A/N: I want to thank everyone who read and reviewed last chapter. I'm super happy of the turnout this story is getting and I didn't expect it to be popular like that. Here's a new chapter for your guys.
Kim woke with a high level of anxiety. She knew Michael was in good hands because Trudy wouldn't have sent Adam Ruzek to take care of him if she didn't trust the man. She looked at the clock and it was pretty early but she needed to make sure Michael made it to school on time so she called the home line, not having Adam's cell number.
Adam had done some more exploring before finally stripping of his jeans and plaid shirt, slipping his gun under the pillow and lying down. It took him a few minutes with his eyes closed before falling asleep. He shifted on his side and could hear a faint ringing in the background but the longer it rang, the louder it got.
"Shit." He swung his legs over the side of the couch and looked around for the phone. When he finally located it and answered, Michael was coming out of his room, running his hand through his hair.
"Is it mom?"
"Hello." Adam answered, sleep still laced in his voice. Hey, I know it's early but I was afraid that Michael would miss school. "My alarm was just about to go off." And it did, Kim being able to hear it through the phone. "Michael wants to talk to you." Adam handed Michael the phone while he grabbed his things and headed towards the bathroom, needing to freshen up before heading into the district.
"Mom, when are you getting out?" I should be out by tonight, not sure when exactly. How is it going with Adam? "He's cool; he said he'd look after me until you got out so he's actually going to bring me to school." Okay. Don't forget your baseball gear, you have practice after school. "Shit, I forgot." Language. That's a drop in your allowance. "Sorry mom. Who's going to bring me to practice?"
"I can bring you." Adam offered, slipping a shirt over his head and clipping his star on his hip, retrieving the gun from under his pillow.
"She wants to talk to you." Michael handed Adam the phone.
"Go get dressed, I'll make breakfast after I'm done talking to your mom." Adam, I can't let you do that. Michael isn't your responsibility. "He is until you get out. Kim, it's fine, you don't need to worry about him today." I'll owe you one big time. "Don't sweat it, just take it easy today." Okay, thanks. "Sure." He hung up and headed towards the kitchen, looking through the fridge for something. He found eggs and bacon as Michael joined him, pulling some bread out of the cupboard.
"Are you really going to bring me to practice?"
"Yeah, are you okay with that? If not, I can ask Platt to do it."
"No, you is fine. Thanks."
"Thanks for what?"
"For being so nice to us. You don't know mom and you don't know me but you're still willing to help us out."
"Don't sweat it." He smiled, firing up the stove. "Plus, I kind of value my life and if I'm not nice, Platt will kill me soo." He chuckled, making him laugh.
"Trudy is scary." Michael agreed.
"That she is." Adam agreed with a laugh and he started making them breakfast, Michael handling the toast. As soon as the food was eaten and the table cleared, Michael brushed his teeth and they were on their way to school. Michael spoke about his friends and school under Adam's questioning, happy to tell someone about the fun things that were going on at his school. "You have a little girlfriend?" Adam asked with a laugh as Michael blushed.
"No." He said sheepishly.
"Your face says something else."
"There's this girl that I like but we're friends and I don't know what to do." First love was sweet and Adam remembered what it was like.
"There was this girl, her name was Maddison." Adam mused. "I was eleven at the time and she was twelve and I had the biggest crush on her." He chuckled. His dad had given him a pointer or two and he had acted bold and asked her out.
"And what did you do?"
"My dad always said that girls loved flowers so I sneaked in our neighbours garden one morning and cut a bunch of daffodils and I gave them to her as soon as I made it to school and asked if she wanted to hang out with me."
"What did she say?"
"She smiled and said yes."
"Flowers, got it." Michael took a mental note as Adam cut the engine in the school's parking lot.
"Alright Romeo, let's get you inside." Adam chuckled. As soon as Mike's feet hit the ground, his eyes fell on a boy down the parking lot.
"Sammy." Michael yelled as the boy ran towards them.
"Hey uncle Adam." Sammy said after sharing a handshake with his friend.
"That's your uncle Adam?" Michael looked between Adam and his friend.
"Yeah." Sammy grinned. "What are you doing with him?"
"Mom got shot on the job, she's in the hospital. Adam is staying with me until she gets out. He's even going to bring me to practice later."
"Sweet."
"Looks like I'll be able to watch you play after all." He exchanged a fist bump with his nephew.
"Cool."
"Alright guys. I have to go into work." Adam pulled Michael's sports bag out of his truck. "I'll see you after school but if you need anything today you call me okay?"
"I already have your number uncle Adam." Sammy smiled.
"I know but same goes for you Michael." Adam handed him his card.
"Thanks. Come on Sammy, we're going to be late if we don't get moving."
"Later uncle Adam."
"Later guys."
"Later." Michael looked at Adam over his shoulder. Adam waited until they were behind the gates before getting into his truck and heading towards the Twenty First. Platt wasn't in her usual spot at the front desk so Adam simply went up towards the bullpen. Voight was the only one there so Adam found his spot at his desk and finished up the paperwork for the last case they were on. Adam hated doing the paperwork but he was committed to staying on top of it.
"You with us today Ruzek?" Voight asked from his desk, Adam looking up and nodding.
"Up until four, then I have to go pick up Officer Burgess's son. Should be done by tomorrow Sarge."
"Alright." The rest of the team trickled in and they got a case off the bat, occupying them for most of the day.
Kim took a deep breath after having hung up with Adam and Michael. She hated not being in control and being stuck in here was how out of control she could get. She swung her legs over the side of her bed but the quick movement gave her a hot flash and she had to take a few deep breaths to steady herself.
"Easy there, officer Burgess." Dr. Marcelle walked into her room.
"Yeah, didn't think I'd be light headed like that this morning."
"You better lie back down, breakfast is about to be served."
"Am I going to be stuck with these dizzy spells long?" She did as she was told and lied back down.
"Might just be a couple of day, could leave once your body gets real food in it."
"Am I still good to be discharged today?"
"Let's take a look, shall we?" She nodded and let Dr. Marcelle do a full check-up. "How does that feel?" He was now checking her wound and the muscle tissue around it.
"Sore."
"Just sore of it hurts."
"Just sore." It was a dull pain but she wasn't sure if it had to do with the painkillers they were giving her or just genuine feeling.
"Let's try to see if you can move it at least a little bit." He removed the sling around her shoulder and made slow movements. "That's good."
"How long do I have to be off duty."
"Couple of weeks, maybe three."
"Okay and anything I need to look out for or that I'm not allowed to do?"
"No heavy lifting, light exercises. The physiotherapist will swing be a little bit later to give you some pointers. Do you have anyone to come pick you up?"
"I just need to make a phone call or two, I should be able to get someone to pick me up."
"Good because although you don't need to have someone around you at all times, I would prefer you get some kind of check-in every now and then."
"Sure, yeah, I can make that happen."
"Good so I'll start on your discharge papers."
"Thanks doc."
"Anytime." He patted her leg and left the room. Kim reached for her phone and dialled the one person she thought could come pick her up.
"Hey Sarge, I need a favour." She talked with Platt some more before hanging up, her breakfast being put on her table. "Great." She grumbled when she opened the dome on top of the plate. It was a bland coffee with a toast that looked dry.
"Don't see anything you like in there?"
"Taye." Kim was glad to see her partner walk through the door. "Please tell me you got me something better than the crap they serve here."
"I've got you covered." She handed her a bag with a latte. She found fresh croissants from the bakery they always stopped by while on shift and Kim was grateful for that.
"You are godsent." She inhaled the content of the bag.
"Who's taking care of Michael while you're in here? Mrs. Molina?" She took a seat next to her and watched her eat, her temporary partner in the car outside.
"No, a Detective from our district. Did you ever hear of Adam Ruzek?"
"Big shot Detective in Intelligence, that's all I know." Kim didn't need details about that man's life. All she needed to know was if he could take care of her son who was the most precious thing in the world to her.
"Alright, thanks." Their chat was interrupted by Taye's radio crackling to life. Before she had a chance to reply, her partner did so she had to get up and leave, promising to swing by her place later in the evening to check on her. Kim quietly enjoyed the food and latte she was brought and hoped that she would get out of here sooner rather than later. The physiotherapist showed up about an hour after breakfast was served and the last thing she needed now was Dr. Marcelle's go ahead to leave.
She pushed the table away from her bed and tried sitting on the side of her bed another time and no wave of nausea showed so that was her first good sign. She had seen her bag of personal effects but she didn't have any clean clothes with her so she would have to wait for Trudy to show up later with the clothes she had walked into the Twenty First.
Adam finished writing up a report for the case they had worked and he was glad it had wrapped in a timely fashion, really not needing to show up late to school to get Michael to practice. He dropped it on Voight's desk and headed for the locker room to grab his things.
"Domestic Ruzek, never thought I'd see the day." Adam chuckled as Kevin walked into the locker room.
"I'd hardly call that domestic." He laughed, grabbing his coat out of his locker. "Just found out the kid is friends with Sammy."
"Isn't that convenient."
"Get out of here. I'll catch you in the morning." He tapped his locker shut and gave Kevin a tap on the chest.
"See you brother." Adam made his way towards the school and went in to get the two boys.
Adam had called his sister Kate and told her that he would take care of Sammy after the practice, bringing him back to her place after grabbing some dinner.
"Damn Sammy, that swing is improving." Adam commented as the waitress brought them their food.
"Dad's been helping me practice." Adam didn't miss the look on Michael's face at the mention of Sammy's dad. "Maybe we could practice together?" Sammy asked Michael.
"That would be cool, I just have to ask my mom." Michael gave his plate all his attention.
"Sweet."
"Alright, eat up, then it's back home. I'm pretty sure the two of you have some homework to."
"You're such a buzzkill." Sammy rolled his eyes but Adam wasn't impressed.
"Watch your tone kid, you know that doesn't work on me."
"Sorry." He put his head down and ate his food. Michael polished his plate in record time.
"I see you're a heavy eater." Adam chuckled.
"Mom says I'm growing." He shrugged.
"I can see that." It took them twenty minutes for all their food to be eaten and they were back out, Sammy the first stop on the way to Kim's. Platt had texted Adam that he had picked her up and taken her home. He killed the engine in front of her building. "Come on, I'll walk you up."
"You don't have to do that."
"Of course, I do." Adam grabbed his sports bag while Michael took his school bag and they went up the stairs together. They could hear music coming through on the other side of the door.
"Mom's home." Michael slipped his key in excitedly and pushed it open. "Mom?"
"In here baby." The two boys went towards the kitchen where they found Kim awkwardly trying to get some food ready for herself.
"Let me help you mom." Michael went to her aid and Adam just put the sports back against the wall.
"Detective Ruzek." She acknowledged Adam.
"You can call me Adam." She blushed lightly as she remembered him telling her the same the previous night.
"Sorry, old habits." She smiled at him.
"Thanks for bringing him back, you really didn't have to do all of that."
"Nah, it's totally fine, Michael is a cool kid, it was fun. Right Mike?"
"Oh yeah." She grinner. "Swung two home runs and my team won."
"Good job." Adam could see that Kim wasn't comfortable with the sling and he could relate how annoying it could be, especially when it's your dominant hand.
"Alright, I'll let the two of you for a little one on one." He pushed himself from the doorframe.
"Thanks for taking care of him Adam."
"My pleasure." He smiled at her. "You be good for your mom and help her out okay?"
"I will."
"Good. I'll see you around the Twenty First when you get back on the beat."
"Thanks for dinner Adam.
"No problem. See you at your next game." He had promised both boys that he'd be there to cheer them on. "Good night Kim." Adam let himself out and headed back home for a much-needed beer. Tomorrow he was going back to normal and he was looking forward to getting back to a simpler life.
A/N: Alright so Kim is finally home and Adam can go back to his own little life but is it just as simple as going home and forgetting about it? I hope you guys liked it and please take a few seconds to review before you go, your thoughts mean the world to me. - Sarra
