don't really know me but maybe I can stay with him if you want."

"I can't ask you to do that Detective."

"Adam, call me Adam." He smiled at her.

"You don't know us Adam, I can't ask you to do this for us."

"Good thing you didn't ask." His smile was pasted on his lips and Michael looked between Adam and his mother.

"Thanks, that would be a great help. You have your key Mikey?"

"Mom." He grumbled. "Yes, I have my key."

"Alright, grab your stuff and we're going to head out, leave your mom to rest yeah?"

"Okay." Kim mouthed a thank you to Adam.

"I want you to listen to Adam, am I being clear?"

"Yes ma'am." He stood next to Adam.

"Why don't you wait outside a few minutes while I talk with Adam." Kim asked her son and he simply nodded, walking outside to wait.

"Listen Adam, I really appreciate what you're doing to help."

"It's nothing." He insisted.

"Maybe to you it's not but I'm used to doing it on my own, except for Trudy because I can't stop that woman even if I tried and asking for help is not a thing I do."

"You're strong and you're independent, I get that. I'm certainly not trying to step on any toes but if you're on Platt's good side than that's extra in my book." He told her truthfully. "So just get some rest and I'll take care of your son for the next couple of days until you get out. That sound good to you?"

"Okay." She relented. "I just have a few rules and he knows what they are but I don't want him trying anything with you." She gave him the bed time, video game and food rules before Michael came in for one last hug.

"Be good, please."

"I will. Good night mom."

"Night Michael." She kissed his cheek and let him go, Michael heading out with Adam.

"Alright Mike. We have two stops to do really quick and we'll get you home and squared away. You good with that?"

"Yeah." They drove to the district first, needing to give Platt an update on Kim's condition, Michael in Platt's spot at the head of the district.

"Can I trust you Ruzek?"

"Come on Sarge. I doubt you would have asked me to pick the kid up that you didn't trust me."

"Point taken special sauce but still. He's a good boy and his mom is good police and if you're not going to take this seriously, I'll take care of him myself."

"I got it Sarge. I'll just swing by the bullpen first to grab my change of clothes from my locker and then I'll bring him home."

"Good. I'll keep him with me while you do." Adam tapped the counter and Michael looked up at him.

"I've got to go see my boss and we're going to go." Michael nodded and Adam went up the stairs two at a time, slipping his hand in the palm scanner and heading up to the bullpen. The rest of the team was still in.

"Ruzek, my office." Voight called him in as soon as he saw him.

"Sorry about today Sarge. Looks like I'm going to be in and out for a few days, just until officer Burgess can get out of the hospital."

"Alright, you can help from here in the meantime."

"Thanks, Sarge. I'll be back in the morning after I drop the kid off at school."

"Do what you have to do."

"Thanks." He left the office and made a B-line for the locker room to retrieve some essentials. He knew he'd have to swing by his place again to grab some more but for tonight, this would do.

"So, what's Platt got you doing now?" Kevin leaned against the row of locker while Adam emptied his.

"Not Platt." Adam stuffed more things in his bag. "Officer got shot and I offered to look after her kid until she's released."

"Adam Ruzek and a kid?" Kevin chuckled. "Looking forward to see who dies first."

"Funny Kev." Adam couldn't help the smile at his friend's ribbing.

"My money's on you."

"Hundred and you're on." Adam believed in his chances so he wasn't worried about losing the cash.

"How cute is she?" Kevin changed his tactics.

"Kevin." Adam warned.

"Hundred says you fall for her."

"No chance." He zipped his bag up and flung it over his shoulder. "I'll see in the morning." They did their handshake and Adam was out the door, heading back down. Michael was owning the front desk as if he'd always been there, Platt giving him instructions as he went.

"Hey Sarge?" The two of them looked up at the same time.

"Ready to go?" He chuckled.

"Yeah." Michael hopped down from his spot and came to join Adam.

"You listen to Detective Ruzek, we clear?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Good." She offered him a high five. "Night Kid, Ruzek."

"Sarge." He tried a high five with a chuckle and if looks could kill, he would have been dead. "See you in the morning." She waved him off and the two were out the door. Michael rode shot gun again and he gave Adam his address. He didn't need directions, knowing the city so well but he let Michael voice them out loud all the same. He stopped his truck in front of a two-story brownstone apartment complex and killed the engine. "Lead the way." He let Michael walk ahead of him and he took everything on his way up to the third floor. Michael slipped his key in the door when the door behind them opened.

"Michael sweetie. Where's your mom?" An older looking woman asked, eyeing Adam up and down.

"She's in the hospital Mrs. Molina."

"And who are you?" She asked Adam with an accusatory tone.

"I'm Detective Ruzek." He extended his hand for her to shake. "I work at the same district as his mother." He explained. "I'll be staying with Michael until his mother gets her discharge."

"Okay. You need anything Michael and you come knock okay?"

"Yes Mrs. Molina."

"You take good care of him, yes?"

"Yes ma'am"

"Good." She returned into her apartment and left Adam a little bit dumb struck in the middle of the hall.

"That was fucked up." He said under his breath.

"Mom hates it when we swear." Michael slipped into the house, Adam on his heels.

"Sorry." Adam mumbled. "You get ready for bed now and I'll let you have fifteen minutes worth of videogames, mom's orders." He added when Michael was about to rebuke the demand.

"Linens are in the closet pantry." Michael said off handed as he went to change and brush his teeth.

"Thanks Mike." Adam had to admit the kid was pretty mature for his age, something Adam guessed came from his upbringing. He set the couch up and started looking through the house. He found pictured on a shelf over the tv and took one in his hand. It was Kim holding a newborn Michael, the picture, no doubt taken by her ex Mathew Baker. She was smiling lovingly at her son and it made him smile. He set it down and picked another one, this time of Michael older, dressed in baseball gear, scooped up by a very proud Kim.

"Mom comes to every practice and every game." Adam was startled out of his exploring.

"You play any other sport?"

"No, mom says it's too expensive."

"Sorry to hear that."

"It's okay, I have my skateboard and my Switch so it's pretty much all I need." He shrugged. Adam could see the disappointment on his face.

"You know it's okay to want to more things, it doesn't mean you're selfish."

"I know it's just that she works so hard and I know she's doing her best to give me everything I want."

"What about your dad? Do you still see him?"

"Mom has a restraining order against him. He's a real jerk." Adam's insides jumped but he schooled his features around Michael.

"Good thing he's not around then." He offered him a smile. "Come on, bed time."

"What about my fifteen minutes of videogames?"

"Ten."

"You said fifteen." Michael countered.

"Yeah but now it's ten, take it or leave it."

"Fine." He turned around grumbling. Adam watched him disappear in his room before he pulled out his phone, firing a quick text. When he got the reply he was looking for about ten minutes later, he went for the videogame and the apartment became dead quiet. He took a frame where Kim was squeezing a very uncomfortable Michael and he couldn't stop the laugh that rumbled inside his chest. There was clearly love inside these four walls but Adam wanted to make sure to do his homework right about her ex, an attachment to both mother and son that came out of nowhere but suddenly felt right. He'd take as good care of Michael as if he would Sammy because Kim depended on him to keep him as happy and safe as he was while she was stuck in the hospital and he wouldn't let her down.
