Chapter 3
Big Time Exhortation

School had been rough for Hortense after the wedgie incident. The twelve-year-old genius learned to keep to himself and avoid Kendall and his friends.
Once more, Hortense found himself to be a bit of an outcast, sitting by himself at lunch and playing by himself at recess.

Of course, the twelve-year-old boy hadn't told his mother any of this; when she would ask about how school was, he would shrug and say okay. Thankfully his mother never wanted to discuss the conversation more. Hortense sat at his desk in his bedroom, working on homework. The boy knew his homework would be a breeze, but something about working on it made him happy. Once he got his first few assignments done, the young boy decided to go downstairs and get a snack and see what his mother was up to.

Arriving in the living room, Hortense saw his mother on the couch talking to someone on the landline. She sounded like she had an upset tone in her voice, but the boy decided to walk by and into the kitchen, giving his mother privacy until she was finished. Grabbing the orange juice bottle from the fridge, Hortense poured himself a glass as he waited. Then, he grabbed an apple and enjoyed his small snack at the kitchen table. He found himself happy and enjoying the peaceful moment until his mother walked in, muttering to herself and eyeing him.

"I just got a call from your school - "Mrs. Mitchel began as she came up to the table and sat down across from him.
"- They told me you've been having trouble with some kids in your class? Is this true, Hortense?" Mrs. Mitchel questioned as she raised an eyebrow at her son.

Shuffling his feet a little, the boy frowns as he bites his lip and thinks of what to say. If he lied to his mother, he would feel guilty. But, if he told her the truth, she would talk to the Principal,
making things worse for him. When she doesn't answer, Mrs. Mitchell frowns and eyes the child earnestly. Mrs. Mitchell scolds her son as she sighs and shakes her head. '

"Don't make me ask again, Hortense…."

Hortense nods and bites his lip. I've been having trouble with other kids in my class. I ignore them and keep to myself, so nothing wrong happens. I promise that it's nothing to worry about.

His mother sighs, "This isn't good, Hortense; this move should be a better chance for you to make friends. I'm going to your school tomorrow and talking to your Principal.
If this bullying is stopped, I'll pull you out of school." Mrs. Mitchell determines as he looks sadly at her son.

But the twelve-year-old boy was shaking his head faster than he ever has in his life. "No, mommy, please don't do that. I love school, please no…." The boy pleads as if his mother is taking away his favorite toy in the world. Hortense has always loved school. He loved learning new things and doing the homework that came with it. Hortense always read and studied in his free time, and it was the one chore that allowed him to express himself and be himself. The boy was terrified about losing all the learning opportunities that schools offered.

Seeing the look of fear and worry on her son's face at her suggestion makes Mrs. Mitchell frown. She knew how much her son oddly loved school, and frankly, she didn't want to take it away from him. But, she also didn't want him to be a victim of bullying anymore. She was tired of seeing her precious boy outcast and lonely. Mrs. Mitchell hoped that this move from Texas to Minnesota would help change things for her son. But luck doesn't seem to be on their side; however, Mrs. Mitchell was going to nip this bullying problem in the nip while she could.

Her son deserved better in school and better in life. She just wanted him to be happy.

"All right, here's the deal. I won't pull you from school, but I am talking to your Principal to see how we can fix this problem. I won't stand it, Hortense; you need friends and school, and I want the best for you.
I know I don't show it or say it all the time, but it's true; I love you."

"I love you too, mommy; thank you." Hortense states as he and his mother hug.

After they hug, she smiles at him. "Your welcome, now go on. Why don't you play? I have some things to finish up with work." She finishes as she ruffles her son's hair.

Hortense goes to his room again to finish his homework and work on some things. That night, he gets a bath and then get's into bed by nine o'clock. Sleep soon falls over him, only tosses and turns all night. He tries to sleep until he is woken up for school at six-thirty am the following day. He gets up so early because he and his mother have to get ready before leaving. Today he is not riding on the bus because his mother is driving him to school. She wants to talk to his Principal, so they leave a little earlier to meet before his classes.

Upon arrival to school, Mts. Mitchell parks, and the two climb out of the car and walk into the school together. Hortense holds his mother's hand as they walk into the Principal's office. Once inside, they sign in, and they wait. Soon they are called, and the secretary takes the two to the Principal's office. It's a scary room to Hortense, and there are two chairs in front of the big desk in the room. He's in the left chair, his mother is in the right chair, and the Principal is at the desk listening as his mother explains to the man in charge about Hortense's bullying problems.

It makes the brunette-haired boy nervous, for he has no idea how his Principal will respond. The boy stays quiet the whole time his mother talks; finally, she finishes.

"I see…" Principal Maverick states as he eyes the two before him. "... I'm very sorry to be hearing about this problem. I will get to work on fixing this right away."

Mrs. Mitchell smiles. "Good, that's all I ask."

Principal Maverick nods, "I understand we want our kids to feel safe here at our school. However, I know sometimes not everyone gets along.
But, may I suggest having your boy join some school program to help him make friends? That could help his issues some." Principal Maverick states with a soft smile.

Mrs. Mitchell and Hortense look at one another and shrug. Mrs. Mitchel thinks and says to her, "What do you think? Would you give that a try?" Mrs. Mitchell wonders as she smiles at her son.

Hortense looks between the two as he thinks; he then sighs. "What kind of programs do you offer? Any Science clubs? Or Math clubs?" Hortense questions with a bit of hope.

Shaking his head, the principal sighs. "Sadly no, not enough people are interested in those subjects to have those types of things here." He finishes with a frown.

The twelve-year-old boy frowns as he sighs, he had high hopes, but once more, things were not in his favor; he wasn't too thrilled about it. His mother says, "Well, what do you offer here?"
Mrs. Mitchell demands as she starts feeling annoyed at the situation.

Smiling, the principal hands them a flyer. Principal Maverick says, "We have an excellent hockey program. Right now, hockey is the big sport in our state! Everyone loves it, and your boy happens to be at the age for peewee hockey. It'll help him make friends and learn some self-defense. Plus, hockey is a great way to let out those frustrating feelings. The sport had helped so many of my students." Principal Maverick states with a smile.

Mrs. Mitchel frowns and bites her lip as she watches her son look over the flyer. "Hockey? I don't know… isn't that sport dangerous, especially for kids?
I mean, I had stopped watching hockey a long time ago because sometimes the players got a little violent…."

The principal sighs. "Well, it can be…but we make sure that things are simplified and safe, especially for our peewee team." The principal finishes as he smiles. "Tryouts are being held all week for our sports. Maybe you can take Hortense to one today after school and watch, see what you think. Then let him try it. Worse comes to worst, and he doesn't like it, then we can look into other options for him. But let's start with this."

"Very well…." Mrs. Mitchell sighs; the thought of her boy playing a roughhousing sport made her worried, but if this was a chance for him to make friends, what was the harm of looking into it, right?
"Hortense, I'll take you to tryouts tonight after school; I am getting off on time. It doesn't hurt to look into it. What do you think?"

Looking at her son, she smiles softly when the boy before looks up at her nods with a smile on his face. Would it be the first sport he would join? Not necessarily…But if it were the only real thing this school had as an extracurricular, then he would do it. After all, what was the harm in trying? After the two agreed, the Principal smiled and walked them out of the office. Hortense went to school while his mother left and went to work.

So, the twelve-year-old genius made it through school, anxiously waiting for it to be over. Hockey seemed exciting, and now that he had a chance to check it out and play it, he was getting more excited by the thought of it. Hortense just hoped that Kendall and his friends weren't playing the sport; the boy would hate having his tormentors on his team. Sure, he remembered Kendall asking if he liked hockey, but what would be the odds? Hortense hoped to make friends from this; that is all the boy wanted. Once the bell rang for the last class of the day, he quickly gathered his things and ran out of the school. Getting into his mother's car, she drove him to the hockey rink behind the school building. Hortense had no idea how much his life was about to change joining this sport and that his future was about to begin…
