A/N: Thanks to everyone who's been loving this story so far. Sorry for taking so much time to write BUT, since the finale, that I'm still not over a hundred percent over for many reasons, I've had one of the worse case of writer's block I've experienced in a long time on top of going through some stuff in my personal life that doesn't go together with my creative brain so thank you for being so patient with me.

In the following days, Kim got to spend little time with Adam. Both she and him had been swamped at the 21stand Adam found himself texting her every night apologizing for not being able to make it to dinner on time, his nights often finishing in the early morning hours. Kim found herself missing his presence more than she was ready to admit it to others, happy to keep that little secret close to the vest. She walked in her place with an equally tired Michael in tow on the Friday and although Adam had promised to try to make it for dinner this time, she wasn't holding her breath about it.

"Put your bag in your room and we'll order pizza, I'm not even going to attempt to act like I want to cook anything." She grumbled as Michael went out of sight.

"Is Adam going to make it for dinner tonight mom?" He returned with a brand-new hoodie on and slumped down at the kitchen table.

"If he can get away from work."

"He said that all week." He protested.

"I know Michael, but you know the kind of cases Intelligence gets. They aren't cut and dry and Adam doesn't have control over the hours it takes them to solve a case."

"I know." He mumbled, pulling the hoodie over his head. Kim wouldn't usually allow for him to keep it up, but she was too tired, and Michael seemed too cranky for her to even push the issue. "If he swings by it'll be a nice surprise." She ran a hand across his back as she pulled her phone out of her back pocket to get their pizza order.

Adam was standing in the breakroom, sugar shaker in hand, his brain barely functioning as he poured too much sugar in his cup.

"Are you sure you've got enough sugar in there." Kevin walked in with a chuckle.

"I need this fucking week to be over." He grumbled as Kevin's voice pulled him out of his funk. "I haven't seen Kim, or Michael all week, we need to get out of this place so I can at least get one early evening."

"From your lips to God's ears brother." The whole team was tired, it was written all over their faces but since going out on his date with Kim, he found it hard to be away from both for long periods of time and 5 days was one too many.

"We've got a lead guys!" Jay poked his head inside the break room, and they all returned to the bullpen, fingers crossed that this lead would be the right one and that they would all be able to go home at a respectable hour for once.

Matt made it to Chicago in the early morning hours of Friday. He had captured more intel on what had been going on with Kim and while he was happy that the new guy wasn't coming around so often, he also found out that he was a detective in an elite unit of the city and that they had been quite busy. But he counted on him being busy longer so he could get closer to Kim without raising suspicion around him. He knew he had a big day ahead of him until he made his move.

He watched as she got out of the building with their son, who was becoming quite the young man and followed them at a distance. He watched her drop their son off at school, watched her as she grabbed herself some breakfast from a small diner on the way to the district. He went on about his day when he could no longer keep an eye on Kim. Then, he would wait patiently for the phone call that told him that Kim was off her shift to pick their son up from school. He knew for a fact that Adam Ruzek was still stuck up in his unit by the time during, making this even better for him. Things were finally looking up for him and he was hoping that once they were face to face, he would be able to get them back.

Adam was happy when the team caught the perp. It was later than he would have hoped but he had texted Kim saying that he would be there in time to tuck Michael in, so he walked into the locker room with a smile on his face.

Kim was about done with her day. She was tired, ready to crash, but Adam texted her mere minutes ago, telling her that he was going to be on his way to tuck Michael in so that's the only thing that kept her moving.

"Was that Adam?' Michael bounced into the living room where Kim had curled herself into the couch while she waited.

"Yeah, that was him baby. He said that he's leaving the district soon and heading straight here to tuck you in."

"Ok, I'll go read in my room until he gets here." He hugged his mother.

"Alright." She squeezed him extra tight against her chest before releasing him and watching him go back to his room. Kim jumped from the couch where she heard the knock on the front door, her smile growing wider at the thought of seeing Adam on the other side of the door. "It's about time you got here Detective." She swung the door open but the smile on her face faded when she saw who was on the other side.

"Good evening sweetheart." He grinned.

"Matt." She tried to keep the fear out of her voice and out of her face. "You can't be here." She finally found her voice, trying to close the door in his face but he extended his arm to stop her from doing it and in her second of hesitation, he pushed past her and inside her place.

"Where's Michael? I was hoping to be able to see him." He turned to face Kim.

"He is sleeping over at his friend's house tonight." She was hoping that Michael would stay hidden until she tried to diffuse the situation. She couldn't call out for anyone's help by making a scene, not wanting to anger Matt. She could feel that he was barely holding on to his anger.

"Then it's the perfect time for us to talk." He wrapped his hand around her upper arm and gave it a firm tug to pull her towards him. "Because I think it's high time that we re-visit my rights to see my son."

"You have no right to see your son, not now, not anymore." She gritted her teeth together, the urge to keep his anger at bay being overpowered by the need to protect her son from harm.

"YOU ARE THE ONE WHO'S TO BLAME FOR THAT." His hand connected with her cheek with force, sending her head to the side. "YOU HAD NO RIGHT TO TAKE HIM AWAY FROM ME." He spat the words to her face.

Michael heard the knock on the door and pushed the covers over his legs but stopped dead in his action to swing his legs over the side of the bed when he heard his father's voice. He hadn't heard it since being a boy, but he could never forget it. He could hear the same anger in his words as the ones he had thrown at him after he had knocked the blue paint over on the kitchen table. He got out of bed quietly and found the old phone that was sitting in his room, one he rarely used. He punched in the one number that could help him.

Adam was surprised to see the number flash on his screen as he descended the stairs to the 21st after everyone had already left. Kim always called from her phone and if it was Michael, he always called from hers as well.

"Hey Darlin, did your phone die?" He chuckled. Adam, it's Michael. He was whispering and something snapped in Adam, his instincts kicking in. "Michael, what's going on?" He's here, my dad in the house, in the kitchen with mom. "I want you to hide in your wardrobe and don't move from there until I come get you, do I make myself clear?" He's going to hurt her, I know it. Please hurry. "I'm on my way." He jogged to his car and peeled out of the lot behind the 21st. He knew he couldn't put his lights on in case Baker heard. His mission was to make it there quickly before anyone got hurt. His heart was pounding in his chest as he put his car into park in front of Kim's building. He took the stairs two at a time when he heard the voices carry from her floor all the way down to the lobby.

Kim was surprised by the sheer force of the hit on her cheek and her body didn't register fast enough for the following assault. She was pushed against the ground, his body pinning her enough that she couldn't move her body enough to kick him in the groin to give her the time to get the upper hand on him. Her cop training was there, and she was trying to give herself room to make use of it, but it was impossible. A punch came next as he pressed his knee into her chest to keep her pinned to the ground. She protected herself as best as she could until suddenly, the weight oppressing her chest was no longer restricting her airways. She scrambled to her feet to find Adam on top of Matt, his left fist already connecting with his jaw.

"All you had to do was keep your sorry ass away from her and the boy." He growled as he kept punching away. Matt tried protecting himself from the assault this time, but Adam's mind was too far gone and all he wanted now was to beat the son of a bitch to a pulp until he could no longer stand. "You're not so strong when you go up against grown ass men your size huh?" Blood was coming out of his nose as Adam continued his assault.

"Adam." His name was uttered but his brain didn't register it. Michael had slipped out of his room, ignoring Adam's direct order when he heard Adam breaking the door down and the yelling dying down. He was now in Kim's arms as she tried to comfort him but all he wanted to do was reach out to Adam.

"ADAM." Michael screeched and it seemed to be enough to pull Adam out of the fit of rage he found himself in. He looked back at him, seeing Kim with blood on her face and hands and he returned his attention to Matt, who has breathing harshly. He turned him on his stomach and pulled his radio out.

"5021 IDA, requesting back-up at my location with an ambo." A patrol showed up minutes later to pick him up.

"We were told to wait for your instructions before taking him away." The young patrolman told Adam.

"Bring him to the 21st, down in the cage, I'll be right behind you in a minute." He waited for the duo to leave with Baker before he made his way to both Michael and Kim, pulling them both in his arms. "I'm sorry I wasn't here sooner."

"It's okay." Kim breathed harshly. "How did you know I was in trouble?"

"Michael called me from the land line." He ruffled his hair. "You did great kid."

"You told me to call you if I needed anything."

"Good man." He smiled at him. "We need to get you checked out." He looked at Kim with a worried brow, keeping his anger at bay.

"Adam, I'm fine."

"Please let them check you out so I can breathe better." The medics showed up through the front door and went directly to Kim, sitting her at the kitchen table to assess her injuries. When they judged her fine enough not to be transported to Med, they were left alone.

"So, what happens now?"

"I will pack you both a bag and I will bring you to my place before I take care of Baker." Kim was about to protest when she saw Adam's face and it was enough to stop the protest at the base of her throat. Michael said he was fine on his own, so Adam left him to pack while he went to grab a bag for Kim that he filled with different things. The ride to his place was quiet and Adam made sure that they were both comfortable in his bed before he left.

"Please don't do anything that would make you lose your badge." She wrapped the blanket around her shoulders.

"I promise I won't." He kissed her swollen lips gently. "You take care of your mom yeah?"

"I will." He kissed Kim and kissed the top Michael's hair before he was out of his place, a police detail at the door and he drove himself back to the 21st to confront Baker. He passed by the night desk sergeant and went straight for the roll-up where they cage was sitting. It was dead quiet for the time of day and there was only one other person in the room with him.

"So, it's just you and me." He crossed his arms over his chest. "You should have stayed away." Baker pushed himself against the bench, back against the wall as Adam took a step forward. He was going to make that man pay for hurting the two people that were becoming his whole world.
