A/N: Thanks to everyone who left reviews on the last chapter. I'm sorry for being MIA lately, I've had trouble focusing on writing and when I do it doesn't come out how I'd like but here's the result after more than a week of trying.
The following weeks, Adam was a constant in Michael and Kim's life. He would pick Michael up every morning and get him from school any time Kim was stuck in a jam whenever intelligence wasn't stuck in a case and it worked well for the both of them. Kim always felt it was strange how it was so easy between the two when she made it home to find Michael sitting at the table doing homework and Adam at the stove, making dinner.
"I'm really sorry." Kim walked into her place out of breath.
"It's fine Kim."
"That's four days this week." She dropped her things by the counter and kissed Michael on the top of his head. "How was your day buddy?"
"Good mom. Did you catch any bad guys?" He asked, his nose still in his homework.
"It was quiet until the end of shift, as usual." She rolled her eyes, Adam laughing lightly at the tone in her voice, his back still to her. "I'm really sorry." She ran a hand on Adam's back as she took a spot next to him.
"It's fine Kim, Intelligence has been quiet this week." He smiled at her. "Are you okay?" He asked when he saw she was still slightly flustered.
"Yeah, long day, lots of running." She sighed.
"There's wine waiting for you in the fridge when you get out of the shower."
"You are a godsent."
"I wouldn't go that far." He chuckled. "Dinner's almost ready."
"I'll make it quick." She kissed his cheek and headed towards her bathroom to get cleaned up. She let the hot water work on her knots, the last chase killing whatever energy she had left from the morning. All she wanted to do was curl into Adam on the couch and think of nothing else. After she kissed him, she found herself wanting to do it more often, but they were taking it slow and didn't want to get Michael's hopes up, so they were never too affectionate in front of him for the time being. When she came back out, a glass of wine was waiting for her and Michael was setting the table. "Smells good in here."
"I made Fettucine Alfredo with some garlic bread."
"I haven't eaten that since High school." She grinned.
"I helped to make the salad." Michael said proudly.
"I showed him how to make the sauce too."
"Well, I can't wait to taste it." She ruffled his hair and took her seat. Michael was more than happy to talk their ear off about school again, the science projects taking a large portion of his days lately. Kim was happy he was interested in that and when he could Adam was always happy to lend a hand there, the two always having fun doing them together.
"What about you? How was your day?" Adam questioned.
"You know, same old. Chased some bad guys through the city, made three arrests." She said casually.
"How'd that go?"
"Standard procedure."
"Really?" He gestured to his neck and she pulled on her shirt to hide the bruise she had expected to show at some point in the evening.
"Really." She knew that they talk about that later in the evening. They spent a nice dinner again and Kim was happy when Adam accepted to stay for something a little bit stronger than wine after Michael had gone to bed.
"So?" He placed his hand along the back on the couch and Kim pulled her legs under her.
"So."
"Oh, we're going to dance around that are we?"
"It's nothing Adam, just a bruise. Won't be the last one you see on me." She assured him.
"I'm well aware of that but it doesn't mean that I like seeing them there."
"Adam, we're not going to do this. You can't come in here and have a say in my life, my work."
"That's not what I'm trying to do, believe me I know the pull of our job and the rush it gives us, but I'd be lying if these past months, against everything in me, I started developing feelings for you, and for Michael."
"Adam."
"I'm just trying to be honest Kim." He pushed a strand of hair out of her eye. "I'm not a relationship guy, I never was because it was easier." He was very aware when Kim placed a hand on his leg, a shot of electricity shooting up his spine. "When you were shot and Trudy asked me to go pick Michael up, I did everything I could to get out of doing it, but Platt is insistent, and she pretty much didn't give me any choice." He smirked.
"I can totally see her grilling you." She chuckled.
"She was on my ass in a second but when I made it to his school to pick him up, Michael was full of spunk. I was a total stranger to him, and he just held his own. Then I met you and I knew exactly where he took it from."
"I'm trying to raise him to be able to take care of himself but I'm sorry if he was a handful."
"The more I spend time with him, and with you, the more I want to be with you. Does that sound absolutely crazy?"
"It doesn't." She breathed out. "The way that you are with Michael, with me." She trailed off, getting closer to him.
"You deserve every second of it." He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers. He ran his fingers through her hair as she deepened the kiss. His right hand cupped her cheek and Kim moved to straddle him. They made out but Adam pulled away when he needed some air. "Kim." He breathed out. "What are we doing?" He pecked her lips.
"I don't know." She leaned her forehead against his. "I don't want to get Michael's hopes up."
"What about yours?"
"You're not Matthew." She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
"I would never do anything, anything to hurt you, or Michael." He ran his thumb against her cheek.
"I trust you Adam."
"And I'll do everything in my power to never break that trust."
"Thank you." She kissed him.
"What about Michael? What do you want to tell him?"
"I want us to take it slow, get him on board?"
"I wouldn't worry about Michael."
"What do you know that I don't Adam Ruzek?"
"You remember that day I spent with him after he flipped on you about Baker being out of the picture?" She nodded, resting her hands against his chest. "He said that I wouldn't hurt you like that but when I told him that we didn't have that kind of relationship, he was so disappointed."
"Michael was always a happy kid but after the initial shock he went through after Matthew left, he became a bit more defiant, he smiled less. I tried my best to give him everything and be interested in what he was interested in, go to every one of his games but work wasn't always easy to do that. Thank god I had Platt on my side to make it easier, she's been the best."
"She's tough but I can definitely see the love she has for Michael, and for you."
"The rest of patrol's been so jealous." She laughed and he couldn't help the smile that was on his lips at her happiness.
"Back to Michael." He looked in the direction of the bedrooms.
"We could sit him down, be honest with him?"
"I'd like to take you out on a date first."
"I don't know Adam. With Michael, it's more complicated."
"I know but we could ask Mrs. Molina next door, or Platt, I'm sure we can figure something out." He ran his hands against her arms. "And I'd like to ask Michael if he's okay with it first."
"Every time I think I've figured you out, you surprise me."
"Is that a good thing?"
"Very good." She smiled before pressing her lips to his again. She pressed herself against him as she ran her fingers through his hair. His hands settled on her hips as they deepened it. Adam's lips were soft and all she wanted to do was keep kissing them. She hated to have to pull away, but air was beginning to be in short supply. "Are you up for joining us for breakfast tomorrow?" She wispered, her eyes still closed.
"I would love that. Are you off?"
"First Saturday off in a while."
"Are you sure that you don't want to spend that time with Michael?"
"He'll be happy to see you tomorrow."
"Maybe I should head out then, it's getting late." It wasn't really but he didn't want to overstay his welcome and he certainly didn't want her to do something she wasn't comfortable with.
"Maybe you should." She agreed. He helped her off his lap and he stood, Kim following behind. "Thanks again for this week, you've been a huge help with Michael while I'm at work.
"I love spending the time with him and seeing you more makes it even better." He walked through her front door.
"Sweet talker." She growled playfully.
"One of my many charms." He smirked. "I'll see you in the morning." He leaned down and kissed her.
"Good night." She whispered as his lips left hers.
"Good night Kim." Seconds past before Adam finally turned around and left, Kim watching him go until he rounded the corner. She did her whole night routine with a smile on her face. She hadn't seen Adam coming, not even close but she was more than willing to give him a real chance. He was great with Michael and he was her number one priority so any man who treated her as such won them points in her book. She fell asleep with good thoughts, excited about the next morning.
Adam woke up early because Intelligence was technically off today but they never had official days off so he wanted to make sure that he had as much time with Kim and Michael as he could fit in before a potential call came in. He was just hoping that he wasn't too early for the two of them.
Michael woke up and the house was still quiet but that wasn't unusual. When his mom had off, it was always like that. He rubbed his eyes and headed for the kitchen to make himself some breakfast to let his mom sleep, but he jumped when he got to the kitchen.
"Mom, what are you doing up so early?" He mumbled.
"I had a good night sleep and thought that we could have a big breakfast." She smiled at him. She had already brewed some coffee for herself and she was getting some pancakes ready.
"You don't usually do pancakes unless someone comes over. Is someone coming over?" He asked suspiciously.
"What? I can't spend a nice morning with my son without having ulterior motives?" Michael was about to give her a counter argument when he was stopped by a knock on the door. "Why don't you go see who's there?" She continued doing the prep work with a smile, waiting for the reaction to come.
"Adam." The pitch of his voice was higher than usual, and she was glad the surprise had worked.
"Morning bud." He ruffled his hair. "Why so surprised?"
"Mom didn't say anything about." The end of his sentence died on his tongue when he realised what she had done. "Mommm." Adam laughed as he followed him into the kitchen.
"What's wrong?" She smirked at Adam who winked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me Adam was coming to eat with us?"
"I wanted it to be a surprise. Can you set the table for me please?"
"I'll give you a hand with that." Adam offered as Kim finished getting the food ready. She listened to them as they talked about baseball and they sat down as she started serving the food.
"Are you off today Adam?" Michael asked hopefully as he stuffed his mouth with some food.
"Hopefully it stays quiet so I can have a day off, we don't have a lot of those in Intelligence."
"Can we go together to the park and practice my swing?"
"Sure, if that's okay with your mom." He looked at Kim
"I'm okay with it." She stood to make some more pancakes and winked at Adam. Adam smiled back and took it as cue to ask Michael his question.
"Hey Mike?" Adam leaned back in his chair and waited until he had his attention.
"Yeah?" His mouth was full of his last bite.
"Your mother and I were talking last night, and I wanted to run something by you."
"What is it? Are you going to stop coming around?" Adam hated that his was so used to the letdown that he expected the worse.
"Actually, what I wanted to say is that I like hanging out with you and your mom and I was wonder if it was okay with you if I asked your mother out on a date?" Kim turned and leaned against the counter, waiting for a reaction, any reaction.
"You mean go to the restaurant just you and her?"
"Something like that yeah." Adam chuckled at the gleam in Michael's eyes.
"Maybe we could ask Mrs. Molina to babysit me, or even Trudy? You wouldn't have to worry about me mom."
"So that's a yes?"
"Yes, yes, yes." Adam was happy to see his excitement and so was Kim.
"Alright, eat up and then we can go to the park." Adam watched Michael as he was suddenly having trouble holding in place on his chair and he was happy about the fact that he was still on board with him asking his mom out and that took an invisible weight off his shoulder. Michael quickly polished his second plate and put it in the sink to go get changed and Adam helped Kim to empty the table and he wrapped his arms around her waist and pressed a kiss to her neck.
"That went better than I thought." He admitted.
"Me too." She breathed out. Even if Adam had told her that he was pretty confident Michael was going to be happy about it she had that tiny fear creep in her that he wouldn't be on board. "Are you sure you're okay with going to the park with us?" She leaned into him.
"Sounds like a pretty good way to spend my day off if you ask me."
"I'm ready." Michael bounced back in the kitchen fully dressed.
"Let me go get changed and then we can go." Adam released her and his phone rung in his pockets.
"It'll just be a second. Ruzek." He closed his eyes as Kevin told him about a fresh new case. "Yeah, I'll be right there."
"Do you have to go?" Kim just walked into the kitchen.
"Sorry." Michael was tucked into Kim's side with disappointment written all over his face. "But I promise that we'll get a do over as soon as I can okay?" Michael simply nodded. "I'll call you as soon as I can." He leaned down and kissed her quickly on the lips.
"Be careful."
"I will." Kim and Michael watched him go with one last look at them but even if his day wasn't going as planned, he was happy that Michael was on board with him dating his mother and that meant a win for him and that was enough to make his day.
A/N: So Kim is opening up to Adam and Michael is happy that the two are heading towards a romantic relationship. I hope you guys liked it and please take a few seconds to review before you go, your thoughts mean everything to me. - Sarra
